Uverse - Airport Extreme and MacBook Pro assigned same IP address

Ok, so I have a Uverse RG -> Airport Extreme -> bunch of computers. For some reason, everytime my MacBook Pro sleeps and then I wake it up, it says it can't connect to the internet because there is another device with the same IP address. None of my other Macs (iMac, Powerbook, iPad, iPhones) ever exhibit this behavior. I'm not sure what's going on here. It's almost like the AE takes on the IP address of the MacBook Pro every time it sleeps (or maybe its the other way around). If I go to advanced settings on my MBP and try and renew the DHCP lease, it won't renew and continues to give me the same error message. If I log on to the AE and renew the DHCP lease, it comes back just perfect. This has to be an issue with my RG since it's assigning the IP addresses right? I tried manually setting the IP address of my AE. That seemed to fix it for awhile, but then the MBP again started reporting the same IP address as another device on the network. I didn't discover which device it was, but I did determine it was not the AE since it was configured with a manual IP address. This is getting pretty frustrating as I have to log on to the AE and reset the DHCP lease every time I leave and come back to my MBP. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

I had the same problem with an Airport-enabled iMac.
Here's what I did that fixed the problem:
Log into the Uverse Admin Tool through your browser.
Click on the Settings tab.
Click on the LAN link in the grey bar
Click the circle in front of "Configure Manually"
Set the "Router Address" to 192.168.1.254
Set "Subnet Mask" to 255.255.255.0
Set "First DHCP Address" to 192.168.1.100
Set "Last DHCP Address" to 192.168.1.199
Click the "Save" button. (You'll probably have to enter your password.)
Now open the Airport Utility.
Choose your Airport Express on the left and click the "Manual Setup" button.
Click the "Internet" icon in the top bar.
Click on "TCP/IP"
Select "Manually"
Set "IP Address" to 192.168.1.42
Set "Subnet Mask" to 255.255.255.0
Set "Router Address" to "192.168.1.254"
Set "DNS Server" to "192.168.1.254"
Click the "Update" button.
This sets your Uverse router, which is handing out the IPs, to only give IPs out that number between 100 and 199. It reserves the rest for you to enter manually. So your laptop, your iPhone, etc, will get the DHCP addresses between 100 and 199 but your Airport Express will *always* have 42.
You may have to reboot everything to make sure each device gets the new IPs.
Also, there is no significance to the 42 number. It can be anything between 1 and 99.

  • Can't Connect MacBook and MacBook Pro at same time to AEBS

I can't connect a MacBook and MacBook Pro to an Airport Extreme Base Station at the same time. Whichever one connects first works and the other one doesn't. It was working fine for months and then stopped working. Can only use one computer at at time. There's nothing else on the network. It may have been a software update that caused the problem, but I'm not sure which one. Have done all software updates and am not using any security on the network, so that's not the problem. Many sleepless nights trying to get this fixed, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Do me a favor. So many users are experiencing this (no myself though) and I have suggested so many things with nothing constantly working. There are successes here and there, but nothing consistently solves the problem. However, try the following in Airport Utility and both Macs, and then let us know what happens.
*Can’t Access Certain Web Sites / DNS Server Settings Issues*
I'm wondering if either or both Airport Utility & Network Prefs have proper DNS server settings. Try this
    Launch Airport Utility.
    Select TC on left.
    Click "Manual Setup".
Select "Internet" from the toolbar above.
    What's listed for "DNS Server(s):"?
Try putting in these servers from OpenDNS
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click "Update".
Your TC will restart with the new settings.
Next, launch System Prefs --> Network Prefs.
Select the service you usually connect with on the left (Airport or Ethernet).
    Then click, "Advance..."
    Click the "DNS" tab.
    What's listed for "DNS Server(s):"?
Usually "10.0.1.1" will be listed first in gray. This refers back to the settings in the Airport Utility.
Nevertheless, it doesn't hurt to add the DNS servers noted above here as well.
    Click "OK" then click "Apply".
    Finally, reboot your Mac.
Now see if you have internet access all around.
Let us know if this resolves your issue.
    Cheers!

  • IMac and Macbook pro have same Picture content both are being uploaded to iCloud

    Hi
My iMac and Macbook pro have the same Pictures now that i got the new Photo app all the information is being uploaded to iCloud and i am getting duplicate pictures
is there anyway to merge the pictures and only upload one of them?

HI, then try this and before you do this hold down the command keyboard button and then click the pictures that are duplicated and delete them. then try this -
Photos application for Mac Instructions that might help!
On your iPad,iPhone keep the iCloud on in settings for Photos.
if you have not opened the New Photos application yet to have it transfer your photos from iPhoto let it Transfer the Pictures.
once you have all the pictures from iPhoto to Photos then in Photos go to Preferences
there is general and iCloud tab and go to the iCloud and only uncheck the iCloud button that will make it so it doesn't sync with your iPhone and iPad for Photos.
Then in Photos go up to View and press show sidebar because with that view you can move your pictures easier to albums snd delete or move any pictures or make new albums
when you are all done with moving around your pictures or whatever go back to Preferences and turn on iCloud and make sure you have the optimize Mac Storage and then you are done! I hope this makes sense and works for you! here are the 2 pictures I'm talking about in settings

I just wanted to add what Apple Support walked me through. Worked perfectly. Similar to some of the posts here. This assumes you have finished the setup of the Airport using DHCP to obtain the IP automatically from Comcast and it says the IP is invalid.
    Power off\on Sequence
1, Power off Comcast Modem. Remove Battery back up, if it has one. Disconnect the coax cable.
    2. Power off Airport Extreme
    3. Let both sit for 3 minutes.
    4. Reconnect coax cable to Comcast modem and replace battery and power up.
    5. Wait a minute or two to make sure the Comcast modem is completely up and then Power on the Airport Extreme.
(When AP asks for DNS, Type in both addresses below)

Freyfisher: I had the same problem whenn I switched to the Airport Extreme yesterday.  Here is what I did:
1:  uplugged modem for 30 sec. and detached all ethernet cables.  Plugged back in and reattached airport extreme cable after all lights were solid on the modem. Then, I went into Airport Utility and selected, "Base Station"> "restore default settings".  Then" Base Station"> Restart.  Then go through setup assistant again.  If no luck, try setting IPv4 to 10.0.1.2, subnet to 255.255.255.0, router to 10.0.1.1. IPv6 set to OFF if having trouble.  DNS adresses: 75.75.75.75, 75.75.76.76, search domain hsd1.ST.comcast.net where "ST" is your two-letter State abbrev.  Hope this helps someone....

  • Airport Wireless and MacBook Pro Security with Verizon DSL

My Airport wireless network connects my MacBook Pro mid-2009 model and iPhone 4S via TimeCapsule (1st gen) to a Verizon DSL D-Link DSL-2750B modem/router. Lately, I've been having problems with slow speeds (since the spring it's gone from a very nice 3.8 to 2.7 to an almost halved 2.1 mpbs download speed). I tinkered around with the modem settings from the webpage control panel and reset to the factory settings to no avail as far as increasing my speed but I did get all my connections back and running again.
However, my question is this: the Macbook's wi-fi drop down menu shows the name of  my own user created wi-fi network name, along with some others throughout the neighborhood, along with my networks SSID number that everything all links up to. My Macbook connects in bridge mode via Ethernet and wi-fi with WPA2 security and is "Automatic" for the location. Is this safe to have the SSID ID listed there in plain view to the neighborhood and if not what should I do? Thank you.

I seem to be having the same basic problem-except the wireless connection works fine when I am in the basement (where the Airport Extreme is located) but when I go up flight of stairs, i get "invalid password". Of course, the password is the correct one for the wireless.
THoughts on whether it might help if I by boosters for the wireless for each floor of my house?
Oh, one other thing, my macbook pros never did this before today, my macpro desktop is on an upper floor and it connects wirelessly easily, as does my iMac on an upper floor. I've had the macbook pros working just fine for at least a year each and I didn't change any settings on any of the computers.
    Thanks

  • Can't connect Canon MP560 wirelessly using Airport Extreme with MacBook Pro

My Canon MP560 is failing to connect to the access point.  It recognizes the access point/network I would like to connect to but when I enter in my password it fails to connect and tells me to check access point settings.  I used this exact same printer but different router in my old house and everything worked well!  I'm thinking this is a Mac thing that I can't seem to figure out.  I have the lastest Canon driver updates for Mac and use 10.6.8 software on my Macbook Pro.
This is how the printer instructs me on the panel.
    a. Select Wireless LAN setup
    b. Select Easy Settings
    c. Select Access Point
    d. Enter Password
    e. Fails to connect..........
    Please help.

    Hi Tesserax,
i have the same issue as mountie30 with the MP560 but it's not working
    i have a airport express.
    i was following your instructions:
''To get to this feature within the AirPort Utility, go to the utility's menu bar and first choose Base Station, and then, Add Wireless Clients...''
the problem is, base station is in light gray and i can't click on it.
i re-plugged my printer into my imac so it detects it again. (it still says printer offline in settings)
i have no clue what to do.
    please help

  • Airport Express and MacBook Pro

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro is about 2 years old or so. It has only been today when my MacBook stopped receiving wireless (my airport express is right under my laptop, under the desk). The airport signal bar in the upper right corner reads strong. However, when i open Safari 3.2.1, it refuses to load any page. I know my Airport Express works as I am using it on my iPhone.
Is there a solution to help my macbook pro recognize the Airport signal again? I've tried restarting / resetting my Airport Express and cycling my cable modem. None seem to be the solution.
I open to my Airport Admin Utility and there seems to be negative noise and signal for my laptop... is there a reason for this? Here's a screenie of it.. the top is my laptop while the second one is my iphone: http://twitpic.com/wyz2/full
    thanks in advance!

    Hi,
I'm having exactly the same problem. My iPhone is perfect but my Macbook receives the wifi conection intermitantly. It usally works for a few minutes then drops out completely. I used iStumbler to confirm the Express signal is constant. Also, to check that other WiFi connections in the area weren't interferring by changing the channel. But it has to be the Macbook which incidentally works absolutely fine on every other Wifi connection I've connected to.
Some little setting on the Express perhaps? Did you have any joy?

  • Airport Extreme with macbook pro

I have an imac which is setup with an airport extreme router also a back up drive is attached so that the imac backs up to it using time machine. I now have an Macbook pro which is running on my network wireless. I want to set up time machine to backup on the same drive as the imac attached to airport extreme. I can't seem to get it to work can anyone help?   Can't figure out configuration

You should be aware that Apple does NOT support Time Machine backups to an AirPort Disk (a HDD attached to the USB port of an AirPort Extreme Base Station). That is because, although folks have been intially successful doing so, we get more here in the forums telling us their backup are corrupted or unreachable. Bottom line? If your data is important, don't use these destination for your TM backups.
Please also check out this excellent article by Pondini on the same topic.

  • Very slow transfer speeds with Airport Extreme and MacBook

I have been using a new Airport Extreme without problem at my home for the past six weeks. The speed and range was excellent with both my MacBook Pro and the MacBook which I purchased a few weeks ago. I came out to Greece with both laptops and a new AP Extreme box for my home network here. After set up I noticed that internet access was lethargic on the MacBook and file transfer between the two computers was extremely slow. The problem seems to be with the new MacBook (although it was working well in London). I've done some speed tests and the internet download speed is only 48 kpbs! I also notice that the range is very poor--in the room next to the router I am down to five bars. If I connect to the AP Extreme with cable I get the full 1Mbps I would normally expect here in Athens (ADSL nominal 2Mbps). The MacBook Pro has no problems with wireless access speeds or range, so I am assuming this has to be a problem with the AP extreme card in the MacBook. Is there anything I have overlooked? Perhaps something to do with setting up the new AP Extreme here in Athens?

By process of elimination I realised that the only cause of the sudden slowness must be software that I had installed recently. The only software I had added was a wifi utility to detect available networks--open or protected. Unlikely as it sounds, quitting the utility (which I had set to load on startup) made a dramatic improvement in performance.

  • Can't get Airport Extreme and Express to join same network

I recently bought an Airport Extreme so I could create a wireless network with my Airport Express. THis way I could browse the internet and stream music to my stereo at the same time. After spending hours trying to get both AP Extreme and Express linked together in a WDS network, I have failed time and time again. I have no problem setting the AP Extreme as the WDS main. My iMac and laptop connect to the AP Extreme just fine. I can set up the AP Express to stream music via iTunes to my stereo without problems. But to get them working together in the same network has got me stumped.
I've set the AP Extreme as WDS main and Express as WDS remote. They are both set to same wireless channel. Where am I going wrong? Is it a 802.11n/802.11g compatibility issue?
    I'd appreciate any insight. Thanks.

    adrian,
I have done this a dozen time today with different base stations like yours.
The only thing I can think of is this:
    1. With the WDS Main, make sure you have the address of the Remote in the box.
    2. With the WDS Remote, make sure you have the address of the Main in the box.
    3. Make sure both base stations have the same network name in the wireless tab.
    Then restart both base stations.
Let us know what you find out.

  • Macbook and Macbook Pro in same location getting different signals

My wife has a Macbook and I have a Macbook Pro. We'll both be in practically the exact same spot (computers literally right next to each other) and her Macbook will pick up and be able to connect to multiple wireless networks and my Macbook Pro won't pick up a single thing.
Any ideas why this is happening?

    Josh,
The metal enclosure of your MacBook Pro doesn't make a friendly environment for an antenna. Your wife's MacBook still has a fair amount of metal near the antenna, but nowhere near as much.
The radio waves for most WiFi connections are only 13 cm long. A rule of thumb for indoor environments is that moving the antenna 1/8 wavelength can drastically change the received signal strength.
    Cheers,
    Andreas

  • Cant upgrade Airport Extreme on Macbook Pro Core Duo to 802.11n

I have an original Macbook Pro Core Duo, purchased not long after Apple's announcement of "Bootcamp", and it has a "Wireless Network Adapter (802.11 a/b/g).
From what I can tell from various documentation around the web, this should be upgradable to 802.11n with Apple's 802.11n Enabling software, however it tells me that the hardware is not compatible.
If anyone can suggest what I am doing wrong, or whether I miss out, that would be good.
Also, assuming it can not be upgraded, will running my local Airport network in "802.11n 5GHz 802.11a compatible mode" affect the speed of my other 802.11n devices on the network?
    Thanks.

So you're basically saying 'Link Speed' shows the current connection? If so, the problem resolved itself. Sorry, my bad. Thanks anyways.
(My Time Capsule hasn't arrived yet. I'm currently using an older version of Airport Express.)
Another thing. When I asked at the local Apple Center for the 802.11n card, they told me, the card itself is not sold separately and even if so, it could not be exchanged, since it's unremovably attached to the logic board. Why do they tell the customers something like that? I mean, if Apple doesn't want the users to make changes like that, fine. Then they should say so. But why make up stories in order to dissuade people from their ideas? Is that common policy?
