V 7.02 still horrible
Well, the description states that this new version corrects several of the issues in 7 and 7.1 hmmmmm. Not true for me at all. Upon first installing the update, the same computer lockup occurs while iTunes checks for gapless playback, usually by song 28. After rebooting and retrying I managed to stop gapless playback. Again, a crash for no apparent reason. Reboot again, now the whole thing freezes. Menus wont open, songs will play if opened outside of iTunes, but you can not stop them or open any menus, or even quit the program. Tried to reinstall, and the same thing all over again. C'mon Apple, could you fix this for real like soon?
It does not even get to the gapless playback thing. Right upon opening nothing responds. Scrollbars/menus look normal, but are unclickable.
okay. let's try an experiment aimed at working out if this is a systemwide thing, or if it is associated with a specific user account on the PC. the experiment is not a cure in itself, but it can give us a heads-up on possible causes/treatments of the issue.
here's the experiment.
head into your user accounts control panel and create a new user account with full administrative rights. (there's help documentation on how to do that at the left of the control panel screen.) while you're in that control panel, switch off "fast user switching" in your logging-on preferences.
now log out of the old account and log into the new account.
does itunes launch properly (without the subsequent freeze) from inside the new account?

Itunes 7.1 is still HORRIBLE
My music gets interrupted now for everything else the computer does (i.e. opening web pages), just like version 7 was doing. Why is Apple putting this crap out, which I MUST Have since the New Ipods REQUIRE Itunes 7. I never had problems before with my previous versions of Itunes. This really *****

Is iOS 4.3.1 still sluggish on iPhone 3Gs?
Can anyone please confirm?
Well I'm still testing, but so far still looks crap to me.
It seems the opening animation is still horrible, but on most apps the second time you open an app (if it is already loaded) its smooth. This tells me when you first hit an app that it's loading is interfering with the animation. (never did this before 4.3)
The ipod app is still glitchy animation wise, and settings still has a second or so pause before appearing.
The camera app openeing speed seems to have improved a little though, but the double tap to reveal background tasks is totally inconsistant. (pause before doing anything, then glitchy crappy animation on screen move up).
Ultimately, I think that this is just a case of apple dumping the 3gs, and 'pushing' people to get a more powerful iphone (4 or even 5 later this year). The update doesn't even mention 3gs stability in the release notes, so Apple either basically have their head in the sand, or as I expect, just don't give a crap.
Will test some more, but this isn't looking good. -
Website design still kinda slow
Hi there,
Basically I have been struggling with my 1st flash webiste, just about bodged it together, but it is loading terribly slowly.
http://www.siobhannolan.co.uk/tester/
Having consulted someone on this site, I reduced the xml loading and optimised all the jpegs, which made a lil difference, but its still horribly slow.
I've had a bit of trouble with the dynamic buttons too, when I added a second line of text they would overlap the btn below, to counter this I added blank xml nodes between the problem buttons, which sort of sorted the issue (although when you click on one of these a second time they load the wrong page), I read somewhere that unnessasary xml code can slow down a webite, plus my freind whos site it is keeps getting the old "some code in the site is causing your computer to run slowly" msg (her internets slower than mine.)
I'm also wondering if the amount of images in the swfs is slowing it down (some of the swfs are coming in at more than 4mb) - was I wrong to ditch the dynamic loading? or is there another way to compress the swfs?
Any help will as ever be graciously recieved, kind regards and fingers crossed D.I don't know what browser you use, but if you have Safari as an option,
I'd advise looking at the activity of your website (Window>Activity).
The preloading, is relatively normal for a flash website and not too long to bore people wishing to visit your site, according to surveys.
However, when you visit the projects section - this is where the problems start.
The way in which you have organised content on your website means huge 4mb, as you states, file sizes for each section. As Ned has already pointed out, 4mb is not good.. In terms of a design perspective, the content is firstly, not necessarily all worthwhile, and secondly, if it is, why not distribute it around the website, with a few subheadings? If you're new to flash this would be relatively easy to do and would save the hassle of resizing all your content (though, it would definitely be worthwhile!)
So to conclude, basically, it's your structure.
You've placed too much content in one place and the best advise I could give, is to distribute it elsewhere, or remove.
I hope you get this fixed!

Horrible export quality in FCP for web
We just exported our video in final cut pro for the web, on the highest settings and are very disappointed.
Is there anyway to get a better quality for youtube?

piff,
You have "_watch in high quality_" link on your YouTube video page. There's a lot of sudden movement and color change in your video which could affect quality upon encode. YouTube is free and you get what you pay for. In all honesty it is not going to get any better than what you presently have uploaded on YouTube. If you want a high(er) quality video on the web encode respectively and host independently.

HD to SD m2v pixillation on stills
I have HD footage and I am using still images Ken Burns effects. It looks great but when I use the compressor to created SD ntsc some of the images have pixillation flickering like mosaic effect.
I have the frame control on in the compressor, which improved the quality by 20%. But its still horrible.
Does anyone know the answer, I have to deliver this 7 minutes video by Aug 15,
Thanks,I found the problem, and its not the compressor. After exporting a reference movie and playing back in the quick time player these 5 still images were heavy interlaced.
I can see double images about 3 inches apart. And that created the pixilation in the final 2mv file. BY reinserting these images and applying Ken Burns motion it solved the problem. I have seen this distortion in the past, on the last frame of the still. It puzzles me what could create this distortion effect.

Laptop display has no contrast settings - horrible display
I just bought the hp envy 15t-j100 quad edition (not touchscreen)- with upgraded NVIDIA graphics & 1920x1080 px.
It's horrible. My old Lenovo with a NIVIDIA has an amazing display.
I'm a photographer and am disapointed to say the least. The display is terrible, even basic reading is difficult because of the terrible display. No contrast and if you turn up the brightness the page is glaring you in the face. How is someone supposed to work like this without going blind?
I've tried to adjust the display color settings using the brightness, contrast & gamma settings but still horrible.
Am I missing something here? Are there settings I am not finding? I've read the manuals...
Any suggestions to improve the display are welcome. Thank youHello magverde,

Premier Elements 7 out of memory solution, but....
I finished making my first video in Prem. Elements 7. It's a 4 min long series of about 25 short clips with a few transitions and effects and cuts. I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 w/ 4 gigs of ram with Vista. I did a complete clean out of old programs, defraged hard drive, cleanup using cccleaner, turned off windows defender and all that junk, turned off screen saver, changed settings in control panel to optimum performance with no visual effects, turned off every available extra program through msconfig at startup, and shut down any non critical stuff in task manager. I still get the "running low on memory" message after a few minutes of playback or light editing and then a program shut down.
I requested help from Adobe and to their credit, they did answer promptly with suggestions about several possibilities including finding a bad or oversized clip or photo and eliminate it and many other things that did not work.
So I reverted to the old physical tape and splice magnetic tape days and split the project into 2 files. I exported each half to an avi dv file and it didn't crash in the process. Then I spliced the two mixdowns back together in a new project to make the one complete project.
I say all that to perhaps help someone in the same situation. So I think I've come up with the work around BUT....I've put two avi dv files (compressed I'm guessing) into a new project and when I export again to make a full length file, will the new file be doubly compressed losing quality from going through the process twice?
I'm using a Sanyo Exacti FH1 which has a default resolution of 1920 x 1080 60field/s - which I need to understand better. mpeg 4 files. I'm guessing if I use a lower resolution, Premier should be happier and not have to work so hard?
Thanks for your time,
ThomThom,
Going back some years, before FW was as widespread, as it is now, I tried the same thing. I used several brands of USB 2.0 externals, mostly in the 200-250GB range. I had two problems:
1.) Delayed Write Failures were rampant - major problem with file corruption. This was commonly reported by many, who were trying to work to/from USB externals.
2.) Speed - those things were horribly slow and this was too frustrating for me. I gave up and just used the externals for archival storage, as they were originally intended.
I began experimenting with FW-400 externals. I go no Delayed Write Failures, but the speed was still horrible. I gave up on these.
The FW-800 (IEEE-1394b) external drives came out. Most were multi-connections w/ USB, FW-400 and FW-800. With a multi-chip card, first PCMICA and then ExpressCard, I found these to be very stable, fast enough to edit to/from, and I still do this. I use a handful of 1.5-2TB FW-800's to edit to/from and shuttle Projects between computers. Note: I have the drive letter for each of these set in the OS on each computer, so that my NLE does not get confused as to where the Assets are located. If I plug in external Z:\, it comes up as Z:\ on each computer.
Now, eSATA drives and plug-in controller cards (probably only ExpressCard, but maybe some PCMICA's) are common, and eSATA externals are available. These would be even faster than FW-800. If I was not so heavily invested in FW-800 drives, I'd go fully with eSATA. [Also, my workstation is out of PCI/PCIe slots, so I'd have to take something out.]
One caveat, if you go with FW, would be to detach all FW devices BEFORE you use FW to Capture from your camera. I never have anything else attached to that controller chip, when doing Capture. Many cameras will not even be recognized, if some other device is also attached. With some others, the Capture module in the NLE will not see the camera, even if the OS does. With still other, Capture will get halted, or many frames dropped. When doing Capture - make certain that there are NO other FW devices on that chip. Note: with on-board FW connections, one might have several connectors, but are likely to have them all fed into one single controller chip.
Hope that this helps,
Hunt -
When I first upgraded to RH7, I noticed that all the em
dashes in the projects I converted from RH2002 to RH7 displayed as
&emdash; in my compiled help.
The updates seem to have fixed that problem when
converting/upgrading projects, but em dash support is still
horribly (and frustratingly broken) for em dashes that I add when
writing new content in RoboHelp 7.
To add an em dash, I hold ALT and press 0151 on my numeric
keypad. It's quick, and it works in every other application I've
ever used. In fact, RoboHelp 7 makes me think it'll work in RH7,
too, because the em dash displays correctly in the Design pane.
However, when I run my compiled help, I see the dreaded
&emdash; instead of my em dash.
Yes, I could go to Insert > HTML > Symbol and then
choose Em Dash, but that's incredibly clunky. I could also do a
universal find/replace to replace &emdash; with <symbol
name="Em Dash"><robohelp>—</robohelp>
before I ship a help file, but that seems silly.
If RoboHelp needs <symbol name="Em
Dash"><robohelp>—</robohelp> why can't it
just add that tag set when I hit ALT+0151?
Frustrated,
-kmcanney
P.S. I know we were all glad to see Kadov tags go away, but
how are these <robohelp> tags any better? Thanks for checking in, Peter.
It's definitely not the font. I used every available font on
my system, and I was still seeing &emdash;.
Interestingly enough, we have another RH installation that
doesn't exhibit the em dash problem (nor the problem I noted in
another post that prevented me from typing a numeric value in the
Font Size combo box).
The combination led me to suspect that my installation might
be corrupt, so I uninstalled RH7 using Control Panel > Programs
and Features. After uninstalling, running the RH installer prompted
me to repair or remove my installation, and I saw that all the
installation files had been left behind. I let RoboHelp do the
uninstallation this time, reinstalled, and then applied the 7.0.1
and 7.0.2 patches. The problem persisted.
I uninstalled again, deleted left-behind files again,
reinstalled and went straight to the 7.0.2 patch. The problem
persisted.
We shared my coworker's program folder across the network,
and I ran Beyond Compare on the two installation folders. Since we
both had 7.0.2, I expected to see most files in sync. Not so. Many
of the files in my C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe RoboHelp 7 folder
were from 9/2007. It seems that the updater hadn't updated many of
my files (including many DLLs in the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe
RoboHelp 7\RoboHTML folder).
Using brute force, I updated my installation with the files
from my coworker's, and all is now shiny and happy.
Seems that something's quirky in the install/update behavior.
We'll have to see what happens if/when a 7.0.3 patch is released.
Thanks,
-Kevin -

Extremely slow performance with Radeon HD 7870
Hi,
I am using a number of Adobe programs on my new Windows 8 64 bit system, with 16 gigs of ram, an Intel Core i5 2.67ghz, and AMD Radeon HD 7870 2 gig. All the programs (including After Effects and Illustrator) work very well with the exception of Photoshop CS6 64 bit, which has extremely slow performance with Use Graphics Processor enabled in my preferences (which Photoshop selects by default). If I turn off Use Graphics Processor, the slow performance vanishes. If I change Drawing Mode to Basic, there might be a slightly detectable improvement over Normal and Advanced, but it's still horribly slow. The refresh rate seems to be just a few frames per second. Everything is slow: brushes, zooming, panning, everything.
I've tried changing the settings I've seen suggested elsewhere: I switched Cache levels to 2, history states to 10, and tile size to 128k. No effect. Photoshop is currently at the default of using 60% of available ram. Efficiency has remained at 100% throughout all my tests. Also, this slow performance has affected me from the moment I installed Photoshop; it didn't crop up after previous good performance. The problem exists regardless of the size or number of documents I have open. Performance is still terrible even when I create a 500 x 500 pixel blank new canvas and try a simple task like drawing with the brush.
Photoshop is fully up to date, and so are my graphics drivers (Catalyst version 13.1). Any help would be greatly appreciated; at the moment performance is so bad in Photoshop that it's unusable with graphics acceleration enabled. Thanks in advance for replying.

I followed your suggestion, Noel, and uninstalled my drivers with the Catalyst Uninstall Utility (which I hadn't used before), rebooted, reinstalled Catalyst 13.2 Beta 7, rebooted, deleted the PS Prefs, started PS, and now the performance is radically improved!
It baffles me why I would need to do a clean driver uninstall in a new system environment that has only ever had this video card, and is only a few months old, but that action seems to be what's improved the situation. Note that because I deleted the PS preferences, the good performance now occurs with the default Use Graphics Processor enabled, and Drawing Mode set to Advanced (with every feature in the Advanced dialog checked except 30bit display).
Having no reference point, I can't tell for sure if performance is as good as it theoretically ought to be for my system specs, but using the standard 13px brush is only slightly laggy behind the cursor, even if I become reckless and squiggle on the canvas violently. It wasn't just sluggish response before: Photoshop seemed to be in pain trying to draw the line segments as it laboured to catch up to the cursor. That is pretty much gone now.
Much more tellingly, zooming and panning the canvas is like it ought to be, responsive and clean, more or less like it was for me in CS4 with my old Nvidia 9600GT. The poor performance with zooming and panning was the most worrying aspect of the issue. It's a great relief to see these working more properly now.
I have to confess I'm a little embarrassed to have drug you through all this hassle only to discover that something as rudimentary as properly cleaning out the drivers would be the apparent solution. I never would have imagined that doing that, with such a new and stable system, would make any difference, since I don't have a legacy of older drivers dotting my hard drive. In any event, I'm really grateful that you guys took the time to try to help me.
In the interest of completeness, here's the relevant portion of my system info after doing the reinstall steps I mentioned above:

As you can see, the Microsoft Basic Render Driver still appears as a Video Card in the list. This presumably has something to do with Windows 8, and I really don't know if its presence here is still a sign that my card is not being used to its optimal capability. I have a hunch that the slight lag that I am still experiencing with the brush when Use Graphics Processor is on -- totally absent with the acceleration turned off -- implies that Photoshop is still unable to take maximum advantage of my card. I would assume that the brush tool should be more responsive with acceleration on than off, in a rig without any issues, but that's just assumption on my part. If you turn off Use Graphics Processor on your systems, is the brush tool more or less responsive?
But again, panning the canvas with the hand tool is now extremely responsive, without any screen tearing or visible lag, and that's a massive improvement over the total meltdown of performance I was suffering from before.
Thanks again very much for your help. I'm grateful to all of you who took the time to chime in. -
IOS 4.3.1 battery drain on iPhone
I have been wrestling with trying to find out what is causing my faster than normal battery drain issues since upgrading to 4.3.1 on iPhone. I thought I had it nailed when I discovered Skype was running in background. I have since deleted the Skype app but am still getting faster than normal battery drain. I then began to look at the internal processes running and am now wondering if any of those are the culprit.
How do you know what the process is used for and if it is needed? And then how to kill it?
Thanks and I look forward to your reply.
...BruceWell I'm still testing, but so far still looks crap to me.
Intermittent screen flash in dual monitor mode?
I've developed an interesting problem - A few months back there existed some fault with kde's treatment of the xf86-video-ati drivers which meant that, if you had compositing enabled, it would randomly segfault and die. This was slightly irritating.
So, recently, In an act of pure, stupid, and uninformed optimism, I decided to see what would happen if I just asked pacman to upgrade me to the latest version of kde (In case the problem from before has been fixed - for comedic effect).
This went predictably badly, although the fault in question does appear to have been fixed. However, as part of it's dependencies the new kde brought in new ATI drivers, and somewhere along the way an entirely new and exciting fault that causes my secondary monitor's image to flash to black for about 1 second in 7 has been picked up.
From my own investigating/googling so far, I've determined this is something to do with KMS and my display drivers. The flashing persists even in text mode, but only affects the secondary screen (The other one works fine). If I add nomodeset to my grub kernel boot line then the flashing ceases in text mode, but Xorg segfaults when I try and start it.
Has anyone else encountered this particular fault? Any advice on how to fix it?
Thanks! Thanks for working that out, but I'm still horribly confused. I've been tinkering with things today to improve my boot speed (new kernel, messing with module loading and so on), and the problem seems to have gone away by itself. I have at no stage had anything to do with upower (it hasn't been installed).
How perplexing.
Anyway, problem solved, thanks everyone, and well done Sayo for working out the problem! (Even if it appears that MY problem was unrelated ) -
Apple need to have a support forum in Chinese language
many Chinese Apple users has problems unsolvable in any Chinese apple enthuaist forums and they don't speak English so they cannot get help from the rest of the world.
Apple's service in China is still horrible especially in smaller cities. most Mac owners in China are professional DTP users and graphics designers which reflected to an overall PC market share of less than 0.1%, much less than 6% in America. Chinese people don't buy Mac because Macs (besides Mac Pro) cost one time more than comparable custom-build PCs, zero companies in China make commercial Chinese Mac software, and Microsoft's silence about the massive pirating of MS software in China.

Unacceptable Errors after 10.5.2
This needs to be fixed:
1. Audio skipping horribly- rendering my entire music library unlistenable.
2. Video's in Quicktime/VLC skipping horribly
3. Iphoto Slideshows skip and pause horribly
4. Computer won't wake from sleep
I have observed Activity Monitor and nothing is hogging my CPU. I have no processes running except itunes and its still horrible. Someone please help, I hate my computer now (this is the third macbook pro I've owned). That sounds like hard drive I/O problems. Have you tried doing the usual repair permissions on your HD post upgrade? Excessive problematic read / writes would cause what you are describing without hogging CPU.
