V1u 30p in FCE HD?

I recently acquired a Sony V1u and have been shooting in 30p. I can edit my footage on a 1080i timeline just fine but the Quicktime Movie output is extremely judderly and WAY out of sync with voice. Never had this problem with the Canon HV30. Is this a compatibility issue with the V1u and 30p? Any way to fix. Thanks for any advice.

I'm editing on a Macbook Pro 2.2 w/4GRam OSX 10.5.4, importing directly to a Lacie 7200rpm drive, I used my HV30 deck to capture HD to FCE4. Video was shot on V1u at 30p. Easy set-up set to Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i. QTPro Ver. 7.5.
Everytime I try to drop the movie in the sequence, I get a pop-up telling me my sequence settings are wrong and I click on OK for matching sequence settings to capture. Not sure why this is as I only really have 1 HD choice and when I look at Seq. settings it still shows AIC1080i.
I just re-captured using the V1u as a deck re-edited and suddenly everything seems to work fine, output looks good, so it appears this has something to do with using the Canon HV30 as a deck???

  • HVR-V1U / 30P / Non Drop Frame / 4:3 / DVCAM / Proper Settings

My client's camera and setup from the shoot is listed in the subject. On import into CS3 (Mac) there is no DVCAM setting. But, I realize that DV and DVCAM are virtually the same.
I've tried a few different import settings and they all seem to leave the video looking a bit 'jaggey.' I've tried import settings of both interlaced and progressive and none of them seem to be really sharp on import.
If someone could make a suggestion or send a preset that has worked for them in a similar situation, I would really appreciate it. I want to make sure the footage is captured correctly. Output will be DV NTSC, Lower Field First, std. for broadcast.
Thank you in advance for your help.

I know this doesn't help much now, but given the output restrictions, your client should have shot at 30i, not 30p.

  • 1080 30p displaying jagged

through log and transfer i brought in ProRes 1080 30p clips. put it on the timeline (all settings match) but when i go to watch the footage on my older Dell LCD monitors as well as my broadcast SD monitor and my HDTV (which is 720P)...I see a ton of jagged lines on any pan.  i am curious if this is just a typical thing.  shouldn't at least the viewer/canvas see it just fine without the jaggies? the other monitors are going through the Mx02 mini.

How was the original 30P recorded? On my Sony V1U, 30P is recorded as 60i with the frames temporaly identical. If I import it as 30P (ProRes, HDV 30p, etc), what I get is every other frame, and I lose 1/2 the resolution. Lots of jaggies. So I import as 60i and all is fine with the world. FCP, Quicktime, (when I downrez to SD for DVD),and Compressor etc. all do the right thing and make it progressive.
Note also that I don't use Compressor to go from 1080i60 (p30) to SD (ProRes 720x480 anamorphic); It seems to take FOREVER. I use Quicktime to do the conversion, and it works perfectly and much faster on my G5 Quad.

  • Log and Transfer window doesn't recognize Samsung SC-HMX20

The camera does appear on the desktop however, so I can navigate to the video folder on the camera and upload the video files to my computer, which I can then edit in FCE.
    Is this the correct workaround?
Also, anyone working with this camera (I shoot at 1080/30p) and FCE?
Would appreciate any comments on your particular workflow in FCE - from getting your footage off the camera, to what settings you use in FCE.
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for replying, but I don't think that this is the issue (the files play back fine on the camera - also I can manually move them from the camera storage into fce - it's the Log and Transfer function that won't recognize my camera).
As a side note, when I use the Log and Transfer function, I get an error message that reads: Warning - "Video" (+the folder on the camera that has my video files+) contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media"
I suppose if someone could explain that error message in plain english then I might get somewhere ...

  • Using 1920x1080 30p and 1280x720 60p in FCE

I have FCE for my Mac. I'm working with a videographer who is shooting with a Sony PMW-EX1. He says he can deliver footage to me on DVDs as .MOV files that are 1920x1080 30p (for regular footage) and 1280x720 60p (for slow-mo). He says if I can't work with that, he can deliver the footage as 1440x1080i (and p).
From what I've read in other forums, it seems I could import the higher-res footage, but then I would have to render it in FCE which would convert it to 1440x1080i.
First, is my understand about my ability to import the high-res footage correct?
Second, assuming I can import it, given the fact that I'd have to convert the high-res footage, is it better to get the footage shot in 1440x1080i so nothing has to be "lost" in the conversion process? (Personally, I'd like to have the higher-res footage so that if I upgrade to FCP or another program down the road, I'll have the better footage).
    Thanks.

Your videographer is wrong. He should not be shooting two different formats for slomo. If he wants to use 60p for slomo he should shoot everything 1280x720. That's first, but doesn't really effect you.
All your assumptions are incorrect. The frame size in only one aspect of the issue. The format he delivers the material will most likely be in a codec that is not supported in FCE. XDCAM is not supported in FCE, nor is native HDV, nor ProRes, only the Apple Intermediate Codec.
60p for slomo in FCE does not work. It makes no difference to FCE.
You should mention what version of FCE you're using.

  • Using Canon HV30 in 30p mode - settings for FCE?

I'm a little confused about the best settings in FCE for capturing video shot in 30p mode on a Canon HV30. I know (from the manual) that the HV30 records the 30p video at 1080i specifications.
Should the Easy Setup be set for AIC 1080i60, or AIC 720p30 (I don't see an option for 1080p30)? I want my end result to be progressive, not interlaced. The movies will be burned on DVDs, for display on computers, regular TVs, and HD TVs.
Likewise, when I create a sequence, should I select AIC 1440x1080i60, or AIC 720p30?
FCE seems to gladly let me use any combination of these. If the answer is “it depends”, then what does it depend on?
    Thanks.

I am just learning a lot of this stuff, but here's my 2 cents...
Yeah, I've been using FCE for a couple of months with my Elura 65 SD camcorder. I just got my HV30 last week, so I'm trying to wrap my brain around all the HD options.
I just bought the HV30 a few weeks ago. I set my Easy Setup to 1080i60 and it captures fine (remember, though, your capture screen will be different than regular DV capture. It will have no controls, just the screen and you press esc when you're done.)
I've noted that FCE often doesn't recognize ESC when I hit it. When that happens, I manually stop the camcorder, and the FCE thinks it's reached the end-of-tape, which has the same effect.
Once you import it, it will show as 1440x1080, even though you may have read stuff in the manual about 1920x1080. 1440 is what it captures at b/c that's how it is able to store it on miniDV tapes. This is a miniDV thing, not a FCE thing. (I spent a few days on that one!)
When working with it in FCE, you will see the sequence and captured video settings as 1440x1080 (I believe the sequence will be created from settings specified in the Easy Setup, so it'll be 1440x1080.) When you export it, however, you will see the info on the exported file as 1920x1080.
I do not think you are going to have a choice in shooting at 720p with the HV30, or at least I have personally not found a way to do that.
I was looking at the 720p option just because it was the only one that indicated Progressive.
I believe I've heard that one can use the 720p import option to reduce the capture file size, at the expense of some resolution (but it's still HD). Anyone have any comments on that?
In terms of all the destinations you're seeking for this video, saddle up, because you're in for quite a ride figuring out this HD stuff. It is not trivial. I am so frustrated at the moment with much of it that I'm likely to shoot in regular DV mode for a while until this stuff settles down into some easier (read: more commonly adopted) ways to work with HD video.
My final destination is a DVD via iDVD. It seems that just exporting as a QuickTime movie (not Using QuickTime Conversion...), selecting Audio and Video, and Include Chapter Markers (if I'm using them), produces a .mov file that drops right into iDVD. I also choose Make Movie Self-Contained, which results in large files, but I want to archive them and don't want them location-dependent.
My advise is to start playing around with it (using short clips!) and testing some stuff out, then posting specific questions to what you're trying to accomplish. These forums are amazing. And I just ordered Tom Wolsky's book on FCE 4 as he is a machine on these forums and I've read great things about the book.
    That's what I've been doing.
And I'm also a Wolsky fanboy - I purchased his +Final Cut Express 4 Editing Workshop+ shortly after I started learning FCE, and that book has been very helpful. My main issue right now is coordinating the settings in my HV30 with the FCE settings.
Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

  • Got Tom Wolsky's FCE book and I have a question

Tom - Thanks for your really nice FCE 4 book!
I just got a Canon HF100, and I'm about to shoot a LOT of video (about 100 hours worth). I want to get the settings right before I record all that stuff.
With FCE 4.0.1, is there any problems or cons if I shoot my footage in 30F instead of 60i ?
I know that Canon's 30F is a simulated 30 progressive, and it actually records in 60i.
My intention in using the 30F, is that I'm filming martial arts moves, and I want to to grab progressive frames from the video and put those frames into documents / books to illustrate the moves on paper. I don't want the pictures to come out jagged interlaced looking when I'm moving in the picture. I hope I'm explaining myself well here.
I don't want shoot everything with Canon's 30F mode, and then run into issues / problems with FCE because Canon's weird simulated 30p mode somehow screws things up and I should have shot in 60i instead.
Also, I like vivid colors in my video. I think it looks like a better picture. Should I shoot my video using Canon's Vivid color filter mode? Maybe I should just shoot in normal color mode and add the vivid color effects in post with FCE?
Please help, I need some expert advice here.
p.s. I'm shooting everything in 1920x1080. That's one thing that's kinda out of date in Tom's book. He said FCE 4 doesn't really do 1920x1080. But now with 4.0.1, I think it truly does support full HD. It's probably because he wrote the book before that feature was added. Thank God it was added... what a relief.

Just a couple of points before Tom responds:-
    1. Do a short test (possibly only taking minutes) using the different settings, 30PF and normal interlaced before you even dream of shooting anything serious. Burn the results to a DVD-RW (so you don't waste a load of DVDs on testing). This way you will see which method suits you best - things don't always turn out the way you might imagine.
    2. You can get excellent quality from an interlaced HDV frame if you deinterlace it (if necessary) before printing. You don't need to shoot progressive.
Anyway, do some quick tests and find out which looks better.

  • Unable to print to video, out to Sony V1U

Wedding video shot with Sony V1U, HDV 1080i 16x9. Imported into FCEHD3.5, using easy set up hdv 1080 AIC. total movie length 100minutes. Edited fine. Exported as a QT movie self contained to desk top, no problem. Then attempted to export from the time line the entire sequence. The FCE is pretty easy to export from and set the sony v1u to HDV import with both auto and HDV settings. It is in VTR mode. I checked the render again and it was complete. saved the project. Closed FCEHD. connected fire wire from cam to computer and powered up cam with what appear to be the correct setting according to the manual. Opened FCEHD and project. Rechecked render, resaved project and chose print to video. Went through the next screen as I normally do and have tried with both automatic record start and manual record start. Clicked start and the computer does its job and the video starts but the camera does not appear to ever be controlled by the computer. I let it run for about 30 minutes to see if it needed time to change from Mpeg2 back to HDV. Maybe I did not wait long enough for the number crunching before I gave up.
Question 1: What am I doing wrong.
I tried to export a SD movie and it worked fine.
I tried to send it to IDVD from the QTmovie.fcp file on the desk top but it immediately shuts down IDVD. I tried to import into ImovieHD and it gave me a QT error. I thought maybe imovie had a time limit so I re-exported the movie in to sections as FCP and then dragged and dropped into imovie and it worked. The resolution is much worse in imovie as compared to the great video in FCEHD.
Question 2: Am I losing quality as I move from HDV to FCEHD ( I would assume so as it is going to Mpeg2), and even more when I go then from FCEHD to imovie.
Question 3: When I print to tape from fce back to my original hdv setting it should convert back to hdv correct?
    Any advide would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Steve

  • Transferring footage from Sony V1U to Final Pro Cut Express...HELP!!

    Hi Guys,
I have been trying to transfer my footage from my V1U to my IMAC for days and am getting no where. At first I thought it was because Imovie didn't work with my V1U. So I went out and bought Final Pro Cut express today. I still CAN'T transfer my footage.
BTW, I am using a firewire 800 and my MAC is only a week old.
Does anyone have any advice on how to do this? I am about to pull my hair out.
    Thanks!

    Hi(Bonjour)!
HDV is not captured like DV.
It's a must to use the correct setup in easy setup dialog to fit your shooted material on tape.
Here's the trail to follow if you want to edit in HD (by the way I use a SONY FX1 that can shoot in HD mode or standard definition DV- mode: wide or standard screen).
    On my FX1
-find the camera menu and set the recording format to HDV (it sould be 1080i60 as it's the HDV format used by this model).
-Set the output format to automatic or 1080i60 (this is the type of signal that will be outputed by your camcorder upon capture via firewire).
-turn off you camcorder and mac.
-Plug both devices with a firewire cable.
-turn on the FX1 AND the mac.
    -Start FCE HD
    In Final Cut Express HD
-Use "Easy Setup..." command in Final Cut express menu , select HD in format tab, 29.97 in rate tab and HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60. Click "Setup" button.
-From this point, any new sequences and capture session will occur in Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 (the format used to edit in HDV).
-Use command-8 to open the capture window. HDV is captured via a simple dialog. There are no capture settings or log clips info.
-Start your camcorder in *VCR mode*(the play button on camcorder or on remote) and click the capture now button into FCE HD.
NOTES: there is no sound from your MAC upon capturing. There is a lag time between what is played on your cam and what you can see on your mac screen, so use the camcorder screen to monitor the content.
-Hit the "ESC" key when you want to stop the capturing process.
Once the esc key is pressed, your mac will continue to process the captured material and the capture window should close.
That's the way to capture HDV material into FCE HD.

  • Log and transfer footage from Panasonic GH1 into FCE

I have already read the few threads discussing importing AVCHD video from the Panasonic GH1 camera into FCE. I was expecting that the 1080x24 (wrapped in 60i) would import OK but the 720x60p would not. However, so far, I have had both formats import using the log and transfer just fine. These have been only short clips roughly a minute or less in length but no sign of FCE crashing when importing the 60p footage.
So, is this considered normal or has something in the most recent OSX updates fixed this FCE capability?

The program is usually able to ingest 24p and 60p footage fine, but upon exporting it will be conformed to the frame rate of your sequence. Since FCE doesn't support custom sequences all exported movies are either in 29.97fps or 25fps. Problems also sometimes arise where the program interprets your footage as 29.97fps instead of what it actually is, causing the audio to drift a bit as well.
Better to stick to what the program supports: 50i/25p and 60i/30p. If you need the functionality of 24p or 60p you should upgrade to Final Cut Pro.

  • Convert 1080 30p HDV to SD DVD - Help!!

This may have been solved already on here but I couldn't find it so here I go. I have footage shot with the new Sony HVR-S270u HDV camera in 1080 30P mode. I'm trying to figure out what would be the best workflow. I need to be able to give the client SD DVDs now and then later be able to produce blu-ray discs when available. My thought was to edit everything now in HD and then down convert the edited project in compressor with the SD DVD presets. I've tested that method and it works, ok? Have some flicker at times in the motion scenes. Is this the best way or close with some tweeking?
Could I edit it in DVCAM mode to produce the SD DVDs and then when I'm ready for the Blu-ray recapture from the tapes to HD?
Any help and guidance would be much appreciated.
    Mike

I'm shooting mostly school plays and concerts. The lighting is not ideal and usually fairly dim compared to what video or film actually wants. I've found that with the Sony V1U, which is not a great low light camera, shooting in 30p allows the shutter to be as slow as 1/30 of a second, so the camera doesn't need as much auto gain to give me the brightness I want. So there is less noise that way. I capture that in ProRes 422 30p (you have to set it up manually, there is no easy preset for it). When things move rapidly, I get blur rather than interlace "lines". I like it better. Many shoot in 24p for similar reasons: motion blur and film look. I'm never going to film, so 30p is better for me.
The only issue I've ever found is when the light is pretty bright (outside on sunny day), the shutter speed gets faster, like 1/250th of a second or more. Then motion is not so blurred, and you get "judder:" the picture jumps from one image to the next more obviously. If you freeze frame on each one, it is a pretty good snap shot every 1/30th of a second. WIth 60i, you get 1/2 the frame every 1/60th of a second which is the proceeded the other 1/2 1/60th of a second later. Most TV sets show that pretty smoothly, but you can still get interlace lines. It all depends on YOUR preferences and those of your audience.
I find that they both down-rez to SD using compressor quite well and using either HDV or ProRes can produce equally good results. With HDV, you don't get 30p on capture, but 60i with each frame being 1/2 of the 30p frame. I find that the ProRes 30p compresses marginally better on fast action.
My suggestion: get a camera and a tape and shoot bunch of stuff at 1080i60 (outdoors, indoors, high contrast, stripes (H and V and diagonal), low light, lots of light, using ND filters (built into my V1U); then shoot the same or similar stuff in 30p.
Capture all that stuff in HDV native, ProRes 60i and 30p (for the stuff shot in 30p). Put it into FCP timelines and then compress to SD using compressor. Use DVD SP to create a DVD with all of the various tests on it (properly labeled with titles and menus) so you know what's what. Then view that DVD on a variety of TV set and computer monitors (if computers are part of you delivery). You'll know pretty quickly what works for you.

  • Capturing AVCHD video from a Canon VIXIA HG21 camcorder to FCE 4.01

Video captured at the highest resolution MXP i60 seems to stutter after importing to FCE 4.01. I know that playback on a computer monitor will show these signs but after burning with iDVD and played on a TV set, it still is jerky when panning a moving image.
I've read most of the posts concerning this. I have read that FCE will only accept 29.97 frame rates in several posts and other posts show "i60 presets support both 60i and 29.97 frame rates".
I read where I should reset my FCE preferences but I don't seem to have any. I looked in Library Preferences and could not find a "com.apple.finalcutexpress.plist" or the "final Cut Express User Data" folder.
Sure could use some help from those who use that camcorder and FCE.

I also shoot and edit with the HG21 but haven't experienced any such problems. Do your sequence settings match your clip settings in every regard? You definitely shot in 60i and not 30p? Did you fully render your sequence before exporting?
I've found there's a lot of interlacing when panning quickly, but it hasn't been jerky for me. Does it appear this way on the camera too? It may have been that you did not pan smoothly enough (such as with a good tripod).

  • 30p to dvd ntsc

    Hi everyone,
can 30p project in fcp output to an ntsc dvd & play on tv Ok? or it would be tearing down by the interlacing of ntsc as 60i?
reason I ask is that the new sony V1u can record 30p & if that 30p project can mix with SD30f uncompress project then I would want to shoot in 30p instead of 24p.
**have to mix with some Dbeta footage* when mastering so what is the best way?
shoot 24pA & digitize into fcp as 60i (that the sony automatically did that).
    or
shoot 30p? ( don't know the edit process yet)
    thank you,
    JP

Shoot 30p. Capture as 29.97 NTSC DV... you're done. no interlacing should be introduced.
There's a lot of confusion about frame rates, because we're using new terms for recording formats. Like 24p is a recording format that is really NTSC video - 29.97 fps with a pulldown pattern of fields in a DV camera... 30p has no pulldown pattern. it's really 29.97 too. make sense?
There are cameras that record 60 fps, and flag the frames you choose, like the varicam. And I thought digital video would be easier than analog. LOL...

  • Resolution recommendations for HDV, FCE and iDVD

The Canon HV30 camcorder outputs HDV in 1080/60i, 1080/24p, 1080/30F, 1080/24F, 1080/30p. Which of these would yield the best results from a workflow and image quality point of view through FCE and iDVD for creating a DVD to be used on an HDTV fed by a progressive-scan DVD player?
Can any of these formats be edited and then written back to tape without losing a lot of image quality?
Also interested if iMovie 9 is the same in these areas as FCE (which I already have).
    Thanks in advance!
    MikeR

So, it doesn't matter what I shoot in - the quality will be equal no matter if it's progressive to start with or interlaced? I might have thought that keeping things progressive all the way through would be the best for a DVD played on an HD set.

  • Will FCP support the new Sony V1U

I'm considering buying the soon to be released Sony V1U. Does anyone know if this camera will be supported by Final Cut right away or will we have to wait for NAB for an update?
    Thanks,
    Anne

Might need an update to work directly with captured files and all formats it shoots (unless it uses the same protocols that the XDCAM stuff does). Sony says that if you have their HDV devices (deck) you can play thru to it apparently in it's literature. Meaning you can capture it during a playback from the camera I guess. It does record to tape too, right? Sony:
In addition to typical 60i, the HVR-V1U offers 24p/30p progressive scan capture, enabling cinema and drama productions in its compact yet high performance unit. The camcorder also adopts the world's first 2-3 pull-down HDV recording system for storage of the 24p scanned images, keeping your existing HDV1080/60i HDV gear in action. Playback your 24p/30p scan footage using Sony HDV equipment you already have at hand, or feed it to a compatible Non-Linear Editing (NLE) system without changing your HDV deck or monitors - it’s as simple as that."
I'd not be the first on my block to buy one before they are in circulation and someone with first hand experience has reported that there's no hitches...
