Valid apple id rejected in imessage and facetime, valid apple id rejected in imessage and facetime

I have an ipod touch on ios 5.1.1 and I am unable to activate either imessage or facetalk.
The error i get is that my username or password is incorrect
I am completely sure i am using the correct password, I use it all the time to download apps.
I tried to log in about 10 times, and was very careful to check the password was being entered correctly (I watched that all the pop up characters were the correct ones)
Right after this happened I updated an app to test my apple id was working, it asked me for the password and I entered the same one that is being rejected by imessage and facetalk - it worked fine (as it always does ) to update an app.
I am connected to wifi (can download apps, browse the web, check email etc and can see that i have a wifi connection - there is no firewall etc on the connection i am using
Can anyone suggest why this is happening? I have browsed other threads and do not have an old username which is not an email (I have not ever used either of these apps before)
As above I am absolutely 110% without-a-doubt sure that I am using the correct valid apple id and password (which i also used to download an app update on the same device, then to log into this forum)
Other things work fine on the ipod, it is just facetalk and imessage (and apparently imessage depends on facetalk to work?)
The steps I have taken are as follows:
touch app
get started screen displayed
touch get started
- enter apple id screen displayed - correct email already displayed
I enter the CORRECT (trust me on this one is IS the right password)
click sign in buttonnavigated to next page which asks me to enter the email address I wish to use - there is an email address already there - a different one - but one of mine, (no idea how it got that - maybe because it is my facebook email and i have a facebook ap on the ipod linked to this email
anyway before i can change the email or if I leave it as it is and click next, it diverts me back to the sign in screen
error message is
"you were signed out of FaceTime because your Apple ID or password changed.  Sign in to turn on facetime.
I can then try and log in again, and repeat ad-infinitum, the steps above never getting past the email address page
Why does it think i have changed my password? I have not (and i am still able to download apps, log into this forum etc using the exact same login that i have alwys used since purchasing the ipod in december 2011)

I was able to get it working by logging in with an alternative email address. My primary email address/user ID for my iTunes account is my Gmail address, and that throws up the error whenever I try to log into FaceTime. When I log in using my iCloud email as the user ID, which is of course tied to the same iTunes/iCloud account, it works fine.

    This is an ongoing problem as you will see by searching the forum. 
    Out of curiosity, do you have 2 step verification enabled?  It was recently extended to include iMessage & FaceTime & I'm wondering if it might be causing some of the issues that some users are experiencing.

    I created a new apple id for my child and added it to my family sharing.
    I have used the apple id to successfully login to icloud and the itunes store on the ipod.
    But it keeps rejecting the same account for imessage and facetime - error message is to check my network connection.

    I had similar problem, and tried everything mentioned in the forums to fix it.  Then, randomly, I tried to send an imessage from my iphone to my daughter (who ONLY has imessage through her email, and therefore NO cellular option to receive) and Bingo- a box popped up asking me to sign in to my Apple account. Then it worked fine for everyone.  I don't know why it didn't think I was signed in, because I had signed in everywhere-  but that was the fix.

    The information that I provided about adding the phone number back to the iPad is valid and should work. Now as for the activation of messages, take a look at these support articles for starters. Hopefully, something in one of these will help.

  • We have three Ipads in our house.  We have one itunes account with multiple devices like two Iphones and Apple TV.   My question is about our three Ipads.   How can I set up the imessaging and facetime on all three devices while only using one Itunes acct

    Okay.  We have three Ipads in our house with only one Itunes account.   When I go into imessaging and facetime on each of the devices, it wants to start switching my wife's cell phone and then the three emails associated with each Ipad to the contact information for all of the Ipads.    As of this morning, only the imessaging and facetime are turned on my wife's iphone and ipad.   My kids imessaging and facetime is turned off.     Do you really have to have an itunes account for each device to make then work???    Any help would be very much appreciated.

    There is only one solution. Each user must have their own separate user account. All of their respective data would be contained in their separate user accounts. This also means each will have a separate iTunes Library. If you all use the same third-party apps, then each will have to purchase their own copies under their own Apple IDs. Some data sharing is possible. See:

    CREATE A NEW USER
    Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Users & Groups
    Decide on whether to setup as Admin or Standard User.
    Switch to the New User by logging out under the Apple in the Menu Bar or use Fast User Switching
    Fast User Switching allows other users to leave current applications and windows open. Depending on RAM, you might need to log out rather than use FUS.

    i just opened my ipad, started my apple account/I.D. and realized I put the wrong e mail. I was having trouble correcting my I.D on the Ipad so I went to my laptop and make the proper changes/slash e mail address I wanted for my apple ID. I got back to my ipad and try to download an app I can't because I have to sign in my apple account and I can't because it still has the irrelivant I.D/email address..
    So, i did what you said.. went to setting>app store> tapped on my e mail.. it asked me to sign in (with my invalid emails address showing). I signed in with the password I had created. It said "incorrect".. I went to reset password. I reset password, tried to sign in and it says again "unvalid password".. this is getting irritating.  I have been asking and no one knows what to do.

    and when I click on start using iphone, the iphone restarts itself and repeats the steps again !!!!!
    I've tried everything, restarting my iphone, doing the steps, respring, clicking on home and off button, EVERYTHING !!!!
    but it keeps redoing that stupid steps without any end
    please HELP ME!! I need my iphone back!!!

  • Logicboard replacement came with new serial that stops me from connecting w iMessage and FaceTime. Applecare ran out and now I am sure it is this issue... How can I get apple to honor the serial mess up?

    The story is that I have an imac i7 that was still under Applecare when the logicboard coraked.
    I brought it in for repair and got it back. Somehow imessage and facetime would never connect anymore and come up with connection errors yet everything else worked. I tried all tens or hundreds of suggestions over hte last few months and nothing worked.
    So I resorted to a clean hard drive repartitioning and install of Mountain Lion.
    To my surprise: it sill did not work.
    That;s when I found an obscure post that I am quite certain is the problem: the poster had the exact some symptoms I had and NOTHING worked. Hrs of phone support etc. Until it dawned on him that he had a logic board replacement after which the issue occurred. He found that his serial was no longer the same as the original item and came up as invalid on the apple website and was not listed in the "About" of his iMac.
    I immediately recognized the recent support symptom and motherboard replacement and checked the rest. And behold it is all exactly as he said. He had to bring it back to the service center and they put the original serial back in and everything worked again.
    Here is my problem: months of troubleshooting have passed and my iMac went out of Applecare warranty. Support does not warrant an exception for the serial online and the service center wants to get paid    I am not wealthy. This computer is my life and I need them to change the serial back to what it was when I purchased the machine. Can someone suggest how I get help. Apple is acting like M-soft in this respect.

    The only people who can possibly assist you with this is Apple Customer Relations, call your local Apple contact number and ask for Customer Relations then explain your situation clearly and politely (be firm but don't rant).
    You might want to investiage what the local laws are regarding defective goods and 'fit for use' definitions on warranties etc. Consumer Protection can be a useful tool to use or bargain with if needed ...

  • I can't sign in to my iMessage and FaceTime after getting a new apple ID account. What should I do to solve it?

    When I got my iPad I created a new apple ID it was working fine but then one day when I went to the app store and checked my apple ID, as usual it asked for a password, I typed the password in and was very sure it was the right one because i've been using it for a long time. Then it said incorrect password. I tried to type it in again and again and again but it still said incorrect password. We checked if it still exists on apple.com but then it said no apple ID found or no matches to our records or something like that. So I decided to get a new one but still used the same email. I found out that if 1 email is associated with 2 different apple ID's it may cause problems but as I said we checked if the old one still existed on apple.com it said it didn't so I thought it was fine to use the email again. After that the app store was working fine. I can install games and apps. I knew I had to sign in to iMessage and FaceTime again because of the I got a new apple ID but whenever I try signing in, it always says "Incorrect password" and sometimes "check you internet connection". I've tried signing in over and over again but nothing worked I still can't sign jn to iMessage and Facetime. What do you think I should do?

    It keeps saying an unknown error has occured. I have made sure that my apple id is verified and it works in itunes but it won't sign me in for my imessage or facetime account

    It may just be a problem with the Apple servers - I had that happen to me on a few occasions when FaceTime and Messages first arrived on the scene. The only thing that I can suggest is trying again - you obviously know your Apple ID and password are correct or you wouldn't have been able to log on to thse forums.

    im a new apple user...my facetime and imessages do not seem to be working properly...although when it asks to sign in and i do get through that window but when the verification process comes i dont know what happens but i am sent back to the sign in window....please help.

    I assume you have turned the Bluetooth on.... (Bluetooth not working).
    On the iPad, try a reset (hold the power and home keys down until the Apple logo appears). I do not have an iPhone so I have no suggestion there.

And then i try to change it with my phone number but always failed (i turned it off and on again but can't verify with my phone number). Then i erased my apple id on imessage and facetime, and the problem started, when i turning it on again and i need to enter my apple id and password, it said incorrect and i need to reset my password. And then i reset my password with a new one, and enter it again but incorrect again. I also try make a new apple id, but incorrect again. Besides, my appstore, game center, icloud can working with my apple id and password... Please help me with this issues...
