Valid pdfs crashing Reader when linked

If anyone could shed any light on this I'd be grateful.
http://www.dvbny.com/05_special/pricing.htm
The linked price sheet pdfs open in the browser on my
machines - I have
warned people how big they are but the customers want them.
Haven't
discovered how to turn off the acrobat in browser situation,
but I expect
most people have that setting as it seems to be the default.
The two page file crashes the Reader before the download is
complete. The
download stops half way through, until one accesses the
document further
(page 2), then it crashes. If I download the files they open
fine. I
realise everyone has different browser settings but I have
tried several
PCs, made smaller one page pdfs, always the same result. I
have outputted
the pdf from different programs and still the same.
The error report thingy "claims" Microsoft has notified Adobe
about it but
they haven't fixed it. Same result in Firefox.
It's just a price list, nothing special. Do these price lists
crash Adobe
Reader for other people? Don't know where else to look.
Thanks
Tom

Yes thanks, I was starting to think the same. Jewelry buyers
aren't too
techie so I was trying to make it as easy as I am able. I
realise now I
should've posted this to the acrobat group, as Dreamweaver
seems out of the
loop with this problem. Apologies.
Thanks anyway.

I've seen reports that networked based users cannot use Reader under Windows. The same may be true on a Mac. For some uses, Preview will work, for others I don't know. You could try to install Reader into the local applications directory as opposed the regular applications directory and see if that works.

  • Why do I not get the checkout option for a pdf type document when clicking on the document link in the SharePoint workflow task?

We are trying to use workflows to review and edit pdf files in sharepoint 2010. We are having a couple of issues and am hoping someone has the answer.....
    1)  When myself and coworkers click on the pdf document in the library, we get the check out option as expected.  However when we click on the document
link in a workflow task (on the sharepoint site), the pdf opens as a temporary file and we do not get the check out option.  Why does this happen?????
    2)  The same thing happens when we click on the document link in the workflow task email;   HOWEVER,  one of our co-workers does get the
check out option when clicking on the link in the email task.  Why would she get the checkout option using the email and not when clicking on the link in the task list on the sharepoint site ????  We have compared our internet settings and adobe
settings to ours and found no differences.
We are using Sharepoint 2010, Windows 7, IE8, Adobe Reader X or XI.  Some of us have Adobe Pro X and have the same issues.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you could not get the checkout option for a pdf type document when clicking on the document link in the SharePoint workflow task.
I try to reproduce the issue, however, no matter when I click the pdf type document in the library or click on the pdf document link in the workflow task email, it download the pdf doucment and then I can open it.
It will be better if you can descript how you
get the check out option as expected when you click on the pdf document in the library.
    Then I upload a
word type document to the library, no matter when I click the word type document in the library or click on the word document link in the workflow task email, I can open the word document directly and get the check out option as expected.
I recommend to use the other type docuemts to check whether the check out option works.
    Thank you for your understanding.

  • Preview crashes consistently when opening certain PDFs

Preview crashes consistently when opening certain PDFs. I have Adobe Acrobat Professional and it is able to read the PDFs. Preview declares that "Couldn’t open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize." and crashes. It is less than graceful. I also have noticed that every time it crashes, I lose 40MB of disk space.
Other than individually marking "bad" files as acrobat files are there any solutions to this poor behavior by preview.
I also need to know how to recover the disk space. I have no idea where the files are being created. I checked /cores, but no joy.

    Hi,
Try deleting the Preview and Sidebar preference files.
Open a Finder window. Select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left. Now open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
Move the com.apple.Preview.plist and the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist files from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
See if that makes a difference.

I already try to set the parameters on "Preference" of the reader , but it is useless.

  • When I convert a doc with hyperlinks into a PDF on a Mac links in the PDF don't work

Hey guys, please advise how to make a PDF on a Mac so that hyperlinks from the original file remain active and working in the PDF document? The links which look like a web address (http://www....) are converted correctly and open fine, but when a hyperlink is tied up to some piece of text (e.g., Watch on Youtube - and you can click on this phrase and the video opens) this link in a PDF file does not work, although it does in the original Word/PPT document.
When I make a PDF on a PC everything's fine: I can click on a link in the PDF and the website opens. But when I make the same operation on a Mac the links do not work...

There have been some methods posted by MAC users to address this issue. The MAC does not have the PDF Maker option that is available for the PC and so extra steps are needed. Sorry, but I do not know the process but would just suggest that you search the forum.

  • Automatically opening Acrobat reader when PDF form is downloaded

    Hello.
    Hope we are all well.
I am wondering if there was a  way to have the PDF form open up automatically in Acrobat Reader when the customer downloads it. Unfortunately I am dealing with people who aren't that internet savvy and usually impatient about it (they are tradies, mainly plasterers), so when they download the PDF form and try to open it, the web browser will try to open the PDF in another page making the "submit" button to stop working. Is there any tricks to bypass the browser from doing this so I can have it opened directly by acrobat reader if it is already installed on their pc? Cheers.

That's a shame. I have put a description on the page explaining (with a link) they will have to open in Acrobat for the submit button to work. I was hoping there might be a script to stop the browser trying to open the PDF form instead of Acrobat. Thanks for your reply .

  • AcroPDF.dll crash systematicaly when pressing TAB in any PDF

I am using the Acrobat ActiveX (AcoPDF.dll) for viewing PDF documents.
When a PDF is displayed, pressing TAB key several times makes the document to scroll to the end of document.
If I press TAB again, then the application crash.
    This happens with all PDF.
My application is written in C++, but I did a try with the sample (AcrobatActiveXVB) provided in the SDK (9.1), witthout any modification.
    The result is the same.
Does any body has experienced the same ? Is there a way to prevent AcroPDF to crash.
Considering that it happens systematicly, the Reader 9 activex can not be used to display PDF.
By the way, I did a try with the Reader 8 activeX and it worked fine without crash.
    Thanks for your help.

It is a problem of Adobe Reader 9 and Adobe Acrobat 9. Read this:

  • Indesign 5.5 crash issues when updating links

I am having crash issues when updating links and I don’t know how to trouble shoot the issues.
I have adobe creative suite 5.5 and I am using a third party plug in called wordsflow to allow updating of MS word documents without losing formatting in Indesign.
I have been in contact with the plug creator and they seem to think that the way the indesign importer is handling images is causing the problem.
I am not a particularly experienced Indesign user. How do I go about working out what the issue is?

At first it does appear that the plug in is the problem, however i suspect that the builders of the plugin are correct, in that it is the way in design in handling images in links.
the problem is worse when any image in anchored any where with in the document.
when the updating links screen pops up, the point where it freezes and then indesign crashes is infact on a linked image file consistantly.
broswing other indesign link issues it appears i am not the only person with image link problems.
My question is aside form turning off the plug in, what else can i do to search for the potential issue?

  • I am getting the following reading when I click on Firefox: "The application or DLLc:/programfiles/mozillafirefox/xul.dll is not a valid windows image

I am getting the following pop up reading when I click on the Mozilla Firefox icon located on my desktop: "The application or DLL c:/program files/mozillafirefox/xul.dll is not a valid windows image" I have always used mozilla and now I have no connection to the internet with it. I have tried to go to Mozilla.com to download again and I can't seem to locate a version to download.

michaeleen, you can fix this with a clean install of Firefox:
    1. Download the Firefox installer from [http://www.mozilla.com/products/download.html?product=firefox-3.6.7&os=win&lang=en-US this direct link] and save it to your desktop or other location.
    2. Make sure that Firefox is closed completely
    3. Delete the Firefox installation directory (On Windows, this is typically the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox folder that contains "firefox.exe" and other Firefox program files and folders).
    4. Reinstall Firefox by running the installer you downloaded previously.
Your personal settings, including bookmarks and history, will not be lost.

    Sorry, that's terribly unclear.
Is it crashing with BOTH the script and File > Export?
Is your script using exportFile or asynchronousExportFile?
If it crashes manually, have you tried disabling asynchronous exports per Re: Background PDF export Help?

  • Does Firefox automatically detect when links to websites are no longer valid?

There is a link within an application I am running. The link now points to an invalid URL. Does Firefox detect when links are not valid.

    Hello Dm.
Although possibly not related to your problem, I will remind you that the version of Firefox you are using at the moment has been discontinued and is no longer supported. Furthermore, it has known bugs and security problems. I urge you to update to the latest version of Firefox, for maximum stability, performance, security and usability. You can get it for free, as always, at [http://www.getfirefox.com getfirefox.com].
As for your issue, Firefox isn't able to detect if a link is not valid unless the server (where the site you are using is hosted) tells Firefox that it is not. Contact the site's webmaster about broken links.

  • Do you also crash Preview  when opening scanned document pdf file?

I recently crashed Mail when opening a message coming from my IAP with an attached pdf file. The cause is a crash of preview.app that I can repeat. Therefore the file (a scanned document) can be opened by Acrobat Reader. I found in some forum that AcrobatReader had a a similar problem a few months ago, now fixed. Any ideas as to why crashes occurs when I hit print from file or from a pdf print symbol?
All was working okay last week.

Do you have a local Apple Store or somebody locally that can assist you with this system?
Your Mac is easily old enough to be encountering hardware problems with your disks.  Old disks can and do fail, and your Mac is probably at least eight years old; more than old enough to be seeing disk failures.  I'd get a backup or two of your disk made onto external disks, and then look to upgrade and patch as described in this reply and in the earlier reply.  Preserve your data.  That disk-to-disk backup can be created with Disk Utility, or with whatever backup tool(s) you're using.
Once you have your external backup(s), Disk Utility has a repair function, which becomes available once you verify the disk.  If the online disk repair can't complete the repairs, then Disk Utility will tell you that you that you need to shut down and boot your installer DVD and use the version of Disk Utility available from the installer's Utilities menu; that's the second screen of the installer, IIRC.  (It's been several years since I've run 10.4, so I'm not entirely certain about that.  You do NOT want to commence the software installation that's available with that DVD.  That would be bad.)
After the repair, use Software Update ( > Software Update...) and upgrade to OS X 10.4.11; to the most current 10.4 version.  That might resolve this, if it's an isolated corruption.  (If the disk is failing, well, the disk is failing.)
As a guess, you're probably also headed toward needing some local help, and a hardware swap or hardware upgrade, too.
OS X 10.4 is also known as Tiger and the OS X 10.4.1 release is almost eight years old, and that particular OS X version also means your Mac system is based on a PPC processor and not on an Intel processor.
PPC-based hardware cannot be upgraded past version 10.5; past Leopard.  Snow Leopard 10.6 does not support PPC systems.
