I have the retial version of snow leopard 10.6.3 number on disk 2z691-6634a and when I run disk utility's /image/checksum 32 and select the DVD drive I get a checksum value of crc32 $a4703eb0. I was wondering if others have the same values for there retail or orignal Snow leopard disk?

You need to have the disc in order to create disk image of snow leopard installer disc. What did your machine ship with? If something later than SL, then why? If earlier, then you can buy the SL installer disc and make the disk image.

Snow Leopard Installation Disk Ejects - won't install

A brand new Snow Leopard Installation disk would not be read in a MacBook Pro 15" so I just thought I'd share my solution.
This installation disk was readable on every Mac that I tried except the one that I wanted to install Snow Leopard onto, which, by the way, could read other CDs and DVDs.
I ran TechTool just to eliminate any problem it may be able to handle.
The solution was to clean the DVD with a little dish soap and water and to blot it dry with a lint-free cloth. Once I was sure that the disk was totally dry I attempted the installation again and it worked.

Hans, will that Pioneer cause problems with this Tiger app? One comment I read on one forum said that non-Apple disk drives have to be disabled to run Tiger, so I wonder if that would solve this problem. I appreciate all the time you've given me to help solve this problem. Like most projects, a lot more is involved that appears at first.

Ring the online Store at the number given at bottom left of this page: it may still be possible to get the install disks for your Mac at a nominal cost. You will need to give them the serial number of your Mac.
If you can't get it that way, you can still purchase the retail version in the online Store - go to its webpage for your country and enter 'Snow Leopard' in the search box at top right.

Erased and copied Snow Leopard OS disk to Disk Utility partition

Hi,
I am no way a technical person and think i have ruined my ok working MBP. After alot of research, to save money I decided to do a clean reinstall of Snow Leopard (previously running Mavericks OS) and erase my old data and settings on the MBP, as it was running super slow and I wanted to go back to the old OSX. I have a 2009 MBP previously running Mavericks installed from Dec 2013. When I went into the disk utility screen after deleting everything and resetting information, I couldn't restore the Mavericks OS as I downloaded it from iTunes for free - said to get from a saved folder or something. So I clicked around and accidently copied/duplicated the old Snow Leopard installation disk that was inserted and restored it as the Hard Drive/Disk utility (see pic attached).
Not sure how to save this computer? Is there a way to reset it back to factory settings before I incorrectly clicked the wrong button and ruined it?
Any info would be helpful.

Here are photos of all the images that I think will help. The DVD copy is the one that I pop in computer. I haven't tried the other disk which was also a DVD, this one is called the applications disk.
With the restore screen on the HardDrive image, this is where I accidentally clicked a few buttons and copied the OSX install disk over the previous Mac hard drive.

How many Installs Can I do from a Snow Leopard Retail Disk?

I have an old Snow Leopard Retail Disk (10.6.3) that I used a few years ago. Our Macs have mostly been upgraded to Lion since then, but we still have a 2007 iMac running Leopard and want to run some legacy third-party software. We need to upgrade that iMac from Leopard to Snow Leopard, then upgrade via system update to 10.6.8 in order to run the legacy software.
I know we used this Snow Leopard retail disk to upgrade one computer to Snow Leopard already, and we might have used the disk to install Snow Leopard on an external hard drive as well but I'm not sure as it was a few years ago and that hard drive may have been archived and placed in storage.
My question is, is there a limited number of installs that we can do with this disk? Do we need to first uninstall Snow Leopard from one computer before we can install it on another?

Unlike Windows, the DVD or CD versions of the Mac OS (Snow Leopard or earlier) have no serial number, or even keep track of how many times you've installed it. It's all on the honor system of following the license you have, which as mende1 noted, is either a single computer license, or five in one household (not shared with friends or relatives).
Lion and Mountain Lion are a bit different. Macs that came with either OS have a machine specific version (for the necessary hardware drivers) and cannot be shared, other than with a 100% identical Mac. The App Store versions are intended for Macs that were released before the respective OS's, and contain only the hardware drivers for the Mac models they are listed to support.

Snow Leopard Installer doesn't detect my hard drive?! help!

After my earlier post, where my replacement 320gig hard drive is incorrectly (not GUID) partitioned, I backed everything up, made a time machine copy just to be safe, and set about formatting the entire drive, doing a fresh install, and then updating via one of my back ups etc.
However, when I tried restarting from the CDRom, it just hung on the Apple grey splash screen for about 10 minutes with nothing happening, I restarted and held one 'ALT' the two options were my hard drive and the Snow Leopard install disk - I selected the install disk and after short while I was presented with the installer.
The installer displayed no hard drive, nor did the disk utility within' the installer, I can't think what the problem could be, as, as soon as I ejected the installer cd, I booted straight back into my normal system (which I am writing this on now).
I really am stumped as what to do next, comments, suggestions and observations welcome :-D

I tried that and the both disk's pass the verification, the problem is the installer detecting my hard drive.
When i'm running 10.5 and try to install from the SL Disk it picks up the hard drive (but says it cannot install to this volume, use disk utility etc) - its when I restart and enter the installer via the splash menu, it fails to pick up my hard drive.
I cant see any other way of partitioning my drive to the required GUID, even when I made a seperate 20gig partition, it remains as Mac OSX Journaled on the same drive thats partition scheme is 'Apple Partition Map'.
Bootcamp will not help me either, I thought of creating a seperate partition and installing it to that, then reformatting the rest of the drive from within' SL, but Bootcamp says that it cannot modify the 'startup disk' and says it requires reformatting.
I really am stumped as to what to do next, I can't understand why the installer picks up the hard drive whilst its running, but when its in the installer it doesn't

Snow Leopard installation on Mac Mini has failed

Does anyone know whether Snow Leopard checks what hard disk is installed in order to satisfy installation requirements as I've fitted an SSD Hard Disk Drive in my Macintel Mac Mini and installing Snow Leopard has failed (no longer boots into any Operating System previous nor upgraded. (Mac OS X 10.5.8 previously installed)).

It may not have anything to do with a new drive installation. Snow Leopard has just "bricked" my Intel Mac Mini hard drive - the original one. The first attempt at installation failed, so I tried an erase and instal. It seemed to work - briefly but when I tried to restore apps and settings from a Time Machine back-up it "hung" with only one minute of restoration to go. Now the HD appears to have failed, since it is unable to find any system folder and booting up via the Snow Leopard disc and bringing up the disc utility shows a greyed-out HD drive.
Some people on the MacBook Pro forum report a similar problem with the hard drive after Snow Leopard installation.

Is it possible to use the snow leopard install disk for bootcamp setup?

I'm going to be installing a windows 7 partition through bootcamp on my macbook, but I can no longer find the two original install disks that it came with. So my question was whether or not its possible to go through the bootcamp process with the snow leopard install disk?

If so, then yes. use it.
Sounds to me like the Original Install Discs you refer to are OSX 10.5 Leopard ones, right ?
These won't work with Windows 7 since Windows 7 requires OSX Snow Leopard DVD at minimum for the Driver Installation and BootCamp Assistant version 3.x as well, which is also only avaiable in OSX Snow Leopard.

Tiger to Snow Leopard without disk

Hello everyone,
The hard drive on my 2.16 ghz white MacBook just gave up the ghost. Luckily, my computer fit the specs to have Apple replace it for free.
Earlier this year, I upgraded to Snow Leopard. I am currently living in Germany and didn't bring my Snow Leopard disk with me (obviously didn't think I would need it). I didn't think it would be a big deal, but when I got my computer back I realized many of the programs, including Adobe, don't run on 10.4.
So I was wondering if there was any way to upgrade to Snow Leopard without having to buy another disk. The disks that I've found over here are more than in the US and I can't shell out the money for that right now (poor student budget).
I would really love any tips that you could offer. Thank you!

Why Apple does what it does is something only Apple knows for sure, but consider that:
• To provide for what you suggest, there would have to be a unique serial or registration number or some similar way to prove that you did buy Snow Leopard, & it would have to be provided with every sale. This would be a hassle for Apple, for resellers, & for users.
• A disk failure is a rare event. Installing or upgrading to Snow Leopard is not. It is even rarer for users to have a disk failure & no access to their Snow Leopard installer disc.
• The OS installer still has to be obtained. Even if you could use a registration number (if you had that with you) to gain access to a secure site to download an image of the installer disc, you would still have to have access to a working Mac (with a functional copy of the Mac OS on it) to use the image file. Plus, you are looking at over 5 GB of installer data, a very large download.
• Your system discs are an essential part of your computer. They not only allow you to format & reinstall the OS but also are the only source for reinstalling bundled applications like iLife (which do not come with retail copies of Snow Leopard or Leopard) & for running the Apple Hardware Test.
• The Apple software license already allows you to maintain one backup copy of each of your Apple installer discs. If you travel, it is a good idea to take a backup copy of the essential discs with you. Not much help for you now I know, but something to remember for the future.

MAC OS X Snow Leopard install disk won't install "with this version"

I am trying to get ready for the Snow Leopard install disk to migrate from Mobile Me to ICloud. However, the disk install I received to start the process won't allow me to install saying I have the incorrect version to do so. I am up to date in all my software installs. What am I doing wrong?

If you have an iMac running 10.7.4 as it says in your profile, why are you installing Snow Leopard? If this is a different computer then it would really, really help to know something about it.

De-authorize Snow Leopard installation

I'm selling my old MacBook Pro, and I have a licensed copy of Snow Leopard on it. I'd like to de-authorize it prior to selling. My Snow Leopard installation CD is a 5-copy (family) version. How do I gain the authorization back? Thanks in advance.

There is no "authorization", per se. Since you have a family pack and hence can't provide a copy of SL to the new owner with the MacBook, you'll want to use the system installation disks that came with the MBP to erase the drive (highly recommended anyway, and I'd suggest going to the Security Options in Disk Utility and choosing the "Zero Out Data" option when you erase the drive) and reinstalling the original OS version.

Mac OX Snow Leopard installation from DVD failed

I tried to install the new OS Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3 (bought today) on my iMac. But is constantly failed (message: installation failed) and now it's in a loop where I can't get out. Because the only action there is is to try it again. What should I do?

What specific iMac model do you have? Does it meet these requirements?

To shut down the computer press and hold in the Power button until the computer shuts off. When you restart the computer you can eject the DVD as follows:
Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
4. Press COMMAND-E.
5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
/usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
If you are currently running Leopard and it's still working then do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If all is OK then reboot from your Snow Leopard DVD and try the installation again.
BTW, I encourage you to make a cloned backup of your current working system before trying to upgrade.

Do you mean some of your software does not work in Lion? Do you want to return to using Snow Leopard? If so, then do this:
Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.
