Value of iMac

I bought an iMac (2006) about 6 months after release. I have had major problems, like the HD constantly errors ($500 for a certified apple repair place to fix and more for the Apple store to repair) and now I have the OS on a external HD for almost a year now and the Superdrive can't burn CD's or DVD's. I had a G4 previously and had no problems what so ever and I bought that used.
I was a PC user before that and I have been thinking of getting a computer that actually work the way it was meant to and I have been thinking of going back to PC. I am getting the sense that Apple isn't as good as they represent themselves to be.
Has anyone else come into major problems like this? Shouldn't a computer run more the way it was designed for more then 2 years? Or is it just my fault for expecting integrity out of a $2000 computer?

David,
Sorry to hear of your problems but I think Geoge hit the nail on the head. There will be a small percentage of those that have issues but that will be the case with any hardware. As far as AppleCare is concerned if you do decide to get another Mac it's inexpensive insurance. I just called them today (the first time in almost a year) to get a new Aiport Express connected and received excellent service. BTW my issue as it turned out had nothing to do with the Apple products it was a Belkin router security issue. The Apple tech deducted that, helped me fix it and we got my problem solved.
Regards,
Roger

  • Strange...safari scrolls all the way down on random pages...

It seems that with one page or two, Safari loads them just fine, but upon completion of loading, it instantly moves to the bottom of the page...
this is VERY frustrating. Everytime I load the page I have to manually scroll back up. The page that this always happens with is torrentspy.com (no, not used for the torrents, but for their news).
Could someone check to see if it's just me, or does safari just have a problem with torrentspy? Thanks.

  • Better Value between Macbook Pro 17 inch stock or 27inc iMac i5 stock

I need some help, which would be the better value between a stock 17inch macbook pro and a stock i5 27inch iMac? Using it for school, small video and picture editing. Price not a concern, I'm just looking for the better value in the computer itself. Meaning resale, upgradeability, (plan to use for at least the next three years)!

I'm saying to myself why spend the additional $500 for a slower machine?
Um...because it's portable? Because if there's a blackout you can still use it for 8 hours? Because if you travel to another country you can still do your video editing there rather than waiting to get home with all that film and photography to do it? Because it fits in a bag and doesn't require a desk? Because it can be hooked up to larger monitors for presentations in class?
I mean, Dude, it may not seem like a "slower" machine is worth $500, but it's not cheap or easy to make something that is as fast and does as much as that 17" does in something that thin and that light. There is a battery, a camera, an light sensitive keyboard, a gorgeous screen, and all the other components squeezed into that narrow and limited diameter...and you think that's not wroth $500 extra dollars because it's slower than a 27" iMac? If you love the speed and power, go 27" iMac. It's a great, great, machine. Awesomely fast, powerful and beautiful. But don't tell us "cost doesn't matter" and "resale" is what you're interested in and then complain about the 17" costing extra but being slower. You're being dishonest about what matters to you there.
If cost of the machine and its speed matters (far more than portability)--and you want the fastest and cheapest, then it's the 27" iMac. If cost doesn't matter, and you want the best resale value for when you sell the machine after three years, then it's the 17" MBP. That's just how the market is. People like speed yes, but they love portability.
Edited to add: but you might want to wait. Many are saying that the MBP might get a bump to an i5 and that would improve the speed of a 17" considerably.

  • Crazy Page Setup values on documents transferred to new iMac

    Folks:
I'm helping a neighbor who had some important documents on an old CRT iMac, which we just replaced with a metal-front Intel-based iMac running 10.5.x (Great machine!) I've transferred all her files to the new machine. I also moved her Epson C86 printer to the new machine.
The files at issue are ordinary Appleworks 6 WP documents.
The Appleworks 6 application runs just fine on the new machine, under Rosetta (I guess). The documents open and appear just as they should on the screen.
The problem comes when trying to print. I open one of the documents, verify it looks right on the screen, and then I check the File-->Page Setup settings. The values that come up are for "Any Printer" and are crazy: for example, scaling is set at 1856% (or some such number).
I can adjust the settings for the Epson C86, US letter-sized, but as soon as I do that the document on the screen shrinks down to tiny. Nothing prints. Printing Preview shows a tiny document.
I haven't been able to figure out any way to adjust the Page Setup to get out of this. I guess the problem is that Page Setup parameters aren't always portable from machine to machine, even if the printer itself is the same. I don't know much about her previous setup. It's possible the documents had been maintained with Page Setup parameters for an entirely different printer
Workaround: I can open a new Appleworks documents and transfer the old document content to the new file by copy-and-paste. That solves the problem: The new document looks like the old one on the screen, Page Setup works just as expected, and the documents print just as they should.
I'm reluctant to apply this workaround because there are quite a few documents to transfer, and this work-around will set the creation and last-modified dates of the resulting files to the present, which is a slight disadvantage when it comes to managing her documents/
My question: Are there any other measures to deal with this issue? I'm imagining something like using "Option-File-->Page Setup" to completely clear any existing Page Setup parameters. Or.... ?
    TIA,
    Henry

    Hello
    It's an old oddity.
    My workaround is:
Save as AW5 document then open the newly created AW5 document with AW6.
This removes the embedded print record.
Added feature: it rebuilds the internal pointers so it drop possible ramping corruption.

What is the best value iMac config for hd video editing.?  I was going to go for i5 3.1 ghz with 4mb ram, but should I go further?  Thanks!

You have it currently installed? Can you go to the System Profiler and click on Applications (will take a while to populate) - take a look at your FCP and check what it says on the right - Universal, Intel, or PPC? It'll look like this:
If it's Universal or Intel, it'll run in Lion. However, the installer may or may not be PPC - that you may not know until you try to install. If you have it currently installed, then you could do what I did - move over all the files manually. I have a list of files for FCE and would assume they'd be the same with FCP: copy them from the old Mac and insert them in the very same spots on the new one.
Here is the list for FCE:

(It was published for an uninstall, but worked like a charm).

  • Value of my iMac

    Hi,
I would like to sell my iMac in order to buy a MacBook Pro. I would appreciate to have an idea of it's value. It's a 17 inch iMac with a PowerPC G4 processor of 800 MGhz. It has 768 Mb of SDRAM and a hard drive of 75 Gb. It's video card is a GeForce4 MX.
As I have never sold a computer before, and having absolutely no idea of how much a computer bought in 2001 and having the upper characteristics costs, could anyone tell me in what range it could be sold?
    Thank you in advance,
    Luc Pfister

    Bonjour Luc,
One way to find current market value on your iMac is to check completed listings on eBay.com for the same computer.. You will find the 'completed listings only' option under the advanced search link next to the search box on eBay's USA's main page. Click the 'completed listings' box and you can also refine your search using the pull down menu. I'm am not sure if eBay France has this search option, but it probably does; though, since eBay USA is much bigger, it will probably give you a better comparison picture..
That said, the last time I looked, which was about a year ago now, your system in perfect condition was getting anywhere between US $400 - $600 on eBay.com. Again, this was a year or so ago, before the G5 units flooded the market.

  • How do you find the value of an iMac

Just curious how and where to find the value of my iMac 20 inch

    Welcome!
Find your exact model from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.html
Then click its link. The full specifications have an estimated used price value near the bottom:
There are a lot of 20-inch iMac variants, so you need to at minimum do "About this Mac" to see what it shows for processor speed and type to find your model on the index.
The last update of estimated prices was done last August. Prices on that site tend to be at the top of the range.

  • Best iMac Value?

I'm considering a new iMac, but the playing field has become very confusing. In your opinion, which of the 2008 iMacs (new and old) currently offer the best value?
BTW, we'll be using this computer for general purposes as we as a few games, like World of Warcraft and Warcraft III Frozen Throne.

  • IMac 3.06, Fans won't move past default values

    Hello,
I have my iMac 24" model. Recently, my fans only stay at the default values. CPU: 1199, HD: 1199, and optical 698.
This is worrying me. When playing World of Warcraft, they used to go up, as the computer would get warmer. What can I do??
I have tried a PRAM/SMC reset, and they fans are still stuck.
    Thanks,

Well I did an Apple Hardware Test, and all passed. My CPU fan is finally starting to move, I'll keep an eye on the HD/Optical bay?
That's weird, but as soon as I post, looks like they are kicking back in! Just my luck lol

  • 24" iMac. Best value, new or old?

I'm getting ready to purchase a new 24" iMac. The difference in price between a new previous generation iMac and the new one is about $200 AFTER I upgrade the memory on the old one to 2 GBs. Is the new version really $200 better than the old?
We'll be using this new iMac for general stuff (i.e. DVDs, music, Microsoft Office, Internet, and some gaming, mainly Wow).
    Thanks!

    Hello kcrossley
The New iMac's are slightly faster than the previous white iMac's! If you prefer the matte finish display over the glossy at an even better price, check out the 24" white refurb. in the link below.

  • Value of upgraded RAM in imac 27" quad core

    Friends,
I have a 27" imac i7 quad core on order. I do a fair amount of editing in FCE and Aperture. Does anyone have any sense of whether there would be a noticeable difference in processing speed if I upgrade the RAM to 12gb, versus 8gb or 4gb? Are there any RAM benchmarks out there?
    Thanks!
    Steve

Well, yes, mixing & matching is fine, your system will run (of course, that assumes you have the correct kind of RAM ).
Mac memory architecture supports dual-channel memory access. Depending on the model (G5, Intel Core/Core2 Duo/Quad Core), it uses 64-bit data paths or 128-bit paths. If the DIMMS are matched, you get the benefit of the maximum speed of dual-channel access. If the DIMMS are not matched the system has to revert to asymmetric mode, which is slower. How much slower depends on all sorts of things.
Understand, that's not a complete technical explanation, but it hopefully makes the essential point. More RAM trumps matched DIMMS. However, you made a significant investment in your Core i7 iMac, if you're going to add RAM, why not buy matched DIMMS?

  • Is it possible to remove Yosemite? Our iMac is excruciatingly slow since its installation and I question its value

    Possible to un-install Yosemite?

Thank you - am currently attempting the backup bit so unsure how/if this helps (2 hours so far)
The backup must date from before you installed Yosemite, it's too late for this method if you already installed without a backup.
You'll need to erase the disk completely to go back, so now make a backup of your files, use Time Machine.

  • My 2009 iMac freezes and won't run more than one application at a time - how can I fix this?

Help! My iMac has been getting worse regarding freezing, especially when trying to open iPhoto. It will load slowly, and then I get the pinwheel of death for ever, until I shutdown and try over again. It usually takes several tries, and usually overnight. How can I resolve this issue?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|timed? ?o' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Imac is no longer able to open the Configuration file

    Hi ,
I have an imac ( ilamp) 20' connected to ADSL, via Netopia Router which is connected to the Airport extreme connected to imac, for the PB Aluminum Tiger 10.4.5. we both can connect. PB can print via imac/printer.
The imac is no longer able to open the Configuration file, when i enter the pswd which is correct, i get the message "The Airport Admin. Utility was unable to read the configuration of the selected base station an error occurred while reading the configuration "
My Beau updated Airport to V5.7, this is the first time since the update I've tried to access the conf. file for the imac which i have done numerous times prior.
I have a new base station Ip address 254.128.0 in Airport Utility Admin, on the imac which does not reflect my network settings anywhere, and is not what it use to be, i think, it was one value different than the PB.Base station IP. I do not know how it changed neither one of us changed it.
I tried using the Airport Setup assistant (imac), I received this message:
"Appropriate Airport hardware was bot found on this computer,if you recently
Installed, an Airport card, please shut down your computer$ make sure the card is properly istalled."
The imac does not have a card, nor do i think it needs one.
I would like to be able to at least open the configuration file.
Thank you for reading my post.

Hi Kes, a star for the company !
I made an error on my first post I have a Netopia modem, Airport router.
And so it remains, i guess that there must be an easy answer somewhere
that I am missing that I/we should read, some direction to that would be helpful, and I would be very appreciative.
As I said the password had been set, and it is not an issue of that being forgotten, i wondered if it was changed back to "public" tried, not it.
particular because everytime the imac wakes one of the folders on ( no one else in office just me and boyfriend and it is his work folder he has a copy on the PB.( the folder on desk top has been clicked on, the one with sensitve info, i have backed the folder up and secure trashed it, just in case some security issue hacking has taken place, thats closing the barn door after the fact.
    Good luck,w/ this Q.
