Value of my iMac

Hi,
I would like to sell my iMac in order to buy a MacBook Pro. I would appreciate to have an idea of it's value. It's a 17 inch iMac with a PowerPC G4 processor of 800 MGhz. It has 768 Mb of SDRAM and a hard drive of 75 Gb. It's video card is a GeForce4 MX.
As I have never sold a computer before, and having absolutely no idea of how much a computer bought in 2001 and having the upper characteristics costs, could anyone tell me in what range it could be sold?
Thank you in advance,
Luc Pfister

Bonjour Luc,
One way to find current market value on your iMac is to check completed listings on eBay.com for the same computer.. You will find the 'completed listings only' option under the advanced search link next to the search box on eBay's USA's main page. Click the 'completed listings' box and you can also refine your search using the pull down menu. I'm am not sure if eBay France has this search option, but it probably does; though, since eBay USA is much bigger, it will probably give you a better comparison picture..
That said, the last time I looked, which was about a year ago now, your system in perfect condition was getting anywhere between US $400 - $600 on eBay.com. Again, this was a year or so ago, before the G5 units flooded the market.

  • How do you find the value of an iMac

Just curious how and where to find the value of my iMac 20 inch

    Welcome!
Find your exact model from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.html
Then click its link. The full specifications have an estimated used price value near the bottom:
There are a lot of 20-inch iMac variants, so you need to at minimum do "About this Mac" to see what it shows for processor speed and type to find your model on the index.
The last update of estimated prices was done last August. Prices on that site tend to be at the top of the range.

  • IMac 27' Mid 2011 Random Shutdowns - Static on start up

    Hello everyone,
I will try to explain step by step what's been happening to my computer for the last month:
(english not my 1st language so please excuse my grammar)
I use my computer mostly for work, I'm a web developer I've never done some kind of modification to my OSX since my limitations are to the web & I casually use it for gaming on windows via Bootcamp, after almost three years of no problems my computer decided to restart randomly, mostly happened while playing a game on Windows.
I started doing some checks with Apple Hardware Test & it did return an error which appeared to be related to HDD fans & then I remembered that especially this iMacs (Mid 2011 iMac 27) could have HDD issues & apple launched a replacement program https://www.apple.com/support/imac-harddrive/, I did get the email from them but I ignored it until now.
    The error it showed: 4M0T / 4 / 40000003: HDD-1442
I took to it to an apple authorized distributor to get my replacement thinking it could be related to my HDD as well & not only my fan, after a few days they called me telling that in fact the fan was full of dust, so they did clean the entire computer & asked apple for a HDD replacement since the program still runs.
3 days after I got my iMac back with a new HDD & a clean computer... so I started to reinstall everything I work with... Sublime Text, Adobe Cloud, Terminal, Xcode & Eclipse, everything seemed to be okay, finally I decided to reinstall Windows 7 with Bootcamp (Sadly I need it for IE testing) the next day random shut downs started to happen again with a new issue.... static on start up screen or random stripes will appear on the screen while using it & shut downs started to happen more frequently but it needed to restart about 2-3 times to be able to fully start.
I started running AHT again to check it & then same error appeared, just a different end number code:
    4M0T / 4 / 40000003: HDD-1223
I then took it asap to my authorized distributor, they ran apple AHT in front of me & no error showed up, I explained that the random restart, static or stripes would happen randomly, it didn't matter if I was doing high processing stuff or just watching random stuff on the web, so they kept it.
The next day they called & were able to find that indeed the fan was still malfunctioning, the AHT came positive, they asked apple for the replacement, which cost me around 35 bucks.
4 days after they finally received the fan & change it so I got my iMac back & I reinstalled everything again, including windows 7.
I decided to leave my computer on Windows all night just to make sure everything was okay right when I wake up I hear the start up sound, oh gawd.... it restarted again.... indeed it logged back in Windows 7 & it prompted the usual Windows error when the computer shuts down the wrong way. I tried to not take it seriously, I was installing everything I need in Windows as well, browsers, Adobe CC, fliezilla & sublime but it was randomly shutting down again.
After all this I've ran AHT with no errors appearing, just new different issues.... sigh...
-Now my computer will actually shut down even while doing AHT but no error will show up (if AHT ends before restart happens)...
-It won't restart now, it just remains like half-on, I have to turn it off manually so it can actually restart.
-Same static appear on start up screen, but now it will try to restart when it happenes.
         -No color stripes so far.
I tried resetting PRAM/NVRAM but it didn't work.
I was trying to watch a video on youtube but it did restart with a new thing that never happened before...
Right after OSX started a message prompted telling me that an error occurred and caused a restart so I opened it & the first thing that calls me attention is the line which says "Windows Server" & asked myself if it could be related to my windows partition, I decided to delete it, but nothing changed, I tried by repairing my disk & permissions with Disk Utility & voila! now it seems to be running fine... in fact I was able to write this message with no trouble at all...
No AHT errors so far, so what the **** is going on?
I'm worried that it could be my GPU but I have no idea... AHT is not helping me :/
Here's the message i was able to recover from the OSX log:

  • Video tearing on my 24" iMac

I have been having an issue with my 24" iMac for the past couple of months and I was wondering if you have heard of this issue before. I am getting what I guess would be described as video tearing. On occasion, and with no obvious pattern to it, I will get a weird horizontal line of noise that goes across just a certain open window, not the entire screen. I have been able to take screenshots of this, but I don't think I can post those in the discussions.
Anyhow, it happens in Firefox, Word, Mail, etc. There does not seem to be any program that is immune to this issue, and it doesn't happen all the time. It appears to be quite random.
I have checked the Apple Support site and the only thing I found were some old discussions about a tearing issue with previous generation iMacs. If I remember correctly, they were pretty old iMacs. Nothing about this issue in the recent past.
The video tearing sometimes goes away if I scroll up/down the window, and sometimes it doesn't. Though, more often than not, it goes away by scrolling.
My machine is coming up on a year old next month, so if I need to use my warranty, I need to do it soon.
Have you heard about this issue at all? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
My system specs are as follows:
    24" Intel iMac purchased 9/06
2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
    1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
I have not upgraded the hardware in anyway.
    Thanks again for your help!

    Hello lizardsrdizzy!
Did this video tearing issue for sure just start happening, or did you just notice it for the first time? I ask only because this sounds like the known Apple/ATI issue that many of us with ATI video cards have had, but only eventually noticed.
HOWEVER, since you do NOT have an ATI video card, I'd definitely recommend you need to pursue this flaw immediately within warranty/AppleCare.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86823
I strongly recommend adding AppleCare to maintain the value of your iMac, either for your own use, or for eventual resale. Considering the original cost of your setup and the still rather high cost of replacing a 24-inch display, at full cost AppleCare will be a bargain and that cost will either be fully returned to you the first time you need to use it, or when you resell your iMac. Discounted it's available from Amazon and various Mac sellers.
If you need to get a bigger bargain, occasionally they show up, but give yourself time to find one on eBay, and refer to my recent post here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4980575#4980575
Best of luck, and please return to let us know the resolution of the matter.

  • Does the iMac G5 get too hot?

    Greetings to all.
I would like to start a thread about the iMac G5 and heat. I found a few old threads, but I would like to bring that topic up again.
I have a 1st Generation iMac G5 (purchased end November 2004). For the second time since November 2004, it was defective and the Logicboard was replaced (so my Apple Dealer told me).
First time, in November 2005, the screen went pink. Second time, earlier this month, my Mac didn't boot anymore.
The full amount for the repair (including shipping to Apple (Belgium), work hours, etc.) was over 500.00 euro (about 700 USD for you, Americans).
I believe that the iMac G5 (at least: my 1st Gen one) is simply getting too warm.
The day before, I installed "Hardware Monitor". It gave the following (average) temperatures:
    CPU: 60.6 - 63.8° Celsius (141-164° F)
    HD: 57.5° C (135.5° F)
It is my opinion that the (my) iMac is getting too hot to be "healthy". I have 2 PC's, in which I installed extra fans (at the back and at the side). One of these, with an Athlon64 3000+ (1.8 GHz) and a 120 Gb Seagate Barracuda gives (average) temperatures for the:
    CPU: 36.5° C (97.5° F)
    HD: 26° C (78.5° F)
My second PC, an old (modded) HP Vectra, with an Intel P4 at 1.6 GHz and a 80 Gb Seagate Barracuda, gives as average temperature (HD only):
    HD: 37° C (98° F)
It may not be correct to compare my iMac with PC's - but harddisks are harddisks, wheather it is a Western Digital (250 HD in my Mac) or a Seagate (PC HD's), and it is only logical that a(n average) HD temperature of 57 degrees Celsius (128° F) in the long term can not be healthy, while the harddisks of my PC's are a lot, lot cooler.
The PPC, too, gets much hotter than my Athlon CPU (and the P4 most likely too).
Therefor: is my suspicion correct that the/my iMac G5 in general is getting too hot for its own good? Even though it may be summer here (Belgium), I still find such a difference in heat values between my iMac and my PC's not "right".
Both the times that my iMac was defective, the Logicboard was replaced.
Is it possible that in both cases heat is the problem (directly or indirectly) of the defects of my iMac?
Basically we have a desktop computer constructed like a laptop, with all the hardware stuffed together in a very tight space. Why did they not keep the heat issue more in mind, when the iMac G5 was designed?
I believe that the heat is a very negative factor in the/my iMac G5. If I will have to pay such a small fortune, every time my Mac breaks down, being a Mac owner will become quite expensive.
iMac G5 (PPC), 17-inch, Superdrive, Mac OS X (10.4.10) 1.5 GB RAM, 250 Gb Western Digital HD
iMac G5 (PPC), 17-inch, Superdrive, Mac OS X (10.4.10) 1.5 GB RAM, 250 Gb WesternDigital HD
iMac G5 (PPC), 17-inch, Superdrive,   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   1.5 GB RAM, 250 Gb WesternDigital HD

Your Mac should have been repaired under the Apple power supply or video and power issues as long as your serial numbers were covered.
As far as normal operating temps are concerned, my Rev A is at this moment, running at CPU T-Diode 144∘and my Hard Drive is at 128∘so your temperatures seem well within normal ranges.
Yes, the machines tend to run a bit hot, but as long as the ambient temperature is not too high, they are fine. The failures were originally cause by a bad batch of capacitors but since those have mostly been replaced, the machines are much more reliable.
Some people train a small fan on the back of the computer to keep it cool, that may help you.

  • Does Apple have a trade-in program for 2009 iMac (to purchase a brand new iMac or Mac Pro?

I have an Apple iMac11,1 with 16Gb memory, 2 Tb drive, Superdrive, QuadCore 2.8 I7 processor, ATIU Radeon HD 4850 Graphics board with 512 VRam.   I'm considering a new computer (either a new i7 iMac or the MacPro desktop) and was wondering if there is a used market within this community or if Apple has a trade-in program for older iMac's.    Does anyone know?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
There's no a trade-in program, but if you recycle it, you will get an Apple Gift Card with the value of the iMac that you can use to buy a new Mac at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store > http://www.apple.com/recycling

  • IMac 400 MHz G3 DV - DVD Firmware

    Hi,
    I got hands on a :
    iMac 400 MHz DV (G3 - M5521)
    PowerMac2,1 (PowerPC 750)
    Order No. M7493LL/A*
    EMC: 1821
    DHHS: LA
    ATI Rage 128VR (2D/3D) AGP 2x (8MB VRAM)
    Date Oct. 5, 1999
    Disc Date July 19, 2000
I already updated the firmware to 4.1.9 and installed Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.11) and OS 9.2.2.
I currently have the Matshita 8184 (Panasonic) DVD ROM (SlotIn) with Firmware AA31.
I read there was a AA27 before and I also read that there is an update 1.0
When I tried to install Firmware Update 1.0, it said, it already got updated.
I even found Firmware Update 1.1 for the DVD ROM (fixes audio cd readability)
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1021740/dvdrom.html
(but it clearly sayys only for 400MHz DV Special Edition. More about that in the next chapter)
I wanted to test the machine using your Apple Hardware Test, but I was told, that there never was a AHT for my 1999 machine.
I was also told that there was a "iMac 400 MHz DV Special Edition" in mid 2000, which supported the AHT (1.0.1 (?)) and its only difference to my iMac 400 MHz DV would be the ATI 128 Pro instead of a 128vr. (?)
Are there any other differences ? Would that AHT run on my machine then ? I ask because :
I read that AHT 1.1 might work on my machine as well :
Apple Hardware Test 1.1 for IMac G3,....?
    So, questions would be :
1.) What other differences, except for the Graphics Adapter are between my iMac 400MHz DV and the iMac 400 MHz DV SE ?
2.) Is there a Hardware Test for my iMac ?
3.) Will the DVD Firmware Update 1.1 install on my Matshita 8184 (Panasonic) DVD ROM and which version would it be ?
Or does the iMac 400MHt DV SE has a differentr DVD ROM model and if so, which one ?
4.) Is there a way to choose between OS 9 and OS X on booting up ? Pressing "C" will only show the OS that I selected via StartVolume before.
    Thanks for your time.
    Regards,
    iMac1999

I have a lime-colored G3 iMac DV (400 MHz) from 1999.  The iMac DV SE that shipped in 2000 had a 500 MHz processor, a 30 GB hard drive, a 4x DVD-ROM drive, the marginally better ATI Rage128 Pro GPU, and 128 GBs of SDRAM.  It was available in Graphite or Snow.  The internal DVD-ROM drive may have had a sequentially newer model number, than that used in the 1999 models.  I wouldn't be concerned about updating the firmware in your DVD-ROM drive - it is what it is - a 15 year-old computer with similarly dated hardware.  I didn't receive an AHT disk with mine, and have had no reason to run it anyway.  If you would like a much more modern internal DVD±RW drive, you can buy one here for $149.  Obviously, that exceeds the value of your iMac.  With onboard FireWire ports, I have used external CD-RW and DVD±RW drives, rather than replace the internal drive.  A common problem with those slot-loading optical drives occurs when the neoprene sleeved rollers (that pull in and roll out the disk) get dry/slick with age.  This will cause slipping and is usually indicated when the disk repeatedly gets stuck, as the motor keeps churning to eject it.  I maxed out the memory at 1 GB and installed an 80 GB hard drive, but that's all.  As for the resolution setting, I wouldn't be concerned about using a 60 Hz refresh rate (and dealing with the annoying flicker).  Just select the optimal resolution & refresh setting.  The greater concern for component failure in those iMacs is its Power-Analog-Video (P-A-V) board, which is the heart of the system's power.  Replacement requires previous experience with CRT repair, because of the potentially dangerous stored electrical charge that must be properly discharged in order to swap P-A-V boards.  Finding a new "old-stock" P-A-V board would be difficult, if not impossible today.  Installing a used part with unknown remaining service life could be a waste of money.  If you wish to boot from your Tiger installation, you can press/hold down the "X" key when you power ON the computer.  That model also supports using the Startup Manager, which you can read about here.

  • IMac G5 I need newer Software OS..HELP!

I have a iMac G5 with Lepord 10.5.4 OS on it. I need to upgrade the software. Which should I go with? Mountain Lion? Snow Lepord?

Great...give the on-line places a look so you have an idea of the market value of your iMac...a working computer is of value to someone and you may as well get what you can for it.
When you look at the Apple on-line store, again look at the refurbished units...you can find some great deals there.  Many are units that were demos, have had new batteries put in if portable, new cases, come with a new computer warranty...and they have been fully tested so work great.

  • My iMac hard disk has crashed twice, needing reformat, but appears to work after reinstall. Is this a hardware problem or normal?

The hard disk in my late 2009 iMac has failed twice in the same way. The symptoms have been:
    * First, the system starts to "stutter", freezing up at random intervals for some seconds.
    * This goes on for days or weeks, increasing in severity until I verify the hard drive
    * The disk check shows the disk is in need of repair, and the repair attempt requires me to boot from install DVD
    * When I repair the disk from the tool on the Install DVD, the repair fails and the disk is no longer usable
    * Reformat, reinstall and restore from Time Machine and everything works fine again
This happened once in end 2011, and now again recently. Is this something that is normal, or an indication that the hard drive is failing in some subtle way?
If the latter, would it make sense to replace it or will that cost me more than the value of the iMac at this point? As I understand this is not something for the fainthearted to attempt on their own.

Could be that issue with a cable not reporting the thermal
sensor status, as equipped in the original hard disk drive...
•Proprietary Cable can put brakes on upgrading Late 2009 iMacs - OWC blog:
    http://blog.macsales.com/2751-proprietary-cable-can-put-the-brakes-on-upgrading- late-09-imacs
•Diagnosing 2009 & 2010 iMac Fan Speed issues after upgrading the Main hard drive:
    http://blog.macsales.com/19617-diagnosing-2009-2010-imac-fan-speed-issues-after- upgrading-the-main-hard-drive
Thus the local recommendation to replace the HDD with
one of the same brand & model with internal sensor; &
often with a service if this type, the original cables are
inspected and replaced. Sometimes in the process of
disassembly the originals can be messed up, too.
    {iStat pro widget? handy if you can find it now}
But the sensor is inside the hard disk drive.
Your SSD has none. So the computer may
be overheating without feedback to run fans
at a speed matching the demands of CPUs.
If the iMac overheats (or is led to assume so) it will shut off.
A possible work-around is suggested, but may not work.
Matching parts with the model is important.
    Hopefully this helps...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Importing Mailboxes from 10.3.9

The motherboard on my venerable slot-loading 1999 iMac DV, running 10.3.9, finally bit it recently. The cost to repair with labor far exceeded the value of the iMac, so I was not so hurt to have to go out and buy a new MacBook...which is just an awesome computer so far. Anyway, I rescued the old 80GB harddrive from the iMac and bought an external enclosure which works great as well. I've been able to easily import my iCal calendars, Safari bookmarks and iPhoto photos. However, when I try to import my mailboxes from OS X Mail, they show up as "greyed out" and cannot be chosen for import. Is there something I'm not doing right? It's not a really big deal, but there's a few I'd like to have for record-keeping. Thanks!
    Curt
    macBook, 2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

When I switched from a previous iMac with 10.3.6 to this one, I did the following (and, amazingly enough, it worked even though I went from Panther to Tiger):
On previous iMac, went to Users/Library/Mail/Mailboxes and made a backup copy of each and every .mbox folder (I have a lot of them, not just inbox, sent, etc) and put them all in one folder named import (or whatever) on a CD.
On the new iMac, I opened Mail and after clicking on "import" under File menu, I chose the new import folder on the CD and all my mailboxes with all contents intact were imported without a hitch.
A couple of Macs ago, I did it a bit differently and it also worked: after making a backup copy of every .mbox folder, I went to Users/Library/Mail/Mailboxes on the new computer, trashed each and every (empty) .mbox folder and manually put in all the backup folders. That method worked also, but I can't remember which OS version I was on at the time.
You might want to try either or both of these methods - just don't empty the trash (method #2) until you know things work as they should.
    Hope this helps.

  • Slot CD Drive

Where can I find a replacement CD drive for my iMac 400MHZ DV (Special Edition)? Preferably a DVD/CDR drive.

The slot-loading (CRT) iMacs shipped with a CD-ROM, a DVD-ROM, or a CD-RW drive, but no combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive. If you don't mind spending more than the current market value of your iMac DV400, you can buy an internal DVD±RW drive for $149. Otherwise, I'd search eBay for a pulled drive, either a DVD-ROM or CD-RW. The FireWire port gives you external options for a SuperDrive, such as this one from OWC, that has a Pioneer DVD±RW drive.

  • Adresbook does not sync

when I add a new adres in adresbook on my Imac it does not sync with Iphone when syncing wired

    Still my problem returns regularly.
I still have to reset Isync everytime I change or add an adress in adresbook.
Also Adresbook copies email adresses (Dutch IRS ones...) and shows them all 7 or 8 containing som email adresses (all the same ones thats a relief?)
    Another problem with my Iphone
I can use all features exept sending mail.
My apple account is still .mac.com but is not accessible for some years now.
Entering Itunes and Itunes store is through .mac.com account but I cannot retreve mail from that account (of course) but sending mail through my dutch KPN mail doesnot wordk whatever smtp server or password I enter, the message is allways that I cant send mail though I have copied the values from my Imac which works fine sending and receiving mail (entourage, mail also doesnot work)

  • Dragging a Eudora Email onto desktop ok with 10.4.1 not with 10.6.3.

With my prior 10.4.1 Mac Operating System I was able to drag a eudora email message onto my desktop.
I have upgraded to 10.6.3 Mac Operating System and now when I try to drag an email onto my desktop it will not allow it. Also I had my prior eudora email files in a folder have turned into text messages instead of the previous eudora email form.
I found a way to open it with by converting them.
My question is how can I drag an email onto my desktop again?

If it were your machine and you
knew that you were in that state it mighthave been
worth defering the effort but you never know
what/when someone else may advise her to do a PRAM
reset and bang - major snag.
    I hope she thanks
you for all the time! I think about £60 is the going
    rate for Mac work!
    mrtotes
yeah, better to do it now... who knows what some boyfriend of hers will try with it!
£60?! around $110, i think- wow. More than the value of the iMac. BUT- she's a flower seller and in appreciation is giving me flowers for weeks for my labor, at least. I have all these starving-artist friends and aquaintances who have no money or know-how, but need computers. These old iMacs are perfect for them if they're not at death's door (the iMacs, not the friends). Non-profit ... but good karma! Good way to keep ol macs plugging away, too.

  • Upgrading to OS X 10.3

    Hi all.
Finally taking the plunge. Looking for best price on OS X 10.3. and on the memory. Also any input on what I need, and/or need to do.
Here's what I've got on my iMac:
    MEMORY
    Location: Size Memory types
    DIMM0/J13 64 MB PC100-22S
    DIMM1/J14 256 MB PC100-322S
Going to add PC 100 SD-DIMM 256 in place of the 64.
    Processor Info PowerPC G3
    Machine speed 350 HZ
Read on one site's product specs for OS X Panther that I need 600 MHZ. Is this necessary, or will my 350 do the job?
Boot ROM version $0004.19f1--does this mean my firmware is
    up-to-date?
    HARD DRIVE
    Driver Version: 3.2.6
    Mac partitions: 1
    Size: 7.49 GB
    Capacity: 7 GB
    Available: 3.2 GB
    Percent full: 54
Going to back-up to another hard drive
    Volume format: Mac OS (HFS+)
We don't have any games on and don't intend to have any, nor do we do anything with video.
Any input greatly appreciated. Thanks for all the help in the past.
    Paul

Your firmware is up-to-date. I would recommend replacing the 64 MB DIMM with a 512 MB DIMM. Given the machine's slow clockspeed, the more RAM you have the better overall performance will be. However, Panther will not be very swift on your computer because it lacks both the CPU and Video horsepower OS X really needs. Nevertheless, Panther will work on your computer.
I recommend that you replace the hard drive with something bigger. Panther requires 3-4 GBs during installation and at least that amount of free space maintained during operation. You currently do not have sufficient space on the hard drive.
I also recommend replacing the internal backup battery located on the computer's motherboard. It's a 3.6 V, 1/2 AA size lithium cell you can purchase at Radio Shack or battery stores for about $10.00.
Given the current market value of your iMac, I might question spending this money on upgrades considering that the cost of upgrading will exceed the value of the computer.

  • Mavericks start up

when I start up my imac, I get a grey screen with white lettering (what looks like internal values) and then iMac immediately restarts.  Chimes both times.
Not sure what might be going on.  The reboot works-with the exception of the error messages.

First you might want to uninstall these per the developers instructions
    org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv          4.1.8
    com.Logitech.Unifying.HID Driver          1.2.0
    com.Logitech.Control Center.HID Driver          3.6.0
    com.seagate.driver.SeagateGoFlexBlockSizeAdjuster          5.2.2
Then I see you have third party ram. You might want to remove it and see if the panics stop.
