Value of upgrade

In the rear view, is the value of the add features of 2.0 over 1.5.6 worth the price?
As I am not worthy of the upgrade price, I would like to hear some thoughts before I fork out the $199.

yes.
the v2 converter is a big improvement on the 1.1 converter. my photos look so much better; subjectively speaking of course. high-ISO images are also cleaner.
some of the new tools are very powerful, and the interface has been simplified. the new Black Point tool and the command- shortcuts to see the blown and blacked-out regions of the image as you move the sliders are incredibly useful.
keyboard shortcuts now work correctly irrespective of which keyboard input method you use. I use the Dvorak keyboard layout and A1.5 was a hassle without customising the shortcut preference document.
apparently, A2 is faster than A1.5 but I still see the beachball (on my MacBook Pro) when moving between images; not significant though.
I haven't played with galleries or web pages yet, or with printing. that will require some time, and I would like to analyse their gallery templates to see how many changes they made to the template system; i.e., so that we can build custom templates. I would like to see discussion and results from other people regarding sharpening in the Print dialog. personally, I purchased PS for one specific purpose; to use PhotoKit Sharpener and sharpen my images to near-perfection for my printer without having to think about it. A2's Sharpen-in-Print-dialog won't completely replace PhotoKit Sharpener because it's still not resolution dependent but it might still be a significant enhancement.
so, yes, I believe the upgrade is worth the price. I hope and trust that troubled areas of A2 have been rewritten from scratch and that further upgrades will be even more impressive. time will tell; hopefully not another 18 months though.
cheers,
Gregory

  • Value of upgrading WSS 3.0 To SharePoint Foundation?

We have a WSS 3.0 site which the primary purpose is for storing documents that are shared with external business partners who have AD accounts in our domain without them needing to have VPN and access to our file servers.  It is especially useful for
documents that are over mail size limits or are too sensitive to be sent over email.  Few other features of WSS are in use.
They simply open a browser and browse to the URL, and log in using account credentials on our domain which we have assigned to them.  From there they can download and upload documents.
Also, we use Office 2010, so we will not be able to use any of the features of SharePoint Foundation 2013 that are not compatible with Office versions below 2013.
Since WSS 3.0 has support until late 2017, is there any real value to upgrading to SharePount Foundation 2010 for this use case other than getting a modernized look and feel?
We could just wait until 2016 and upgrade to whatever version of SharePoint Foundation that comes out after 2013.

I believe in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" atttude. If what you have is working for your needs and your users are happy, upgrading may not make sense in your specific case.
My only concern is the upgrade path. As it stands today, to upgrade from WSS 3.0 to SharePoint Foundation 2013 using out of the box methods, you need to first upgrade to SharePoint Foundation 2010 (in-place or database attach) and then again upgrade to SharePoint
    2013 (database attach only).
Let's say a new version of SharePoint Foundation comes out sometime between now and before support for WSS 3.0 ends. I would expect the upgrade path to be the same as I just outlined above, along with another step to upgrade from 2013 to vNext.
Whether you upgrade now or upgrade later you'll still need to go through the same process. I suppose what really matters is when you want to upgrade.
As always the third-party community will likely have solutions to migrate directly when vNext launches. :)

  • Numbers do not accept negative values after upgrading to Snow Leopard

I have iWork 9 installed in Leopard, and after upgrading to Snow Leopard, Numbers don't accept negative values, e.g. -141. They are defined as text and are aligned left in the cell, even if the cell is defined for numbers. Positive values are defined as numbers and aligned right.
All my statistics are wrong now. I don't where to find a sollution. Need to fix this asap.

I may guarantee that the cell contains a standard minus symbol.
I entered in the Index.xml to see if something was odd.
    All is perfect.
I can't imagine that the OP replaced deliberately a wrong char by a correct one before sending the file to my mailbox.
    And I repeat,
    (1) in the file which I received, the cell was really treated as a text one.
    (2) on my machine, on the OP's alternate machine, on the OP's alternate user account, resetting the cell's status to numbers apply well.
So, if a third party component is the culprit, it would be easy to identify: it must be in one of the user account able to receive third party items which means
    <userAccount>:Applications
    <userAccount>:Library:Address Book Plug-Ins
    <userAccount>:Library:Fonts
    <userAccount>:Library:Contextual Menu Items
    <userAccount>:Library:LaunchAgents
    <userAccount>:Library:PreferencesPanes
    <userAccount>:Library:Scripting Additions
    <userAccount>:Library:Services
    <userAccount>:Library:Widgets
But from my point of view it would be more efficient to try to search a culprit in the
    <userAccount>:Library:Caches folder.
An efficient tip would be to compress every subfolder of this folder as a .zip file and trash the original file.
Reboot so that the account restarts without the caches.
If th account continue to fail, my idea was bad.
If it behaves well, the culprit was one of the caches.
unpack them one by one so you will get the wrongdoer.

  • ORA-28267: Invalid NameSpace Value after upgrade to 11.1.1.5

    Hi Guys,
So after we upgraded to 11.1.1.5 to fix an issue which effected 6 out of our 350 source tables in interfaces, we've hit a problem now which is effecting all 350 interfaces.
We are using a dblink from our 11.2.0.2 DWH to a 10.2.0.2 source database. When ODI goes to load the target table (reading from a C$_ collection view with the db link in it) Im hitting ORA-28267: Invalid NameSpace.
A little digging suggests it might be down to the jdbc driver.
In my 11.1.1.3 install I see this :
    /oracledi/agent/drivers/ojdbc6.jar
in my 11.1.1.5 install I see this :
    oracledi/agent/drivers/ojdbc6dms.jar
I've tried the obvious of renaming the ojdbc6dms.jar to a backup and copying in the 11.1.1.3 driver ojdbc6.jar in in its place but I see no change (restarted agent)
Can anyone suggest anything ? Do I need to start messing with classpaths in odiparams.sh ?
I have logged an SR already, waiting to jump through the usual hoops before I start getting suggestions.
    Thanks in advance,
    Alastair

OK I swapped out 4 occurances of the driver :
    11gODI/modules/oracle.jdbc_11.1.1/ojdbc6dms.jar
    11gODI/odi_misc/ojdbc6dms.jar
    11gODI/oracledi/agent/drivers/ojdbc6dms.jar
    11gODI/oracledi/client/jdev/extensions/oracle.odi.navigator/lib/ojdbc6dms.jar
    with the ojdbc6.jar from the 11.1.1.3 install ( I got mine here : /oracledi/agent/drivers/ojdbc6.jar )
And it seems to be working fine now.

  • Value of upgraded RAM in imac 27" quad core

    Friends,
I have a 27" imac i7 quad core on order. I do a fair amount of editing in FCE and Aperture. Does anyone have any sense of whether there would be a noticeable difference in processing speed if I upgrade the RAM to 12gb, versus 8gb or 4gb? Are there any RAM benchmarks out there?
    Thanks!
    Steve

Well, yes, mixing & matching is fine, your system will run (of course, that assumes you have the correct kind of RAM ).
Mac memory architecture supports dual-channel memory access. Depending on the model (G5, Intel Core/Core2 Duo/Quad Core), it uses 64-bit data paths or 128-bit paths. If the DIMMS are matched, you get the benefit of the maximum speed of dual-channel access. If the DIMMS are not matched the system has to revert to asymmetric mode, which is slower. How much slower depends on all sorts of things.
Understand, that's not a complete technical explanation, but it hopefully makes the essential point. More RAM trumps matched DIMMS. However, you made a significant investment in your Core i7 iMac, if you're going to add RAM, why not buy matched DIMMS?

  • Why does iOS application keychain values are deleted after upgrade?

During upgrade testing for my iPad app, I noticed that if I install a newer version (using XCode) on my app-store-installed version, then keychain values I saved prior to the upgrade are not retrieved as expected - they return empty. I tried to check if this is related to the way I installed the app (app store/xcode/testflight) and experienced the same behavior when upgrading versions using only testFlight (testFlight version -> testFlgiht version).
Is this scenario reasonable? How can I make sure I will keep my keychain values between upgrades on the app store?
    Thanks, Ori

    Hi Melaniefromnorth saanich,
Take a look at the Photos User Manual below.  Is it possible you were deleting photos from an album and not from your library?
Delete photos and video - Photos Help
    https://help.apple.com/photos/mac/1.0/index.html#/pht3bfab2f96
    Delete photos and videos
    Do one of the following:
Delete a photo from an album, but not from your library: Select the items you want to delete, then press Delete.
Delete a photo from a moment (placing it in the Recently Deleted album): Select the items you want to delete, press Delete, then click Delete.
Delete a photo from a moment or album (placing it in the Recently Deleted album): Select the items you want to delete, then press Command-Delete.
Deleted photos and video aren’t immediately removed from your library; they’re placed in the Recently Deleted album, where they remain for the number of days shown, and then are deleted. You can recover the items before that period of time (see the next task). If you have iCloud Photo Library turned on, the photos may remain in iCloud up to 40 days and then are removed from all your devices that use iCloud Photo Library. If you’re not using iCloud Photo Library, your deleted photos are removed from your Mac only.
    Restore recently deleted items
Deleted items remain in the Recently Deleted album for the number of days shown, and then are deleted permanently. You can view recently deleted items and restore them back into your Photos library.
Choose File > Show Recently Deleted.
Select the photos you want to restore.
    Click Recover.
To delete recently deleted items immediately, select the items, then click Delete.
If you use Time Machine to back up your computer, you may be able to recover items after they are deleted permanently from your Mac or iCloud.
For more information on using Time Machine, see Restore a Photos library from a Time Machine backup.
    Hope that helps,

  • No Standalone Upgrade Pathway For CS6 Apps

As many of you who are regular in the forums know, I am a supporter and early adopter of Creative Cloud.
However as few you are ready to admit, I'm not a blind sheep drinking the red Adobe Koolaid...
There are in fact glaring flaws in Adobe Creative Cloud, both in terms of the business model and some the Applications methods.
One of these is the overall upgrade pathway which has changed dramatically...
On top of limiting the Upgrade Pathway to 2 versions back (CS5 and 5.5), Standalone products have been elimintated from the upgrade pathway.
As many of you know the standalone upgrade pathway has been a beneift Adobe has provided since CS was first introduced over 10 years ago.
Now only Bundle users of these previouis versions can upgrade. Anyone else has to buy new Bundles outright meaning that their older standalone license provides no addtional value or upgrade opportunity/savings as it had in the past.
I pesronally don't understand this from a business point of view as announcing this change and allowing 6 months before closing the standalone upgrade would have been financially beneficial. See unlike most people who are complaining about Creative Cloud subscription model, I don't believe Adobe is doing it to "rake in the cash" or because its a "scam".
If that were true, announcing the upgrade pathway for Standalone products would be ending and putting a countdown clock would have made them huge revenue as I anticipate the following would have taken place:
Standalone users of Products like InDesign, Illustrator, After Effects and Flash, would have upgraded to Design Standard, Design Premium, Production Premium or Web Premium to get the most out of their Standalone product in terms of savings without moving to Creative Cloud, and to be able to leverage those other products without moving from the box model if they plan to expand their business in the future.
Studios and Agencies with older individual boxed products would have upgraded to take advantage of savings and still be able to stay out of Creative Cloud.
Freelancers using any one of the three "Trinity Products" (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) would have upgrade for the $500 difference as this is less than a year of Creative Cloud and would allow them to keep a box product if they plan expanding their services within the scope of the Trinity.
While I don't appreciate this as I was looking at getting some value and savings out of some old standalone products I have on various machines throughout the years, it tells me for certain that there is more to this than money (which I realized early and have been trying to point out).
It may be a STRONG ARM and forceful tactic, but Adobe is trying to move as many people as possible on to a SINGLE CODE BASE and they anticipate they will be able to do it within 3-5 years using their current aggressive strategy.
Why some of you may not care, those of you who are either into technology, do alot of collaboration or are intruiged by some Adobe's business decisions will want to read on about what I'm seeing here.
Those of you who have ever had to manage a large website without the benefit of a CMS know that when you have to update something "minor" it can have major implecations. Especially if certain indivual pages or functionality were "inherited" from how someone else coded the site before you and changing too many things to be more efficient would require a complete tear down and overall. Adobe CC was that tear down and overall as they scrapped much of the legacy code that was still around in CS6 (which also had huge coding overhauls). For example, there was a lot of junk code in the Mac version of InDesign even in CS6 and they upgraded that product to a 64bit version, which is a huge deal when you are doing 1000 page technical manuals in InDesign...
Now imagine that you have to manage maintaining for all OS versions for the forseeable future all 12 of the main Applications in versions CS3- CS6 and CC that is over 70 Applications to maintain the codebase for. Imagine being told you have to maintain that many websites, all with their own indiviudal logic, quirks and standards with huge gaps of inconsistency in between.
Now imagine you could make the decision to only have to maintain 24 and eventually just 12...
Now if your in video production or print production, imagine you never have to export or package your files to accomodate for the fact you and someone else may be on a different Adobe version.
Now you can see why these tactics are being enforced even though in the short term they actually cost Adobe money and potentially even customers. Its a long end game based in the logistics of support, management and reallocating those resources to moving forward and eventually only ever building around a singular code base. Instead of Adobe dividing resources and attention across the legacy products everything will laser focused on maintaining what I refer to as "Adobe Solid (CS6-CC)" vs "Adobe Legacy (CS1-CS5.5)". Even just supporting "Modern Adobe (CS3-CS5.5)" would be (and has been) very labor intensive.
Microsoft made a similar attempt to reduce their burden by abandoning support of all Windows versions prior to Vista.
When you detach from the emotional sense of shock, betrayal or what have you and put yourself in the position of making a productivity based decision that reduces your own overhead and cost, its hard not understand where Adobe is coming from here. In their situation I think most of us would make the same choices. Companies who make decisions based on customer reactions, shock value etc. instead of figuring out what is and is not sustainable.
Also if you look at the long term in 3-5 years most Adobe users will be on either CS6 or CC. Eventually Adobe will not support CS6 on new operating systems which means 5-8 years from now we can expect the majority of Adobe users will be on Creative Cloud, consolidating the ecosystem ( a very Apple like idea actually). Eliminating several problems in terms of compatibility within the Creative Services Industry and reducing Adobe's burden in managing Adobe Legacy and thus internal cost, which will ideally translate eventually to reduced cost to customers or added value to the Creative Cloud product library.
I can be optimistic in this way because of Adobe's track record in adding value and services, discounts etc in the past, and the fact they have not raised rates. Since CS was introduced over 10 years ago if anything the rates have gotten cheaper even while the software continues to improve. For all of what Photoshop did for the price 10 years ago, the price today is the same and its is so much more than a mere image editing progam, now capable of Video, Animation/Motion Graphics, 3D modeling, Some Web Design, it really is the swiss army knife  of the Creative Services Industry.
So am I annoyed at the Upgrade pathway being narrowed down to nothing. Absolutely. Do I think it was done purely for greed. No. It doesn't make sense, I would literally be trying to give me money and they are not giving me a way to do it, because they aggressively are on a path that is about a larger goal than taking that money from me today. Do I feel alienated, yes on the surface. Do I still understand and support the decision, Absolutely.
When something is the right choice, its the right choice, regardless of whether it is right for you. I can't argue with practicallity even when I'm screwed by it, so all I can do is try to be on the right side of it, and get over it when I'm not. It's not something I recommend taking personally.
There were people who couldn't appreciate this when the transition from film to digital was taking place. Where are they now. The times they are a changing.

I have to respectfully disagree with you.... Adobe has changed to a company all about profit. For me profit is not a dirty word. we all need it to stay in business...
However... I purchased my CS6 collection completely online... I can update it when I choose... and I own it... last year we had the choice to own or rent..
I chose to own.... I dont begrudge the renters I merely want choice...  Adobe removed choice because it realized it could turn us into digital addicts... stop renting
and yes your files dont vanish but you cant use them... .... dont confuse software evolution with monopolisation and Digital Racketeering. ..Adobe made almost a Billion
dollar NET profit last year...I think they deserved it... but gouging users is not the way to go....
The answer I normally get here is well stay on CS6... and I will..... the out pouring of hate with the cloud is because so many users actually love adobe products.. I know
I do... There will be a gap in the market for about two years as other companies replace Adobes products... but it will happen.. I like many others will wait it out...
For me the ones I feel sorry for are Adobe employees who are left with the fallout of this horrendous decisicion... I salute you from afar....

  • Expiration date not displaying after upgrade from 2007 to 2013

I recently upgraded from MOSS 2007 to 2013.  I have information management set up on a library of InfoPath forms.  For the forms that were created prior to the upgrade, the expiration date is displaying and actually get updated if I modify them.
But none of my forms that have been created after the upgrade, are displaying when the expiration date is, which should be one year from modify date.  If I modify the forms created prior to the upgrade, they reflect the new, update date.
Are these new forms not getting the policy applied to them, and why not?  I am not sure why the older forms are getting updated, but not my new ones.
    Denise E.

    Hi Denise,
According to your description, my understanding is that the Expiration date column was not displaying values after upgrading from SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2013.
Per my knowledge, we can only use the date column which is added to the library or list or the Declared Recorded date to set the retention policy, so if the Expiration date is used in the retention policy then the Expiration date should be a column in the
    library or list.
I recommend to check the retention policy in the library and see which column is used in the retention policy as the image below shows:
After that, go to the Library settings to find this column.
Could you please provide screenshots of the retention policy and the columns in the Library settings page?
    Best regards.
    Thanks

  • With older imacs, is there a point when you SHOULDN'T upgrade to latest OS?

I may have worded that poorly but basically what I'm after is this: I know Apple lists the compatible Macs going back X number of years with each OS update, but is there a point where one is better off staying put with say Mountain Lion on iMac 21.5 Late 2009 (12GB RAM) vs. updating to Mavericks and eventually Yosemite.  Obviously, the newer the machine the better apt it is to take advantage of the newer OS, however will taking on latest OS actually slow down an old Mac?  Is this making any sense?

I disagree. My 2009 MacBook ran Mavericks very well. Better, gasp, than Snow Leopard.
Mavericks is designed to be more efficient than previous OSes and should run well on the hardware that Apple says will support it.
If you're alrady running Mavericks, I wouldn't downgrade. As you guess, you'll have problems with existing apps you've installed that may not work with 10.6. Not to mention the lack of security updates. You'll be exposing yourself to all sorts of known vulnerabilities by downgrading.
Stay are you are. You might not see the value in upgrading to Yosemite, but I wouldn't backtrack now.

  • Upgrade to OWB 10.2.0.2 - worth it?

Has anyone put in this upgrade? I had an open SR due to the issue that I could not perform very many diminsion role attachements to a cube without the product entering an infinite loop and effectively hanging the client. Metalink said that this patch would correct that, but I saw nothing in the documentation to indicate such. This is a rather large upgrade and I am not anxious to install it without specific knowledge that this will fix my problem. Also, the OWB patch before that, correcting null comparison on triggering dimension columns has caused my dimension maps for Type 2 dimensions to run almost 3 times longer than before. (Thanks Oracle).

We upgrade to get round bug 5263515 (TYPE II DIMENSION TRIGGER ATTRIBUTE ISSUE WITH NULL VALUE)
The upgrade was technically simple, however it corrupted all of our dimension objects. We ended up in a position where any map that used a dimension wouldn't validate.
We've a TAR open with support, but so far the only solution we've found is to re-create the dimension objects from scratch.
My advise would be to make sure you implement this patch in a test environment first.

  • Why Upgrade to iPhoto 6?

Earlier this year I briefly used iPhoto 3 (or what ever came with Panther) and was disappointed in its editing capabilities compared to even the basic CAMEDIA Master. Now I have Tiger and iPhoto 4. iPhoto 4 is an improvement over its predessor, but still is weak in editing. I'm comparing it along with PhotoImpressions 5 and CAMEDIA Master 4. I also use GraphicConverter, but it is in a different league than the others and I use it for special projects and to deal with opening and saving in a variety of formats.
Anyway, while CAMEDIA Master is the best for quick editing of that bunch, it is clunky to use compared to iPhoto. So, I like the iPhoto interface, but Version 4 just doesn't do the job. Would iPhoto 6 be substantially better than iPhoto 4?
Please provide commentary regarding the value of upgrading to iPhoto 6 from iPhoto 4, particularly with regard to editing.
I've noticed that most photo applications have become obsessed with organizing and burning, save Graphic Converter, and seem to have missed the important first step of editing photos for final presentation.
    Thanks in advance.
    Carl B.

    Carl
I've noticed that most photo applications have become obsessed with organizing and burning, save Graphic Converter, and seem to have missed the important first step of editing photos for final presentation.
iPhoto is 'obesessed with organizing' because it's a photo organiser. First and foremost iPhoto is a database, with version control and no more than lightweight editing. It's not intended as a competitor for GC or Photoshop, but as a complement to them. In fact if you look at the iPhoto product page
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/iphoto/
You'll notice that they are not especially trying to sell it on editing, but on organisation and sharing.
Remember, you can use GC as an external editor - just set it up in the preferences. Then when you go to edit a pic, it will be passed to GC, make your changes and your save will be saved into iPhoto.
So, don't buy v6 for the editing, yes it's a step up on v4, it does things better, but if you buy v6 buy it for the organisation and the speed.
It's been a long time since I used v4, and I'm not exactly sure of what features came in with what version, but here goes:
v6 is significantly faster than earlier versions, plus the library now holds up to 250,000 images. The limited editing tools are based on presets rather than user control - but there is some measure of control possible - and editing in fullscreen is very easy on the eye. So if you're cropping, fixing red-eye iPhoto is very easy to use. There's the enhance tool which can sharpen things quite a bit - or too much. And there are preset effects like Sepia. The good thing is that these are easy to apply and undo if you don't like them.
But like I say, don't buy it for editing, especially if you are used to using GC or PS or PS Elements. But it for the organisation and sharing features.
    My .2 cents

  • ADVANTAGES FOR UPGRADING SNOW LEOPARD MOUNTAIN LION

I have a late 2010 Mac book Pro 13"  2.26 GHz  4 GB and I upgraded to Lion when it came out but I reverted back to Snow Leopard, my main use for my Mac is music I'm using Native Instruments Traktor Pro 2 software with the Traktor S4 controller hardware to continue upgrading my Traktor software I need upgrade to Mountain Lion, the Traktor software upgrades are not critical right now. Will there be problems skipping the Lion upgrade, I'm debating if there's any value to upgrade when everything is working fine. There seems to be a divided consensus for the Mountain Lion upgrade.

A simple suggestion, get yourself an external Firewire
HD (USB will be to slow), clone your current SL installation
to it, spend the $19.99 and install on that drive.  Use it
for a while and if you are happy, clone the install back to
the internal drive.  If not happy, wipe the external drive
and you have an additional backup or data drive (can never
    have too many backups).

  • If I upgrade to an ipone 5s do I recieve $300 off ipad?

If I upgrade to an iphone 5s do I receive $300 off ipad?

Ah! Thanks for the additional details TomCat03, that helps. To clarify any confusion, the post asks about a scenario with an upgrade to an iPhone 5S. This purchase, in addition to the iPad purchase, qualifies for the current promo of $200 off the iPad. However, you are correct about the trade-in value. If there is an older model iPhone being traded in, customers would receive the normal trade-in value not the promotional trade in value for upgrading to the iPhone 6.
