Vanished Files....still on HD somewhere!?

Ok, this is kind of weird.
I have misplaced some downloaded files. Apparently they exist somewhere, because my movie player can still play them, but I can't find them, anywhere. Some are quite large and I'd like to delete them. I've done searches for their titles, by kind, by size, etc. but nada.
I checked the folder where they're supposedly downloaded to, but again, nothing.
The "recent files" list in VLC player says they're on my external hard drive, but I just played one by selecting it from the "recent files" menu and I am not connected to my external HD!
Anyone else experience this extremely annoying happening?

Ahh, Niel's solution is a good one but I agree with Tom that if Spotlight is not helping you find files that you know are somewhere on your machine, it's not doing a very good job as a search utility. (Sad to think about what one is to conclude when SL fails to find files that are maybe on your machine - what do you do then?)
The real solution here is that if you really have to find something or really have to know whether it's on your machine or not, abandon Spotlight altogether and use the freeware utility EasyFind, which is available on Versiontracker.com. It's slower than Spotlight but it does not rely on an index and therefore is far more reliable.

  • I have a song on my ipod touch I can't get rid of. Even if I uncheck the artist and re-sync the file still is showing. It has a weird circle with a stop icon next to the file.

    I also tried to manually manage the music files and removed them all from my ipod. But the file still remains. It only is appearing on my ipod touch, it does not show in itunes. And when I add the file that shows in itunes, it shows up twice. One is normal and the other has that stop button icon next to it. Please help.

    You should really read the manual.
    "How do you restore from backup? "
    Restore.  When given the choice, choose to use backup.
    "And how can I check to see if the pics and videos are on my computer somewhere first??"
    They would only be where you put them.  What program did you use to import them?  Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all.  You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
    If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer.

  • Does anybody know if you uninstall iTunes (mine is giving me an error message) and then re-install, will my music still be there (somewhere?)  I don't have it saved to the cloud, but it is on my iPad.

    Does anybody know if you uninstall iTunes (mine is giving me an error message) and then re-install, will my music still be there (somewhere?)  I don't have it saved to the cloud, but it is on my iPad  I recently upgraded my iTunes account and now I can't open it.  I get an error message and it says I need to re-install.

    Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
    Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
    Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
    The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

  • Dynamic link in Encore to get AE project, bluray, after transcoding, file still shows untranscoded

    Hi,
    I have an After Effects file. I have several comps that are 1920x1080 at 29.97 drop frame. When I go to Encore, I use, Import After Effects Composition and import several compositions from my AE project. I've tried using both Automatic transcode settings and I've tried to set the settings myself. When I transcode, Encore goes through the motions, but when it's done, the file still shows "Untranscoded". I have checked the project folder and confirmed that the transcoded files are indeed there, but Encore still shows them as untranscoded. What is going on?
    Thanks,
    Stan

    Hi,
    Transcod your comp in AME. Choose H.264 Blu-Ray if you have more than 2 hours videos.

    After upgrading to ios6 my iphone will not open .xls files in emails with the default viewer. Is there a fix for this? The same emailed .xls files still open on my ipad using ios5 while viewing email like they did on my iphone prior to upgrading. I have no special software like numbers or anything else installed on either device. Just using the default viewer provided by apple for viewing email.

    The attachment is an .xls excel 97-2003 spreadsheet. I viewed the file in the email and did not edit it with any software. I can forward the file to anyone that is may want to check it out to see if they can help me. I was wondering if there was some way of forcing another ios6 install on my phone and maybe that would solve it.
    Is there anyone out there that is viewing .xls files in email using ios6 w/o any other software installed like numbers or any other add ons? I am not upgrading my ipad from ios5 to ios6 so I can still continue to view the emails on my ipad. Is there an email viewer .xls plug-in that will be availablle in the next ios6 update?

  • Deleted files still showing/opening in MS Excel

    Hi
    I have 6 files in MS excel that were deleted from my docs in finder and I did secure empty of the trash.  However, the files still appear and can be opened in excel. I tried searching for them by file name but can't seem to locate where excel is hiding them on my MacBook Air. I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8.3 and Microsoft Office for Mac 2011.
    Any Suggestions?
    Thanks

    Red Dwarf - Thanks for the reply, the files were not in emails and i was not able to get the yellow box but you gave me another idea. I added a footer to the document with the path name to see where it was and discovered that it was saving it as a template.  So after more searching I was able to find a solution on an office support page which I have shared below.  Thanks
    In the Finder, open /Users/ username/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/My Templates.
    NOTE   If you are using Mac OS X 7 (Lion), the Library folder is hidden by default. To show the Library folder, in the Finder, click the Go menu, and then hold down OPTION .
    Drag the templates that you want to delete to the Trash.

    Usually I click burn Blu ray in Final Cut’s share feature and I run it all the way through to create disc.

    What would be the best recommended way to do this and keep the menu intact and what would they need to burn the Blu Ray disk, they have Final Cut Studio as well.

    I would imagine so, but I've never done so I'm not sure. You have a blu-ray burner right? Try it out. make an image and then try to burn it.

    Michael,
    I read Ed's thread and I understand about the timing of the Full (Incr Lvl 0) and the incrementals.
    In my case I'm not doing any incrementals (Incr Lvl 1) of the database, just Incr Lvl 0 every day. I do the archivelog backups during the day to keep the /arch mount point under control.
    So, if I have Incremental Level 0 backups on the 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, ..... With an 8 day recovery window I shouldn't need the ones from the 19th or 20th at a minimum and possibly the 21st depending on when the math is done. Right?
    Am I missing something?
    *************** NEWS FLASH ******************
    Whoops!!! Egg on my face! I just checked back in my email logs of the backups and now recall there were some disk space issues around that time that caused the backups to fail and it just so happens that the backups on the 20th, 21st and 22nd all failed.
    I should learn to trust RMAN more. It is obviously smarter than me!! :-)
    Sorry for the red flags. I'll do my homework more completely next time.
    Not a problem. We've all been there, done that.
    I can't tell you how many times I've been stuck on something, run out of ideas on my own research and thrown a question to the forum, and no sooner to I hit the 'send' button that a light goes on and I quickly get my own answer.
    At least I understand the recovery window scenario better.

  • Managed Files still attached to deleted bundle

    I have some files that were part of a File Bundle I have deleted. Unfortunately the files still appear under Tools, FileList and appear to still think they are in the bundle I deleted. They do not appear when I search for Orphaned Managed Files and as a result I am unable to delete them via the ZLM Web GUI
    When I go into the files and click on the hyper link to the bundle it thinks its a member off I get the standard ZCC has encountered an error with a java stack message. I expected this because the bundle has been deleted. Can anyone tell me a way to delete these files from my ZLM server

    Dave,
    here are the steps to remove the bundle reference for that file. You need to run a few SQL statements against the database:
    Code:
    # psql -U zenadmin zenworks
    zenworks=# select fileid from unix_file where filename='<your filename>';
    fileid = 91668
    zenworks=# select bndlfileid, bndlid from bundle_file where fileid='<your fileid>';
    bndlfileid = 91669
    bndlid = 91666
    zenworks=# delete from bundle_file_ostarget where bndlfile_id='<your bndlfileid>';
    zenworks=# delete from bundle_file where bndlid='<your bndlid>';
    zenworks=# delete from zen_bundle where bndlid='<your bndlid>';
    zenworks=# \q
    After that you should be back at the shell prompt and best would be to restart the zlm services. If there is something in cache about that file bundle, that should be gone after the restart.
    After the restart check in the ZCC if this file is still assigned with a file bundle. On my ZLM 7.3 IR1 system (IR2 is the latest version) there seems to be a bug that I cannot delete a orphaned file from the ZCC / Tools / File List. If I select the file, the delte option does not get available to really delete it. It can be done via the database commands as well, but I would like to use the ZCC for that job. So check if you see the same when the bundle assignment of the file is gone. And please take care with the SQL commands that you do not delete anything different. Novell does not want the customer to manipulate the database.

    I have a problem when the large file copy from the laptop to the external USB HDD or NAS (via CIFS share). When the copy is disrupted (either the network is down or the power outrage to my external HDD), the file still exist in the folder but cannot be
    read or open. The corrupted file is still showing full size of the file. How can I avoid this?

    Hi,
    If you copy large files from the laptop to the external USB HDD or NAS, when the copy is disrupted, the files could be corrupted and we unable to read the file's contents. In general, your need to delete the file and copy the file again.
    In additional, you could try to use diskpart to repair the disk to recover the files.
