Vantec iceberg cooler

has anyone put a vantec iceberg cooler (or others) on their northbridge?
if so what kind of cooling improvement did you see?
im thinkin about putting an active cooling solution on my northbridge
thanks for responses

You don't actually "see" any temperature benefits, as AFAIK, there is no sensor on the NB (and even if there was, it would probably be wrong  )
I put one on mine more for peace of mind than anything else.

  • Better?? Stock chipset cooler or Vantec IceBerg on Neo 2 Plat

In your experience as I am hoping not to have to remove my mobo to try this and find out my stock msi chipset cooler cools better than my vantec iceberg.
What do you ppl think is a better cooler??

Yeah I know it will fit and is just marginally larger.  I test fitted it when I first got the mobo from newegg.  And its not like its alot of trouble getting the mobo out of the case.  I am just lazy.  All I do all day long is work on other ppls computers.  I kinda like just coming home and having a computer that works.  But lately my computer room has been getting warmer and if I restart my computer I will get bsod's in x64 v1433 with error "Page fault in non paged area"  And I go into bios and the chipset temp is 42'C  To me that is just way to hot.  I have pleny of cooling inside the case and ie; 6 80mm fans and a Arctic Cooling freezer 64 on the 3200+.  But I am wondering if maybe it is due to memory overheating.
I did just take my memory down from 2.85v to 2.55 and it works just fine.  So maybe that is my trick.
Also I did remove the stock hs and put some as5 under it and that lowered my temps by about 2'C

  • Vantec Iceberg / K7N2 Delta-ILSR

Has Anybody replaced the K7N2 Delta-ILSR stock
heatsink and fan with a Vantec Iceberg Ifso
whats it like and did it fit ok ?
I originally got the Vantec just for the fan
to replace the stock one like twistedbrowntucker
    and others have done .....
    System Fan Replacement (MS-6570)
It's so well made and a hefty piece of copper
that im now considering doing a direct swap to
the Vantec but i dont want the hassle of removing
the motherboard if im going to have problems
    Thanks
    Toolz

Well i finally got my backside in gear and fitted it
The sprung posts on the stock heatsink fly when
you release them,I lost and found one 4 feet
    away from the case ...
It's silent so no more lifting the cover every few
weeks to shut it up with a drop of oil like the
    stock fan i hope..
I was a little disappointed at the Vantec fan only
being two wires without a fan speed sensor but
the quality of build and the silence make up for
    it ........

  • Northbridge cooler options for K7N2G-L

I was considering if I should replace the stock passive solution on my K7N2G-L northbridge with something active. I don't currently use the onboard video, but will when I get my second system back together. It looks like a Chrome Orb or Vantec Iceberg are the only real options I can find. Are they any better than stock? I can't find anything useful about IGP cooling solutions in google.com. Is there a better cooling solution out there? Or should I leave well enough alone?

I put a 40mm Sunon 6800 rpm fan on the Heatsink of theK7N2-L a few weeks ago and it works very well. The hardest thing I found to complete the projest was finding screws that would take a bite of the NB heatsink fins. I hadn't suffered any instability issues but had noticed that the NB sink was noticably warm to the touch with my FSB set at 200 so I thouhgt what the heck, the fan was just laying around collecting dust anyhow so I slapped it on.

  • Northbridge cooler for Neo Plat (ver 1)

Freaking MSI has put Northbridge too close to AGP port. My Leadtek 5900U is too thick and I am very limited with the choice of active coolers for northbridge. I use vantec iceberg (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-110-103&depa=0) but it bearly fits under the video card and the air flow is not the best there.
    Does anyone have other solutions?

Also, when I took Vantec off to send my mobo RMA, I found out that the vantec would only (seemly) touch the sides of the chip like an issue here:

  • PLEASE help me squeeze the price of this build!!

    Hi everyone-
I have been working on a new computer build with heavy CS5 usage in mind, particularly After Effects and Premiere.  I have regular access to free cameras and gear, and I need an editing machine to facilitate a few personal projects  This machine will be the kernel of a home studio, but will also be used for more ordinary internet / bill-paying types of work as well.
The help I need from you:
The price on my build right now is $3,956.00.    Yikes!!  I need help squeezing the total pricetag of this rig to a more manageable number, hopefully under $3,000.  However, I know that I am purchasing literally everything in the system brand new, including things like monitors, speakers, the keyboard, etc, so my pricetag will be a bit higher than most builders in this forum.
As you'll see, I just mostly went on Newegg and selected the highest-rated component that was in a comfortable price range for me.  I'm pretty sure that everything in my list will be able to play together nicely, but if there are ways that I can take steps down in price without affecting the quality of the system too drastically, those are the changes I want to know about.
TO SUM UP:  After reading this forum for awhile, I've put together the computer I think I WANT.  But I barely know what I'm doing with this stuff!  Can you help me build the computer I NEED?

A little about me /my needs and usage:
I went to film school.  I'm not an editor per se, but I did a number of experimental compositing and animation projects, things that I'd like to resurrect, polish up, and put in my reel.  I also plan to use this machine to digest projects that are not yet shot.  With this machine, I'll be making the switch from Apple systems to PC.
Formats I'd like to be working with in the future:
    -Sony SxS cards (XDCAM EX)
-Many flavors of DV video (DVCPROHD, DV, AVCHD, HDV)
    -HDSLR footage (native H.264-based streams)
    -Maybe RED footage?
I've never built a computer by myself before, but I have friends that have, who can help me.  The components I've selected for this build were based mostly on advice I'd read in this forum, particularly Haarm's many guides for newbies like me
I do NOT need to be the fastest kid on the block, but I do want to build a reliable system the RIGHT WAY.  I don't want to be cheap about cooling.  For the HDD system, I want optimized data throughput that is structured in a sensible way.
Many thanks in advance to anyone who bothers to read even 1/2 of all that stuff, let alone anyone who makes helpful suggestions on how I can bring down the price of this system.
    Talk soon!!
    -Leo K

Thanks to everyone for their helpful advice.  I've taken all of it into account, and I was able to shave almost $700 off of the price of my build!

It's barely a step up from what you're using now...here is a review on it:
    http://www.neoseeker.com/resourcelink.html?rlid=62172
This pic shows that the 12V rail is 18A which is 2A more than the one you have now...scrimping isn't going to make it better...
Enermax or Antec is the way to go...they both crank a lot more amps out of their rails than most...

  • Uneven Sli Temperatures

Uneven to say the least, Gpu No1 rises in temperature only slightly, perhaps 10c when under load from at rest of about 38c but Gpu No2 rises to 90c+ very rapidly and would I'm sure top 100c after a few minutes.
Screen grab of the NVidea Monitor.
The temperatures are displayed with a 14c gradient between levels
Up untill recently was running stock cooler on No2 with what seems a very effective "Ice Chameleon" on No1 - Identical as far as I can tell to the Vantec Iceberg 5 and the Evercool Nighthawk VC F117 Vga Cooler which I now have on the No2; which made no difference to the temperature curve whatsoever.
I will try changing the cards over and then the coolers to see if I can make some sense of this if I get time tomorrow. I don't know how long Iv'e had these problems as I have only recently been taking any notice of temperatures with the new NVidea control panel and now with NTune installed also.
Thanks in advance for your superior insight.

The case is very well ventilated with two additional 90mm fans - one blowing over the graphics cards and one extracting through the hard drives.
Only other thing I can think of - Sisoft sandra told me that I need to update the video bios!? as its dated Dec 04 (5.43.02.16.00).
The temperatures seem genuine in that when starting from cold both Gpu temps are low -30 - with both stabilizing at around 38 N01 and 46 - 48 No2. Although I find it hard to believe that tiny chip can heat up what must be a cubic inch of solid copper by 50c in a couple of seconds
I'm running the latest 93.71 drivers.

I'm really sorry but the Vantec Iceberg and the Silencer DON'T go together.
There is about 1.5mm !!! gap between the MSI chipset cooler and the "head" of the Silencer where the fan is situated.
I couldn't even put the smallers of fans between these 2.And i mean the smallest..You might even say i was lucky the Silencer fits!!!
    I have a 9800 Pro so i should know.
And to all those who say it fits, either you don't know and are guessing, or i challenge you to post a PIC with one installed.
And if that doesn't convince you, i will be forced to post a pic myself so you can show me your MAGIC.
And all that jus to keep poor folks from buyiing stuff they can't use, just from misinformation.

  • KT3 Ultra2 R Northbridge Fan Clarification

A couple of quick questions as regards my N/B fan which is going (stock MSI one).
I wanted to replace it and yes I understand the removal proceedure ie pinching the plastic pegs under mobo.
As regards installation of new N/B cooler/fan should I:
    1) clean the N/B with isopropyl alcohol (just like cpu)
    2) apply grease to the top of N/B chipset. I normally use artic ceramique to grease my cpu's is using that ok or should I be using something else.
    3) I was going to follow advise give by many threads on this forum and go for the
    Vantec Iceberg Copper
    http://www.overclock.co.uk/customer/product.php?productid=16537&cat=410
This is the right one to buy.
Lastly looks like the installation for the Vantec Iceberg is by way of pushing plastic pegs to secure it, is that correct  ie held in much the same way as the stock chipset cooler.
    Many thanks for your help

  • I know this has been asked before...

After about nine months, my Northbridge chipset fan has gone from simply noisy to an irritating vibration.  I know that the Zalman Fanmate 2 will slow it down to 5000 rpm, but it sounds like the fan is on its way out.  I'm reluctant to spray it with WD 40 because I don't want to remove the fan unless I'm going to replace it.  I did e-mail tech support at MSI and they probably will send me a new fan.  What are some other good aftermarket options?  I appreciate any advice that people can offer.  BTW, other than the fan, I've had no problems with the board, which is about as good as you can get without going to SLI.

Will it fit on the Neo-4 Platinum?  It seems to me that I have a few options here:
    (1)  Buy a Zalman Fanmate 2 and turn down the fan.  It used to run regularly at 7,670 RPM, but lately, it's running at 8,000 RPM+ and is rattling things.  Yet, Speedfan says the temp of the Northbridge is 17 or 18C, so it's not overheating.
    (2)  Buy a general four channel fan controller.  I like the Zalman that fits in the 3.5 bay, but my case has a plastic door that closes, so I may need one with just push buttons.  Any advice on that is appreciated.  The problem with that idea is that the back fan is a 120mm Antec Smartcool and the front is the Antec 120mm that came with the case set on medium.
    (3)  Buy a Vantec Iceberg copper heatsink and fan, some Arctic Silver 5 and the Arctic Silver clean kit, pull the motherboard out (next time I get the case with a removable motherboard tray) and install it.
    (4)  Buy this(http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=872908&CatId=99) or (http://www.quietpcusa.com/acb/showdetl.cfm?&DID=8&User_ID=760103&st=7443&st2=-49144413&st3=35057438&Product_ID=91&CATID=5), cut some pins off with my Dremel Moto-Tool and install.
    (5)  Buy this (http://www.quietpcusa.com/acb/showdetl.cfm?&DID=8&User_ID=760103&st=7443&st2=-49144413&st3=35057438&Product_ID=359&CATID=5), cut some pins off--probably still won't fit though--and install.
My video card just clears the Northbridge but probably can be worked around.  Next to it I put an Antec blue LED cyclone blower to help keep the card, and the system, cool.  On high, it's still not that loud.  Even with two 120mm Antec fans, the system still hits 41C during gaming.  Thanks for the advice so far guys.

  • Boot Failure Issues

Thanks for any help that may come of this question. I'm not very fluent in the technical nitt gritty of computer hardware/software, but I've been using computers for years and I catch on quick. This goes for the "boot" problem I am getting.
My sytem crashed the other day after the northbridge cooling fan failed. I just finished replacing my northbridge cooling fan with a Vantec Iceberg and I tried to start up the computer. I did have to partially remove the motherboard to do this, so I had to disconnect several cables include the hard drive. I do believe, however, that all cbale s have been properly reconnected. When I power up, I see the color MSI logo pop up, it then appears to start "booting up", or whatever the next process is called. In doing so it gets to a point where it says:
    Client Mac Add 00 0C 7615 4C E6
    No Boot filename received
Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter
Not knowing what to do, I found a floppy MSI Bios Update Disk that I had made at some point and inserted this ( a mistake perhaps?) It flashed the bios, finished its work, and the problem still persisted. At one point I was able to get into a screen that appeared to show a boot order, and it had the CD ROM, another drive (forget which one), and LAN. But I did not see the hard drive listed. Am I correct in assuming that the issue is that the motherboard is trying to boot up the sytem, which it would normally do from the hard drive, however it cannot locate it?
I have started the process of searching these forums, and I found one that seemed to have the same issue but I had a little trouble understanding what they were getting at. Any help that can be offered would be greatly appreciated.

BOS, thanks for the help. The corrective action wasn't quite what you outlined, so hopefully you'll read this and just confirm that my actions were okay. I entered into a screen (forgot how I got there, F8?) that dealt with arrays. What is an arrary and what is the significance? One of the boot messages had mentioned that there was no array defined. So in this screen I defined the 1 array as my hard drive. And that was it. After that the system would load into windows? Was this a correct action to take? Because the BIOS had my HDD0 as the first boot source, but the error still persisted till I defined an array.
Also you asked me what the temp was. I don't know how to locate a temp specific to the northbridge chip. My PCAlert 4 shows a CPU temp of 50C and the system temp is 39C.
Also, in the manual for the motherboard, I noticed a FAQ that said you shouldn't connect a Vantec fan directly to motherboard because it draws to much power. So I connected right the PSU. This however, prevents PCAlert4 from being able to monitor its speed. Is this a problem? Is there a way around it?
Last thing, regarding my post to the fan thread, do you see a problem with the fan only set up on the chip?
Again, thanks for all the help.

yep thats other possiblities, for some reason your fastrack was lost array and need to be reconfigured. after seening the message: "No array defined" you should press "CTRL+F" to entire in a utility and to re-setuped like you already do. you have done correct.as boot priority HDD0 or SCSI.
"What is an arrary and what is the significance?"
SATA disk on your mainboard will be recognised only when its defined in array via Onboard Promise Controller.

you can use Everest to observe it: (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=100852.0) Example:

that is the correct way. no FAN RPM monitoring is not problem. you have done best.
"Last thing, regarding my post to the fan thread, do you see a problem with the fan only set up on the chip?

nope should be fine if NB temp remain acceptable, if temeperature is normal. but with other copper vantec base should be lowest. basicly if your NB temp is good/low there is nothink to worry.
    you are welcome mate.

  • Southbridge temps

I noticed that the southbridge gets pretty warm to the touch, and it's not heatsinked. I am considering modding a thermaltake videoram heatsink (leftover from the heatspreader kit), but am having trouble finding good double-sided sticky heat conductive tape. Anybody got a good supplier? (Remember, this tape has to hold when it gets warm as well!)
Tomorrow I am drilling a few holes to mount an intake fan to the front of my case, which will pretty much blow right across it, so I figure that it's not too mission critical to go without anyway. Plus, I can put the cover back on it then. (I already have an exhaust fan on the back, in addition to the power supply's.)
I'm just one of those guys that builds the safety in before the serious overclocking goes on. (When you edit and process video and audio, the gains from OC'ing are definitely worthwhile.)

vantec iceberg vga/northbridge cooling kit comes with a little heatsink for southbridge with 2 sided thermal tape.
also, staying with the building in safety before serious overclocking make sure to get rid of that retail hsf.
