/var/log/system.log - kernel[0]: FireWire GUID fffffffffeffffff is invalid!

Recently been seeing the following kernel messages within /var/log/syslog.log file however no FireWire devices are connected. There's been not impact on the system performance when FireWire davices(iPod 3G & 30Gb HD via FW enclosure) are connected and being used. Any ideas were these messages are coming from.

I'm having a hard time analyzing where this problem come from.
Immediately after upgrading to 10.4.11, I thought the messages had disappeared and my hard drive was finally working correctly. I mounted it correctly and transferred about 7GB with no problem at all.
However, some time later I connected the hard drive again and got a hard crash (finder, the applications freeze with no recovery => hard reboot). This was while the console was outputting the "Firewire GUID XXX is invalid!" message.
Hardware Test returns no error. Here is a sample log I got when connecting the drive, a while back:

At this point I think it might be a problem with the firewire hardware on my macbook, but I have no certainty...
Any ideas ? Shall I return my laptop to a repair center ?

  • ICal doesn't show delegation, and generates date and time error messages in /var/log/system.log

I have a problem with my iCal, when I use my caldav account, I can only see my own calendar on my MBA, on my co-workers MBP it works fine with both my account and his. My co-worker can't see other calendars than his own when he uses iCal on my laptop.
We can reproduce this problem on his computer by setting Location to Automatic rather than Amsterdam, then after deleting iCal's cache files, the caldav account and setting the Location back to Amsterdam solves the problem for him.
It does not solve the problem for me (or several other co-workers). We've been looking at this for a few weeks, and we can not find any clear pattern why certain machines have this problem and others don't.
All machines (both affected and unaffected) are running Mac OS 10.7.2 with iCal 5.0.1
I've spoken to Apple support over the phone (in the Netherlands), unfortunately, they couldn't help with this.
So far we've tried numerous location and language settings, but on affected machines nothing appears to solve the delegation problem (which we assume to be connected to the error messages iCal generates)

  • Console filling with "FireWire GUID 0000000000000000 is invalid!"

Hello all. I would appreciate any help I can get. I know just enough to be a danger to my system.
Im on my 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro. 4 GB mem, OSX 10.7.5. Software is up to date as of yesterday.
Here's the problem. When I wake machine up, within a minute it slows to a crawl, throwing beachballs all over. When it catches up to itself, it still runs slower than normal. Then I can hear the drive being written on, prompting me to check console.I get this message:
8/16/13 12:02:15.000 PM kernel: FireWire GUID 0000000000000000 is invalid!
It repeats every 5 seconds, never ending until a restart.
It DOESN'T happen all the time. VERY intermittent, and haven't been able to recreate it on purpose.
Today, I had an external drive plugged into the firewire 800 port. Normally, I do not.

I received this from Akitio/Thunder Dock Support
"Thank you for your feedback. We are aware of this problem and yes, it happens when the system comes out of sleep mode and the Thunder Dock is connected to your system. It does not affect the functionality of the product but it does tend to fill up the console with error messages.
Unfortunately, we cannot fix this with a simple firmware or driver update and you would have to return the product to us, so that we can replace it.
    Thanks for your help

  • In Console every 10 seconds: "FireWire GUID ffffffffffffffff is invalid!"

    Subject says it.
Any ideas on what this is all about?
    FireWire GUID ffffffffffffffff is invalid!

    Which Mac?
Have you tried resetting the FW bus?
Information on resetting the bus can be found in the 5 steps listed here.

  • "deny file-write-create"-errors in log system.log

    Hi,
since I upgraded Lion I got tons of these messages in my logs:

So this is just Preview adding this every 30 seconds to the logs. Similar errors occur, for example, when Spotlight indexes movies.
Does anyone have an idea what is causing this and how to fix it?
    Thanks,
    Stefan

    Mine looks like this:
    drwx------  251 stefan  staff     8534 27 Jul 15:29 ByHost
And the first few lines look like this:
    drwx------+ 763 stefan  staff    25942 27 Jul 15:41 .
    0: group:everyone deny delete
    drwx------@  60 stefan  staff     2040 25 Jul 09:27 ..
    0: group:everyone deny delete
But as I said in my initial post, such errors do not only appear for the ByHost folder. It happens for various preferences, for example, when Spotlight indexes a M4V movie and tries to create/access a codec property file. Or here are some other examples when Safari is running:
    sandboxd[4159] ([4152]): Safari Webpage P(4152) deny file-read-data /Users/stefan/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DownloadAssessment.plist
    Jul 27 12:41:16 neptun sandboxd[4183] ([4182]): Safari Webpage P(4182) deny file-read-data /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Defaults.plist

    Thanks!

  • System.log, kernel[0]: file: table is full

After updating to Mac OS X 10.4.6, apache no longer runs on my PowerBook G4. I run apache for local web work and it has been running fine for a long time.
When I run do sudo apachectl start:
    sudo apachectl start
/usr/local/bin/apachectl start: httpd could not be started
it cannot be started and /var/log/system.log shows:
    kernel[0]: file: table is full
All I could find after searching the Internet via Google, Google Groups, Apple Knowledge Base, etc. are these reasons:
    * Not enough sufficient free contiguous disk space on the volume. Need to optimize hard drive.
    * Bad node on the hard drive.
    * Defective hard drive.
I ran Disk Utility - Repair Permission and Repair Disk and both found no errors or problem. There were a few file permissions corrected, but that is all.
I also booted in to Mac OS X Safe Mode (CMD+S) and ran /sbin/fsck -yf and no errors were found/reported.
Since Mac OS X lacks a disk optimizer, I wondered where I could get a disk optimizer and whether optimize the volume would even correct this error.
Any free utilities to optimize the HFS+ volume in Mac OS X 10.4.6?
Apple's Support Knowledge Base states to either optimize the volume or do an Archive and Install. I cannot do an Archive and Install method due to my setup (MySQL, Apache, etc.).

    Hi, Mark.
I'm not an Apache guru, but you may have two different issues here, depending on when the
    kernel[0]: file: table is full
message is time-stamped relative to when you issue the
    sudo apachectl start command.
    1. Looking at the results of this Google search and some others tends to indicate that common causes for httpd could not be started are errors in the /etc/httpd/httpd.conf file.
You might also want to take a look at some of these other Discussions threads and in these "Networking and the Web" Discussion threads.
    2. One explanation I've found for kernel[0]: file: table is full is here.
    Hope these ideas help.
    Good luck!

  • System.log shows (every 3 minutes): no valid selfIDs for more than 2 min

Besides having to live with A LOT of USB 2.0 problems since the upgrade from 10.4.6 to 10.4.7 (like may other people reported) I also noticed a lot of errormessages in /var/log/system.log, that have to do with the Apple 6 port Firewire/USB2.0 PCI card.
When starting up the system a line gets written that says like:
Aug 3 18:08:44 localhost kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) VendorID 10b9 ID 5253 PCI now active, GUID 0030bd05 18000d15; max speed s400.
Then, when the machine is properly running the log continues:
Aug 3 18:11:34 server kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) VendorID 10b9 ID 5253 PCI: no valid selfIDs for more than 2 minutes after bus reset.
Aug 3 18:14:46 server kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) VendorID 10b9 ID 5253 PCI: no valid selfIDs for more than 2 minutes after bus reset.
Aug 3 18:17:57 server kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) VendorID 10b9 ID 5253 PCI: no valid selfIDs for more than 2 minutes after bus reset.
    etc. etc. etc.
That is about 1 line every 3 minutes.
I only have 3 USB2.0 drives connected to my 6 port card, no Firewire devices!
After trying all suggestions found on the Apple-site I simply kept getting these errors until: I plugged in a 'Target-Disk-Mode' PowerBook over a Firewire cable. Then the errors stopped showing up and the interface appears to be happy. I can even remove the PowerBook from the Firewire port now without getting any errors!

So, a workaround is to (temporarily if you wish) connect a Firewire-disk to the card. That will stop the errormessages from showing up.
The solution has to come from Apple. Empty Firewire ports should be allowed to 'not send any valid selfIDs' ever...

  • System.log after crash

I recently had my macbook pro repaired by applecare. For three years the computer was crashing whenever i played world of warcraft. after receiving it back form apple they had replaced the logic board, 2 fans and two thermal sensor cables. The game and everything else worked like a charm for the past two days... right now, however, all hardware cut out.. couldn't move the mouse, keyboard wouldn't respond.. but i was still receiving instant messengers. finally everything froze and i had to power down.. here is what the sysem.log file said. any ideas?

Anybody has a clue why this may be?

    Apache is a webserver.
    Go to console
    type:
    sudo apachectl stop
enter your password. you should not have that issue again

  • Understanding system.log

This keeps logging every few minutes. Any idea what an invalid colorscape type can be?

hi i'm having a similar problem. my stems from the game world of warcraft. in game, the symptoms manifest as such:
    1) choppy audio for a couple seconds
    2) game freezes for a couple seconds
    3) game resumes but drops from 30 frames per second to 5 frames per second (sometimes this is accompanied by a loss of internet connectivity which cannot be re-established until restarting the macbook pro)
    4) Normal FPS is established after 5-8 minutes
    5) Cycle repeats at 5-8 minute intervals
The system.log associated with this is as follows:

  • Diverting Logging from System Log

There is a known issue with RsyncX (University of Michigan version) and Tiger where RsyncX writes an erroneous error message to the System Log for every file it is processing. The problem is that the System Log can quickly grow to an enormous size and take up all vacant disk space.
So... is there any way I can redirect the logging to the likes of /dev/null ?
I've tried adding a "2>$1 /dev/null" to the end of the rsync command but this doesn't catch the logging.
    Thanks
    -david

I've managed to stop the messages with an edit to syslog.conf but it did not involve any redirection to /dev/null. Full details for anyone searching for same thing...
The /etc/syslog.conf file is the configuration file for the syslogd program and specifies what levels of log messages to send to what log files.
The following line of my conf file detailed what messages got sent to /var/log/system.log...
    .notice;.info;authpriv,remoteauth,ftp,install.none;kern.debug;mail.crit /var/log/system.log
The particular selector which was catching the rsyncx error was kern.debug. The 'debug' level is the lowest severity of message - i.e. it catches all messages being generated by the 'kern' facility (presumably short for 'kernel'). If this selector is raised just one level of severity to 'info', then the rsync error stops being caught and logged...
    .notice;.info;authpriv,remoteauth,ftp,install.none;kern.info;mail.crit /var/log/system.log
Of course, this edit will also catch any other debug level messages from being logged but until Rsyncx itself is updated, this solution seems an acceptable one.
To get the syslogd to reread the conf file, first get the PID from /var/run/syslog.pid and then HUP it with 'kill -1'
    -david
PS. Roger, sorry, that was a typo. The syslog messages don't seem to be part of the stdout or stderr.
