Variable audio volume

The audio volume from my Mac Mini varies randomly. I have tried using the analog audio out and now using an HDMI display with audio out of the display to a soundbar. I've tried regular computer speakers and the sound bar. I've tried the analog audio out and the audio from my HDMI display. It even varies when I use the internal speaker. It happens with iTunes and with Pandora through Safari. Is this an OS issue or is it my mini? I did take it apart to add a second drive.
Mac Mini mid 2011
8 gb ram
Startup disk is a Mercury Extreme 6G SSD using an OWC data doubler,
Second internal disk is a Toshiba hybrid disk
OS 10.9.4 on the SSD
Thanks for your help.

How are the levels changing...? Are they changing when you switch between App's like iTunes and Safari or are they changing while your listening in the same App...?
Please note that System Sound Effects, Date & Time Announcements and iTunes all have build in volume sliders that may need to be adjusted down to match the output level of video or music streaming in other App's like Safari.
For example; I use a Creative Speaker System and here are my settings that pretty much balance out all of the different volume outputs.
System Sound Effects is set a just above half.
Date and Time Announcement is set slightly more than half.
iTunes is set at about three quarters.
Then to control the overall output volume I use either the main output volume slider on the menu bar or the Creative Speaker System remote. Most of the time I just use the handy Creative Remote sitting next to my mouse and leave the main output volume slider at about two thirds.

  • No variable audio output for Cisco CHS 435HDC set top box.

Background:  Until the other day I had my stb connectected to a TV, using TV sound, with an HDMI cable.  The P265v2 remote volume control changed the TV volume.  No problems.
My new TV & home theater system was recently installed.  We don't use the TV speakers.  While my first preference was to program the Verizon remote to change the volume on my Onkyo receiver, this did not appear to be an option on the remote's programming instruction page on the Verizon website.  Instead, I am directed to change a setting on the remote that makes the Verizon remote change the stb output volume vs the tv volume.  I changed the setting on the remote and ensured the stb box was set up for "variabe" audio output.
Problem:  Using the stb variable audio settings, volume settings 1 through 30 produce the same volume.  (Volume setting 0 produces no volume, as one would hope.)  It appears the "variable" setting isn't producing a variable output as it should be on this unit.
Thinking that maybe the receiver was complicating the sitation, I tried connecting the stb to the old TV and the new TV directly and had the same results.
Now, while I am watching TV, I need to have the receiver remote at hand in addition to the Verizon remote.  It would be nice to have the volume be adjustable as it should be while using the Verizon remote.  I don't like the idea of using a seperate universal remote because then I would lose some of the functionality that the Verizon remote provides when watching TV, using the DVR, watching on demand, etc.
I would like to know if this is a problem just with my unit, or if it exists with all of these units, which would hopefully be fixed with a Cisco/Verizon firmware update soon, hopefully.
    Thank you.

Having same issues with hdmi and optical. Any fix to this.
    Hello,
In order to control the volume on your home theater system, you'll need a FiOS TV Universal Remote that has the 4-buttons on the top for 'DVD', 'Aux'iliary, 'TV' and 'STB'.  The audio receiver would have to be programmed into the FIOS TV Remote, and controlled using the 'Aux'iliary button.
Verizon's 4-Button Universal Remote Controls are available for purchase:
    a) online via www.verizon.com/fiosaccessories
    OR
    b) at a local FiOS TV store (call first to check if they have them in stock).  For a list of stores:  http://www22.verizon.com/support/residential/tv/fiostv/general+support/account+issues/questionsone/8...
Presently, the default remotes for new set top boxes are the 2-button P-265 (newer version) remotes.
Regarding a problem with HDMI/optical on Cisco 435 STBs, check out the following:
    Go to this webpage:  http://www22.verizon.com/Support/Residential/TV/FiOSTV/Receivers/Equipment+Issues/QuestionsOne/12839...
Click on the link for 'Cisco CHS 435 HD DVR User Guide'.
Open the PDF and go to page 22 for 'Connecting to a Home Theater System...'.
    Hope this helps!

  • Audio volume drops in FLV file after inserting into Captivate 4

The audio volume drops almost 50% in FLV files inserted into Captivate 4.  Is there a solution for this problem?
    Thank you.

    Hi Sony,
That was the first thing I ever tried when I discovered the default setting for FLV and slide video (variables and advanced actions are my favorites, as you know perhaps). Perhaps I missed something, and did not try in CP 5.5 or after the latest patch on CP5.0, but this system variable seemed only to have effect on the normal audio clips, not on audio for video?

  • Audio volume low when computer wakes from sleep - os x yosemite

I've been having an issue ever since I upgraded to OS X Yosemite, where the audio volume coming out of my external speakers is extremely low after I wake my computer up from sleep.  The only resolution I have found is restarting the computer.  Once I do that, the audio volume is great.  If I were to boot up my computer after it has been completely shut down, the audio volume is also great.  The issue only occurs after sleep.  Anyone else having a similar issue?  Is there another fix besides restarting the computer?
Speakers: Bose Companion 2 Series II (these are wired, not bluetooth)
Computer: Mac Pro - late 2013 - running Yosemite

This is a BUG.  It has been submitted to engineering many times - unfortunately Apple has not done anything about it.   We have 5 Mac Pros,  all 5 do the same thing after updating to Yosemite.   The  PRAM / SMC reset is useless -  we even  installed a fresh  OS on one of the machines (a suggestion of the level 2 Apple tech)  same problem.   Clearly this is a system level bug.   Only way to get it resolved is to keep pounding the bug report site with requests.     The squeaky wheel gets the oil.   The problem is 100% repeatable on the machines that exhibit the bug.
In the mean time  set up an applescript with this command and it will reset the sound - do not include the brackets :
<do shell script "sudo killall coreaudiod" with administrator privileges>
Run it every time you wake from sleep and you won't have to deal with the problem ever again.
Pretty lame that Apple has not fixed it even though the problem appears to be pretty widespread.

  • ITunes 12.1 freezing upon launch due to "determining audio volume"

My (Late 2011) MBP running Yosemite is freezing when I launch iTunes. It is 12.1, the latest version. Upon launch, it says "Determining Audio Volume" and is on the first of my several thousand songs. The spinning wheel eventually pops up and I am forced to forced shut-down my mac by holding the power button. I can't delete iTunes as it is "required by the OS" and I can't open it and go to the preferences to uncheck "soundcheck" because it freezes the entire mac upon launch.
Anyone experiencing the same issue or know what might fix it?
    Thanks

I had the same problem, but I think I've found a cure.
Even though Sound Check was disabled in preferences, iTunes would insist on Determining Audio Volume everytime it was launched. But there is also a 'Sound Check' preference in the Burn CD dialogue.
To turn it off you need to select a playlist, hit the Burn Disc button (bottom left) select Audio CD as the disc format and un-check 'Use Sound check'
Then you must hit the 'Burn' button (if you don't it will not remember the new settings) You can then cancel the burn by clicking the X in the itunes player window.
This has cured the problem for me

  • Audio volume is always maximum at start

I upgraded to Mac OS X Lion from Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
Before the upgrade when I reboot Mac OS X the audio volume is at the same level I left before.
Now when Mac OS X Lion starts, the audio level is always at maximum.
I think this is a little bug of the new OS.
Is there anyone with the same problem?
    Does anyone have solved it?
    Thanks you all.

  • Non-Apple Keyboard: any way to control system audio volume?

I have a non-Apple Keyboard on my new Mini Lion 7.2.1
Is there any way to control system audio volume via the keyboard ?

Well. I can do this. But just because, on my Apple keyboard, there are the keys that do the job. There's a key to mute, and the keys to adjust low and high the sound. But keyboard shortcuts, I don't think exist. The aren't in keyboard shortcut in Keyboard panel, within System Preferences. The bottom line is that isn't a menu item in Finder for lower sound and higher sound. The only option would be an AppleScript that you save as an applet within Scripts menu (activated in Finder via Script Editor) and you invoke with a shortcut... Well, you can do it, if you open the script Set Output Volume in UI Elements Script folder within Scripts folder. Try it out!

  • Slideshow audio volume adjustment

Help! I can't seem to adjust the audio volume of the audio file on a slideshow project. The audio volume on playback is always the same whether I slide the volume adjustment to the maximum or down to zero. On playback the audio volume is always the same. I need to lower this volume because it drowns out the narration part of the slideshow. How do you do this??
    Thank You!

I have come across this problem but I’m not sure I have a solution, perhaps only a work-around.
I have managed to save a slideshow from PSE as a WMV file on my hard drive.
Opening the WMV file with Windows Movie Maker (sorry if you are on a MAC) does allow the volume of the background track to be adjusted whilst also having a primary (Commentary) audio track.

  • Audio volume on aluminum 13" vs black 13"

Is there anyone out there who used to own a black MacBook and now owns an Aluminum 13" MacBook? I'm wondering about the audio volume on the new model. I have a first-gen black MacBook, and the sound doesn't get very loud at all, even at max volume. Did they fix this in the Aluminum model? I'm about to buy one, but if the sound is still very quiet, maybe a MacBook Pro would be a better choice...

    Here I am
I had a 1st gen Black MacBook and now a 13" Aluminium 2.0 Ghz: unfortunately I have no chance to compare them (the black was sold before getting the alu), but I didn't note any big differences, it seems that the alu has a little more power (and a slightly predominance in low frequencies from the right side...)

  • How do I get 10.4.8 AUDIO VOLUME back?!

My daughters' iMac G3 is like a freakin' megaphone now after updating it to 10.4.9. Why did Apple have to mess with audio volume levels? It was FINE the way it was. Now, in 10.4.9, the lowest volume setting is around the 50%-65% mark it was in 10.4.8.
I've ready other complaints elsewhere, now just want a solution. She's had it for months and we know the volume it produced, now, like I said, it's a megaphone and she even says its too loud (she's four).
    Help!

The max OS for a PowerPC processor Mac is Leopard OS 10.5.x. All higher OSs require a Mac with an Intel processor.
Here's the instructions if you have the discs.
Mac OS X: Changing or resetting an account password
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274?viewlocale=en_US
    Changing your administrator password
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh655.html
Here's one method to reset the password without the install disc:
    1. boot computer and hold the "apple" key and the "s" key.
    2. wait for terminal show
    3. release keys
    4. type without the quotes: "/sbin/mount -uaw"
    5. press enter
    6. type without the quotes: "rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
    7. press enter
    8. type without the quotes: "reboot"
    9. press enter
This will let you create a new admin account when you reboot your computer.
Also, without the discs, look at Mac OS X Tip - No Password, No Root, No CD? No Problem.
    http://www.macobserver.com/tip/2003/06/16.1.shtml
Here is a way to get around not knowing the admin password on Macs.
To reset your OS X password without an OS X CD you need to enter terminal and create a new admin account:
       1. Reboot
       2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
       3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
              * mount -uw /
              * rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
              * shutdown -h now
       4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can simply delete the old one and you’re good to go again!
You'll have to buy (for over $100) a Leopard retail install DVD to get back to Leopard.

  • Stop "Determining Audio Volume"

    iTunes 11.0.1.12
    Windows 8, 64-bit
I'm suffering from continual Determining Audio Volume. I figured if I left it running all night, Iit would complete. But it's only at 1,049 of 49,000+ files. At this rate, it would take months to complete! this is insane.
And this is happening after "Soundcheck" was unchecked in Edit > Preferences > Playback.

  • Reset audio volume

I'm not sure where to post this question, but here goes. Is it possible to reset the audio on my mac so that the sound volume of video clips and movies is raised? I regularly encounter video with audio volume that is too low, even though I have the volume level in System Preferences set to the maximum. I find the problem in DVDs, QT, and YouTube, etc.
    Thanks, Caoim

Might be corrupted sound preferences ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
    Type or copy paste the following;
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
Click Go then move both .plist files from the Audio folder to the Trash.
    com.apple.audioDeviceSettings.pllist
    com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
Restart your Mac. See if that made a difference ...

  • Audio Volume

A lot of times I find the audio volume on the MBA to be too low. It's fine when I'm using earphones, but sometimes I don't want to do that, and I find it hard to hear things sometimes. Maybe I'm just old and I've heard too much loud music, but has anyone used any 3rd party software that helps with this situation, or found another solution? Yes, I have the setting up as high as it will go.

    Hi Kenshane,
The MacBook Air uses a single, mono speaker on the right hand side of the keyboard (Shift key) area. As a result, the sound coming out of the unit is going to be pretty low. An external speaker kit, especially if you intend to use the unit for multimedia is recommended.
