Variable data and InDesign interface

I have a proposal that will have variable data in it and needs to stay editable. I created the document in InDesign and not sure what program I can use to create the interface in.
What I want is to set up an interface that either I or someone in my office fill out or select certain items they want in the proposal and it creates a document (that is still editable, just in case there are a few tweeks they want)
The variable data would include the basics such as:
Client/Company name
Address
etc.
They also want to be able to select a menu of "benefits" to pick from.
For example the interface would say:
What benefits would you like to include in proposal?
X  Benefit A
    Benefit B
X  Benefit C
X  Benefit D
     Benefit E
Then the ones with the "X" would appear but not the rest.
Certain verbiage they use such as "customer or member" depending on what type of business they are writing the proposal for. For example:
What type of company?
A ....(verbiage would be customer)
B ....(verbiage would be member)
C ....(verbiage is customized)
Then there is some pages that will include math:
Product name                      prod $ (won't change)          qty                total investment                 
Is this even possible?
Ok discovered Conditional Text....very cool. So that answers the verbiage question.
Is it possible to create a dreamweaver page, import that into excel and then run a data merge or am I over thinking it....even bigger question is it too complicated for someone else to do?

I have a very similar project in mind for a client and am trying to figure out how to best research this. I'm struggling to even use the right terms to find discussion threads. This is the first one I have come across that comes very close. My client wants to have a bunch of documents available for a proposal, then have a window where he checks the documents he wants to use and the order they should appear. I imagine some of those documents will need to be created prior to this process or a window would allow them to fill in the variable data...client info, etc. I was thinking a more rudimentary way would be to build all the chapters and optional files out organizing them well in folders, then just using Acrobat to choose and combine the files, ordering them as needed. I guess that's my back-up plan, but would love more input/suggestions on how to be more dynamic within InDesign itself.

    I've been using Xmpie with InDesign for variable data and graphics for years, however the recent Xmpie versions are buggy and crash all the time.  Xmpie doesn't know how to resolve this and are ignoring my support cases.  I am now using an old computer with an equally old version of Xmpie with InDesign 3.  They're old but they work.  I was wondering what others are using and what they recommend.  Thanks for any info in advance!

    You have two choices. The cheapest choices is to learn to use a font tool and do it yourself.
    The best source I know of is a company called FontLab who produce a variety of applications at all level of price and capabilities:

  • PPML print stream and InDesign

    I would like to do a job with variable data in InDesign and print it to our Fiery RIP using a PPML print stream. The Fiery supports PPML technology.
    I know there are programs that work with InDesign, (like XMPie), and produce a PPML print stream, but I can't find any info on PPML directly from InDesign.
    Can anyone direct me to the info I need?

    Do you have any suggestions for VDP software? What looks like it will put PDF/VT to best use?
    I have InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat, (CS4 Suite) on the Mac. I also have Printshop Mail on the Mac. We're looking into DirectSmile, but that's only available on the PC. We have one of those, too.
    We'd like to be able to generate PURLs as well as do variable print.

  • Data and Dashboard Security using ROLES Variable in OBIEE 11g

    I'm currently using OBIEE 11g. I'm wondering how to implement the security for data and dashboard in the 11g.
    Below is the sample of how the security matrix requirement when I use the 10g version. In 10g, we usually use GROUP (for the data filter in RPD) and WEBGROUPS (for dashboard objects) variables in my initialization block to read from database. As we have 2 different variables, it is possible to control security separately for data and dashboard.

Do I still create G1, G2, G3, WG1, WG2, and WG3 as application roles then only use G1-3 in the RPD to filter the data and only use WG1-3 in the analytics to serve as webgroups?

    I mean that role creation and user->role assignment will be managed outside of to the obiee interface - whether that's via the database, LDAP, fmw etc.
    Webgroup creation and assignment is managed within the obiee interface and I think that has a lot of benefits - generally you have people responsible for shared folders and dashboard creation, so having them responsible for webgroups and presentation permissions is preferable for me.

    Yes .. I'm assuming you have something like
    G1 | US

    Which becomes

    R5 | Marketing
    R6 | Sales
    And John belongs to R1 and R4, Fred belongs to R2 and R4 etc. So you would set your data filters against R1-R3 and use R4-R6 like webgroups in the presentation services.

  • Text Manipulation and Variable Data in Photoshop

    Our company is getting into variable data printing. There are a few ways to get variable data into photos. I've played with a program called Direct Smile. Its text manipulation tools are rather good. It lays a grid over the text and you can select each grid intersection and pull and push to get the text into the shape you want.
    There are other programs that work through InDesign and Photoshop, using scripts to insert the variable data into the Photoshop text layer.
    When I tried to warp the text in Photoshop I found that beyond a certain point, you have to flatten the text, at which point, it's no longer a text layer that can accept variable data from a database.
    Is there anything like the grid tool in Direct Smile in Photoshop?

    I’m unfamiliar with Direct Smile.
    But for text-manipulation in Photoshop You might want to consider converting the Text to a Smart Object which can then be warped or treated with the Distort-Filter Displace, all the while maintaining the text-layer within the SO and thusly its editability.
    And if I remember correctly one can even make Liquify applicable as a Smart Filter, but one would have to save the Mesh separately … possibly too problematic a solution.
    Or You could go via Illustrator which offers Envelope Distort (which provides a grid-based »plasticity«) and then embed the result thereof as a SO in the Photoshop-file. Unfortunately Illustrator doesn’t Script as comfortably as Photoshop in my limited experience and Envelope Distort my be unscriptable altogether.
    But if I understand correctly You will want to automate all that stuff, so maybe You should check out the respective Scripting-Fora.

  • In Design and Variable Data Printing....

    Does In Design have VDP capabilities.  I am thinking of designing a 2 part NCR form that is numbered.  Is it possible to include the numbering sequence in the design so that as it prints it numbers each form sequentially (similar to name and address info but a specific number)?

    on the indystimer website there is no set of instructions or tutorials but the script is only used to generate the range of numbers that I want for the database e.g. 000201-000500. this can be done in excel too but i just find the indysnumbergenerator a lot quicker.

    to make a datamerge so that the end result is pages printed single sided but in duplicate so the records appear:
    pdf page 1 - record 1 top sheet
    pdf page 2 - record 1 bottom sheet
    pdf page 3 - record 2 top sheet
    pdf page 4 - record 2 bottom sheet...
    is to design the merge on one page including the variable data, BUT once it is finished, duplicate the page from the pages palette so that there is now two pages in the file. when exported to PDF via the data merge as above should result.
    is this what the OP is after?

  • MS Word Web Service Interface: bad format of date and currency fields

    Hi,
    I am using MS Word Web Service interface to create contract documents. However, my date and currency fields show in a strange format. Date is in"YYYY-MM-DD" format, while currencies always have "." as decimal separator (probably technical values). My user settings are "DD.MM.YYYY" for dates and "n.nnn,dd" for decimal numbers.
    My workaround is to create a Z structure for WS interface with char fields and then do conversion through CRM_WST_RT_BADI->OUTBOUND_PROCESSING method. This works, but requires a lot of custom development.
    Is there a way to "tell" the interface to use correct formats in MS Word without doing it all manually through custom fields?

  • Date and Time Variable

    Hello BI gurus,
    This may be confusing so I will try my best to explain...
    I am working on a report in which I need to allow the user to choose a specific Date and Time period.  Now I have both Date and Time avaliable in my infoprovider.  If I create a variable for both date and time seperately it will not be able to associate the date with the time (right?).
    Ex.  User enters date range 2/01/2008 to 2/08/2008 and
                            Time range 10:00pm         to 3:00pm
    (and i understand that time may be kept using a 24 hr clock but this still doesnt fix my issue)
    this will output an error because the first time is greater than the later.
    and if I choose a time that is from 3:00 to 10:00 I can't be sure that the date range and the time are both being applied correctly (since this error above).   
    Is there a way that we can tie the date with the time so the report will know that I am asking for 2/01/2008 at 10:00pm to 2/08/2008 at 3:00pm?
    or can i make the variables dependant on each other..enter begining date, time to end Date and Time

    If I have a Date type variable: Date today=new Date(), Is it possible to also give the current time to "today" but still keep the type as Date?
    I mean , for exmaple I want to store this "today" to database as Date type, and the value in database is "2007-05-05 13:30:13". I do not want to use SimpleDateFormat to do that, because I want to use Date type not String. Is that possible? how to implement this?

  • Variable scope within an interface and some questions

    I am creating a DataStorage interface with a member variable (can I call it a member variable when it is in an interface?) called dataObject. From what I remember, and what the compiler is telling me, the scope declarations "private," or "protected" can not be used on either methods or member variables in an interface.
    Now I have another class DataInput that implements DataStorage and I want to make the dataObject private and put in accessor methods to get to the dataObject. But I also remember reading something that said, during inheritance you can not make the scope of the method (and variable?) more narrow. Meaning if a method was defined as default in the parent class, the subclass can not override that method to give it private access all of a sudden.
    Now a couple of questions with this...does that rule only apply to subclassing (that is with extends) or does it also apply to implementing interfaces. Second question, I am pretty sure that rule applies to methods that are being overriden, but does it also apply to variables in an interface...because if that is the case, I can't re-declare the variable in the class that implements the interface to be private...and then there is no way to protect that variable.
    By the way I did re-declare the variable in the subclass (implementing class) and declared it as a private, and it works...but I'm still trying to figure out the general rule.

    well if the interface variables are implicitly public static final, how come I am able to re-declare the variable name within the class that implemented the interface.
    If for example in interface Car there is a variable color, how come in class Honda implements Car, I can redeclare the variable color, and give it public access. I thought final meant final, no redeclaring...but does that not hold for static variables?

      I would like to retrieve current system date and time and concatenate into a variable. I would really appreciate if someone could help me. I have the following code and i seem to get some kind of error.
    I would like my output to be like:

    which SQL version do you use? In 2005 there is no variable "date" or "time", instead of this you have to use "datetime".

  • Fixed start date and variable end date

    I'm using Project 2010 Standard. Task A has already started. It can't end until 2 weeks after the completion of task B. The only way I can make Project schedule this task is by doing so manually, allowing Project to calculate the duration. But then if the
    end date of task B changes, Project reschedules the entire task based on the duration without regard for the start date. If I add a % complete to task A, then the end date doesn't change if the end date of task B does. Project seems to fix the duration
    once it's calculated. I need the duration to be flexible based on the fixed start date and the end date of task B. This project file is stored in SharePoint so I can't make task A a hammock task. I get the error "You cannot create links from a project
    file that exists on a Web folder to another file" even though it's the same file. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    I'm afraid without a hammock task the only way to do what you want is either with a manual reschedule or a macro to recalculate the duration of Task A when Task B moves.
    Update: Okay, after playing around here is a little trick that might work.
    1. Break Task A into two parts (e.g. -1 and -2)
    2. Set the predecessor of Task A-2 to be finish-to-start with Task A-1 and finish-to-finish + 2w with Task B
    Depending on the nature of Task A you may still need to do a little manual adjusting but it will effectively allow the start of Task A to be fixed and the finish to be variable depending on the status of Task B. Does that work for you?

    We have a requirement to build a datamart (cube to cube) between two BW systems, using deltas; this is OK and should not present any issue. However a further requirement has arisen, requiring to provide date and time of the created files to outbound systems. I have been looking to RS* and RO* tables for finding out the details of the delta queue.
    Table RSDMDELTA provides the Data Mart Delta Management: could this table be used to provide required details? Or are there any other relevant tables containing this info?

  • How do I create multiple-up pages populated with variable data?

    I am trying to create a variable data Illustrator file but with a catch, I have to create multiple points of data on one artboard.  I am using a template with 36 identical shapes, and I'm trying to add a different image to each based off of using variable data.  I understand the premise of creating multiple output files based off of an illustrator file and data, but I have to create a single output file using 36 points of data, all QR codes.  The reason is that this 36-up 14.5" x 14.5" sheet will be printed on a large format inkjet and then be fed into another machine (not a cutter) that requires that specific layout for it's process.  I cannot create individual files, I need sheets based off of my 14.5" x 14.5" 36-up template.
    Any suggestions other than making each shape in the template a separate variable (even though they are all the exact same shape) would be greatly appreciated.
    My goal is to populate each of these shapes with a different QR code and then output the whole sheet as a single .EPS or .PDF file.

    You're barking up the wrong tree for this with Illustrator's Variables palette.
    Think of it like this:
    Imagine a typical spreadsheet with multiple rows of the same kind of data, except for the first row which serves as the "labels" of the columns.
    The on-page objects which you define as Variables in Illustrator correspond to the first row; the column labels.
    The datasets correspond to the following rows of values below the label row.
    Cycling through the datasets simply moves up and down the rows, revealing one row's data at a time for each of the column labels.
    Your multi-up array does not fit that data model. You are essentially trying to make a layout showing all the individual cells below the single label of one column (downward across all rows). (Illustrator's Variables feature doesn't even let you put multiple instances of a single variable in the document, so that the same value occurs in multiple places.)
    You're trying to build the functional equivalent of a typical "gang up" press sheet, like a 10-up layout of business cards, each showing the same kind of data (name, phone, etc.) for multiple employees, so that you don't have to do separate press runs for each employee. That's certainly a common need, and one quite appropriate to a program like Illustrator. But Illustrator's Variables feature does not do that.
    Essentially, what you are wanting to do is to replicate the basic functionality of any program which is used to print labels from data (like the typical mail merge function for address labels which are ganged up with some number of different labels on a page). What you want could be done in Illustrator via a custom JavaScript, but it would be a pretty silly exercise in reinventing the wheel. If it were me, I'd probably build the solution in FileMaker Pro (a database program), depending on the specific graphics requirements. However, you should be able to do it in InDesign, using its data merge feature.
