Variable free disk space
Suddenly, the amount of free disk space is jumping between 26 gB and 0 gB. This happens periodically, with almost no programs running. I am getting the error message "Your hard disk is almost full" when this happens. iDisk sync is off. I tried repairing permission and DiskWarrior. I have had no problems since installing Mac OS 10.5..
Everything has been fine until today. I installed Airport Utility 5.3.1 update ?yesterday, but that is not likely the issue. Running Activity Monitor did not give me the answer.
Firstly, I confirm that in LV 8.6, we don't have this problem.
Secondly, let me explain what defragment is doing. For example, if you write data to a file for multiple times, you'll probably get TDMS file with multiple segments and headers, so that the .tdms_index file will quite large. What defragment does is to re-organize your data in the tdms file and you'll get only one segment/header and a tiny .tdms_index file.
So, after you writing the file and you can make up a VI, read the channels in the file and write the data into a new TDMS file, only one time's writing will not result in multiple segments, so the new written tdms file is well organized. If you can't write all channels altogether once to a TDMS file, you can write one channel by one channel, if there are not too many channels. Does this make sense?
I recommend you to do so if you want to write a 2.0 TDMS file and benefit from TDMS high speed streaming in LabVIEW 2009 and it's a workaround not to use defragment but also get a "defragemented" file. I'm afraid the fix would not go with 2009 SP1.

Free Disk Space vs Mac Memory Usage
Hi,
I'm wondering if you might be able to help me - I'm so confused with this issue.
I have a MacBook 2008 with an upgraded 320GB HDD, with currently 203GB free disk space.
My back up disk is 120GB - perfect for a time machine back up of 117 GB of data. However, the TM says theres not enough memory because the full size of the back is 150GB? How can this be?
For some reason, the free disk space figure is different to the memory usage figures in About My Mac?
Can anyone explain to me why this is?
My other half uses this computer and has only pictures and files on it, no music or movies? So how can she have utilised 117GB of data? This was previously a shared Mac, but I've deleted my user acc since upgrading and wanted to make this Mac entirely hers.
Any help regarding this will be truly appreciated.
Sincerely,
TarmakCarbonCopyClone. It is "donateware" ... pay if you want to. Others use SuperDuper! (both a free and a paid version). I prefer CCC, but do not let that stop you from paying for SuperDuper if others convince you as both are very competent.
It makes a bootable copy of your system partition, and used repeatedly will make "incremental" backups that take far less time than the original backup. I have a TimeMachine backup (I consider it "secondary") and a CCC backup whic I consider "primary" and will eventually save me when my system partition gets cranky and refuses to boot -- use the option key at startup to choose the external disk to boot from.
When you boot from the external drive, which will have CCC running in it, you can then "clone back" to the new internal drive. -
Update download trouble: App Store says, in error, "-not enough free disk space"
I wonder if anyone can help me troubleshoot this... I am unable to download some updates as from the App Store, and instead get an error message that suggests I don't have enough free disk space despite there being over 100GB free.
More detail: after installing Mavericks successfully, I started updating a few applications. While downloading iMovie and iPhoto there was an error - can't recall what the pop-up said, but I think it was a fairly general kind of error message. When I then tried to download them again, the App Store gave me an error message about free disk space, so I deleted a bunch of files and tried again. Same result, same error message ("Your hard disk does not have enough free space"). I checked on free space, however, and at this point I had over 100GB of free space.
I tried deleting the com.apple.storeagent folder in my Library/Caches folder, then trying again. but it made no difference. I've restarted, repaired permissions, verified the disk, restarted again, and I'm still seeing the error.
One odd feature of this problem: in the App Store purchases tab (see screengrab below), the icons for both iMovie and iPhoto are missing/broken, which might just point the way to what is going wrong.
System details:
IMac 27", 2009
2.8GHz i7
12GB RAM
Running OS X 10.9
Couple of screengrabs to illustrate:From the menu bar, select
▹ System Preferences ▹ Time Machine
If the padlock icon is closed, click it to unlock the settings and authenticate. Turn Time Machine OFF, then turn it backON and close the preference pane. Wait a few minutes, then try the operation again. -

Free disk space in Finder vs Terminal df command
i am in process of writing a shell script to backup our data.
before starting the backup process, i am checking how much space is left on the disk:
terminal> df -k /my_data_directory/
Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on
/dev/disk0s2 244781464 173055384 71470080 71% /
this states 71.47 GB free space on /
however, the Finder reports 96.17 GB free space on Macintosh HD (which is also mounted on /).
where does that difference come from? how can i "calculate" the real free disk space?tuscan wrote:
do i get your answer right:
this means the Finder is reporting an amount of free space one can never use?
its number includes those bytes that are unused in used disk blocks?
e.g. say a block is 8k an my specific disk, and i'm saving a file with 1k of text.
the Finder would report 7k of these 8k as free space?
while df takes the whole 8k block as "used"?
As jsd2 points out, it is more complicated than that. I don't have local snapshots running on my machine but I still have a significant discrepancy, although not as large as yours.
df is a fast tool and only looks at blocks. The Finder does more work and keeps track of file sizes and, apparently, the potential to delete them. But if you had a one-byte file, those other 4095 bytes wouldn't necessarily be wasted. You could write another 4095 bytes to that file without losing any disk space. -
When I select my HDD in finder and select Get Info it reports that I have 150GB of free disk space, however when I run disk utility it reports that there is only 55GB of free disk space. What is going on? Where is that 95GB discrepancy being used? How do I reclaim it?
See if this helps elucidate:

I am trying to create a query in Queries section under Monitoring, To find out the free disk space of C: drive.
Am using the below query, but it shows lot many fields, I need only Machine names of the collection and their
Free Disk Space on C: drive
select * from SMS_R_System inner join SMS_G_System_LOGICAL_DISK on SMS_G_System_LOGICAL_DISK.ResourceId = SMS_R_System.ResourceId where SMS_G_System_LOGICAL_DISK.DeviceID = "C:" and SMS_G_System_LOGICAL_DISK.FreeSpace > 1024
Please assistThe SELECT part of the query will govern what fields you are shown, so perhaps try:

NO notebook is a mass storage device, so dont try to turn it into one, it doesnt work that way.
Unless youre using it every couple weeks, its static data and should be on an external HD
In the case of a Macbook Air or Macbook Pro Retina with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace. You should never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’.
Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their computers internal HD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your macbook has a HD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your computer to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation. -
Free disk Space in jdk1.5
How to find the free disk space .I have jdk1.5 being installed.
Can we use getFreeSpace() ?
Which all packages to importWindows doesn't have a command that cleanly returns the amount of free space in a root drive. There are a number of ways that you can get the information.
One is to create a .bat batch file that does a "dir" command on the root directory, and then pipe the results through a filter to eliminate all but the one line that has the disk space information. like this:
dir c:\ | find "Dir(s)"Execute the batch file using Runtime.exec, then parse the returned line in the Java code. -

How Can I Get the Amount of Free Disk Space using windows 7 please share example using GetDiskSpace i have already studied http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/9958B8E473C4EF1786256BBC0053B64F
Reading your question a bit more in detail, I doubt whether you are using Win32 API GetDiskFreeSpace function (for which my previous post is the solution) of Programmer's Toolbox GetDiskSpace function.
With reference to the second one, it works even with disks larger than 2GB but you need to use the proper formatting code to display the returned value. I updated my example to show total free space in the debug output window and added a comparison with 3GB value using UInt64TypeCompareUInt from the Programmer's Toolbox. -
I'm losing 2GB of free disk space every day. How can I prevent this?
Every day this week I notice that I lose about 2GB of free disk space on my MacBook Pro. I'm now down to 20GB. When I started the week, I had over 30GB. I haven't installed any new programs of signficance. I store my large documents (photos, music, movies) on an external hard disk. While the MBP is not giving me problems, performance-wise, I'm concerned about the constant loss of free space.
I checked the size of my sleepimage and swapfile in /private/var/vm and they appear to be normal. The sleepimage size remains constant at 4.29GB and there is only one swapfile that is using 67.1 megs.
I don't seem retain disk space even after clearing the User and System caches, repairing permissions, and restarting my computer.
I checked my recent Console messages and here is a short snippet:
5/13/10 9:49:04 AM com.apple.launchd.peruser.514[285] (com.shirtpocket.backuponmount) Throttling respawn: Will start in 9 seconds

I reviewed my Login Items and there doesn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary there that could be chewing up disk space.

Lastly, I did a search in Finder using the following criteria and came up empty:

File visibility = Visible or Invisible
Last modified date is within last 5 days
Size is greater than 10 MBYes, I'm running TechTool Pro 5 and it definitely looks like the Data Recovery feature is causing the disk space to be lost. I see lots of recent dates under the Directory Backups list. Looking at the Help guide, I haven't yet found how to turn this feature off.
