Variety of problems- not reading from hard drive, etc.

My 30 GB iPod Photo died a while ago, so I recently received an 80 GB 5G for the holidays. However, it hasn't been working correctly. I have a whole list of problems- most would seem to stem from it not reading from the hard drive. Note that almost every single one of these can be resolved by resetting the iPod, but having to do that over and over and losing my place in podcasts and that sort of thing is really annoying. I already tried restoring it completely once, and it didn't seem to help. What's odd is that, shortly after getting the iPod, I went on vacation for almost a week, in a warmer climate. It worked perfectly fine the entire time I was there, but then started up again upon my return.
- The classic just not playing songs/videos, where you select a song and the artwork doesn't load and it doesn't play then just ends. Sometimes accompanied by freezing.
- Skipping. I've never heard an iPod skip before, but it's happened several times. Also, I've had a weirder problem where a second or so of sound from earlier in a podcast repeats every so often during the rest of it. Just turning the iPod off and on again helps with that, though. And sometimes something will randomly stop in the middle.
- Not recognizing data. My old iPod did this all the time. You reset it, and there are no songs, videos, etc. listed. If you connect it to the computer, iTunes classifies all the data as "other." It generally goes away if you reset it again. This has also happened partially, where some things show up but not others.
- Sometimes, during a video, the audio will suddenly become a horrible screeching sound. You can stop the video and try to play something else, but then it freezes. The video might work perfectly fine later- that's not the problem.
- Slow functioning. This might be normal- things like the graphics "skipping" while both listening to something and playing a game. Or sometimes it just seems generally sluggish to respond.
- Not working with the case. I have this case (I had almost the same one for my last iPod), and all the above problems occur mostly (though not entirely) while the iPod is inside. I doubt the case itself is the problem- I can't see any way it would be preventing things like reading from the HD- but they definitely seem to be tied together. Sometimes when it's in the case the controls will take several seconds to respond to button pushes (play/pause, select, etc.) but respond perfectly fine to scrolling/volume change.
I think I've pretty much exhausted my options for trying to fix things myself. Should I just send it back and hope the replacement is better? Will Apple even agree to replace it if they can't see it malfunctioning?

Also, though no one's replied yet, I remembered more problems:
- Displaying the wrong album art (only occasionally).
- Colors FREAKING OUT when viewing photos. The way to get rid of this seems to be to go back to the photo library, select a different photo (which hopefully loads correctly), going back up to the photo library again, and reselecting the original photo. But it's still annoying.

  • HT1338 My macbook pro(2010) is not reading the hard drive, but the hard drive works through the USB?

    Hi everyone,
My Macbook pro(2010) is not reading the internal Hard Drive. At first I thought it to be a hard drive gone bad, so i bought a new hard drive. My macbook is still not reading the Hard Drive. I am able to use the original hard drive through a external(USB) connection. Also, when the macbook turns, there is a redelling sound. Can anyone offer me any suggestions to what the problem might be?

It sounds like the internal cable connecting the HDD to the logic board is improperly connected or faulty.  An appointment at an Apple genius bar might be a good option.  The repair should not be too expensive.
    Ciao.

  • DV7 Not reading second hard drive

I have a DV7-4280us and have recently pruchased the hard drive caddy kit and a Seagate M9T 2TB Hard Drive.  Once installed the laptop will not read the hard drive.  I have looked in disk management and it does not show there either.  My next thought was either the cable or the motherboard connection was not working correctly so I installed a WD 1TB drive and it was picked up flawlessly.  I then went to my other DV7 laptop, a DV7-3173nr, and it was able to pick up the Seagate M9T 2TB drive with no problem.  How can I get my DV7-4280us to pick up the 2Tb drive?

    Hi Airopossum7,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Pavilion dv7-4280us Entertainment Notebook and not seeing the new HDD. Here is a link to restoring the BIOS. The restore BIOS to default settings will get the Notebook to look for the HDD. If that does not help try to a hardware test.
Please let me know how this goes.
    Thanks.

  • Deleting from library does not delete from hard drive????

itunes support states when deleting from library, it should prompt to remove from hard drive. i am not getting this prompt. i cannot find a setting that changes this either. please advise
    thanks,

    It only deletes it from the hard drive if it is in the iTunes Music folder path;
Look at your itunes menu > Edit > Preferences >Advanced tab.
    "itunes music folder location"
For example, say it is set to C:/Music. If you delete a file from the itunes library list that exists in C:/Music you'll get asked if you want to keep or delete the file.
If you delete a file from the itunes library lists that exists in C:/SomeOtherFolder, it will not get deleted from the hard drive.

  • Colour differences & LR not deleting from hard drive

    Hi,
I am running a Dell Dimension 1100, a NEC MultiSync 70 monitor, Xp SP 2 home, Olympus Master 2 and a full version of Lightroom 1.0,Photoshop CS2, and use a Olympus E-500 DSLR.
I have a slight issue with how Lightroom shows the colours of my pictures when i am comparing Olympus Master 2 v. Lightroom 1.0. Most pictures its hard to tell the difference without going back and forth constantly, but when i look at my pictures of flowers or landscapes, my pictures look so much more vibrant in Olympus Master compared to Lightroom. Is this a settings issue? or perhaps something else?
    Also.....
when deleting pictures from Lightroom, it asks me if i wish to delete from the hard drive or just remove from Lightroom, when i choose delete from hard drive, after it says its done, if i go look at the folder its still there :/.
any help would be apprieciated, I am a novice dslr user and still learning how to use the softwares out there

Are you shooting images in raw or jpeg mode?
I assume that Olympus Master 2 is the raw processing software bundled with your camera. If so, then you are asking why Olympus software renders pictures differently than Lr. This question has been asked (and answered) many times but it boils down to the fact that the Olympus default rendering could be far different than that chosen by Lr. Also, Olympus may embed proprietary information in the raw image useful to Master 2 but entirely unknown to Lr.
If you want Lr to operate more like Master 2, then create a Lr preset (with the appropriate adjustments -- likely a saturation boost), then apply this preset when importing.
Finally, the camera raw engine (ACR) used by Lr is noted for producing images more muted than that produced by software bundled with cameras. In my opinion this is a good thing since the default rendering that many cameras produce is not at all natural. But the powerful Lr develop module allows me to create any interpretation I choose. Including a head spinning contrast and saturation boost.

  • MBP mid '09 not reading internal hard drive

I have a Macbook Pro Mid 2009 recently updated to Mountain Lion.
    2.53 Ghz
    RAM 8 GB
    350 GB HHD
Shortly after (updating OS) maybe a day or so, my MBP froze. Applications would not open and programs were frozen. I was unable to force quit opened applications. I hard reset the computer and booted up to the gray screen with a folder and question mark. I ran disk utility to discover that it does not see my hard drive.  I don't hear the Hard drive spining either. I bought a new HHD Seagate 4500 RPM 250GB HHD and it didn't read that either when I ran disk utility.   So I took the new hard drive and old hard drive and put both in my friend's mid 2010 MBP and both hard drive worked (it read it). So I'm really puzzled after this point. I have also reset the SMC and NVRAM / PRAM with no luck.
So what do you guys think is wrong with my comp? Mother board or the wire to the hard drive, something like that?  Thanks for taking your time to read my post. I also took it to genus bar and they said I need a new hard drive and my hard drive failed. Good thing I didn't throw away my hard drive. lol

Update: I think I have found the problem after several hours of reading other fourms. It is the SATA cable that has failed most likely. I will try to obtain a new cable in a few days and update you guys if it fixes the problem. Apparently there are alot of cases of these cables failing in the mid 2009 MBP.

  • Mac not reading internal hard drive, running from external

I have a Macbook Pro, that stopped working on me.
After some tinkering around, I was able to boot up after it crashed, but only by removing the hard drive and accessing it through the USB ports.
    Two part question...
A- How do I see if the computer is recognizing the internal hard drive? (I purchased a new one and placed it in the unit)
B- How do I clone the old hard drive, now external, to the new hard drive?
I also was not able to partition the new hard drive yet
    thanks!

If the drive mounts through a USB, it should be OK.  The cable connecting the HD to the logic board inside the system may be faulty.  That service/part runs around $75 and can be had at the Genius Bar.  Or find other sources: https://www.google.com/#q=macbook+pro+hard+drive+ribbon+cable&revid=1133110092

  • DiskWarrior Preview Not Reading External Hard Drive -- Can't back up files

So I recently fell upon the grey screen with the folder problem. After some research I got disk warrior and ran it on my computer (which I got in September 2006). After it was finished, DiskWarrior told me that the disk was malfunctioning and therefore could not replace the old directory with the new directory. What I take this to mean is that I need to get a new hard drive or a new computer altogether.
Per the recommendation that I back up my files, I tried inserting my USB eternal hard drive, however it is not showing up on the DiskWarrior Preview screen (the one where you would be able to transfer files). I restarted the computer and redid the whole process, and the external drive did show up on the list of disks that I had the option of repairing. I chose to rebuild my internal drive, of course, but came back to the Preview window where I could not get the external drive to appear. How do I back up my files???
I will be able to stop by an Apple store this weekend, so I'd like to know if there is anything else I could do to save my computer, more specifically how I can back up my files in the case that something terrible happens to my data.
    Thanks
    - Liam

    Hi,
I was wondering if you ever resolved this issue as i am having exactly the same problem with my powerbook G4 17" With Leopard (i cant remember the exact version and now i have no way to check).
It recently would not boot up past the gray screen and after a while of the apple logo with the spinning bar it shut it self down again.
After going through all try to book from system disk) and getting pretty dismal results i have come to use disk warrior 4.1.
Now i managed to boot the machine from the disk and have run the rebuild option and after a couple of hours i was faced with the message that
"disk warrior has successfully rebuilt a new directory from the disk named macintosh HD" but then "THE NEW DIRECTORY CANNOT REPLACE THE ORIGINAL DIRECTORY BECAUSE OF A DISK MALFUNCTION"
This report then goes on to tell me that it is highly recommended that i back up all the data from the preview disk.
So this is where the problem lies, i can not get any external drive to in the preview window so that i can copy the information. The drives work just fine, have ample space but i just can not access them through preview window.
I did what was said above as well in restart the disk warrior process agian with the external drive already plugged in (with even an option to rebuild that) yet after rebuilding the internal harddrive again i can not see the external. The weird thing is i know that the machine recognises that it is there as i can save a pdf report to it yet when it comes to access through the preview window there is no such option.
Does anyone know what to do? Do i look for another programme or i could hook it up to another mac and perhaps it would recognise that as a disk to send to . I just need a viable option of getting my data from the internal drive to an external source so that i can re format the thing.
I can see it, i know its there yet i just cant figure out how to do it. Very frustrating.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Lightroom 5:  "Remove Photo" will not delete from hard drive

I just discovered that when I am using the "Remove photo" feature from the library, while the photo is removed from the catalog and "deleted", it remains on my external hard drive.  Is there a fix to this issue?  I did go to my external drive and create a file and then delete it.  I had read in other forums that this allowed Lightroom to find the correct place. This did not solve my problem.
    Thank you for any assistance.
    Karen

    Yes I do.
After I posted, I tried it again in a different file (I organize my photos
on my external drive by month and year).  In the month of August file, I
can delete in Lightroom and it deletes from my hard drive.  It appears to
only be happening in my September file, at least as far as I can tell now.
I created all of my file folders 2 months ago, so it isn't something I
    just did.
    Any thoughts?

  • New external hard drive froze while transferring info to new computer. Laptop does not read external hard drive. Went to Apple store and didn't work. Any suggestions?

Day 1. Went to Apple store because iMovie was not working. It kept shutting down. Prior to going to the store, I called Apple Support and deleted and reinstalled iMovie. Still did not work. Then I went to the Apple Store. After an hour it finally worked but when I got home, it didn't work AND my iPhoto application was missing. Tried to back up on external hard drive but it didnt work.
Day 2. Explained the situation again to Apple employee at Apple Store. I bought an external hard drive that employee recommended and picked out. I went home and backed up my computer on the external HD.
Day 3 (morning). Went back to Apple. Employee verified that my hard drive was backed up successfully. All my photos, music, and documents were successfully backed up. He was going to reinstall the operating system. He did that successfully. He showed me how to install the external HD info to the laptop. I went home and followed the directions. It was going to take about 2 hours. I kept monitoring the progress and everything looked good until....30 minutes remained. 30 minutes remained for a good 20 minutes. The ext hard drive stopped responding. I tried to canel but there were no buttons to push. I exited the program. I called apple support and they tried to walk me through it. My computer still was not recognizing that the exteranl HD was plugged in. I mad another trip to the Apple store and the emplyee confirmed that the extranal HD was not reading. He tried plugging it in to his computer and it still wasnt reading.
He did give me a data recovery number to call. I asked if Apple would cover the cost and he said no. I called then and was quoted $700-$2000 to recover the data.
Does anyone have any suggestions? When frustrates me more is that I followed every instruction and I did exactly what Apple told me to do. Now, ALL of my data is lost and Apple does not want to help.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do next? I need help. =*(

    Hi rkaufmann--
Thanks for the response.  I can say with confidence that that is not the issue.  I have at least 8 of these same WD external portable drives that are powered through their USB 3.0 cables, and I have never had problems with any of them.  Sometimes I connect them directly to my computer, and sometimes I use a powered hub.  Either way they work fine.  The drives with their own power source do not suit my needs.
My question is specifically whether anyone has seen an issue where sometimes they plug a drive in and it is not recognized but then it continues to work.  In other words, the question I'm posing to other users is whether it sometimes happens that they connect a drive and it simply doesn't show up, but then they disconnect and reconnect and it goes on working fine as it should.

  • Itunes not reading external hard drive correctly

I recently moved or at least attempted to move all my music from my old hard drive to an external hard drive.
My original plan was to have all my music on the external and have Itunes pathed to the external so whenever I have it plugged in, all my music would be in my library.  Obviously it wasn't that easy, at least not in my case.   Throughout the process I ended up losing a decent amount of my music which ***** but what can I do now.   My question is, how do I properly have Itunes read my external hard drive and have it show my music?   I have the path set to the folder in which my music is at but the issue seems to be that when I consolidated to transfer into the external, all the songs are in individual folders by artists.  I'm lost and don't know what to do.   If I drag the music folder to Itunes, the music stays on my library whenever the external is plugged in which is what I want.  But, many songs are doubled for some reason.
Any help would be appreciated as this is becoming very frustrtating, thank you.

  • Files not deleting from hard drive when I delete them from i-tunes......hel

I just upgraded to Vista and I reloaded my songs to i-tunes. I have many duplicates that I want to get rid of. I deleted and selected move to recycle bin but they are not being removed from my hard drive. Please can somebody let me know why.

iTunes will only remove (or ask) to remove) if the items are located in the iTunes music folder shown in iTunes prefs -> Advanced.
If the items are in that location and it is not asking, then click on *Reset all dialog warnings:* in iTunes prefs -> Advanced.
and selected move to recycle bin but they are not being removed from my hard drive. Please can somebody let me know why.
Likely it is a permissions issue with the iTunes folder. Mkae sure you have full Read/Write permissions to the iTunes folder and all contents.

  • Power Mac G4 400 MHz (AGP graphics) will not boot from hard drive

    I have a Mac G4 400 MHz (AGP graphics) Machine Model: PowerMac 3.1 CPU Type:PowerPC G4 (2.8)
When I try to boot from the hard drive I get the folder with the flashing question Mark. The Machine will start up from the OSX 10.4 installer disk.
The system was running OSX 10.4.9 fine. I began to have problems with the hard drive, so I replaced it with an old Maxtor 5T040H4 40Gig Apple branded drive that I had sitting around.
The drive is jumpered (r50) for Master/Single.
I erased the drive in the old G4 using disk utility and wrote all zeros. I then used my store bought Tiger 10.4 install disk to install 10.4 on the drive.
After restarting I still get the flashing question mark. If I leave the Install disk in the DVD drive the system will attempt to install again.
I have zapped the PRAM, pressed the CUDA button, removed the battery and let the system sit unplugged for over and hour and it still will not boot from the hard drive.
To test the drive I removed it and put it in a Granite Digital firewire enclosure and connected it to another mac. The drive shows up and the system appears to be installed correctly.
What am I forgetting to do? Does anyone have any suggestions.
    Thanks in advance.
    Wesley G.

Hi! If Tom's solution doesn't work I would reboot from the install disc and then partition the drive as 1 partition instead of erasing it. Sounds like the driver on the disk is too old and installing a new partition map should write a new driver to the drive that is compatible with Tiger. Other than that it is possible that the drive has a spin delay jumper enabled and the drive isn't spinning up fast enough and the computer isn't looking long enough for the drive. Tom

  • IPhoto read from hard drive

All my photos are on an external hard drive. Can't iPhoto just read the files on that drive rather than copying them to another location and calling it a library. Seems dumb to have copies of all Mt work at a secondary location.

Can't iPhoto just read the files on that drive rather than copying them to another location and calling it a library.
It can, but you might not want it to.
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
This is an attractive option for some users at face value, but it contains a significant number of issues that you might want to consider before making the decision to run a Referenced Library
    How to do it:
iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck the box at 'Copy items to the iPhoto Library'
Now when you import iPhoto makes an alias in the Library Package that points to the stored file. Note: iPhoto still creates a thumbnail of the image and it makes a Preview of edited photos inside the Library Package.
    Issues?
    1. You are responsible for file management. That's more work:
You must first move the files from your camera to the storage location before importing.
If you want to delete files then you must first trash them from iPhoto and then afterwards find them in your storage and trash them.
Thereafter, you cannot move the files on early versions of iPhoto at all, on iPhoto 08 and later you may move them on the same Volume or Disk. If you move them to a new volume or disk the aliases my break. If they are on an different volume and you move them the aliases will break.
    You cannot rename the files.
Migrating: moving to a new machine, moving the files to another disk are all a lot more complex.
    2. You gain no extra functionality from running a Referenced Library. Nothing. This is just storage. You still manage the files via iPhoto. You edit them with iPhoto or via iPhoto's External Editor setting, otherwise you're changes will not be available in iPhoto. You don't save  byte of storage space.
    3.  If you have the Library on one volume and the photos on another you if anything changes in the path to a file (Like if you upgrade your machine, move the files on the NAS or on to another one?) then the alias will break, and you'll have to repair it manually. For every photo in the Library. One at a time.
Why do you want to run a Referenced Library?
Because my photos won't fit on my HD?
You can run a Managed library from an external disk. Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
You're worried about accessing the files?
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
