Various hardware issues with Asus G73

Hello everybody,
First let me say that issue I'm experiencing is caused by hardware malfunction I need help diagnosing.
Since it has nothing to do with Arch (or any other OS for that matter), I hope this is the right place to post.
Now, let's get to the problem.
I have Asus G73-JW laptop. It's 'desktop replacement' machine from 2010 based on
Nehalem platform (i7-740QM @ 1.7GHz) paired with nVidia 460m and 8 GB of ram.
It has not so nice 17" 1080p screen and 750GB HDD and 60GB SSD as storage.
Few months ago I started playing Battlefield 3 on dual-booted Windows 7 and native Steam Team Fortress 2 on x64 Arch.
While playing those games weird things began to happen.
First, laptop started emmiting loud, extremely annoying high-pitched noise. After a while noise fades but fans start
running on full speed. Screen backlight flickers (as if it was a recording with an old camera) unless it's set to max
when picture appears normal. Keyboard becomes unresponsive. It works, but it's not enough to just press keys,
they need to be pressed for much longer than usual. Maybe for half a second or less, but enough to make keyboard
unusable. Keyboard backlight turns off if it was on (and vice versa) and can't be controlled with hotkeys.
At that time, I suspected this is somehow related to GPU since laptop was functioning perfectly normal unless in a
game or GPU benchmark. Even really CPU intensive tasks such as building CyanogenMod which drove CPU temperature
over 90C caused no issues. But after some time these sympthoms started showing regardles to GPU usage or system load,
which led me to recognising few more of them and making sure this is not software problem since it's exibited on Arch and
few other distros, Windows 7 and 8.
After laptop goes nuts, it can be normalized either by shutting down or suspending to ram.
During sleep few LEDs that are normally blinking will stay on. After they start blinking again everything will work normally after
waking up (for some time, that is) and it will be possible to wake it on any key. If LEDs are stuck, only power key works.
In the begining it took it few hours or more to become normal, but now 20-30 minutes is enough and same amount of time applies
for both powering up and waking from sleep. Even if laptop didn't 'calm down', it will be silent during wake up process, but fans will
kick in full speed right after. If power cable gets removed out while on rampage, keyboard and touchpad simply die. If I shut it down
without power pluged in, it won't be possible to turn it back on without waiting a while. Whether it's with or without battery, or running
only on battery power, makes no difference - fans keep on spinning as fast as they can.
Even though temperatures are completely normal - CPU in mid 40s, GPU somewhat hotter, I thought something that is not reporting
temperature to OS (chipset or whatever) might be overheating, so I took it apart. After cleaning everything thoroughly, changing
thermal paste and thermal pads, nothing changed besides temperatures which are few degrees lower now. While open, I took the
chance to look for anything that doesn't look normal, leaked capacitors, unsoldered components, but everything looked just fine.
I have googled my ass off, but I have been unable to find any similar reports for this or any other notebook.
As far as logs go, I don't think there is anything to give you except maybe kernel log.
I'm trying to diagnose problem myself (and, if possible, fix it) because everything that runs on electricity is so damn expensive here,
not to mention repair shop services and their prices. Warranty is long gone, and since laptop was bought on US Amazon, I'm not sure it
would have done me any good here in Bosnia.
I would really apreciate any help and if there is any useful info I didn't provide, please let me know.
Thanks in advance,
Šaran.

Since few days ago battery LED sometimes blinks red although acpi reports 100% full.

Warranty and support is only valid in the country of origin.  The only exception being the EU where a device bought in any EU country can get warranty or service in any EU country.
Warranty is determined by device (serial number), no documentation required.
Apple does not repair devices, they replace them.  For that reason, ensure the device is backed up and any pictures take with the device are copied off the device prior to going in for service.

No. The iPhone warranty is not international. You will need to have warranty service done in Oman.

This is not a hardware issue with the iPhone. Please insert another SIM card from a supported carrier or request that this iPhone be unlocked by your carrier. Please contact Apple for more information.

It looks like the iPhone is locked to a carrier that is not the one you are trying to use.
You need to determine which carrier it is locked to and then contact them to see if they are willing to authorise the unlocking of your iPhone.  As ManSinha mentioned, many carriers will only authorised the unlock if requested by the customer who had the contract with them for this iPhone.
Remember that only the carrier who owns the lock on your Iphone can authorise Apple to unlock the iPhone in their servers.  You need to contact the carrier or have the previous owner of the iPhone request the unlocking.

  • Hey, I'm having a hardware issue with my Ipod Charger.

Hello Apple community! I am having a issue with charging my 3rd Gen 64GB I Touch. I used to get an error where it wouldn't allow me to charge due to the accessory not being compatible to the i Touch (I used 3 different Apple Charger, Apple brand, etc) Now I can't charge it at all, its basically a broken Ipod. Im furious about this because I don't have a warranty despite this being a hardware issue. I went to look at Apple support but it said I had to pay $30 to call/email. I think thats ridiculous! I have an issue with my device and I should be able to call for FREE. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could get this expensive device fixed? I have no APPLE Store near me to go to.

    - Have you tried a reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Tried a different cable?
    - Looked at the dock connector on the iPod. look for abnormalities like bent or corrode contacts, foreign material and crack or broken plastic.

  • Hardware issues with boot camp?

I wasn't sure where to put this, as it's actually a hardware issue, but it does directly relate to my software.
I use Windows for gaming and for college work that is windows only. The issue I have is that the graphics card doesn't seem to want to register. Everything looks blocky and pixelated. When windows starts up, and it does the loading screen with the flag and the "Windows is starting...", the flag might as well be a 256 color image. When I run games, some look okay, but not like they should. Elder Scrolls: Oblivion looks okay when you're outside, but the coloring looks off, and the objects look like they have serrated edges. It's bad... And I've seen it on a normal PC.
For a machine that has a really nice updated graphics card, this mac should run anything. I have two gigs of ram, an ATI Radeon HD 2600, and a nice display. Not to mention, this machine picks up at 2.4 Ghz on an intel core 2 duo. Why are all my applications looking like they belong on a Windows 95 machine? I tried to upgrade the drivers, but it tells me it can't find an ATI card. I look in the system preferences for the windows, and it shows I have an ATI Radeon XT 2600. I read that the card is the same as the HD, but still the updates don't see the card.
Not to mention I keep getting system crashes that deal with the hal.dll file. I know that this is the hardware file in the system folder, so it makes sense that the problem would be due to the graphics card. I've already had to reinstall the system twice, and this last time I did a system a repair and it lost the paths to all my files. So all the programs were there, but none of them would run. Also, now I don't have access to my mac drive anymore. It lets me view it, but no trading files between machines. I've checked sharing already. Looks fine.
Anyone know what's going on here? And yes, I know about the little pixelated dots that people talk about. I haven't had them... And I am using boot camp 2.0 with the latest drivers. Didn't help much.
Running Windows XP SP2, fully updated.
    -Eric

Re installing windows works best if you erase and or format the disc first with disc utility in os x. I couldn't reinstall windows correctly and had simalar error untill I used macs disc utility first. I read your post all the way and I can't comment why the graphics are messed up though, sorry good luck

  • Hardware Issue with HP dv9000

Good morning, I'm joining this forum today to hopefully get some answers in regards to the following hardware issues I have with my laptop.  I own an HP Pavilion dv9000, and on 9/17/2011, both my Wifi and the CD-Rom stopped working, literally overnight.  Yesterday I took the system to one of the IT Staff members at work and he stated that their may be a hardware issue.  He stated that the Wifi adapter is not found within Device Manager even though it's enable within the BIOS; and with the CD-Rom, he said that he cannot Boot a CD from the drive, which led him to research any known issues with the hardware.  He also stated that based on his research with this model that there was a known hardware issue that had been acknoledged by HP, although he could not find and direct link to HPs website in regards to this issue, he did say that there were several blog postings stating such; check this link he sent me:  http://mattsblog.ca/2007/12/14/having-problems-with-your-hp-pavilion-dv6000-dv9000-or-presario-v6000...
My laptop is still prestine condition, never dropped and barely moved from my desk; it's pretty much still new looking.  I'd like to see about having this issue fixed, but my system is no longer under warranty, in fact, it's just outside of OfficeMax's extending warranty that I purchased with the laptop.
Any assistance with this matter is greatly appreciated.

I recently updated my computer and since then it hasn't let me play netflix saying it is a hardware issue. I'm not sure what to do.

    Have you tried (re)installing Silverlight?

  • Audio Hardware issues with premiere pro cc

I'm having some trouble enabling my usb mic.  Whenever I try to click the "enable track for recording button" in the audio track mixer I'm met with a message that states that I cannot record without adding a valid input device.  So I do preferences > audio hardware.  Here I'm met with two things 1) the ASIO Hardware section and 2) the Output Mapping section.  No where can I find a Input selection dropdown menu.  I've recently found my mic under the ASIO Hardware dropdown, but the issue is further drawn out.  When I return to the Audio Track Mixer I cannot press the "enable track for recording" button.  I'm not entirely sure what's happening here.  I'm using a Mac.

    hi Jim,
well it turns out that Premiere update 7.2.2. put my computer into disarray, and caused my multi-camera monitor to lag (about 6 seconds) behind my program monitor .. so my my multi-cam monitor (with my 2 or 3 camera feeds) would  be playing footage that is 6 seconds or so BEHIND what was playing on the program monitor.
    that's the gist of it..
anyway the fine folks at Adobe, talked me through the process of going back to premiere 7.2.0 and that fixed the issue.
i hope future updates resolve this issue so that i can get back up to the minute on my software
    thanks

  • Various transparency issues with conky.

So, I have some ring graphs for a bunch of things, they are all semi-transparent and they look pretty darn good, but the text I use is unreadable because of my background having multiple colors.
Well, after reading the conky config settings page I decided that

This is a script that generates rings for various things such as CPU and memory usage, current time and a bunch of other things
the reason I wrote it was because another, rather similar script, called haunted.lua was way too messy for easy editing.
Thus this script was born, the goal of this script is to keep it minimal and free from clutter.
The haunted.lua was written by Harshit, who in turn edited lua.lua originally written by londonali1010
The former of which had no license and the latter of which is under CC-BY-NC-SAv3.0
I will release this script (written from scratch, using a structure eerily similar to lua.lua) under the GPLv3
    Written by Andreas "Cube_" Björkman.

So... does anyone have any suggestions for how to keep the transparency of the rings while also having the text outlined?
Oh and if anyone can find why the terminal spews
    Conky: unknown variable
at me that would be most appreciated, I can't find the cause for this myself.
And yes, this is my own config that is somewhat derived from an existing conky config (once I get this to play nice it'll have more unique entries, until then I'll just keep to what I already have in there)
I do apologize for the messy looking lua script, it's still wip

Sorry, no-can-do. I've tried every last window type, results:
normal - works as expected (obviously aside from aforementioned issues)
desktop - log indicates that it's drawing to root window¹, nothing shows up on desktop.
override - log indicates that it's drawing to root window¹, nothing shows up on desktop

    So yeah, I've experimented with this for a week now and I still can't find the solution >.>;

  • I have heard that the iphone 5 has hardware issues with the lock button and sometimes the power button...is this a recurring problem or is it easily fixable?

Is this problem affecting most users? I heard that it usually takes abotu 2-3 weeks after getting a replacement that these problems might occur and I don't wanna shell out a lot of money only to have to constantly go to the apple store and get a new replacement regardless if it is free.

I currently have a defective lock/sleep button on my iPhone 5. After putting up with it for 3 weeks, I took it to an apple store. The "genius" told me that because I'm 50 days over my year warranty, I would have to pay $280 to get a replacement. They will not fix the problem. They can only give you a refurbished phone. BEWARE: the replacement is only free if the phone is still within the one year warranty or if you have an extended apple care. I'm still blown away on the fact that I payed $500 for a product that defected in a little over a year and be told by a condescending apple genius that I have to pay $280 to resolve the problem. My friends who have Samsungs and HTCs have 2 year old phones that work as well as the day they bought them. I had a blackberry for almost 3 years and had no issues at all, but a highly advanced, "well made" apple product barely lasted a year. My wife's iPhone 4S shuts off when the battery drops to 30%. And of course the guys at the Genius Bar say they can't help. I shouldn't have to pay for a replacement unless I did the damage myself. I've been an iPhone user since the first iPhone. And every year, I've had something break right after the warranty expires (failed audio jack on iPhone 1, failed earphone on iPhone 3G, failed home button on iPhone 4). It's getting really old spending a lot of money on cheap products and having to deal with the "better-than-you" swagger from the Genius Bar.

  • Audio issues with ASUS G750JX

    Hey Arch,
I'm having a bit of trouble with my audio and was hoping you guys could assist me with it/simplify it.
Incase no one reads all the way to the bottom, basically I'm wondering if theres a way of just using one audio system and not having to worry about the other.
Volume levels won't save no matter what I've tried so far, plus everytime the laptop gets turned on, the headphones level which controls speakers is set to 0
"HDA Intel PCH (Alsa mixer)" "Headphone" controls Bass, "Speaker" controls speakers, "PCM" controls something else as sound gets quieter when it's lowered.
If I plug headphones in, everything gets muted, although after unmuting audio is played through the headphones, however when the headphones are unpluged, the audio mutes again until I manually unmute each stream.
I'm unsure which programs use which audio system, be it Alsa mixer or PulseAudio
Gmusicbrowser - audio is controlled both by itself and by Alsa/Pulse it seems
Vlc - similar but seems to match what both Alsa and Pulse show
I've tried setting them to just use one audio system but it doesnt seem to work.
Below are what come up in the xfce4-mixer
    HDA Intel PCH (Alsa mixer)*
    HDA NVidia (Alsa mixer)
Playback: GK106 HDMI Audio Controller Digitial Stereo (HDMI) (PulseAudio Mixer)
Playback: Built-in Audio Analog Stereo (PulseAudio Mixer)*
*Both seem to control audio, "HDA Intel PCH (Alsa mixer)" master "somewhat mirrors" what "Playback: Built-in Audio Analog Stereo (PulseAudio Mixer)" does. Eg "Master" is lowered in "HDA Intel PCH (Alsa mixer)" it gets lowered in "Playback: Built-in Audio Analog Stereo (PulseAudio Mixer)" but doesnt exactly match it
    $lspci |grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset High Definition Audio Controller (rev 05)
01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GK106 HDMI Audio Controller (rev a1)
The following are packages installed relating to Alsa or Pulseaudio
    multilib/lib32-libpulse
    multilib/lib32-alsa-lib
    extra/libao
    extra/libcanberra-pulse
    extra/libpulse
    extra/pulseaudio
    extra/pulseaudio-alsa
    extra/alsa-lib
    extra/alsa-plugins
    extra/alsa-utils
    extra/zita-alsa-pcmi
*multilib packages are primarily due to having skype (don't think I've installed anything else from multilib)
I'm set to get updates from testing and community-testing
Side note - if anyone knows how to get the XF86Backlight keys working (for the actual backlight) that would be cool, currently i control the backlight with the xfce4 power manager plugin.
Thanks to who ever is able to help.

Oh man, this is driving me nuts. First I was having the loud "pop" in the speakers, apparently the sound subsystem going to sleep to save power, heavily discussed in these forums. I applied the 10.4.10v1.1 update and these loud "pops" seemed to have gone away, but what still remains is a soft "scratch" sound before and after almost every time the computer makes sound. Includes interface sounds in the finder, quicktime movies, almost everything. It seems to only happen on my line out, and the loudness of the "scratches" is constant regardless of the mac's volume setting.
I am mostly making music with this thing, so the scratches coming out of my studio monitor speakers is very annoying. Any idea, any workarounds, please help.
