Various iDVD '08 Problems

I have read the posts in this discussion group and I don't see anyone describing these types of problems. Perhaps you can help.
I have a large (4 GB) multi-slideshow (11) project with over 400 total slides. I built each slideshow in iDVD from the pictures in my iPhoto '08 Library.
While building the project, iDVD crashed twice and I had one kernal panic.
In rearranging the order of my slides for one of the larger slideshows, several small groups of slides were randomly (?) scattered throughout the rest of the slideshow. I didn't notice this until after I burned the DVD. I could have sworn the Preview was perfect for all of the slideshows before the burn.
Trying to burn the project to a DVD was problematic. There were no warning symbols on the DVD map of the project. The first burn ended in a "Multiplexor Error - during muxing preparation (Project Conversion)". Nothing was written to the DVD. The second try ended in a "Multiplexing & Burning Asset Parsing" error. Still nothing written to the DVD but somewhat further along than before. On my little iMac G5-1.8 these initial burns (with encoding) take on the order of 5 hours.
A call to AppleCare Support gave me a few suggestions. The first was to try Advanced > Delete Encoded Asset. This eliminated the background encoding that was probably messed up with all of my editing of the slideshows. It gives a fresh encoding of the project at the time of the burn. This allowed me to finally burn the DVD. But I can't claim victory yet. When I played the DVD on an external player, part way through the last slideshow, the transitions (Dissolve) from one slide to the next were lost and it just displayed a green screen for the entire transition. This was the last slideshow of all my pictures (all 400 of them).
My Project Info window gives me a 100% green bar for Quality at Best Performance encoding. Every line in the Media box has a check in the Status column. Steve from AppleCare suggested changing the encoding to High Quality. From other posts on this discussion board it looks like iDVD will make two passes for High Quality encoding. Would this double my encoding and burn time to 10 hours??? Another suggestion Steve made is to eliminate one of my slideshows, perhaps the last and biggest one. Any other suggestions?
Has anyone else run into these types of problems in iDVD '08? Is this typical for new software?
Thanks for your help,
Rich

Thank you SDMacuser and Jim2006 for your discussion thread. I hope you can still help me with this project.
Item:
When slideshows are sent to iDVD from iPhoto they are rendered out as movies, so they will take about twice as long to encode using two-pass. And since they can have motion, they will benefit from two-pass encoding.
Response:
I didn't create the slideshow in iPhoto and use the "Share > Send to iDVD" command. I built each slideshow within iDVD using the photos in iPhoto. I chose this method because dragging photos from a Finder window into iDVD significantly increased the file size of my project (from a few hundred KB to several hundred MB for the same number of slides). The one slideshow I did send to iDVD from iPhoto is several hundred MB and according to what you say above, it apparently was rendered as a movie before going to iDVD.
Questions:
Do you think this is where iDVD is having trouble with the large slideshow and the transitions for it (remember the green screen transitions)? Should I just pull the last slide show of 400+ slides and burn it as a separate DVD? All the other smaller slideshows (a couple were over 100 slides each) in the project were encoded fine with their transitions. It appears that iDVD is going to the iPhoto Library to grab each slide for the slideshows and then building the transition. For this project, the total is over 800 slides. Could that be the reason for the long encoding time?
Item:
What is taking so long and making the project so large is the transitions. To isolate the problem I suggest first burning this project without transitions to a disc image. If this still fails then just start removing slideshows/images until it works and then you will figure out which image is causing the problem.
Response:
I noticed in the progress window that transitions are encoded and tracked separately from other project items like menus and slides. But the transitions were encoded in parallel with other project items. I will try burning the project to disc image without the transitions and compare the times. But I really like the transitions between slides. They kind of take me back to the old days of a slide projector, screen and trays of slides.
Thanks again for your help,
Rich

  • Various E Mail problems: Junk Mail, Log Off, etc

I am having various and frustrating problems that are intermittant.
I have two incoming e mail accounts, one is IMAP and one is POP.
    1. Junk Mail. After having reset my junk mail settings as advised on this site just a few days ago, I am continuing to experience this problem. Messages that the systems "knows" is Junk Mail do NOT go to Junk Mail folder, but to the regular In box. It knows they are Junk Mail because the Tab for changing the message at top of screen says "Not Junk", which means it thinks it is JUNK. They why won't it go into Junk Mail folder?
    2. When I try to delete these messages one by one in In box, the computer "freezes" and takes forever to delete the messages. The In box counter on left hand side of the screen does not decrease as I delete messages, but takes a long time (minutes) to catch up with the deletions.
    3. When receiving certain e mail from specific recipients, the system intermittantly says "message not dowloaded from server, you need to take this account on line". Well. it IS online! Again, this does not happen all the time, but often enough and from the same e mail recipients) that it is very frustrating.
    4. Oftentimes when I try to shut down, I get the dreaded spinning color wheel, only to have to force quit. This is a lengthy process, and then I lose all of the deletions that I have tried to make to my Inbox.
Are all of these problems somehow related? Cumulatively, they are very frustrating. I never had these kinds of issues with Windows Mail apps. Uuughh!
Thanks for reading and any assistance.

There appears to be a problem with the index.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and ensuring that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see any other “Envelope Index”-named file there, delete it as well.
    4. Move the “IMAP-” account folder to the Trash. Note that you can do this with IMAP-type accounts because they store mail on the server and Mail can easily re-create them. DON’T trash any “POP-” account folders, as that would cause all mail stored there to be lost.
    5. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index — Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
    6. As a side effect of having removed the IMAP account folder, that accounts may be in an “offline” state now. Do Mailbox > Go Online to bring it back online.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.
    <hr>
If the problem persists, what are your Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors > Junk settings, particularly for the IMAP account?
Also, what have you done to “reset [your] junk mail settings as advised on this site”? This is what I’d suggest:
    1. Go to Preferences > Junk Mail, disable junk mail filtering, then enable it again. This resets the rule that governs what the junk filter does.
    2. Choose either Training or Automatic mode (it doesn’t matter) and leave the other options checked. Click Advanced to see how the junk filter rule is defined now if you want, but don’t touch anything there.
    3. Reset the junk filter database (Preferences > Junk Mail > Reset).
    4. Open Window > Previous Recipients and get rid of any addresses that you don’t want Mail to treat as legit.

  • IDVD 08 - problem with scene selection tabs not working after "burn"

I have a movie that is about an hour long (made in iMovie08 using mostly still photos). I wanted to have "chapters" -- but with that option gone, I used the Scene Selection option in iDVD08. This created menus with 15 scene selection buttons (I chose every 4 minutes). The menus were automatically created by iDVD and I did nothing to change them, except to type in scene info (two-three words).
The buttons all worked fine on the computer, and I burned a DVD. The DVD worked great in my VCR player. I'd select Play Movie and it would go. I'd select Scene Selection and I'd get the menus for that. But when I'd highlight one of the scene selections and "enter" (select) -- it wouldn't go to that scene. I could go back and forth between menus, and could move around and highlight the scene buttons, but selecting would not start the scene to play. The movie played fine from start to finish, and the other remote features worked (stop, pause, menu, etc.).
I went back to iDVD and chose a different theme (thinking maybe I'd inadvertently done something to mess things up. The only thing I did differently in addition to the new theme, was to add two small movie clips - and I rearranged the buttons on the menu (dragging) to get them positioned where I wanted them. So my first menu says "Play Movie". The second menu has: Play Movie, Scene Selections, Little Movie 1, Little Movie 2. Everything worked greated in iDVD. Then I created a disk image to view using DVD Player (rather than waste another DVD). Same problem -- only worse. This time I couldn't even highlight Scene Selection to get to the scenes' menus.
Any thoughts on why I'm not able to get the "Scene Selection" buttons to work after a burn? Am I missing a step somewhere in iDVD?
    Thanks.

I am not sure, but does your post concerning the problem, that all Remote Control function will work properly within iDVD'08 but after burning the DVD absolutely not with the RC of your set top DVD player connected to your TV?
    If this is it:
Meanwhile I could figure out - after many nights of not been very productive and only working out on all the iDVD'08 problems - that **ALL** of the *7.0 Themes* have a major problem in generally.
The following points are concerning iDVD'08 using any of the 7.0 Themes:
    - Complete deep freeze of your Mac under Leopard when rendering/coding/burning a movie which has chapters and you use movies instead of still images in drop zones. (LeopardiDVD087.0Themes)
    - Functions on remote control of your set top DVD player are not working correctly when making a movie with chapters. This is generally on Tiger and Leopard the same problem using iDVD08 with any of the 7.0 Themes.
    Quick and dirty workaround:
You may avoid this if you simply use a 6.0 Theme or lower version of the Themes.
But this is of course not the clue...
It is VERY DISAPPOINTING, having software at such a low quality level deliverd by Apple. And somehow it looks like they DO NOTHING against it. No statement, no excuse, they really remain silent.

  • IDVD burning problem, resolved!

    Hello all.
I just ran into a fascinating problem with iDVD, and thankfully found a solution.
My father has been working on creating a DVD with 8 decades with of family still photos.
We've been through various versions, and issues, but all had gone relatively smoothly until we thought we had finished the editing. On what we hoped was the final burn, we received an error saying the DVD could not be burned. I tried again, and received the same error, a numeric code which I found discussion on via Google.
What is interesting is that when I saved a disc image, it was clearly larger than a DVD, yet iDVD did not indicate this was a problem. Weird.
Then, to reduce the length (and therefore the size), I switched to fixed intervals in the slideshows, rather than fitting the content to the music we had selected.
The moment I did this, iDVD seemed to recognize the DVD was too large and would not fit. For instance, Command-I showed red, indicating it was too large, and when attempting to export, I received an error message.
This, despite the fact that the length of the DVD was less than it had been previously, when iDVD seemed happy to burn it, then produce a meaningless error.

For a single layer DVD you can have a maximum 2 hours movie on the disc, including duration of menus, if set in Best Quality.
You can check to see if menus are not too long, if the movie (slideshow) is less than 2 hours.
    And welcome to discussions!

  • Photo quality from Aperture to iDVD output problems

What is the best option for burning a simple slideshow to a disc for viewing with a DVD player. I have tried several ways resulting in a disc that does play without problem but the quality of the photos is very poor, nothing even close to the preview in iDVD itself. My settings in Aperture is for high quality previews, I believe it is the previews that iDVD uses. I'm not sure of the correct settings for iDVD. Any suggestions or helpful links would be appreciated.

As I just told another poster in the iDVD Forum:
DVDs are LOW resolution devices by today's standards. An NTSC DVD image is 640x480 pixels (768x576 pixels PAL). This is about 0.3 megapixels!!
If you want to make a HD format disc, a 854x480 image is squeezed into 640x480 when a DVD is made.
When (and if) Blu-ray discs become readily available, things will get better.

  • IDVD audio problems

out of 25 dvds 3 work properly. My problems now are: the movie plays fine and then in sum spots my audio sounds garbled, I've tried different DVDs with same results, some work some don't. I have set the properties to encode "professional" with same resluts. I just need one good copy so i can take it somwhere else to burn a lot.

As I said, the setting in is iDVD preferences, not a project setting.
Go to the iDVD menu, and select Preferences.
Click on the 'Advanced' gear wheel icon.
There is a Preferred DVD burning speed setting drop down list, reduce the speed.

  • IDVD having problems "during multiplexing/burning"

    Help please:
iDVD is not burning DVDs for me.
it goes through the whole process seemingly fine, then at the end shows the error message: "problem during multiplexing/burning".
    I have a G4 emac. 800 Mhz 10.3.9
external Lacie dvd burner (that burns fine on wife's imac)
I was having this problem earlier, then erased the hard drive to start clean. Didn't seem to help.
I upgraded the Lacie driver, etc too.
    thoughts?
    R

Ah then if Toast has a connection issue and iDVD is having issues when burning, it would appear that your issue is unrelated to iDVD and instead a system or hardware problem. Unfortunately that might be too hard to diagnose here in this forum, at least not with a ton of non-iDVD related back and forth questions and answers.
Did you play the disc image on your computer to see if the titles made it into the disk image? My guess if they didn't make it onto the DVD blank, then they are not in the disk image either, although maybe they were?

  • Idvd burning problems during rendering/encoding

I have made several attempts to burn a dvd and when it gets to "step2: Menu and slideshow redering and encoding..." it never goes anywhere. If I cancel the process I get and error "error during rendering/encoding. there was an error during rendering/encoding of the menus/slideshows. Burning process aborted." The project is a 4 minute slideshow of pictures (jpegs) with one itunes imported song. The entire project was created in idvd and is no larger than 200megs. I have tried to burn this project on 3 different macs (2 G5s and a G4 powerbook) and they all have the same error so it must mean that I am doing something wrong. I have previewed the slideshow and it has no problems and am burning DVD-R's (tried a few different ones).

    with one itunes imported song
Was this a iTunes Store purchased song?

  • IDVD burning problem

I burned a DVD off of iDVD using a Memorex DVD+R. It burned successfully and then I inserted it into my Mac Mini, it spit it out, I inserted it into my Macbook Pro and it said I had inserted a blank disc. Does anyone know what the problem may be? The disc im hoping and not the burner I have. Thanks in advance!

Your SuperDrive may be too old for DVD+R. Use DVD-R. Verbatim preferred. Office Depot and Best Buy stock those near me.
I only use DVD-R. More compatible with players.

  • IDVD Burning Problem...Pixels and Vibrating Image!!!!!

I have a 104 minute project that I'm burning in iDVD (exported from FCP Pro). Every time I play it back after burning, I notice the same scene (about midway through the project) is pixelated and the picture "vibrates" like crazy. I've already re-burned it about 5 different times, and the same thing happens with each disc.
Then, I've isolated the problem by only burning that particular scene onto a disc...no pixels, no "vibrating".
I then went back and re-burned the entire film again...same pixels, same problem in the same scene. What's going on?
I'm using Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R discs...I've set the burning speed to Professional Quality and the burn speed to 8x...I've chosen a 6.0 them (Road Trip)...and, Im burning directly to the DVD-R disc.
Why am I getting this strange problem? Please help!!!!

Well, you're using highly regarded DVD-Rs. I would create a disk image and burn it at 4X or slower. You can test the disk image to see if the problems exist before burning.
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save as Disc Image...
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • IDvd 5 problem on Intel Macbook!

I am having problems running iDVD 5 on Intel Macbooks. iDVD 5 loads up, the themes show up in the side tray and the music plays. However, the themed "images and drop zones" are not visible in the main window.... in its place, only a black background with the word "Travel cards" on the Travel theme, "Memories" on the Memories theme, etc, etc.
I've deleted every reference to iDVD (packages, plists, aliases, etc.) Emptied trash, rebooted, reinstalled and repaired permissions.

    Good suggestions.
All updates in OS, DVD and QT done.
Oddly, if I dig down and open any theme's "package contents" the background image (tif) and other components can be opened and viewed. So strange.

  • Idvd slideshow problems

I created a slideshow in iDVD using many photograps from a recent vacation. I used audio from itunes and it all looked flawless in the preview. When I burned the slideshow dvd the music was garbled and jumpy and some of the photographs were superimposed upon one another. Also, other clicks and visual disturbances happened throughout while viewing and ultimately my dvd player just stopped playing it.
    Yikes! Any ideas what happened?

Music and iDVD-built slideshows have had problems at times, at least in iDVD5.
Some users have pasted thier music together in garageband instead of using playlists.
As for the movement/uneveness, I have no idea.....maybe if you fix the sound it will fix the duration?
Also try using "Save as Disk Image" and preview that before burining the save image with Disk Utility. This is fully encoded, so it is much better than iDVD's "preview"

  • IDVD music problem

I exported a slideshow from iPhoto to iDVD and have problems with the music being distorted.

  • Burning DL iDVD project -Problems!

Hi All, could do with some advice here!
I have used iMovie since the get-go, and all later versions and iDVD!
Have happily done many projects but this latest DVD project (a friends wedding) has been the biggest to date.
Over 140Gb of raw footage and photos of a big wedding.
Months of editing and the job is finished.
    All is well.
It took over 7.5hrs of final rendering on my intel and I ended up with a 7.41Gb final burn (to a dual-layer disk!)
I rendered and burnt in one go as advised by Apple AND ALSO separately after rendering a disk image!
Both will play to a point on my Sony surround TV system player but surprisingly not at all with my cheap testing TV player (which usualy PLAYS everything!)
ALL plays OK via the Macs DVD s/w player so I know the burn and image file is OK too.
I have burnt this via iDVD and also via Toast 8.1 and now also via Disk Utilities 'burn image' feature but get the same results!.... most will play but further into the DVD it won't (assuming this is where the data is on the 2nd layer!..... by the way i also have some DATA---pics/screensaver etc--- on the disk so there is NOT just an audio/video folder)
I have now burnt this 4 times and get the same results. I am using Datawrite 8.5Gb DVD_R DL disks...... is the disk the problem?
I have the Internal matshita DL burner and also a Freecom Firewire DL burner, (tried both!) and plenty of space!
I have made dozens of DVDs on SL disks with no problem!
I know what I m doing with the Apps and the Mac it just doesn't seem to burn correctly to a DVD?

Sounds like you are doing things correctly except for your choice of medias maybe. May be a media issue (not sure) but it's worth trying out. Try Verbatim or Maxell instead (just a suggestion).

  • Various Premiere CS4 problems on Windows 7

My job is to edit weekly videos for a college. They've provided me with a Windows 7 computer and Adobe CS4. My source material comes from shared servers. For the past few months, everything worked smoothly. In the past couple of weeks, I've had various problems with Premiere that aren't consistent.
    1. Sometimes the playback and controls begin to lag just before the program crashes.
    2. Sometimes audio clips from one source will suddenly be mute on playback, even though the waveform on those clips is displayed. This also keeps exports from being successful (the log says "Error Compiling Movie - Unknown error").
    3. Sometimes jpegs or png files I have superimposed can't be found when I open the project file, resulting in the "Media Offline" box in their place.
    4. Even when none of the above is happening, exporting the video as an AVI results in choppy audio that then cuts out when it reaches the clips mentioned in 2.
Help please? As I said, not all of these issues consistently happen, but at least one is always there.
