Various sources of video and how to handle them...

First and foremost we use Final Cut Studio HD... our mac is one of the last Power PC models I think...anyway on to the issue.
After showing a new editor our setup today he came to the realization and asked something that I've been wondering for a long time...
There has to be a better way...but is there really?
First our setup is kind of unique. Not optimal. We don't get all our footage from a dv camera. We get footage fed from the studio to the mac via a AJA IO-LA capture card... we capture in 8 bit uncompressed over composite cable. We also capture video from a Beta cam SP deck also in 8 bit uncompressed. Thats fine as we get plenty of stuff that route and we don't have to render anything but overlays from Live type (although I have a question about that as well).
However we're losing hours each day watching the render bar because the bulk of video we use for B-roll and stories comes via satellite into a server computer. The files are in mpeg2. We convert them to DV (because every option on mpegstreamclip produces the same results) and DV is easy and fast for conversion. Why convert from perfectly good mpeg2s? FCP Won't even acknowledge that the files have audio unless you convert them into something you have to render on the time line.
So what can we do? How do we avoid the rendering we endure daily? I've been plugging away at it for a long while now... but finally talking to another editor (I'm the only one here at the company) kind of cemented something thats been annoying me for a long while.
How can I do this so that I don't have to edit, render, edit, render... Other programs (namely Adobe) allow multiple file types on the same time line. Sure you have to render to play out a file or export but you don't have to render just to hear whats being said or see whats going on.
Is it just a setting I've got wrong or haven't turned on? I'm fairly unfamiliar with mac's and this stint at work dealing with issues like this isn't exactly endearing macs or FCP to me...
So hopefully some of the more experienced folks around here can help.
Other potential issues would be the live type files and graphic overlays? Is there a setting that would let us preview them in real time as they play? It doesn't have to play perfectly and I realize I have to render them to play out or export. But surely there is a way to just put it on the time line as an overlay over video (even video we don't have to render) and watch roughly or exactly what we want without waiting the 5-7 minutes for the 30 second section of the show to render.
And one last issue: Despite hard drives that pass speed tests with flying colors (both our internal sata drive and our external sata array) we can't Print to tape from our timeline without first exporting the time line into a huge quicktime file. If we just play it out we end up with dropped frames all over the place. Regardless of having all the files on the same hard drive and having everything rendered. I think this problem stems from having the files being rather large (8 bit uncompressed) as it plays fine it just likes to stop about 6-10 times over the course of a 30 minute time line saying dropped frame. I've gone over the various fixes for dropped frames and none help or fix the issue...the only thing that works is exporting our 30 minute show into a 30+ gig quicktime file...which makes archiving really really hard.
We produce 2 30 minute news shows every day that are seen syndicated all over the country... So time is of massive importance to me as I'm the only editor and work every day... if the mac drops a frame or rendering throws us off time it is my fault and my issue to fix. Our deadlines aren't flexible and having random issues with all of these issues has put a serious crimp into what all I and we can accomplish in any given day.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...anything you see that seems strange please ask as I said earlier I'm unfamiliar with macs outside of work and my dealings with FCP here.

As an editor I started out using adobe at home... then when I moved into professional editing I started with an old copy of Avid on a 5+ year old mac... After doing that for over a year we moved to this FCP system... After my boss has spent the money on this system I really have trouble seeing me convince him to drop enough cash for a PC system... although I'd be right at home on it.
One query: you are using the Kona to capture 8-bit through composite?
No... we don't use the Kona... We use the AJA IO-La... different than a Kona because we originally got that one... although moved (I think) up to the model we currently use because it was supposed to help in real time stuff.
But we do capture through composite (The whole office is wired for it...) rather than anything better.

i have 2 apple ids and I was told I can only use one and I will lose all of the items I have purchased under the one I want to delete.  Is there any way to transfer the info over to my other Apple ID?

You won't lose media purchased with your IDs.  Just authorize your computer for each ID in iTunes under Store>Authorize This Computer.  Then sign into the iTunes store using the ID you want to use for your purchasing in Store>Sign In.  What you may have heard is that your computer can only be associated with a single ID every 90 days.  (It becomes associated with an ID when you enable Automatic Downloads in iTunes>Preferences>Store, download previous purchases for an ID or subscribe to iTunes Match.
Purchases can't be transferred between IDs.

10 annoying issues with the Sony Xperia Z2, and how to fix them
    http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/xperia-z2-problems/
I found this article by @digitaltrends on Twitter as I'm researching the Sony Xperia Z2. I hope these issues have been address, especially WiFi dropping. I'm interested in the Z2 because of the Noise Canceling feature, now I will have to do more research to find out which phone is more stable (even though it's a software thing).
Can anyone with xperince with Z1, Z2, Z3 which they feel is the most stable for daily usage and heavy videoing projects? Realiability being the key?

I have the Z1 and have no issues at all - I find that article a load of tosh, How can something be an issue if the owner hasn't read the manual and as an example turned on Tap to wake or are using a 3rd party charger and wonder why charging takes a long time - These are not issues with the phone merely issues with the owner

When I open iPhoto 9.2.1 it says that my library needs to be upgraded but when I upgrade the library I am trying to open (33 GB worth of pictures from 2006) the new application says it cannot read the files and how to find them on the system to reimport?! and then I'd like to erase the original files since the space requirement is huge!!!! Why is upgrading software iPhoto such a pain. I've gotta get a presentation done and all I get for my money is roadblock!!!

hello, it sounds like the library is damaged.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • If I donwload e-books from various e-book retailers and want to back them up on an external hard drive without losing the format, do I need a special hard drive?

If I download e-books from various e-book retailers and want to back them up on an external hard drive without losing the format, do I need to know anything special?

I just looked into this as I was moving my iPad to a new computer for synching.  With no thanks to Kobo for any really useful information on their help site (this discussion was the most useful info I found), I think the following may address your issue with respect to Kobo.
    1. There is not easy or official way to back up Kobo books from your iPad.
    2. Kobo keep track of your personal library.  Go to the Kobo website (Kobo.com) and sign in to your account.  On the very top line is "My Library".  That contains (or at least Kobo says it does) everything you have ever bought from Kobo.  Kobo say that you may download any of this content to other devices you own at no charge.
    3. I synched my iPad to the new computer.  According to Apple, that will delete all my data as the apps are re-installed from the new compute.  While all my apps got moved around from the order I previously had (many thanks Apple), all my books are still there together with my bookmarks etc.  Looks like this did nothing to change any Kobo data.
While I do not like the idea that I cannot create a backup on my main computer, it is probably safer in the long run that there is a backup at Kobo.  After all, I could lose all my equipment in a fire or something, and then personal  backups would be of little use.

  • How many types of Queues exists and how to identify them.

    Hello
can anyone say How many types of Queues exists and how to identify them.
What does R3R* and CSA* stands for.
    Regards,
    divya

    Hi Divya,
The queues R3* and CSA* that you have specified are qRFC queues. qRFC queues are data queues which transport data to and fro different systems.
There are also the tRFC queues which are triggered whenever you make RFC calls to connect to another system.
Queues with prefix R3AD* - for delta download from R3->CRM
Queues with prefix R3AU* - for data upload from CRM->R3
Queues with prefix R3AR* - used to transfer data during request load from R3->CRM
Queues with prefix R3AI* - for initial load from R3->CRM
Queues with prefix CSA* - these are validation object specific queues used for processing/persisting data in CRM tables in a serialized manner. E.g. CSABUPA* for business partner,CSA_ORDER* for sales order etc.
You can administer and monitor the queues in trax. SMQR,SMQS.
Hope this helps you! Pls. do not forget to reward me some points.
    Regards,
    Sudipta.

  • Import problems and how to handle a bad crash

    Hello,
I am working on a system that I "inherited" because I am the only person left who has any idea about how it is supposed to work. :(
    Configuration:
    Oracle Base Version: 9.2.0.1.0 & OUI patch 2.2.0.2.20 & Oracle Patch 9.2.0.3.0
    Operating System: Windows 2000 Server
    Situation:
The SCSI controller on the mainboard failed taking the primary hard drive drive with it and damaging the HDD controller for the secondary drive. Thankfully I was able to bring the secondary drive back up online and get to the mirror which I immediately copied to a backup location. Unfortunately getting the mirror drive to be bootable under server2K has not been successful so I am focusing on recovering the data at this point.
    Problem #1:
Incredibly Rare backups of the database have been made and I have the backup files but one of the backup files (the most recent one) is corrupted. During import via the DBCA interface I get a "invalid EXT descriptor signature" message when it is unpacking the files. From my own research, this appears to be a screwup on the part of SUN and how they implemented some things via Java.
    Request #1:
Does anybody know how to fix this import issue with the backup files? (It will get me almost 2 years worth of data... remember.... Incredibly Rare backups...)
    Problem #2:
There is still about 10 months worth of data that is sitting in the database from the last corrupted backup. I have a copy of the entire C:\Oracle directory from the mirror drive so the raw data is available to me.
    Request #2:
Is there a way to import or merge this data with a working backup file (from 2005)? I'm under the assumption that 'overlay and pray' is not an option :)
    General Information:
The original Oracle server is part of a small domain that was setup to perform a dedicated task. I am currently performing the recovery efforts on a dedicated server setup at home which models the software configuration of the original server that died. I can import a backup file from 2005 without any issues and the OraDim & sqlnet files don't report any errors. I have no trouble accessing or manipulating the data via the Enterprise Management Console or SQL+.
Please forgive me if some of this is posted to the wrong section.
Thank you in advance for any advice and/or help!
    Jeff Beasom-

What you have been given is a toy.
I call it a toy because infrequent backups, inadequate training, and an antique unpatched database clearly indicate that your management has not taken this seriously.
It is time for someone to act like a professional and that appears to mean you.
Forget this forum, open an SR at metalink, and follow Oracle's support advice.
If your management has not paid for a support contract ... either they purchase one in the next 48 hours or ... update your resume and get out of there while you still have the skills to do so.

  • Confused about CLASSPATH and how java handles import statements...

    Hello,
I must admit I don't get it. I read the articles about setting CLASSPATH etc. but I still wonder:
If you use an import statement, what does the compiler do? I.e. where does it look for the specified classes? I find it confusing because I see in different locations different .jar files:
    C:\jdk1.3.1_03\lib\dt.jar
    C:\jdk1.3.1_03\lib\htmlconvertor.jar
    C:\jdk1.3.1_03\lib\tools.jar
    and also
    C:\jdk1.3.1_03\jre\lib\i18n.jar
    C:\jdk1.3.1_03\jre\lib\rt.jar
    C:\jdk1.3.1_03\jre\lib\jaws.jar
    C:\jdk1.3.1_03\jre\lib\sunrassign.jar
Can someone explain me what the purpose is of these files?
And why do I have the same contents in
    C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3.1_03\lib
    and in
    C:\jdk1.3.1_03\jre\lib
    Why is that?
    Thanks for answering my questions!
    -mike

Thanx for the answers, but I still wonder, everyone
here says I need to set the classpath, but I don't.Probably because your classes are already in the class path. The compiler/jvm also look for classes by themselves not just in jar files, when just a directory is supplied in the class path. And a period (".") is a valid directory.
Programs importing different classes compile with no
problem. So what's up with that?
Presumably you are referring to your own code - because they are in the class path.
Second, I still don't understand why the runtime needs
the .jar files. The runtime uses classes, like String, that have to come from somewhere.
This would also mean that end-users
need to set the classpath to the .jar files in their
JRE directory to be able to run programs that import
classes from these .jars. But this is not true, right? No it is true. The end-users will have to set the class path. There are variations on this which make it seem like no class path is set. For instance applets in a browser are java but the end-user does not need to set a class path. That is because the browser knows how to download classes/jars and how to set it up so it uses them. (Actually it uses a class loader, but that is probably more information that you need.)
Because if I make some nice classes myself and import
them, how can I expect my end-user to install these
classes and make a classpath for them? That would be between you and you end-user.
First installation is not part of java. For installation you will have to find something outside of java to accomplish the goal.
Additionally how the class path gets set is OS specific. Java does not deal with that. You will also have to find some way to deal with this (most likely part of the installation.)
There are also variations on this. For example the browser example I gave above. Or using the ext directory. Or creating an executable jar. Or simply setting the class path.
In my understanding it should only be needed in the JDK, not
in the JRE. True or am I mistaken?Mistaken. The class path is needed in the JRE as well. You will need to set it.
