Various Windows 7 issues
Hi, I have various problems on my system (W7 HOME 64-BIT), one of which is random explorer craches (which is the most frustrating). Others issues are : some exe won't run any more when I double-clic on them, others ones create an 'Access violation'' message..
I performed a sfc /scannow command and Windows found corrupted files but was unable to repair them. I tried in safe mode too with same results.
I tried to analyse some dmp files via the Windows debugging tools but i'm not sure if it was correctly executed since some symbol files weren't found. I also tried to update my drivers as suggested on forums (24 of them are outdated) but after a reboot,
i got a blue screen so had to perform a system restore. Now my system is back but with the same problems.
I was about to try the verifier command (Driver Verifier Manager) but had to cancel when I read it can cause many crashes to the system. I would take any advices as i'm completly clueless at the moment.
Here's the dump analysis about explorer :

Both of these were related to memory corruption. We both need the DMP files and need you to run driver verifier to find the underlying issue.
Please follow our instructions for finding and uploading the files we need to help you fix your computer. They can be found here
If you have any questions about the procedure please ask
These crashes were related to memory corruption (probably caused by a driver).
Please run these tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.
If you are overclocking (pushing the components beyond their design) you should revert to default at least until the crashing is solved. If you don't
know what it is you probably are not overclocking.
Since it is more likely to be a driver please run verifier first.
1-Driver verifier (for complete directions see our wiki here)
If verifier does not find the issue we can move on to this.
2-Memtest. (You can read more about running memtest here)
If you cannot boot after enabling verifier reboot into safe mode

I can't eject ("files in use by another application") Windows/Vista Issue?
OK... so in the grand scheme of things, this really is NOT the end of the world... but it sure is super-annoying!! This is my first every Apple product (took a while to get on the bandwagon) and I was hoping for more stability and ease of use... I've called AppleCare several times and they can't help me figure this out... according to them it's a Windows/Vista issue (which DOES seem likely). I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on a Dell Dimension E521.
Here's how it goes... I plug my iPod in, which opens up iTunes and it syncs fine. I wait until the top of iTunes says "sync complete" and the face of the iPod simply says "Connected". Then I click on the "eject" button next to the iPod listing in iTunes. It pauses for a moment, then I look down and the iPod suddenly has those syncing, circular arrows, moving again and it says "Synchronizing- do not disconnect". And then a few moments later, iTunes gives me a pop-up that says " XXXX ipod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application"
So obviously, something else is connecting to the iPod and preventing me from ejecting it using iTunes, but I have not been able to figure out what it is!
Since it's something on my machine, I have tried the following:
- shut down AntiVirus (TrendMicro Internet Security 2008)
- turned off Windows Firewall
- went through all the programs running in the task bar and turned them off
- opened up Task Manager and turned EVERYTHING else I could see off
None of the above have made any difference. The workaround that Apple gave me was to go into Computer and then right click on the listed drive and select "Safely Remove" which usually works (the times it doesn't work, it gives a similar message saying the device was being used by another application and can't be removed, try again later). But 90% of the time it works.
I use that or the Eject option when I right click on that drive (not sure the difference, they seem to do the same thing). The workaround works, but I'd sure LOVE to get iTunes to be able to eject my iPod!!
Here's what I've done regarding this iPod and iTunes:
- reset the iPod
- restored the iPod
- uninstalled and re-installed iTunes
- selected and unselected the various things I'm syncing (currently: Music, TV Shows, Podcasts, Photos) to see if it was one of them causing the issue
NONE of the above has made any difference (and I've done each about 2-3 times, ZERO exaggeration).
I've called into AppleCare about half a dozen times now, hoping to get that one brilliant tech that knows more than the others... but no luck yet... so I thought I'd try this forum to see if one of the brilliant posters here can help me sort this out.
PLEASE- ANY help you can provide (or even just point me in the "right" direction of how to determine this) would be GREATLY appreciated!!
Thanks so much in advance,
SCI am using windows Vista and having this problem also (not exactly, but iTunes gives pop-up that "files are in use"). Acting a suggestion from another answer in this thread, I clicked on Computer and selected eject...windows did warn me that the device was in use, but also gave me a CONTINUE button, which I clicked and it was ejected...had to go back to iTunes and eject the iPod there also, but it did eject

We have a 10 person office - all either use Acrobat XI or Reader XI. One person is on Windows 7. The rest are on Windows 8 (not 8.1). I say this because I thought it was a Windows 8 issue, but having the same problems on the Windows 7 machine. We are all having problems opening pdf's sent to us from other firms. This has increased in frequency over the past two months. We've checked with the various firms, and their other clients are not having problems. Some pdfs open but with a lot of missing content and strange formatting, others won't open at all. There are different error messaged depending upon the doc. Some are regarding the fonts, for example "can't extract the embedded font...." Others are "insufficient data" errors. There are more, but for purposes of keeping this short, I won't include them. Another unrelated issue is that we are having trouble printing excel files to pdf. The files end up with bad formatting. I've worked with adobe "chat" support, our IT consultants with no resolution. I also haven't found any similar "known issue" online Would very much appreciate any assistance. Thank you
The font embedding can be a problem if not done and you are trying to view the PDF and do not have the font on your machine. Acrobat will often try to find a replacement, but it is not always a good choice. Sometimes the "Use Local Fonts" button can be changed in state to resolve some of the viewing issues.
If you are trying to copy or export info, then it is important that you have the fonts on your system. Otherwise, the message you are getting about embedded fonts would not be showing up.
As for Excel formatting, be sure that the Adobe PDF printer is selected in the printer screen before you look for the paging and formatting of the file. In most OFFICE programs, if you change the printer the application will reflow the document to best match the printer (called "using printer metrics"). So check before you create the PDF that the layout is correct. -
So, I have purchased 'Windows 8 Pro' and am working to get it stable on my W520.
Specs:
- Lenovo W520 4270-CTO
- i7 2720qm
- Quadro 2000m
- 16gb G-Skill DDR3
- 120gb Intel 320 SSD
Usage:
- Systems Engineer using various development suites, virtualization technologies (directed i/o is a must), and other processor/ram intensive activities. I am looking to use Hyper-V and do some fairly heavy infrastructure simulations.
- Occasional games (usually DOTA, Skyrim, etc.) which run at high FPS with gfx settings near maxed (Starcraft 2 is an exception, which doesn't work at all... Stupid Blizzard...)
Windows 8 Issues:
- Cannot boot off install media with VT-d Virtualization Technology enabled. If I re-enable it post-install, sometimes it crashes, sometimes it doesn't.
- Blue screens on sleep resume
- Crashes on various driver installs (random, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't), locks up on boot, then after physical restart, crashes on Automatic Repair before being able to start back up normally.
- After installing Hyper-V, system crashes, crashes on automatic repair, then is AOK...until it randomly crashes
What I've Tried:
- Switching between Integrated/Discrete/Optimus graphics doesn't seem to have made any difference.
- Disabling VT-d seems to have helped with issues booting, but alas, no big fixes
- Updated BIOS to 1.38, and 1.39 - both made no difference, still at 1.39.
- Event log reports kernal power loss and various bugcheck errors but unable to find anything referencing the code provided, nor is there any surefire reported dll or driver which seems to be sticking out.
- I have attempted 3-4 installs from scratch without resolve.
Other then these issues, if its booted and doesn't crash, the o/s is quite peppy (faster then w7 by a fair degree) and the UltraNav touchpad works quite well with navigating Metro and various Charms.
Have a Mini Series 3 dock which works well (although it has its issues i'll post up elsewhere) and switches between docked and normal usage with ease.
I have since reverted back to Windows 7 until I can find something promising to work with as the lack of support resources is understandably limited at this point.
I cannot develop for Windows 8 or Windows Phone 8 without upgrading or buying a new system. I've been quite happy with my W520 but this is just frustrating and would rather not move to another mftr if I don't have to.
My question:
>>> Has anyone successfully installed and run Windows 8 Pro without issue?
>>> If so, can you please provide me with what releases/versions of the drivers you are running and what BIOS version you are running.
Any suggestions or sources would be immensely helpful in my quest to get W8 somewhat usable on this beast.
Thanks in advance!hazart wrote:
BSOD on resume:
Happened to a W530 with Crucial m4 mSATA SSD. It turned out that it would happen if the drive is password-protected. After removing the password in BIOS Setup, there's no more BSOD on resume.
So, thusfar, no BSODs on resume. I still have to install the rest of the drivers but at this point, no BSOD since fresh install early this morning. I only have the single Intel 320 SSD in my SATA bay, no mSata drive as of yet. Additionally, I do not have a HDD password. I use the BIOS password w/ fingerprint authentication though.
Post-install, Windows had installed whatever drivers it felt were necessary. After that finished, I had installed Lenovo System Update and went through its update procedure. I elected to install all but:
- ThinkVantage Active Protection (I have SSD, not necessary)
- Audio Driver for Windows 832/864 (Sound works, reports as High Definition Audio Device - I am investigating option for Dolby driver as I had setup in Windows 7 as per W520 Sound Enhancement thread)
- Ricoh Media Card Reader Device (only used a handful of times in the past, will find some cards to test)
Outstanding issues:
- Device Manager reports two non-install devices (Base System Device and Unknown Device).
- Base System Device hardware ID is: NTPNP_PC <-- I don't know what this is, any ideas?
- Unknown Device hardware ID is: ACPI/LEN <-- I assume intel chipset since I had already installed Power Management driver via System Update?
- Update other Windows standard drivers to Lenovo Windows 8 releases
- Update NVidia Drivers to latest release/verde (maybe depending on video performance)
- Setup Fingerprint software in Windows 8 to match that of the BIOS as right now, no fingerprint auth in Win8
- Install Development software, Hyper-v once I have everything else settled
- Anything else I'm forgetting?
Without jumping the gun, it seems as installing using UEFI fixed a few critical reliability problems (VT-d, boot, etc.). Try that if you're having severe stability issues. -
I'm a recently transformed "Windows to Apple" user, and I need to run various Windows software. Before installing Windows, I would like to hear from experiences from users if it works well. Also, I have an "Office for PC" that I need to re-download, however I was advised by someone that this software cannot be downloaded even if I had Windows in my MAC and that I will have to buy a new "Office for MAC" software. Thanks.
Yes, what you are looking at will work.
"Most of this would be for access to the shared folders which is not the same as RDP, correct? So i could
have myself connect from school to pull a word document, my friend connect from home to get the excel spreadsheet for our table top gaming, and my family connect to pull pictures from the shared folder on the server all at the same time. Because they
are accessing the shared folders it is not a RDP where they are accessing the server itself for administration."
This statement is correct. All of them would be able to be accessing the shared folders at the same time. This is the purpose of shared folders.
"the 1 user and RDP part is where I'm getting a little confused i think.
For the RDP part I thought that only applied to the server itself and not any of the client computers
connected to the server. So you are still limited to the 2 users to connect concurrently to the server or a client computer at any time?"
Sorry, not trying to confuse you. You mentioned to connect to a local machine at the same time. If you are staying away from RDP, then you won't have this issue. I would keep all shared folders on the server, not on any workstations.
You are correct 2 people can be RDP into a server at once. For client computers (workstations) you are limited to 1 person at a time. If you setup Anywhere Access correctly, then your friends and family should not need to RDP into a
client computer, they should only need to access the shared folders.
Something to keep in mind...for Anywhere Access to work, you will need to purchase a public certificate. You can do this from GoDaddy.com, Comodo or others. I would recommend either Godaddy or comodo. They make it easy and give plenty of instructions
on how to obtain the certificate. You will probably also have to purchase a domain name, and a static IP from your ISP. To fully do what you are looking at, it will take some out of pocket $$. -
Jabber for Windows Registration Issue
I have been facing issue with J4W registration and display error "no connection to server". Following is the version detail:-
Version CUCM and IM&P---> (10.5.2)

During analysis, i found 2 things in logs:-
1). Unable to download jabber-config.xml file (Download of TFTP File failed for server ) //// all the other xml files are succesfully downloaded which may indicate that there is an absence of jabber-config.xml file.
2). While signing into presence "OnLoginError: (data=0) LERR_JABBER_UNREACHABLE <16>: "

Sorry for the late reply. You may well have resolved this by now, if you have can I suggest that you update the post with the resolution so others may benefit.
Looking at the logs, I can see that Jabber is trying to login to the IMP server below, but its returning server unreachable error.

Unable to Resolve Windows Update Issue in Windows 8.1
Hello,
I recently, as far back as 1 month ago, began experiencing issues with the update service under the Windows 8.1 OS platform.
I found that I was having to repeatedly run the Windows Update Troubleshooting Tool. This appeared to fix the issue with each run of the tool, but eventually I'd have the same problem receiving updates again. My problem is as follows:
1. Windows Update service hangs during register analysis.
2. Unable to reset (stop or restart) wuauserv.
3. Unable to reset (stop or restart) Cryptserv.
4. Unable to reset (stop or restart) BITS.
5. Unit recently, was unable to connect to internet from Desktop GUI, but was able to connect using Metro GUI.
I'm not sure is there was a recent update that caused this issue, but I can no longer download updates for my system, nor can I successfully run the Windows Update Fixit tool.Hi,
Let's confirm these situations:
Now your desktop Internet Explorer can't connect Internet.
You receiving the same updates again and again.
If I am right, please check that update's installation status from update history.
Then refer to this article to troubleshoot:

on windows 8 and itunes I have importing problems the DVD is only reading the music cd from 1.5x to 4.0x for 95% of the time, it does hit speeds of 30x for the other 5% of the time. Is it a driver issue with the DVD or is it a windows 8 issue?
No. You have no alternative but to plug it into a computer running iTunes and restore it.

Windows Firewall issue, Inbound rule opend all, still not the same as turning off
This is Windows Firewall issue on Windows 8.1 Pro.
Backup Exec server cannot expand a computer node in selection list. I drill down to Microsoft Windows Network/Domain/Computers, then when I tried to expand a Windows 8.1 Pro computer node, it hangs out.
I narrowed this problem to Windows firewall related issue on Windows 8.1 Pro computer.
When I turn off Windows Firewall on Domain profile, Backup Exec Selection expands the computer node of the Windows 8.1 Pro computer. So, I created an inbound rule opening all to BAckup Exec server as following, but it's still not the same as turning off
Windows firewall specifically on Windows 8.1 Pro computer;
Any Local IP address, Any Remote IP address, Any port, Any protocol, All Interface, All Programs and Services, All profiles(Domain, Private, Public)
And there are no rules blocking any which may override the above rule.
Ethernet on Windows 8.1 Pro computer shows profile is linked with Domain, but just to make it work, I selected all profiles.
Even though I opened all available in inbound rule, it's still not the same as turning off windows firewall. Why am I missing? It looks as something related to RPC(UDP 135), but even when inbound rule is all open, why it matters? RPC seems working fine only when firewall is turned off on domain profile.
Protocol 17 is UDP

Windows vista - issues w/ linksys WRT54GC?
i have a new laptop running windows vista basic and i've tried two wireless routers so far - dlink DI-524 and now the Linksys WRT54GC.
With the dlink, I was able to connect, but unable to create a WEP password. Also, I named the network Home123, but it kept showing up as 'default' in My Networks. my wife was using her MacBook and it kept showing up as 'default' also.
So I purchased the new Linksys WRT54GC because the Dlink was over 2 years old and thought that may have been an issue. Well, tonight, I was able to connect to the Internet again, but the cdrom setup never recognized my router and it never asked me for creating a password.
Does anyone know is Vista has issues with wireless routers? Am I doing something wrong??

Well..try setting up the router manually....
connect the laptop to one of the LAN ports of the router and connect the modem to the internet port ....
access the router ui using http://192.168.1.1 . Keep the username blank and password is "admin"....once on the router ui, click on "mac address clone" subtab....enable it and click "clone my pc's mac"..save the settings and do a power cycle....
click on the "wireless" tab and change the ssid, channel - 1 or 11, under wireless security , select wpa and enter the password ( min 8 characters).. -

Where is the forum for Windows Update issues with Windows 10 TP 9926
Trying to find a fix to the Windows Update issue with Windows 10 TP 9926 build and can't find the correct forum to post this question?
This will impact receiving the new build upgrades and will impact test strategy for the new supported OS in our desktop application.Might try them over here.

Where is Support for Windows Update issues for Windows Server?
Where is Support for Windows Update Issues for Windows Server?
Windows Update keeps prompting to install an important update, KB2871690 and continually fails with error code 0x800f922
I ran all the fixes I can find, it still fails.
I also tried the manual install, fails.
Microsoft used to provide no charge support for Windows Update issues. They additionally offer online fixes for other versions of windows, but not server, and I can't find a forum.
I also cannot ignore the update, it continually prompts.
I ran the windowsupdate.diagcab and it continually states it fixes Windows Update error 0x80070057, by resetting windows update data store. It further states it fixes Problems installing recent updates.
But it doesn't. I've run it 50 times, and it says the same thing every time.
So there is no support for windows update, and no support for windowsupdate.diagcab.
What's the deal?I've done the SFC/ SCANNOW and DISM
here is the cbs.log

Mac on Windows network issues (Active Directory)....
I have a couple of Macs on a Windows domain in the school I work in. I'm able to get them to bind to Active Directory and I can log in fine. However, this is where 2 of my problems start. Maybe its an OS X issue, maybe its a Windows Server issue. Both Macs are running Mac OS X.5.6.
1. When everyone logs in they're supposed to get their own shared drive (referred to as their H drive). This drive does map, but in the Dock only. So I went to the Finder menu and selected Preferences and told Finder to display Connected Servers. It shows the network drive, but its not my H drive. Its the actual folder that my H drive is housed in. To kind of draw a picture here, my H drive is housed in cscsadmin as are other administrators and IT personnel. So when I log in using my username and password it will show my H drive in the dock and I can see all of items in that drive and on the desktop the cscsadmin drive is mapped instead of my H drive.
If I login as lab it will log in fine, but show the lab shared drive (they don't get H drives) in the dock but show cscsteachers on the Desktop as thats where the lab share is located. So its not just limited to 1 particular user. This is a systemwide issue for the Macs only.
Anyone have any ideas as to why it shows the folder that houses the shared drive instead of the users drive? I know this used to work fine because I've done it before, but that was back in the days of Mac OS X.3. Back then users H drives showed fine on the desktop.
2. My other issue is that when I'm using one of the Macs on the network (remember its a Windows network primarily) every time someone goes to print it comes up and asks for a username and password. So prints always prompts for a username and password. This is causing issues because people are checking the save in keychain box so they don't have to type the password in every time and if they screw up their credentials it saves the wrong credentials and won't let the user print anything on that Mac. I need to figure out why printing always asks users for their credentials to print. There is a known bug with printing in that it doesn't cache the Kerberos credentials properly. So it requires you to reauthenticate every time.
