Varying brightness on my ThinkPad Edge E545

I have a ThinkPad Edge E545. I've only had it a few days but it's brightness varies in and out constantly while I'm using it. I've seen other people have had the same problem but not on my exact computer so I wasn't able to fix it by the solutions given to them. Also mine runs on Windows 7 professional. This is the exact computer: http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Thinkpad-20B20011US-15-6-Inch-Laptop/dp/B00FU83YWS/ref=cm_cr_pr_product...
Please help me. Thanks!

What operating system was your machine shipped with? Lets say windows 7.
If it came with windows 7, what is your intent with installing a retail windows 7 on your current machine? Is a purchased retail win 7 or a trial 30 day?
Simple solution:
(1) If you backed up the factory partiton using the CREATE RECOVERY DISC, rebuild your system with those DVDs.
(2) Call the support center and order factory recovery disc with the operating system originally shipped on the machine.
(3) Reinstall win 7 using the 64 bit install disc. And forget using factory install. As long as you have a PRODUCT key to activate win 7, you are good to go.  Download whatever software you need from the Lenovo website, install.
I went from Vista and installed win 7 home, retail version.  I wiped the whole drive clean during the install.  Installed RnR, took a backup to DVD.  That is my recovery option now.
Technically what happened:
(1) Factory ship modified BCD (boot control data) to have entries for Windows, Windows RE, and RNR/factory install.
When you use RNR to factory install, it points to a BCD entry to use on reboot.  In your case, your system booted into windows RE (recovery environment).
(2) Your windows install rebuilt the BCD, removing the entry to the factory partition.  There is another post out here, recently, have the same problem as you.  I will post the link to their resolution.  It involved installing DEBIAN free software, and placing wim.pe software into the factory partition or such to make it bootable again.
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/Recovery-problem/m-p/1190409#M23247
Back to the main question, what do you want on your system today?  Retail 64 bit win 7 from retail box?
(3) Opps, it wont boot. Someone is helping me.

  • Does Thinkpad Edge E545 have a non-stopping fan?

I was thinking of purchasing this model:
    http://shop.lenovo.com/ae/en/laptops/thinkpad/edge-series/e545/
I don't need anything fancy just something reliable so this would suit me fine. I mentioned it to a friend who said he bought the E530 and has regretted it ever since due to an issue with the fan. Apparently once the fan starts it doesn't stop. There is a 90-page thread about here:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/E530-pulsing-whiny-fan-no-low-load/td-p/797577/pa...
I had assumed this would have just been an isolated model problem. What is concerning is that not only have Lenovo not fixed the issue but I have come across similar complaints about the next model, the E540:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/E540-Fan-does-not-stop/td-p/1439657
If the same issue is present in the next model am I wrong to assume it is also present in the E545? Can someone confirm either way plz. I am also considering a Dell Latitude which I will purchase if there is no confirmation the problem has been addressed, but I would prefer to get this model.
    Regards, Miranda.

I set up an account just to reply to you!...and also I just bought a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545, and I want everyone to know what they're doing.  Plus, I'm having the same problem.  I just downloaded the Broadcom Wireless LAN (Driver here! Remember to choose for either Windows XP, 8, 8.1, or whatever you have!) and I've seen past comments that this has worked for them.  I'm about to go try it out, so wish me luck!  I hope you haven't returned that laptop you bought!  Lenovo is usually such a good brand, from what I hear, and I personally already enjoy the exterior, as I put structure, stability, and damage-resistant against style, which the Edge E545 seems to be more for the accident prone or careful type, but still cool!  Good luck!

  • ThinkPad Edge E545 - fehlerhafte Firmware

    2. Die Whitelist verhindert den Einsatz eines alternativen WLAN/Bluetooth-Moduls.
    3. Die ACPi-Tabellen sind ebenfalls nicht ganz sauber.

Sorry to ressurect an old thread, but recently I've been getting random kernel panics on my t61 as well. I believe the root cause is the wireless card. I have an intel 4965 card just like you.

  • Bios protection from infection with virus or bios recovery of Lenovo Thinkpad Edge e545

I have Lenovo Thinkpad Edge e545 laptop. Among downloads there are no bios images but only backup cd iso file. Does laptop bios somehow protected from beeing infected with virus when OS installed on laptop is infected? If not, is there a way to recover bios from usb flash? Or is there some other way to recover already infected bios without help of technical support center?

    Dear Wyacheslav1
    Welcome in lenovo community
Actually there is no relationship between the Virus and the BIOS also the BIOS cannot be infected such as the windows . So if you have any debut that your machine has been attacked by a Virus, you can install any antivirus application to scan for this virus and to protect the machine from such attack

  • Built-in mic on Thinkpad Edge E545 Win 8.1 not working

OK so when I got this computer shipped to me from school back in November of 2014 it had Win. 7 on it. I had the Windows 8 recovery disc and decided to use that to upgrade the OS. Since that day my mic has been on steriods. I also keep getting the stupid message about the Dolby digital audio drivers not working. I've done everything I could find to to on the interwebs. I had installed the update first and still got it.  Then I uninstalled, reinstalled, and restarted the laptop... still got the message.  Now I can't even use Skype.  PLEASE someone with updated information help! I need this thing to work for school since I have tutoring groups via Skype and such.  Many thanks.

Thanks for your answer! I was able to solve the problem by running the pre-installed System Update rather than some of the solutions that had been poster somewhere else in the forum.
In any case, for the record, the path of the file I was referring to is C:\Program Files (x86)\ Thinkpad \ Utilities\ PWMTR64V.dll

I want to dock my E545 (Windows 8.1) if someone can recommend a docking station brand+model that works. Suggestions?

True, the Thuderbold display is good, but it doesn't give me that FULL desktop experience with all the other peripherals, etc like this does for my Lenovo:

  • ThinkPad Edge E545 - Sluggish & Crashes Daily

    Hi there,
I thought I'd see if I could get help here before opening a repair ticket. I'm experiencing general sluggishness as well as daily freezups and browser crashes with this brand new laptop purchased in November of 2014. Whenever I run either Chrome or Internet Explorer, the names and x's (to close tabs) in the browser tabs suddenly disappear on a daily basis at random times. I have to either reboot or use Task Manager to close the browser and start again when this happens. I also get random freezes, where the entire computer (including the mouse cursor) stops responding, then it starts responding again after 20-30 seconds. Chrome in particular has a curious issue when launched: instead of the normal Chrome window appearing, a very generic, basic, and blank window appears at first, which after three seconds is filled in with the normal Chrome features. On no other computer I own or use does Chrome behave this way, it usually just launches normally from the start.
I bought this laptop with Windows 7 preinstalled rather than 8. The only programs I installed are Avast, AOL 9.7, CCleaner, and MalwareBytes (the free version that does not actively run), and I only removed whatever antivirus came preinstalled (was it McAfee?). I also updated Java, Adobe Reader, and Flash. The problems persisted even after I completely uninstalled Avast. I've run virus scans with both Avast and MalwareBytes and found 0 infections. Uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome, even after cleaning the registry and manually removing leftover files and folders in the AppData and ProgramData folders in between uninstall and reinstall, does not accomplish anything. Booting in Safe Mode seems to alleviate the curious Chrome load issue (it opens with the normal titlebar and buttons, without a blank startup window).
Any ideas what's wrong? Any known issues with the Windows 7 drivers perhaps? Or the included Lenovo software? Thanks.
    Peace,
    Brian

  • What driver to install to fix Brightness issues on my Edge 15 with Windows 8.1

    Hi,
On my Edge 15 with Windows 8.1, Brightness is unavailable from Windows. I can adjust brightness with the Fn keys, but it keeps resetting it's default value. Very annoying.
There are a lot of drivers, which one should I install to fix this problem?
    Thanks,
    Heras

    Hi Heras2,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with Brightness on your ThinkPad Edge 15.
To resolve the issue please update Display drivers, Hotkey features & power management application.
Note: before updating the above application you have to uninstall it first from Control panel –Program & feature option and after that you have to update.
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,
    Hemanth Kumar

  • Please help -- Edge E545 bricked after flashing bios (firmware)

    Hi Folks,
I just bricked my Thinkpad Edge E545 while attempting to update the BIOS from 1.09 to 1.12. I tried to use a bootable CD, and it seemed to go well, but when it seemed to be done, I got contradictory instructions to either remove the CD and power off or leave the CD in and reboot. I left the CD in the drive and pressed ENTER. The screen went blank, and stayed that way, with no discernable activity. At some point I held the power button to shut it off. That was the last I saw anything on the screen.
Anyhow, I tried to use the T400 procedure below to prepare a bootable USB stick with the firmware to flash on it. (In the meantime I have learned that this is the "phoenix crisis disk" procedure).
The utilities I got here: http://www.staff.uni-marburg.de/%7Eschmitzr/T43_recovery.zip
    stick preparation (on Win2008R2 system):
    1) zero'd a USB stick (2GB)
    2) used WINCRIS.EXE to format the stick (pointed it at the v1.12 "BIOS.WPH")
    3) unplugged and replugged stick
    4) copied MINIDOS.SYS, PHLASH16.EXE and BIOS.WPH to the top directory of the new filesystem on the stick
    5) "safefly removed" the stick
    reflashing:
    1) disconnected battery and power cable
    2) plugged in stick (tried all 4 USB jacks, 2x full and 2x SS)
    3) pressed and held FN and B keys (also tried FN+R, FN+ESC)
    4) plugged in power
    5) pressed power button
none of the above had any observable effect. The USB stick is never accessed. I even tried disconnecting the CMOS battery before an attempt -- no change.
Does anyone have a hint about how to reflash trashed firmware on this laptop? This laptop has UEFI firmware -- maybe it's simply not possible to perform a crisis recovery?
    cheers,
    Rob

    edgardcafe,
I take it that you sent your T135D to the repair Depot, and maybe it was sent before you saw my last message?  It may have been possible to continue using the laptop off of battery power, but only until that existing charge was depleted.
As the Support Bulletin you referenced explains, "should the BIOS determine that a harness failure is occurring, external power will immediately be disabled eliminating the possibility of the over heating.  You will then need to contact the Toshiba call center to set up a warranty repair."  If that's what has occurred here then the BIOS is doing what it was designed to do in order to eliminate the risk of damage or injury.
Depot repairs typically take 7-10 days so that's a reasonable expectation for how fast you're likely to get your laptop back, but no one here in the forums can guarantee a repair time for any specific case or expedite general repairs.  I understand that it's a inconvenience but better safe than sorry.
    Regards,
    Jim

Any ideas how to fix this or i must use my warranty?
I'll be very grateful for any advice!

  • Need Suggestion: buy ThinkPad Edge E540 or wait for Edge E550?

    Hello Everyone,
I need suggestion what to do: buy ThinkPad Edge E54020C6003AGE (i7 4702MQ & GF 740M 2GB) or wait for Edge E550?
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Lenovo-ThinkPad-Edge-E540-20C6003AGE-Notebook.114194.0.html in Germany is price about 830 Euros
I use ThinkPads in last 10 years for study and gaming (R60, SL510, Edge 520) and wish sell my Edge E520 replace it with new one due stuck with old Radeon 6630M drivers (I cannot use a new AMD drivers when I try I getting mostly BOSD errors and latest Official Lenovo driver is from 2012) second reason is that E520 fan cannot be accessed & cleaned on easy way.
In which month Lenovo mostly release new Edges, What is your option are Broadwell CPU + GeForce 840/940M in Edges worth to wait?
In future I try to avoid AMD GPU due poor drivers support.
I know that there is much better notebooks for gaming but I like ThinkPads

To support it the model you're buying should be equiped with the :
    Intel® Dual Band Wireless-N 7260
    Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260
Wireless network adapters and core i5/i7 cpu's . But careful, not all E540s come with the intel wireless card
Just check this and you're good to go.

  • How to use Intel Rapid Start technology on my ThinkPad Edge 531 computer?

I have a Thinkpad Edge 531 (model 6885-73G) preloaded with Windows 7 64bit. According to the appropriate user guide (see Thinkpad E531 User Guide - page 108) and chipset specifications Mobile Intel® HM77 Express this ThinkPad model supports Intel Rapid Start Technology with a special partition on the SSD M.2.Such an SSD with the specification M.2 (see MyDigitalSSD Super Cache 2) I bought it and installed successfully on my ThinkPad, which can run a cache software FNet HybriDisk on.
However, even if I proceed exactly according to the installation script by Intel, see (Intel Rapid Start Technology User Guide) or by the installation script by Lenovo community, (see Edge E330 and Intel Rapid Start), I can not put into operation Intel Rapid Start Technology on my ThinkPad, although I use the installed SSD disk with an alone partition of appropriate type (with ID type 84 on MBR) with more allocated space than the size of RAM for my ThinkPad and with the currently deployed version of BIOS (1.29) and current drivers, such is Intel (R) Rapid Storage Technology Driver version 11.1.5.1001 downloaded from the webiste of Lenovo support for this model ThinkPad Edge 531.
Since, in my opinion, based on the above specifications declared by the manufacturer Lenovo and Intel, this ThinkPad model should support Intel Rapid Start Technology, I would like therefore to know how this technology on my ThinkPad to put into operation, because of which I also bought this ThinkPad model. Does exist for this model ThinkPad Edge 531 some specific deployment scenario of Intel Rapid Start Technology? Does anyone have any practical experience with the launch of this technology on those ThinkPad models? Can it be expected that the full support of Intel Rapid Start Technology for the ThinkPad Edge 531 will occur after the release of a new version of the BIOS or a new version of Solid State Drive Firmware Update Utility with support for MyDigitalSSD Super Cache 2 published on the website of Lenovo support?
Thanks in advance for any advice and guidance with the launch of Intel Rapid Start Technology on my ThinkPad Edge 531.

    Hi @nmulji ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j000 Notebook and issues with Raid technology. Here is a link that helps with the driver for your Notebook.
You might need this update for software and drivers with the Intel Management Engine Interface.
Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system at the time of purchase. If something is not updated this could be causing an issue.

  • Thinkpad Edge E440 Random Lags, Stuttering, Latency Problem.

Dear All, I bought Thinkpad Edge E440 almost two weeks ago. The problem is it randomly lags and stutter without reason. For example I was writing documents on Microsoft Word, plays music on foobar2000 and doing some light browsing (only few tabs) but randomly the music lags for 1-2 seconds. It doesn't skip, it lags or stutter (sorry I don't know the right term). Also sometime it took awhile to open a new tab on firefox web browser while usually it took instantly.
Another example is I play two online games, World of Tanks (WoT in short, a tank simulation game) and Ghost Recon Phantoms (a shooting game). When I play both game, the gameplay went smooth but randomly it lags or stutter like 1 second on more, then it went smooth again and then stutter again. The game doesn't became slow (which is called FPS drop if I am not wrong), the display just stop moving and mouse/keyboard become unresponsive during the lag/stutter period. On the other hand I also played WoT on my Pentium 4 PC and it went smooth without any lags, though of course the settings is inferior to my E440 laptop (Ghost Recon Phantoms can't be played on my Pentium 4 so I won't compare it).
Also sometimes the audio sounds 'spiky'.
As I searched online, people said that this is called/related to Latency problem and I should use LatencyMon to check it. After using LatencyMon I found several 'culprits' which causes big latency such as NDIS.sys, ACPI.sys, ATAPORT.sys, storport.sys, etc. I also tried to disable cpu throttling, power management settings and such but the problem doesn't go away.
I am sure that there is something wrong with my hardware because if its caused by settings such as cpu throttling, power management (which I think is software-related) then won't this happen to everybody? I mean, I asked a fellow E440 user and he said that his laptop is fine and my problems doesn't occur on him.
I have phoned Lenovo Customer Service. I was using Windows 7 Ultimate. At first they told me to do clean reinstall and install the drivers in the order the CS give me. I did clean reinstall 4 times to try different driver and program installation sequence to see if I might find a way to fix my problem, but I found no solution (I tried Lenovo CS driver install order on the last clean reinstall). I even tried running LatencyMon after clean reinstall before installing any drivers or updates but the LatencyMon still reports big, 'unhealthy' latency.
Lenovo CS then told me to do hardware scan on Lenovo Solution Center. There are warning on the Nvidia GT740M stress test but the CS told me that the results are good. His last solution is that I should go to a Lenovo Service Center to check for the problem there.
I moved to Windows 8.1 to see if the problem will be solved but too bad it's not. I have ran hardware scan for 5 times, there are two times(or 3 times I forgot) that there is warning on Harddisk SMART short self-test, 2 times warning on Nvidia GT740M stress test, one time scan finished with no warning. Even so, the end result for all the tests is 'Passed'.
I think the problem lies within my harddisk (or something related to data transfer) since when I browse my local drive in windows explorer sometimes it took a long time for the icons to load but sometime it just loads instantly. And I am not sure what that Nvidia stress test warning has to do with.
Also I only use the stock 4GB Ram. Could this related to the problem? Though when I look at Windows 8.1 Task Manager the memory usage rarely goes above 60%.
Last but not least. I plug a wireless mouse on my laptop which I use mostly for playing games, but in the end I switches between mouse-touchpad-mouse and so on during working too. Sometime my touchpad suddenly went unresponsive for few seconds but my mouse is still usable during that moment. Then after I move my wireless mouse, my touchpad become responsive again. Any idea why this is happening? I think this is probably because touchpad driver not perfectly compatible with Windows 8.1 as I don't recall having this trackpad issue on WIndows 7.
Can somebody help me? Does anyone else ever had the same problem as I do?
I am sorry for the really long explanation. Your response will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.
    -Tahta

Hi All, sorry for being a while for a long time.
First of all, I should say that I am not sure if my trackpad/pointing device problem is related to the lag/stutter/latency problem so I should have made two different thread instead. Sorry if anyone got confused with this.
@rallygion, the first OS I used on this laptop was Windows 7 64bit. If I remember correctly I don't experience the trackpad/pointing device problem back then, maybe I was just forgotten tho. I am using Windows 8.1 starting sometime before I made this thread. Now the problem has gone worse, sometime the touchpad & red dot in the keyboard won't work for a whole day so I must use external mouse.
At first I thought its compability problem with Windows 8.1 but now I think the hardware has problem too. However, the keyboard is fully functional.
@waqs, thanks for your suggestion! Unfortunately it doesn't solve the lag/stutter/latency problem.
@ghasan, our problem is quite similar except I didn't use the M.2 SSD. One thing I notice is the disk activity sometimes jumps to 100% when the lags happened.
The problem doesn't lie with the laptop specification is inferior. Fyi, when I play music on foobar2000 it took few second for music to start playing (foobar says 'starting playback..') while on my pentium 4 desktop (which I still use) the music plays right after I clicked the song.
Also, eventhough I've closed all my applications, leaving only music player and microsoft word/firefox, the music which is playing lags (randomly stops for a moment).
The lags also happened when watching videos. I played video on Media Player Classic, turned the statistics on. There happen to be frame drops sometimes. Not framerate drop, just frame dropped. I mean, I think framerate dropping has relation with computer power while in my case the frame just randomly drops, which 'damages' the video, not slowing it down.
I am sure that this is hardware-related problem. I am going to take my laptop to service center but not now since I am in need on my laptop now.
I will give update later when I have gone to the service center.

  • Thinkpad Edge 15 TVSU "Not applicable" after fresh wipe of Windows 8.1 and install of Windows 7

    Hello,
I have a user that purchased a Lenovo laptop and is having problems downloading drivers to support the machine now that it has Windows 7 (via Volume Licensing) on it. When running System Update after Windows updates, it will tell me that "There are no drivers that are applicable" when I know for a fact that he does not have touchpad software or the ability to light up his keyboard. When trying to install the Synaptics UltraNav Touchpad Driver it will tell me that a touchpad doesn't exist.
    Any help would be great,
    -Bobstod

Good day and welcome to the community.
Please confirm whether the machine in question is one of this type (model code number may be slightly different):
    http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/flex-series/edge-15/index.html
If so, then we can move your thread to the 'non-ThinkPad' Edge subforum.
Also, if it's one of this family, then applicable drivers can be found here:
    http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-edge-series-laptops/edge-15-lap...
    Please do let us know.
