Vault and Copy Library...

So, currently I choose to update my vault on one external drive and copy the library once a month to another external drive. My working library is housed in my computer.
Yes, I have one project as referenced... a large project nonetheless. This project is stored on external #1 and 'copied' on external #2.
So... at the end of the day I have my working library on my internal computer. One vault on 1 external drive, backed up frequently. And one 'copy' of my library on another external drive.
By chance... if I loose my main, on a day... I can just drag the copy library on external #2 back to my internal and add any projects that were added since the last copy of the vault on external 2 since the last full copy.
Since dragging a copy of the complete library is faster than restoring from a Vault... does this seam like an intuitive double back up method? What would you do different.
Additional factors.... my Aperture library is about 110 gigs and my one referenced project is 20 gigs.
Any input regarding pros and cons of this set up will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
mb

sorry... I am using 10.4.11 if it matters.

  • Emptying Trash and Copying Library

I am new to Mac. I had all of my Photos transferred from my old Dell to my lovely new MacBook Pro. All of the photos were duplicated at least three times. So I have now gone through and organized all of the photos into Events. I am happy with the current library and event. Although I try to empty the trash and it freezes up considering there are 12,000 photos currently in the trash. My goal is to empty the trash and copy the Iphoto library from my external hard drive to my Mac HD on my laptop.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
iPhoto will not trash 12k images at one time. (I think it's a precaution against something like a 4 year old being, er, "helpful"). You'll need to put those pics back in the Library and delete them in batches.
How to find them again? Flag them before returning them to the Library.

  • About Vault and a simple copy of  Aperture Library

I have a Vault in an external HD and my Aperture Library in another external HD. I have observed when I open Aperture and forgot to turn the external HD on that I have first to turn it on and re-write the route in Preferences.
My question is: If I have a copy of my Library instead a Vault and in case of losing the information that I have in the main HD I simply changed the route selecting the second HD. Is it the same?
    Regards.

I just bought a new MBP and I'm looking for some clarification about the library/vault when using more than one Mac with aperture. I don't always want to be stuck carrying an external HD around with my laptop. Will the following thought process work....I backup my library on my mac pro to a vault on an external HD then transfer that vault to my new MBP. If I'm on the road and make changes to the library on the MBP I would need to sync with the vault on the external HD and then sync the external HD with the library on my Mac Pro desktop to maintain identical libraries, correct? I was thinking that I would need to do this to maintain multiple copies of my library but also to be able to do final editing with my desktop and cinema display. I guess I could also just connect my cinema display to my MBP and use the 17" & cinema displays for final editing.
    Thanks for any comments/suggestions.

  • Need help in distributing Master Folder (all my original pics), Aperture Library, Aperture Back-up, Vault and Time Machine

I have a desktop iMac and three external HDs. One HD called Aperture Library (2T) now has Aperture Library, Time Machine backups and Master Folder, which is where I put my RAW files of pictures I want to keep. A second HD called Aperture back-up (1T) has another large Master Folder. This was created a long time ago when I was using Lightroom. I plan to transfer pictures on to HD Aperture Library > Master Folder so I will have 1 Master Folder. A third external HD called Vault (1T) now only contains my Quicken b/u.
I have not made a vault yet for Aperture, because I am in the process of exporting files from Lightroom and bringing them into Aperture 3. What a mess, especially because I was not able to use my photo apps (Lightroom or Aperture) for a few months and forgot  the do's and don'ts. Please help me organize this stuff while I have the time and motivation. Greatly appreciated.

Note that Masters need only be backed up once (but to multiple backup locations) and that backup should happen immediately after copying to the hard drive from the camera card, before involving Aperture or any other images management app.
Time Capsule is an ongoing regular-routine backup process. Image originals instead need irregularly timed backup, once.
IMO referenced Masters make far more sense than building huge managed-Masters Libraries.
    • Hard disk speed. Drives slow as they fill so making a drive more full (which managed Masters always does) will slow down drive operation.
    • Database size. Larger databases are by definition more prone to "issues" than smaller databases are.
    • Vaults. Larger Library means larger Vaults, and Vaults are an incremental repetitive backup process, so again larger Vaults are by definition more prone to "issues" than smaller Vaults are. One-time backup of Referenced Masters (each file small, unlike a huge managed-Masters DB) is neither incremental nor ongoing; which is by definition a more stable process.
Managed-Masters Libraries can work, but they cannot avoid the basic database physics.

  • Difference between vault and backing up aperture library

i have been trying to understand the difference between simply backing up in aperture via the vault and just backiing up the aperture library file.
my workflow involves backing up the original raw files to DVD and also backing the raw files to an external drive. i keep only raw files that are in progress on my mac book pro.
when i complete a project, i just copy the aperture library file from my mac book pro over to my external drive and also back up the aperture library file to a dvd, too. that way i have the raw files backed up, and the aperture library files backed up.
is this sufficient enough or do i need to set up a vault, too?

Is there a way to make a smart "playlist" of specific books in my iTunes library, and copy ONLY THOSE books to an iOS device? I own an iPad and an iPhone but I want different books on each different device. When I've tried this, the iOS devices don't seem to respond.

There is no playlist for iBooks, butther eis nothing to preent you from choosing to download specific titles from itunes, or syncing just specific titles to an individual device.

  • I recently reset my computer and copy my music from an external hard drive to my itunes library.  When I click on a song to play i get an error message that says " the song could not be used because the original file could not be found".  need help

I recently reset my computer and copy my music from an external hard drive to my itunes library.  When I click on a song to play i get an error message that says " the song could not be used because the original file could not be found".  But when I have my external hard drive plug in the song will play with no problem.  What do I need to do to play my music without having the external harddrive plug in ????????  Please help

Because the location for each song in your library is on your hard drive.  If the hard drive isn't there, how can iTunes play it?
You'll have to move/copy the music from your hard drive to your computer's hard drive.
Basically, EASIEST way to do all this, if you don't care about your play counts, etc...
-Delete EVERYTHING from iTunes, so that your library is now empty.
-Go to "Advanced" inside of the "Preferences" window, found in the "Edit" drop-down.  You can also access Preferences by pressing Ctrl+, (Press Ctrl and the comma key)
-Change your iTunes Media Folder Location to something simple, but on your computer. I use C:/iTunes.  Make sure "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized" and "Copy files to...." are both checked.  You can close Preferences now.
-Now, drag and drop your music from your hard drive into your iTunes library.  iTunes will automatically add the music to your library, as you would expect, and also creates a copy of each file to place into that iTunes Media Folder you just created.
    Shouldn't have any more problems...

Was your wife logged into the libray at the time you tried to log in? I have had a similar problem and it was because another user was logged into the library when I attempted to. I got the permission denied banner.

  • How to update my library and copy images to replace current linked ones?

I've decided that I want to update my iPhoto library. Currently, most images that have been imported are just using links to images in their actual location. I want to change that so that all images are actually copied into the iPhoto library and no long remain outside of the software's structure.
There does not seem to be a command for doing that – sort of equivilent to one in iTunes that does something very similar. Does anyone have any ideas about how to do this? It seems that there might be an Automator workflow out there that would
    step through my iPhoto library
check to see if it is a link external to iPhoto
if it is a link, then replace it with a copy of the actual image
delete the original image (i.e. with steps 3 and 4, 'move' the image into iPhoto)
produce a list of images that the original cannot be found (after Spotlight has had its go at finding the images for import)
Surely there is something out there already so I don't have to write it.

iPhoto has no built-in tools to turn a referenced library into a managed library.
There are two options using other programs, but both are not free:
Use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager:If you copy your iPhoto Library with this tool, it will include the referenced originals into the copied library.
Upgrade to Aperture: Aperture is the professional version of iPhoto with more advanced editing and organisational tools, and it has built-in tools to manage referenced originals, relocate them, and consolidate them. iPhoto and Aperture are compatible and can both work on each other's photo libraries.

  • HT1364 I am trying to change the location of my itunes library and the library doesn't copy to the new location.

I am trying to change the location of my itunes library and the library doesn't copy to the new location.  I followed the steps in the help message (HT1364) exactly but I am not prompted to consolidate in the new location.  Any suggestions?

Hi ed2345 and diesel vdub,  when I consolidate, the files start copying to the new location and part way through I get a message that the copying failed (-50) even though all of the files are already in place in the new location.  Should I just delete the itunes in the new location and manually copy the files again?  But in itunes, I have indicated that the new location is on the external hard drive but itunes seems to ignore that and still looks for itunes in the original location on my internal hard drive.  I disabled the location of itunes in the old location (by labelling itunes as "itunes old") and it tried to create a new itunes at the old location and prompted me to import music and videos from a CD or other source.  I hope I am making sense.

  • Copy iTunes and iPhoto library to new air mac

I've just bought a new air mac. I have my entire music and photo library on my imac - which is running snow leopard. I back the imac up to a 1tb time machine.
I tried to use migration assistant over wireless to migrate info to my air mac but this failed - as expected over wireless.
I ideally want to copy over itunes, iphoto , files and folders and my windows for mac to the air mac and retain them on my imac.
Is there an easy way to copy my information to my new air mac ?
There seems to be lots of hacks and options but I'm not usre which is the best way ?

    Perhaps this will help: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748.
Your iPhoto library is located in the /Home/Pictures/ folder. If you've already migrated the home folder then everything has been moved including the iTunes library which is in the /Home/Music/ folder.

  • Restore Library from Vault and projects empty

I have purchased Aperture 3.1.1 from the Mac App Store and then proceeded to import all of my photos by Restoring the Library from my Aperture Vault.
The Vault imported and of course Aperture asked me to update the database as the Vault was created in an earlier version of Aperture 3.
Now, in Aperture I can see all of my folders, projects and albums. However, each project, folder or album indicates that there are 0 objects and also there are no generated thumbnails.
They are obviously in the Vault and now the Library because both files are over 36Gb in file size.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?
    Thank you.

Welcome to the list. Make sure you read the [Help & Terms of Use|http://discussions.apple.com/help.jspa] section when you get a chance.
Just to be clear in the first paragraph you mention restoring the vault and in the second you mentioned importing. You did use the Aperture vault command *Restore Vault* ?

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • Copied Library to External Hard drive and iTunes cannot find

I copied my iTunes library to an external hard drive last night and went into preferences and changed location and then deleted the original folder...now iTunes is empty... If I go onto hard drive and select a song it tranfers it into iTunes (and back onto computers hard drive)...obviously did something wrong...anybody have any suggestions on how to fix?

Assuming you use the iTunes default settings where iTunes copied added items to your iTunes folder and organizes your library (meaning - everything is all self contained in the iTunes folder), then all you have to do is drag & drop your iTunes folder (not just the iTunes Music folder you find inside the iTunes folder) to the external drive and copy the entire thing.
If you want to test that it worked or would like to actually start using it from that location instead, use these instructions when you start iTunes to point it to the new location...
How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one

If you are just testing, then close iTunes after you verify it works, and restart iTunes again with the same instructions and point it back to your internal drive (original) location.

  • I want to access my library on my macbook pro and copy work done away from home from my imac how do I do this?

I want to access my library on my macbook pro and copy work done away from home to Aperture on my imac how do I do this?

Are you working on images on both machines?
If you want to round-trip images, you can export a project as a library from your iMac, copy that to your MacBook Pro, and then edit the images there.  When you're done, copy that library back to the iMac and import it to your iMac.  The iMac should recognize the changes you've made and update its images.
Read the Aperture help file, which will guide you to the Aperture manual.  It can walk you through this.  You have to be careful to do it correctly, but I've done this a few times and it works quite well.
