Vault - POINTLESS (!) ?

I have been running Aperture quite happily for a very long time.
- have another (2nd) external hard drive running just Time Machine;
- have another (3rd) external hard drive Just for Aperture VAULT.
have been making lots of projects, and when finished duitifully hit the 'back up vault' button, it spins all done, and thought nothing more of it (safe ! in the knowledge that Vault had run and gone green, all backed up)
I recently 'cleaned up' my main MAC desktop, and started another few Aperture projects and kept VAULT backing up, same as before.
*TO MY UTTER DISMAY* all the previous projects have 'gone' from the vault (3rd external drive), and only the most recent (post Mac DESKTOP clean up) are there.. the VAULT is virtually EMPTY !
Where have they all gone ?
*what is the POINT of VAULT* if it is not a true back up (like Time machine?) !!
- is there 'anywhere' else on the historic 'desktop' time machine that they MIGHT be stored (perhaps a hidden folder) if i go Back through my Time Machine drive?
PLEASE HELP !!

Not sure on the vault issue as I don't currently use it.
If you did not specifically exclude the Aperture Library in the Time Machine preferences, then you should have that package available in the Time Machine interface.
It should be in whatever location you keep the library (default being '~/Pictures' folder). You need to run Time Machine from that location and you can restore the library.
Note - I would recommend renaming your current library and moving it to another location (to prevent issues during restore). Then run the Time Machine restore from the historical date you know will contain all your images.

  • Backup concerns (Vault and DVD backup workflows)

I am a little bit concerned with regard to how the whole backup regimen is implemented in Aperture.
    My concerns are twofold:
    - vault is not incremental. Thus, when you update the vault (backup) you are effectively creating a whole new backup to replace the one you had already. If my library consists of tens of thousands of RAW images, it seems pointless to have to back up the whole thing again just to update, say, 50 new additions. What am I missing here? Is the idea to create multiple smaller vaults? One new vault for each major import?
    - backing up to DVD. My current workflow using Finder/Bridge is to take images from my camera cards (which on a typical shoot will require the space of a DVD) and immediately burn a backup before I do anything at all to the images. This of course requires me to offload the cards into a folder from finder. Now with Aperture, you are expected to import directly from the camera cards into the Aperature architecture. Ok, so how do I go about getting my newly imported files 'exported' as RAW files to my DVD for backup purposes? I don't have Aperture yet, so am looking at the online documentation. Does 'export master' allow doing so to a DVD and then burning? Somehow I dont think that would actually work.
I don't like the idea of relying on another hard drive for backup purposes, so DVD's are peace of mind for me (although I prefer to do both).

It is incremental. I know, because I have created a vault and it only backs up what has changed, not the whole library. Very quick too. Not sure how you came up with this hypothesis. Have you tried to do this yet ?

    Two options:
    1) You can export your newly imported master images to a folder on your hard drive and then use toast or the burn feature to burn a DVD.
    2) Copy the images off the CF card, using Finder, to a local directory on your hard disk. Copy this directory off to a DVD for peace of mind. Now tell Aperture to import this directory into your library. After the import is complete, delete this directory.

  • Can you Import  albums/matadata from a vault to a new library ?

After using ver3.01 for a few weeks and getting comfortable with it, I converted & upgraded several older managed libraries. All went well except for the last one. There must be some corrupted images somewhere in that 200Gig Library, for all the horror stories I read about on this forum materialized - The endless hours, the spinning beach ball, the crashes etc.
Since I had backed up this Library with vaults ( I was not able to rebuild from the vault either ), I knew that by RIght Clicking on the Vault and "show package content" I could access & rescue the projects individually. That worked and here I come to the part I could not successfully complete -import an existing album to a new library.
Where I had both projects and albums residing inside a folder - I could move the projects to a new Library, but not the Albums. Is there a way to do that ?

I would say no. I have an Ipad2 with the connection kit. A recent Sony camera which works fine in imovie for my 27" imac, but nothing with the Ipad. Only thing that it finds are pictures that can be made with the same video camera. Apple wrote a note aboit probkmes with importing, but i'm very disappointed with what i have right now.

I've got my iphone 4 on the release date and i love it,
however there is one thing that i hate and what to change, why can't i delete the apps i don't use like
Stocks, Weather, Voice Memos, Compass and the new one Game centre all of these app my be useful to some people however for a student as myself they are pointless and only take up space on my iphone which i could use on music/videos
is there a way to delete these unwanted apps?

the ones you refered are the native apps, and can't be deleted. If however you don't like them you can always put them on the folders that you won't use and move them to the last page.

  • How do I use the remote wipe feature for file vault 2 / lion?

I tried to find a preference panel. I know that for the ios you have to link/setup your device. I tried the find my iphone web site to see if my computer was listed there and it isn't at the moment. Is this new lion feature only available later with icloud? I checked the lion feature page and it lists it with file vault 2 with no asterisk so my guess is it should already now work.
It would be a pity to think you've setup your computer to find out that you hadn't "activated" your computer/laptop

    Hi,
I'm out of the country on business but probably the only way to figure this out is to call apple or drop by their retail stores. If no one figures this out (and I'm pretty sure there is nothing to figure out at this time). I'll try to call apple when I'm back in august.
I find it wrong that apple touts this as a feature with no disclaimer. I'm a loyal mac fan for twenty years so I'll continue to buy their prodcuts and I did buy lion the day it came out. BUT a disclaimer (as they have done in the past) would have been nice. I know of at least two mac users who usually don't buy new OS's until they get it with their new laptops that specifically bought lion for this feature since they had read about it in a newspaper article.
I also thought this was one of the more useful features in lion since my family already "lost" an iPad and we liked to delete our data after our alarm and message didn't work for a day.
I'm sure  apple has it's reasons for not offering the feature just yet but in that case a disclaimer is a must. I would probably drop the reference remote wipe until I have the infrastructure in place.
    Cheers,

  • How do i consiolidate my photo masters in Aperture 3. I have a vault from Aperture 2 but 3 will not access it.

I use Aperture for photo editing and management and had been working in Aperture 2. I created a vault on my external HD to store my masters in. I had done something to my computer (not sure what) and ended up wiping my internal HD and reinstalling all of my software. After that I was not able to access my vault so most of my masters are basically gone. I attemped to move them with no luck. Frustrated by this point I upgraded to Aperture 3 thinking it would help me be able to get into the vault only to find out that 3 can not consolidate 2 vaults. I do not know what to do at this point but am really bummed to think that my masters may be gone forever. A hard way to learn that nothing in more secure than just saving the photos to DVD prior to Aperture...
Can anyone give me a clue on how I can recover my masters?

I don't have Aperture 2 so that I could check, but Aperture 3 vaults in  Mt. Lion do show the version number in the Finder, like this:
I will put Aperture 2 on another machine and that work on restoring the vault from there,
If you did all available upgrades and your vault is recent, it probably will have been created with the latest available Aperture upgrade, AP 2.1.4.
If you can restore the library this way, back it up, and then rebuild it, before moving it to your SL machine. To rebuild an Aperture library, hold down the Option and Command keys while opening your library in Aperture 1.5 or 2, then click the Rebuild Now button..

  • Certain master images are gone: how do I use my backup vault to restore?

Images stored in a folder (the little blue book icon) named Dogs is suddenly empty. Apparently the Masters are gone too. I have searched through the Library, in the original project, by date. They are gone.
(I think I know how I lost them — by renaming other images accidently keyworded as Dogs.)
But the issue is: how do I get back these images?
I have the Library backed up to a Vault on a dedicated external FW hard drive. I have read the posts about restoring the library, but am terrified to make a misstep, with all my images at risk.
I would very deeply appreciate advice on how to proceed — that is, use the vault to restore the lost images.
    Thank you very much.

Choose File>Vault>Restore Library. Aperture will show you an alert that your old library will be renamed. If this is OK click restore. After the restoration is complete Aperture will prompt you to relaunch Aperture. After relaunch you'll see another dialogue box. If everything is OK click Recover Now. The next feedback you'll get is Recovery Complete. Click OK and you're done.

  • Audit Vault Installation problem on windows platform

    Hello!
I'm trying to install Audit Vault 10.2.2 on windows platform. The installation procedure is successfull (there are no alerts about errors during installation). The enterprise manager is working at http://localhost:1158/em without any problem.
The installation guide says that audit vault console should work at http://localhost:5700/av, but this site is unreachable.
I tried to find out the problem, so I started avctl show_av_status
    The result is:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.Exception: Invalid Oracle JDBC url
    at oracle.av.avca.Commandarguments.setOracleProperties (Commandarguments.java:281)
    at oracle.av.avca.Commandarguments.processArguments(CommandArguments.java:667)
    at oracle.av.avca.Avctl.startCTL(Avctl.java:70)
    at oracle.av.avca.Avctl.main(Avctl.java:318)
(avctl start_av results the same problem)
Could you help me to solve this problem? Please!

I'd like to help you but it seems to me, from the perspective of the purpose of Audit Vault, that putting a secure repository on top of an insecure operating system is a non sequitur.
Thus all of my installs have been on Oracle Enterprise Linux and I've never seen any installation-related issues such as you are reporting.
If you can I would suggest getting, as they say, "a real operating system."
Performance will improve, hardware utilization will improve, security will improve, and as an additional advantage, this issue will disappear.

  • How to delete projects from Vault

    Ok, here is the issue.
I work remotely on a laptop and my main library and vault are on my home computer.
I only keep the last couple of projects on the laptop and use the vault to backup those projects. I used managed files.
When I get home from the road, I export/import the projects to the home machine and master library to do further work and use vault on an external for backup.
So, on the laptop, I will delete projects to make more space on the hdd and I dont need them on the laptop any longer (they are already in the master library and vault at home).
However, the problem is that when I delete those projects and then update the vault, it does not seem to delete those projects in the vault. So the vault just keeps growing in size until it fills up and I cant seem to delete those projects from the vault. Again, both the laptop library and the laptop vault are simply for backup while on the road so I'd like to have the vault on the portable be able to stay synced with the library on the laptop. When I delete a project, it does the same in the vault to keep the external space consistent as well.
Is there any way to do this? Shouldnt the vault basically just back up the library and when something is deleted from the library it should be deleted from the vault as well?
As it is, I need to delete the entire vault when it fills the external and create a whole new one after deleting the projects from the library.
    Is there an easier way?

I have not contacted AppleCare, but will if this is how its working for others.
Have you tried this and are sure it is working that way? After all, last week after deleting three projects from the laptop and main library and then updating the vault, I had a vault that was over 80 gigs in size while the library was now less than 20 gigs in size.
After deleting the vault and starting a new one, the new vault was approximately the same size as the library, actually slightly smaller like it is with the master vaults at home with the main library.
I have twice now had my external fill up with the vault while I had been constantly deleting old projects on the laptop. So it just seemed to keep adding new stuff to the vault, but not get rid of the old that I was deleting.

  • Aperture 2.1.2 crashing constantly, will not allow me to move library/ create vaults

Hi, I've searched for threads on this, but nothing came up with my particular situation. First, I'll state my specs
    iMac 24" (aluminum)
    3.06GHz Core2 Duo
    4GB RAM
    500GB HDD
So, after much procrastinating, I decided this weekend that I would organize my photos better, and move my growing Aperture library off my internal drive in hopes of speeding up my recently lagging computer. I migrated from iPhoto to Aperture back in August of 2008 and have always been meaning to make a vault of all my old work and just store that offsite somewhere so I don't have to worry about the disk space or losing the files. But I never got around to it.
So now my Aperture library is 35,000 photos large, and weighs in at 302GB.
The first thing I tried to do (before I even knew Aperture was going to start crashing) was to move the Aperture Library file from its default location in the users/pictures folder to one of my external 1.5TB drives. However, the transfer would fail around 6GB in and say "some files could not be read or written." I tried several times to no avail.
Giving up that route, I read around online and decided that I could just make a vault of my entire library on the external drive, then create a new library there, and restore from the vault.
So I open Aperture to try and make a vault. It "unexpectedly quits" right when the interface loads. I tried again and got as far as naming the new vault, then it crashed again. Now it crashes even if I am trying to just view my images. I went on a short roadtrip with friends and got back last night, and it crashed halfway through the import of 400 images, but finished importing when I reopened it. I don't know if that's what started off the whole thing.
Anyway, I noticed that I only had 4(!)GB of space left on my internal drive, so I did some quick cleaning and rearranging to external drives and freed up about 45GB of space. I figured that would give the app plenty of room to breathe.
    Nope. Still crashes.
    Rebooted several times, no help.
    Reset PRAM several times, nada.
I am in real trouble here. I'm a photography student with three studio classes this quarter and I can't have this happening. I paid top dollar for this machine less than six months ago and now it's puttering along like it's 2 or 3 years old. When Aperture is open (when it would still work) the rest of the computer would just slow to a crawl. I have 4GB of RAM, why doesn't Aperture use more? I was reading that it would only use 1 or 2GB max. Why?
But that part is not important.
I need to get this fixed, so ANY help is GREATLY appreciated! I have the crash report saved from the last crash, so if anyone wants to see any part of it, let me know. It told me which thread caused the crash but it looked like generic usage stuff, nothing special (I was just trying to look at my trip photos).
    Thanks in advance,
    Screaming in Savannah
    (Chris)

This is awkward. Right... I have used Aperture since it came out.
In fact, after all these failures, you should try the rebuilding your library first.
Hold down Option and Command when launching Aperture, though you couldn't back up your files... which was recommended by Apple before you rebuild it.
It should correct and repair any broken links or permissions. See if it works.
After, you can simply COPY and not MOVE the library to the external HD. Do you use Firewire? It's much better and reliable. After the library is copied, point Aperture to use the external HD in preference. Close and reopen, it should open the library from the external HD.
The better bet is to make sure you are using an external HD with Firewire 800. I have some experience with USB2 drives when Aperture crashes a lot. It may seem some kind of bandwidth problem which I couldn't understand. It seems find with small jpg files but if you start importing RAW or do something with the RAW files, USB drives always fail.
I have moved my library to an external drive since Aperture 2 as my library has grown beyond the internal capacity. My standard practice is now, after working the files, export them in TIFF or JPG, export the 'Project' with the RAW files to DVDs, remove from the library and re-import the JPGs back to keep the library size. Also I keep two faults in separate locations.
    I hope it works.

  • How long should it take for a new vault to be created?

I have a late 2009 27" iMac i7 with 16GB of RAM. I use referenced masters. The masters are located on a Drobo connected with FW 800. The internal drive on the iMac is a 1TB drive. The Aperture library is located on that drive and is 158.39 GB. I have about 110,000 master images. Most of them are RAW files shot with a succession of Nikon bodies (D100, D200, D300, and D400). I am in the process of moving a vault off of the Drobo and onto another external hard drive. I started the vault creation on Friday morning (3 days, 6 hours ago) and Aperture shows that it is still working on it.
I have read the germane threads and have given it over three days now to complete. There is very little, if any, progress on the visual indicator that the task is nearing completion. It shows the job as about halfway done. However, Aperture still shows as responding in the Force Quit menu. Aperture is currently using up 11.2 GB of available RAM. Normally, I don't have any memory swaps. Now, page ins are 13,418,681, page outs are 7,226,523, and swaps are at 43.70 GB. CPU utilization shows Aperture consistently at about 170% of capacity.
I really don't want to force quit Aperture for fear of what state it might leave my database. On the other hand, I need my machine and I can't use it until this process finishes or I force quit it.
How do I know if Aperture is actually doing something or is it stuck in an infinite loop? What are the repercussions of doing a force quit? How long should I wait to see if it will actually finish on its own accord?
Any insights, comments, or solutions would be greatly appreciated.
    Rick

    Rick-
You are not being ignored. I for one just do not know what to say because it depends on how badly you need the use of the Mac and how at-risk your data are. One thought would be to just use the Mac (letting Aperture page out while other apps use the RAM) but that is a risk if the RAM is frozen for some reason. It does sound like you may have a memory leak.

What I do not understand is what you mean by "moving a vault off the Drobo." I would think that if you are making a new Vault that would involve the internal drive and the new drive, no major interaction with the very slow Drobo except to point to Masters there (I could be wrong).
Also could some of your files be managed on the Drobo rather than referenced?

  • Lion OSX File Vault and filesharing with unencrypted users/computers

How does File Vault 2 work in the following Use-Case?
User A, has full disk encryption through File Vault enabled on a MacBook Air.
User A has an Microsoft Excel file that has been stored in his/her Documents Folder on their encrypted drive.
User A wants to share this file with User B so that User B can finish entering data and adding some calculations.
User B is a Windows 7 PC with no disk encryption.
User A drops this file on a WIndows file server that both User A and User B has access to.
This file server is not an encrypted system.
Will the act of User A dropping the file on the file server automatically unencrypt the file so the User B can open the Excel file and work with it?

The files don't get passed as an encrypted object. They get passed as files. The encryption/decryption works at a level that is transparent to just about everything, includingthe file system.
So, no, the file is not encrypted when you drop it onto a file server.

  • Can't update vault after upgrading to aperture 3

I upgarded from aperture 2 or 3. When I go to update my vault it says "The vault "Aperture" could not be updated because the file system of the vault's volume is not supported."
The vault is located on my external HDD, formatted fAT32. It's always worked with w/ Aperture 2 just fine...

Try formatting a disk for OSX and using it with a Windows machine. Try using a Windows machine to format a disk for OSX. IOW: at least OSX will read and write FAT32. IMHO your vault should be on a dedicated drive anyway.

  • Can I move photos from one computer to another using Vault?

Can I move photos from one computer to another using Vault?  I use an external hard drive as a vault for my Imac and I want to import photos to my Macbook pro.  I have aperture 3 on both units.  Can I just plug the ext. drive into the laptop and import from the vault?

You can't import from the vault but you can restore that vault onto the MBP. This will restore the complete library that is contained in the vault.
