Vault storage

With multiple vaults available for backup, does Aperture backup entire Library to each vault, or is total Library divided proportionally to the amount of available capacity?
I'm at "critically low disk space" on my Mac HD (where original Vault was created); I did get a Western Digital My Book Pro 250 G about 2 months ago and created vault there, but when I hit update vaults, I keep getting error. If entire Library is saved in both places now that I have two vaults (at least up until my last backup with the WD external Drive), can I just delete the Mac HD vault?
Thanks in advance

Here is what I do. Frankly, I am not sure this is a great solution, but it is the one I use (and I would be happy to hear from others how it could be improved)
I had begun making backups of Projects on an external hard drive in addition to the vaults. I use "Export Project" (i think that is what it is called) and then I delete the project from the active Aperture library on the main computer and then resave the Vault. I also save the folder of original RAW files on an external drive.
At the end of the day I have a master back up of the original RAW files on Exteranl HD 1; (ii) a master backup of the specific project (i.e. the keepers + any versions I made) on External HD2. The Aperture library on my internal harddrive stays much smaller as I then delete the project. I then save to the vault which (at least I am pretty sure) saves only what is in the Library which is now smaller as a result of deleted Projects.
When necessary I simply go back and import the saved project back into Aperture to get at those images. Takes just a few minute to import the project again.
For accuracy I should tell you that I shoot kids sports and have a project for each game. At most, a project is 200-250 images. I generally go through this process a few months after the end of the sport season (so, for example in January I will go through this archive with respect to the football pics I shot all fall).
This certainly helps me with space on the hard drive in my mac (smaller Library), gives me adequate redundant backup (Project and if desperate RAW images) that is acceessible without much pain. BTW I also keep a DVD of the full RAW take from the shoot as a third "holy sh*t I am in trouble" backup.
Hope this helps.

  • Using Aperture 3 Vault storage

    Started to use Aperture 3 before accessing the Vault storage function. Bought an external hard drive to store my Aperture 3 photos. How do I now use the function of the vault storage within Aperture 3, and after getting the photos transferred to the external hard drive what is the process for future imported photos. Thanks for any help.

    Forgive me for stating the obvious, but RTFM! (Read the friendly manual!)
    Vaults are a back up device. They may, or may not be a good idea for you. Aperture is full of words, like "project," "album," "referenced" which have a very specific meaning in the context of Aperture and may not mean what you think they mean.
    For example, the number of people who go into a tailspin because they don't understand that "project" could have been called a "roll" or an "event" just as easily.
    These are arbitrary, not absolute, terms.
    So no, a vault will not do what you want. You are probably discussing setting up a "referenced" "library." Our own Sierra Dragon can help you do this.
    If you use a "referenced" library, then you will probably be happier with Time Machine or cloning software for backup. A vault is likely to be a poor choice for backup for a referenced library.
    All the best!

  • Wanted  hasslefree Vault storage for 2 computers each with Aperture

    I have a G5(10.4.1) and a MacBook Pro(10.5.2) each of which have Aperture 2.1.1 installed. I want to be free to load pictures into either computer and also want to take advantage of Aperture's Vaults. I understand that backing up differing libraries into the one Vault is not advisable.
    Is it possible to safely set up one or more libraries on an external hard drive so that they accessed by more than computer and when required these external library(ies) be backed up by a vault(s)?

    Aristophanes is absolutely right Aperture is no MSSQL, Oracle or DB2 Database so the concept of branching and merging if extremely difficult.
    It would add a LOT more $$$ to the cost of development and support.
    Photos properly encoded with the IPTC and Exif data are actually excellent from a metadata perspective. However, any circumstance I can foresee would have to be strict chronological ordering as photos are shot in a linear fashion.
    However: Imagine a photo shoot where 2 cameras are at work in hi-speed mode. Identical model cameras creating similarly named (if not identical) files in an almost simultaneous environment. That's fashion photography and the kind of pro market Aperture is aimed at. That's one example that could break the paradigm's back.
    I would like to see a tentative step whereby a user can designate a single project as fluid and sync it within a strict chronological, linear uplink. Sort of an auto upload and update feature complete with field edits, deletions (optional), etc. We're on the verge of Wi-fi enabled cameras as an integral function anyway.
    Given this, It would be nice to see Aperture have a one way migration tool that takes ALL Folders / >Projects / Etc and moves them in one hit back to the main library (ONE WAY Transfer). If the same >name existed at the same level in the Main Library then Suffix with a 2 etc.
    Absolutely. Vaults already are a one-way self-contained copy.

  • Using HD on AiportExtreme for vault storage

    Seting up another Aperture Vault and want to use an external USB drive on my extreme or TC basestation.
    Is there any problems in creating a vault over the wirleless network?

    Who reported the error, Aperture, Finder or something else?
    One drawback to this setup is you do need to make sure the drive is awake and conected. Before I run the vault I access the drive via the Finder to make sure it is in this state. But once the connection is established I've never had the drive disconnect before the operation was complete.
    As I wrote in my frst post you may want to conect via cable when you create and populate the vault for the first time. It will go faster.
    good luck

  • Using BAPI_DOCUMENT_CREATE2 to create a document and checkin to VAULT

    In a development we are using the function module BAPI_DOCUMENT_CREATE2
    to create a document and check in the original file into the R/3 storage
    system in one go (see subroutine below).
    However, we got the requirement to use a Vault ("Tresor") as the storage
    backend. Unfortunatly, just setting the documentfiles-storagecategory element to 'VAULT' results in 3 things:
    - the document gets created OK
    - the original file does NOT get checked in
    - the error message "Original 1 wurde bereits eingecheckt und abgelegt" (...has already been checked in)
    So please advise how to use the BAPI modules to achieve the checkin into
    a Vault storage.
    Could this have something to do with the undocumented documentfiles-originaltype element? What does this have to be set instead of the '1', thats working with SAP-SYSTEM storage?

  • What the best way for STORAGE the documents from DMS?

    Please, can someone tell me if the limit of storage the originals through a data carrier is two for document or i can to large this limit? 'Cause i know that using Kpro i don't have limit of storage, but i'm trying to use the data carriers 'cause i just have a place in the company server for storage this originals.
    I'm trying to send the originals from a path like this
    abcs01\dms$\ through of a configuration "servidor, front ends", but i'm not get to send the originals from CV01N for this place, even the document been save. I verify that the documents were not sent when i enter from the CV02N in the same document and try to change or screen the originals, 'cause i receive a error message saying that the SAP doesn't get to find the originals on the path indicated.
    Did someone just work on a likely situation?
    Did someone have a view about the best way to storage this documents in this case?
    If the best way will be KPRO, Do I use KPRO with the Content Server or KPRO with storage the documents in a SAP table through of the standard system aplication "DMS_C1"?
    Any idea will be welcome and reward by good points!
    Best Regards.

    Hi,
    The decision to go for either content server or vault depends on what data will be stored. If you are storing drawing data it is highly recommended to go for content server.
    For vault storage performance issues are reported.
    DMS_C1 is IDES based BSP database repository. It is useful only for dev/testing.
    You will be required to create storage repository for CS.
    If you have server available when you insert content server CD inside it, it automatically asks you for maxDB database instance creation. As you click on next it will take you further to create maxDB instance. K-Pro is service on web server. It is used to manage the checkin-checkout and other functionalities of the CS server data.
    BR,
    Anirudh,
    reward if useful.

  • After inserting editable regions, DW CS3 tells me none exist...?

    I am having muliple problems with templates on this particular project, that I have never seen before. I was going to break them into multiple
    questions, per the instructions here at the forum, but all of these relate to the same template code, which I will post below, so I think it would be
    more efficient to include the related questions in this thread.
    Background
    I created this template by first scraping the client's existing site, which is a dynamic CMS site, with HTTrack. Secondly, I opened the HTML file generated by that processs, and saved it as a template in my DW project, which automatically assigned it to the "Templates" folder, and is accessable via the "Assets" panel (usual stuff.)
    The reason for starting with a scraped version of existing is that this project involves moving the site off of the CMS platform and into HTML/CMS, yet preserving essentially the same design.
    1. The most obvious problem I have is that in the subject line: after adding a couple of editable regions to my template,
    when I save/preview, an error message comes up saying "your template has no editable regions, do you want to proceed?"
    2. In doing the save as template operation, I am prompted with "Update links?" and I do. When I open the template, all looks good in DW, however as soon as I do a preview, I get a completely raw html page with NO css styling, no images, no fonts, etc.  Conversely, if I do the same step, yet choose not to update links when prompted, then I get a template that looks completely bare in DW (no styling, no images, etc.) yet looks fine when previewed...?
    Additionally, one other thing I tried was doing the save as template, choosing not to update links, and then moving it out of the templates folder into the main project folder - Here, it both looks fine in DW, and previews, yet I am unable to use it as a template (does not appear in assets, cannot use "create new from" or "apply", etc.)
    I have also tried changing from "site root" to "document" in terms of linking, yet nothing has worked. Every time I have created a template on other projects, all has just worked fine from the start, so I am really stumped here.
    The project will have too many pages to not use a template for updates, so I am hopeful that I can figure out what is causing this. Following is my template code:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

    There are (or can be), of course, editable regions in the head of a document. Typically, around the <title></title> you will find 'space' to put links etc, and meta tags:
    <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="doctitle" -->
    <title> Your title here </title>
    <meta name="description" content="Description here." />
    <meta name="keywords" content="keywords here " />
    <meta name="robots" content="index,follow" />
    <!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
    Further down in this same document, I find:
    <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="head" -->
    <link href="styles.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
    <style type="text/css">
    <!--
    .style4 {color: #FFFFFF}
    -->
    </style>
    <script src="../Scripts/swfobject_modified.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
    <!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
    showing a stylesheet link and an embedded style.
    So it's not so much that you can't have editable areas in the head of the document, it's more that you can't overlap or improperly nest ANYTHING.
    You can also (am I repeating myself?) make a tag's attributes editable. I use that feature most notably for applying different IDs to <body> tags for different neighborhoods in my sites. By applying different body IDs, I can control more specifically elements on those pages. But that's a conversation for another time!
    Best,
    Beth

  • My structure, projects, albums disappeared

    I have about 23 projects and albums that i was happily working with till i mistakenly opened what is called vault.... now all my projects and albums have disappeared from the projects tag ( Inspector) and there is nothing i can do to get them back. I have hit about every option... I can create new projects. All my photos can be viewed when i highlight "Library" so they are obviously there, with their ratings and editions. It is as if all my structure and sorting has disappeared. when looking at my Library (in Inspector side bar) under 'all projects', the blue 'all photos', '4 stars' etc... they show a little wheel in the right lower corner. I do not know what that means or how I can undo this. Clicking on any of these brings up nothing but a black screen in the main viewer... the only one that works clicking is the label "All Projects" , which brings up the main screen with my stacks of project pictures .... I am unable to get rid of the marking Vault, on the bottom of the projects inspector panel.
    What can I do to get my projects back in the inspector panel? ( I do not have a vault set up, since I mistakenly thought I could use Idisk (cloud) for vault storage, but Aperture wants an external hardrive which i do not have with me since i am traveling.

    hi, angelis
    close aperture. and located your original aperture library (maybe in your Picture's folder) and double clicked on it's icon. this will open your library and should get you back on track.

  • FrameMaker 8 on XP and Softech's ProductCenter

    Is anyone using FrameMaker 8 on Windows XP and SofTech's Product Center? We are importing FrameMaker documents into FrameMaker files by reference and then attempting to enter these files into our vault storage. When storing the hierarchy, the process crashes Frame.
    Wondering if anyone else is doing this.

    Have you triple-checked to be sure that all of the files have been saved in FM before the check-in process is started?
    Also, how about things like paths --  are all the component files (e.g. graphics, FM files, whatever is part of the FM document set) in the same directory, all on the same system? Or are some files accessed from non-local directories, network file shares, or something like that?
    Does the process work with any FM files at all -- or is it completely broken? e.g. if you make a brand new document without any significant content, no graphics, just a simple doc, does the original check-in work by itself?
    Can you identify any correlation between when these crashes started, to pin it down to a date range, and then maybe your IT could see if that syncs with any of the MS security patches.
    I guess what I'm trying to suggest is try to break down the steps to the most simple operations, to see if you can identify whether there's some trigger point between when it works vs. not.
    There are so many other possibilities with a server app, it's difficult to make troubleshooting suggestions.
    I understand trying to do some pre-emptive troubleshooting, but my gut tells me that this might be a significant enough issue that the vendor might have trouble reports from other users.

  • Storage solutions for Aperture Library & vault??

    My Aperture library has grown to over 400 GBs and I am concerned about storage as it grows larger week by week. I have been using two 500 GB firewire 800 drives, one for the library and one for vault. Today I purchased a 1 Terabyte drive for the library, it works well and I actually see a speed improvement. I will pick up another next week for the vault.
    Aperture lumps all of the data in one folder therefore requiring the size of our hard drive to keep pace with the Library. I need a different solution than replacing firewire drives with larger capacity ones every three to six months.
    My main requirements are speed and expandability. I do not want to keep several aperture libraries, to me this defeats the purpose of an image database.
    I have heard the pros and cons of raid and I do not think it's the best solution for an Aperture based system. Sata sounds interesting and seems that it may become more standard. I have also read about using an out-dated mac as a server by installing several hard drives and connecting it to the workstation by gigabyte ethernet. I would like to have my library on a very fast connection, firewire is fine for the vault. I am wondering what others are doing in the same situation as mine and if you might have any advice.
    With the purchase of the 1TB drives I figure that I will be fine until mid to late summer, by that time Apple will have their new desktop available which I plan to purchase. It might be best to see what the machine will or will not support. Any thoughts?........
    G5 dual 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    As the previous poster said: this is an Apple problem that needs to be solved. I might add, it probably will be in the near future. So, you should try to scrape by for the next few months as best you can and wait and hope and pray for a solution from Apple.
    With DVD and Firewire drives backing up your original you are well--probably over--backed up. One copy on DVD is more than sufficient for your originals. Make more backups of the Aperture library which includes your original file and your time consuming metadata and adjustments.
    RAID 0 is risky because if a single drive goes then you loose everything! There are other RAID schemes that make your system more dependable. RAID 1 mirroring is safer but doesn't expand your storage capacity.
    RAID 3 & 5 are both more dependable and give you bigger working volumes but there is a lot of processor work going on to calculate parity (error correcting and data recovery information) that is spread across several drives. If you use Mac OS X RAID or Soft RAID that processor power comes from you computer's CPU--which probably has enough work to do already without having to crunch numbers for every byte that goes to/from your hard-drive.
    RAID 3 & 5 are good systems if you have hardware to to the parity calculation but they each require a minimum 4 drives to make a set--which you don't want to use as a boot drive. That means you would need 5 drives inside your G5 of a combination of internal and external drives.
    A cleaner solution might be getting a Wiebe Tech Siver SATA V case and port multiplier card (about $1500 w/o drives). That will give you a good fast connection for 5 external hot-swappable drives. Then use Ben Long's library spanner to get you by until Apple comes to the rescue with a multiple drive library.

  • Backup Storage - Aperture Vault versus Time Machine versus daily SuperDuper

    What value does dumping the Aperture library to an Aperture Vault give in addition to running Time Machine to one drive and a daily SuperDuper copy to a second drive with irregular SuperDuper copies to an external drive that can be removed from the machine room.

    SImon,
    Vault and Time Machine address different needs. Probably you will want to have both.
    The advantage of Time Machine: incremental backups of previous versions, very compact storage. And you can integrate it into your regular backup of the whole system and include the regular masters as well. But the disadvantage: Time Machine decides for you, what will be deleted, if the backup drives get full. You do not have control over what will be saved and what not from the previous versions.
    The advantage of vaults: You can make full backups of your library for well defined moments in time - snapshots of important states. I'd create a vault, whenever I make a major upgrade of the system at least.
    Is there anyway of cancelling a stuck Vault update other than the sledgehammer approach of Force Quit?
    If the graphical user interface is unresponsive, like when updating a vault, you can use the Terminal to send the "termination signal" to Aperture: Sometimes this will succeed, even if the "Quit" button does not work:
    Look for the Process ID of Aperture in the Activity Monitor (launch Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor" and click the CPU heading. This will bring Aperture close to the top of the list. Make a note of the PID number in the first column, in this case 66550.
    Launch a Terminal window and enter the following command:
    kill -TERM 66550           (insert Aperture's PID instead of 66550)
    This will send the "Software Termination Signal - TERM to Aperture, the same as pressing the "Quit" button should do, but send it directly, and not from the GUI that is unresponsive. This way I always succeded in cancelling a vaul update without force quitting. Not all processes can be terminated this way, however. The Terminal.app is also in the Applications > Utilities folder.

  • Bt Vault closing but given less storage on BT Clou...

    I can't believe this is right... Sorry my first post so be gentle.
    I have just signed up to BT Infinity 3 within the last 6 months.  For all it's faults one of the reason that I went to this package was the free(?) 5GB of online storage through Bt Vault.  I am signed up for 12 months but BT are closing (not amending but closing) the BT Vault service.  In its place I get 2GB (note reduction) of BT Cloud storage.
    To get any more storage (i.e. at least the amount I had) I have to extend my contract for a further 12 months.
    Am I the only one that believes this to be at best unfair?

    Maybe you are better off with a free alternative.   I just noticed as I replied to this that Google Drive is about to go up to 15GB free, and there are lots of others that offer 5GB or more free.  IDrive is one I found excellent even though I no longer use it for various reasons.
    Of course, it depends exactly what you want out of a service, and maybe Google Drive won't suit you.  But from reviews, BT Vault did't exactly deliver, and BT Cloud certainly doesn't.
    If you've got files in BT Vault that are archive rather than backup, I hope you manage to get them off in time.  Other posts on this forum indicate that it can be a difficult task.

  • When using Vault in Aperture, is the storage incremental or is it replacement?

    I like the backup feature of Vault, but don't know if i need to keep the external hard drive mounted for incremental backups or if I can dismount and store until I feel another backup is necessary. I like the idea of incrementals, but if it isn't the way it works, I can save wear and tear on the drive as well as electricy, by removing it. Suggestions?

    For incremental's on a Mac it is hard to beat Time Machine.  TM will backup external drives as well as the internal
    There are two concerns with digital images, the originals as they come out of the camera and the work you do to them after they are in Aperture.
    While loosing an Aperture library would be painful it can be recreated as long as you have the originals. So the first step is to backup the originals, I backup my originals while importing them into Aperture (there is a setting in the import pane to make this simple)
    Then I have two vaults on separate drives for each library and finally I have TM running.
    Finally backups are no use if when you need them you find out they weren't doing what you thought so every now and again restore from one of your backups to make sure it is useable. The time to find out it is not useable is not when you really need it.
    I move my active library out and restore one of my backups and use that as the new active. This way I know for certain the backup will function as it should,
    regards

  • Storage use for BT Digital Vault

    I am using about 29% of my 50Gb allowance and have my desktop computer and my laptop PC backing up to the service. The desktop is fine but on the laptop, although it does seem to be backing up files, I am getting a message which says "100% storage use - total use 0kb of 0Kb". Can anyone please explain why this is and whether it is a cause for concern?
    Thank you!

    You have probably selected too many files for backup on the laptop.
    Auto-backup checks to see if there is enough room, before it starts to backup, otherwise it gives the error message.
    Try selecting just a couple of files to start with, just to make sure it is working.

  • Aperture Vault & Time Machine on same external drive?

    I learned from an Aperture ProLab teacher that using Time Machine as a backup for my Aperture library is not always successful (something about the packaged file format?) - and it was recommended that I use the Vault in Aperture.  Is it possible (and how, if so) to partition my external drive to be used with both Time Machine (to back up my entire hard drive) and Aperture's Vault?

    Jessica-
    I don't see why not, if the external is really large. Just partition using Disk Utility.
    However personally I recommend buying additional hard drives rather than partitioning. Mass storage is now cheap. We always grow into hard drive space anyway, and there is a design elegance to having spearate physical drives. Design elegance in backup routines tends to lead to less errors.
    I buy quad-interface drives from OWC
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/
    for connection speed as well as flexibility in repurposing drives, but for backup-only cheaper USB (slower) drives from Newegg or Deal.com also are ok. Just look at cost per GB to find drives of best value.
