Vbios failing on a macbook pro

Hey everyone. I'm working through my first install of Arch on my macbook pro and I ran into a problem. I want to use ATI's catalyst drivers, these require BIOS, but my computer has EFI and Arch tells me that Vbios fails each time I boot.
I'm dual booting OS X 10.4 and Arch with refit. I thought I read somewhere that the new firmware for the macbooks automatically emulates BIOS if need be. If this is the case I'm wondering why my Vbios keeps failing. If the firmware does not emulate BIOS is there a way I can get BIOS emulation without a reinstall?
Thanks in advance.

I would recommend dropping EFI entirely. Yes, you can still run OSX on an MBRed Mac. You can not install to an MBRed hard drive, but you can push an image. I did it by simply making an image of my OSX partition on my EFI MBP, cleared off EFI and setup the hard drive as a normal, MBRed hard drive, and then pushed the image back on.
Here's a how to I put together a while back.

  • Trying to replace a failed hard drive Macbook Pro 17 2011

So, my Hitachi 750 GB HD just failed on my Macbook Pro 17" (2011).  I bought a new Travelstar 1 TB 7200 RPM HD and have installed it without an issue (very simple to do).  BUT, I do not have any install disks to use to install the OXs.  This laptop originally had Mountain Lion installed, which I upgraded to Mavericks via iTunes.  How can I install the OXs and then proceed to formatting the new HD?  Am I going to have to call Apple to see if I can get install disks for Mountain Lion?  Can I somehow create my own install disks from a Mavericks download?  I'm pretty new to Macs, being a PC person, so not sure how to proceed at this point.  Thanks for any help you can give me!
    Patty

Okay. So I was able to install, and format the new internal HD. Was able to install Lion then Mavericks.  Next, is to try to retrieve my data from my failing old HD.  I bought an enclosure (sled), and have my HD hooked up to my laptop, and it finally showed up in Finder.  So.  Now.  What is next?  I am seeing a screen that shows these folders:  Applications (translate for the PC me = Programs), Library (I am assuming?? these are my various files such as docs, photos, music, etc.) System, opt, and Users.  Should I just try to drag and drop some/all of the folders onto my desktop, then open up the folders and do something with the contents?  Sorry to sound so vague and frankly, rather dumb-sounding, but the nomenclature with a Mac is a bit different than with a PC, and Finder is a little different looking to me than Windows Explorer.  I am relieved to see that I was even able to get this failing drive to show up in the first place, so I feel a little like I could be on borrowed time with it.  I think it may just be bad sectors, since I don't hear any clicking or other mechanical issues with the drive as it spins.  But, any further help with retrieving the data would be VERY much appreciated!!

  • CS6 install fails on Retina Macbook Pro

CS6 install fails on Retina Macbook Pro (10.8.2)
I downloaded the CS6 Design and Web Premium trial and attempted to install. It downloaded fine and I can open the .dmg file, but the instant I click the Install application I get the error message "Installer failed to initialize. Please download Adobe Support Advisor to detect the problem." I did as it said but it detected nothing. I deleted the trial and downloaded the Master Collection CS6 trial to see if the result was any different.... it wasn't. Got the same error message. I looked though other forums and tried their methods to fix this but I have had no luck. Time is kind of, of the essence. Start school in a few days and a Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator class is difficult without Photoshop, InDesign or Illustrator.
    Anybody know what to do?
    -Dylan

I did try a new account and it failed.
I seem to have found a workaround. I used the application manager linked HERE and my issues have been resolved. I was able to install all of the CS6 programs with that Manager. Must have been giving me corrupt files or the manager itself was corrupt.
Everything downloaded, installed, and updated perfectly. All I did was make sure I had every trace of previous attempts deleted off my computer then downloaded the app manager.
Very weird fix but I'm happy it worked. Thanks.

  • Installation fails on new Macbook Pro

I am trying to install CS3 on a new Macbook Pro Retina 13" with Mavericks. All of the CS3 apps except Photoshop installed correctly. Photoshop fails and when I try to launch it returns a message that it cannot be initialized because the disk is not available. I have tried reinstalling it and the installation fails. I tried launching the old copy from the previous computer's disk (now in USB enclosure) and I get the same error message. I tried copying it over to the new HD without success. Tried phone support and they won't help because it's an older version. CS3 is supposed to be compatible with Mavericks. Since the older copy and the new installation return the same message, I suspect (just a guess) some software issue, perhaps prefs or other files copied over from the old installation.
Can anyone help me figure out what the issue is, and how to go about installing PS successfully?
    Thanks!

Mike, that did the trick. I trashed the entire Photoshop CS3 Settings under the existing account, then created a new user and installed from there. Installation was successful. Then I went back to my existing account and it launched fine from there as well. A new Settings folder was created automatically and I'm good to go now. This was a huge relief - I was stressing. Also, I'm not sure if it's the performance of the new computer or if the prefs were the issue, but it is lightning fast now. It launches in a couple of seconds whereas on the older machine it was taking a couple of minutes. I really appreciate the help!

  • Request for advice: TM/TC fails on one Macbook Pro, but not the other?

Dear All- looking for some advice.
Background: I installed a 1TB TC about 3 months ago to improve the wireless connectivity around the home/small business and to act as 1 stop backup- primarily for 2 main Macbook Pro’s. Everything seems to work fine, with the exception that the time machine will only successfully back up one Macbook Pro (my wife's) and not the other (mine). In fact I have NEVER been able to get a full successful backup for my machine since I bought my TC.
Scenario: My wireless router from my TC services 2 Macbook Pro’s, 1 iMac, iPhone, Sony PSP, Sony PS3 etc. All successfully and at a good speed. The TC also runs time machine for backups on the 2 Macbook Pros. One MBPro (my wife’s), has worked like a charm and flawless (pre Oct 2008 model 4.1, 2.5Ghz Intel core 2 Duo, 4GB (667MHz)DDR2 SDRAM, OSX 10.5.8, 250GB HD, 512MB video). TM Backup over wireless to my TC works great. While the other (mine) I have NEVER been able to get a successful backup once (MBPro post Nov 2008 model 5.1, 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB (1067MHz) DDR3 RAM, OSX 10.5.8, 300GB HD, 768MB Video).
Problem: I have tried a number different combinations of backup without success. I have diligently read numerous posts before coming here. My attempts include, preferences resets, full disk erases (re-named the disk several times), wireless connectivity, hardwired connectivity (i.e no other devices connected), some software running/ no software running, in sleep mode/without sleep mode, all at once backup or intermittent backups.
All provide me with the same message that it is not able to complete a full backup due to a writing error ‘Backup Failed’. At this stage I would not be convinced that the TC is actually working properly, with the exception that it works flawlessly with my wife’s Macbook Pro (yes every time I erase the drive) and that the wireless connectivity is great. My account preferences and setup/access for the TC/TM are identical to the machine that works. The volume I am trying to backup on my machine is ~258GB, while my wife’s machine that works is only around 78GB. I thought this may still be the source of the failure, but cannot see a work around or why.
Considering I bought the TC to allow a solid reliable backup, I am still unhappy and would like to continue to work for a resolve. Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the discussions, xSDP!
Apologies if you have already tried this, but I couldn't find it in your detailed list of prior actions.
Note the exact name of your hard drive on your computer. If you haven't changed this, it will be named Macintosh HD
Open Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Click on the icon on the left side of the window that has the exact same name as your hard drive on the desktop
    Click Repair Disk Permissions
It will probably take several hours to do this, so allow plenty of time.
Once the process is complete, see if you can backup now.

  • "Dispatcher failed to initialize" macbook pro, snow leopard?

I'm trying to install my sims 3 game on my laptop. i have a macbook pro with snow leopard software or whatever. (version 10.6.8). i already have it installed on my desktop computer but i'm moving soon and will not be taking my desktop with me. everytime i try to install it on my laptop it comes wup with "dispatcher failed to initialize." i know there were problems with the lion software, but i assumed snow leopard would be fine? help please??

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Lion install fails on my MacBook Pro

I downloaded Lion to my MacBook Pro and when it completed downloading it went to install and now I get the error that the install failed and the HD is damaged and can't be repaired.  The only option is try again and that ends up in the same results/ message.  How can I recover previous OS?
    Charles

If you are running OS X 10.7.5, make sure that you have the correct version of AiPort Utility liked below:
AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion
You may have downloaded AirPort Uility 5.6.1, which is not the right version for Lion.
If you have moved to Mountain Lion 10.8.x, you will need to use a workaround to install AirPort Utilty 5.6.  See this article for details:

  • Clicking, beeping, and failing of 13" MacBook Pro HDD

    I have a 13" MacBook Pro that uses a 250GB Hitachi HDD (model: HTS545025B9SA02, revision: PB2AC60Q).
For the past month or so, I have started "docking" the laptop. That is, I use external keyboardmousedisplay and close the lid of of the MBP. That is when I notice the occasional clicking (I believe it's because the head is parked, similar sound to when you pick up the laptop too fast. But this noise happens with zero vibration in the environment) and beeping. At first, it did not bother me much but it happened more frequently. At one point, I was transferring file from the laptop to a networked machine and the laptop made louder "reading" noise (my drive is under 40% used).
Given these events, I downloaded the S.M.A.R.T util from Apple and it says it is "FAILING." Is this a good enough justification to take it to the store and ask for replacement (under warranty now)?
One more significant observation is that when I use the external display AND the laptop display, the clicking (head parking) noise seems to disappear. It seems the firmware is not ready to operate the computer when lid is closed but connected to external display?
Thanks in advance and I hope this is not too much rambling.

Yes. If SMART says it’s failing, it is failing.

  • Thunderbolt display-connected keyboard fails to wake MacBook Pro

I'm having intermittent problems with my keyboard when I use my rMacBook Pro in clamshell mode attached to an Apple Thunderbolt Display. With increasing frequency, when I sleep the Mac, close it and attach it to the display, I cannot wake up the computer using the Apple keyboard that is attached (USB) to the display. Unplugging and repluggin the keyboard does nothing.
I can wake up the computer with a Bluetooth keyboard & login (screensaver), and the Bluetooth keyboard continues to work fine. Nut the wired keyboard never works.
However, if I simply restart the Mac, the display-connected keyboard always begins working again.
I belive this rules out a hardware problem, but I'm open to suggestions. (It's happened repeatedly—maybe ten times over the last several months. But with increasing frequency.)
I can post console logs if that would help.
    Any ideas?

    Clinton,
Thanks for your interest in my question. I actually own a 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display, which works with other Retina Display Macbook Pro, but not mine anymore... That's why I suppose the problem comes from my laptop's thunderbolt ports.
    Any clue?
    Thanks very much in advance.
    Dominic

  • Time Machine restore failing after 08 MacBook Pro updated to Maverick.

    hi,
    I have a 2.53GHz processor intel core 2 duo. 4GB 1067MHz DDR3 MacBook pro, circa 2008, and running Lion since 2012.
I have been backing up using a 1TB time capsule for the last 2 years.
Now I have just had a clean install to Maverick OSX10.9.5, but cannot see any files in the time machine pre-dating the install.
when I enter the time machine, the date bar on the right shows all the old backup dates, and will 'scoot' back to them, but all the finder window images are black, and will not populate with any data at all.
I've tried restoring from applications - that doesn't work either.
I have tried using the migration assistant and that doesn't see any HD prior to the clean install.
its bugging and worrying me (lost baby photos drama)
notebook to notebook migration help page says something about the source OS needing to be Mountain lion or newer, but does this apply to time machine back ups as well?
I didn't have this information prior to the update. boo.
can anyone shed some light for me?

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.

  • Snow leopard install fails on 17" MacBook Pro

I left the install disk running then came back to see the Apple logo screen - the machine will not boot into OS X of any number. On second try, the installer ran into an error and reported that MacOS cannot be installed on this disk!
I used disk utility to repair disk - it was ok except for a mention that SUID file "system/libray/coreServices/remoteManagement/ARAAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAAg ent" has been mdodified and will not be repaired. As well, the boot support sections would be made as required.
I then repaired the permissions - there was nothing too out of place there.
I am now making a disk image of my drive incase anything worse happens.
Sure hope I don't have the pain of recovering all my email and setting, passwords and junk from my disk image - should I have to erase to do a "clean install"
I read that Apple recommended installing Snow Leopard over the existing OS .. and cleaned-up detrius from previous installs.
Soundl like I have some trojan in my remote management - or some system fault is interfering with the install.

No, it sounds like you either have corrupted files or a problem with the hard drive.
The SUID message is irrelevant. Unless you are maintaining Windows systems from a Mac you are not even using Apple Remote management. However, the error is not reported by Disk Repair. It would be reported by Permissions Repair. You need to do both:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
After you backup I would erase your drive and install Snow from scratch. I would reinstall your third-party software from scratch but avoid third-party add-ons such as contextual menu items, preference panes, startup items, login items, Internet plug-ins, input managers, and the like as some may or are not compatible with Snow.

  • Repeated computer 'freezing'. Is hard drive failing on my MacBook Pro 2006?

Over the past two weeks my computer has been 'freezing'; with increasing frequency. The entire screen freezes with the exception of the cursor - when moving it around the screen it highlights and unhighlights text. The only way to escape is to turn off the computer using the power button. The time between freezing events varies from 5 to 60 minutes or so. Is the hard drive beginning to fail? Or, is this some other issue?

Thanks for the advice. Is using Disk Utility from the OSX installation disc more helpful than what I did prior to posting my question here?>>>From Disk Utility on my computer I ran in this sequence: Verify Disk (no issues), Verify Disk Permissions (several issues listed - don't understand any of it) and finally Repair Disk Permissions (no issues listed after performing this).
    Thanks.

  • My name is Mike. I live in New Zealand. My username is waipukurau1. I downloaded MacBook booster from the prompts. Was this a good idea and good for my MacBook Pro? Please answer.

My name is Mike. I live in New Zealand. My username is waipukurau1. I downloaded MacBook booster. I write to ask was this a good idea? Was this good and correct for my MacBook Pro. Please answer.

    ashish35,
No one from Apple here - we're just users like you. All I can tell you is that electronic fail and with MacBook Pros (and most notebooks) the components are so integrated as to make a repair to the logic board practically impossible, hence the high prices charged for repairs.
Only you can decide if you want to have your computer repaired or put the money towards the purchase of a new computer. If you do decide to purchase a new unit I would suggest that you also purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan which increases your warranty from one year to three years.
    Sorry and good luck,
    Clinton
