VBR problems, wrong track length.

I have a problem. I listen to a lot of audiobooks for work. I like them to be organized so I rip them on the computer in WAV format. I then use Audacity to combine them into chapters. Here is where the problem with iTunes starts. I can import all of the audio tracks fine, but the track lengths are wrong. For example, when importing one track it says that it is 2:40:18 long. In reality it is only 43:24 long. The only way I have found to fix it is to have iTunes make a copy of it, but I don't want to do this for every track.
I know that it is an iTunes problem, because in the folder in Vista it says the correct length. It also says the correct length in; VLC Windows Media Player, Audacity, and every media program in Linux that I have used.
Is there a way to fix this?

  • 5800 shows wrong track length for MP3s with VBR

I have a Nokia 5800 "XpressMusic" with the current firmware 20.0.012.
Yesterday I converted some CDs using Nokias Music Software (shipping with the mobile).
I converted the CDs to MP3 with VBR 256KB/s.
When i play them on the 5800 a song with i.e. 3:50min length shows about 14:05min length.
When i try to scroll forward i can only do that in the first few mm up to where 3:50 would be. If i go beside that border it jumps to the end and skips the title.
Shouldn't a mobile with the name "XpressMusic" be able to display the real track length of a MP3 with VBR???

    Duplicate post.

  • Wrong track length listed

    Hi everybody,
So, I'm running iTunes 7.4.2, and several of my longer songs (generally over 10 minutes) have the wrong length listed. For example, I have one that is over 12 minutes long, but is only listed as 9:57.
I tried converting it to MP3 using the convert to MP3 function, but the new track had the same length as the old one.
Is there any way for me to fix this for this song and all the other ones in my library?
    Thanks in advance.

As of this week, with recently updated iTunes (7.4.2), I'm finding some songs (all mp3's) with a changed bit rate, now 64 bits and some longer songs (8 minutes +) with changed, incorrect times. Is there something going on here beyond an Apple bug fix, something I need to educate myself on to protect my files ?
I'm not sure what's causing these problems, but over the years I've seen plenty of reports of things like this. MP3s created with Audion using the included LAME encoder were notorious for incompatibility with iTunes a few years ago. I think the best thing to do is to keep a "virgin" backup of your music somewhere out of iTunes' or any other player's reach.
Can this, or any iTunes version actually corrupt previously recorded files ?
MP3s are somehow susceptible to corruption and damage, much more so than with other formats of music files. Determining whether any version of iTunes actually causes the damage or corruption is quite a difficult task. Actually, without having a safe backup of MP3s which have never been allowed into contact with iTunes, it's pretty much impossible to prove.
iTunes is my favorite player by a long shot, but the only application I trust with my master archive of FLAC files is foobar2000 (on my PC). I have this whole library backed up on different drives in my Mac in both FLAC and Apple Lossless formats, but the FLAC library will always be the one I rely on and use for transcoding to other formats.
For what it's worth, I don't really consider iTunes an "MP3" player anymore, and I suspect that Apple doesn't either. Nothing in iTunes in the way of MP3 support has changed or been improved in any way for literally years--unless someone has evidence to suggest otherwise. Starting with iTunes 7.x, I suppose the single exception would be that Apple figured out and implemented a way to analyze the gapless playback information stored in LAME-encoded MP3 files.
Finally, it's fair to comment that iTunes does alter audio files when the default settings are used. Adding MP3s to your library with Sound Check enabled, for example, actually alters the tracks' metadata without warning. Supposedly, when you turn Sound Check off, iTunes simply ignores the information it has written to the files, but the files remain altered and this can be easily proven by examing the files in other players such as foobar2000. A good rule to follow is to always be extremely careful when setting up iTunes in order to disable every possible function that has the ability to tamper with files before adding any files to the library.

  • How can you change track length times in itunes?

I use itunes now for all music media, and have gone to the extraordinary pains of sorting and importing all of my music so that it is now all digitally stored...
The curious thing is that in itunes, it reports some track lengths as being way longer than they actually are. It doesn't affect the playback, it just looks wrong in the listing in the library - for example - the U2 album, 18 singles, has some ridiculously long track lengths - like track 2 - Beautiful Day, which itunes says is 19:22 minutes. It plays normally, and ends after about 4 mins as it should, but is there a way to manually edit track length times?
I've tried fiddling with the Get Info tab - "options" where you have the start and stop times, but this doesn't make any difference at all to the track lengths as listed in the main library. Any ideas?

Most likely you converted these songs to MP3 VBR (Variable Bit Rate) using a program that does not properly set the VBR tags.

  • ITunes 6.0.2 shows incorrect track lengths, clips track when playing

I just upgraded to iTunes 6.0.2. In previous versions, iTunes would often show incorrect track lengths on longer tracks, but would play them all the way through, with the time remaining staying at 0:00 until the track finished playing. This new version simply cuts the track off at the incorrect endtime. For example, I have a track with a length of 17:33, but iTunes has always shown it as 17:28. No big deal, it would always play to the end. Now, the new version cuts it off abruptly at 17:28. There seems to be no way to correct the track length. Is there any way to fix the track lengths to their correct times, or get them to at least play all the way through?? These are custom mixes and not from commercial CDs, so simply re-ripping isn't an option.
    Snow iMac G3 500 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   384 MB RAM

I have recently accused Emusic.com of supplying truncated tracks only to find that Itunes 6.02 and 6.03 (Mac) is clipping the start and end of the tracks. The counter gives the correct length but the playing is not correct. Fade out / in are off. Playing the offending tracks in quicktime or any other player gives all the track music.
Looking deeper shows that the tracks in question are all VBR .mp3 tracks (Variable Bit Rate).
Solutions to date are to either play in another player (not ideal).
Convert the tracks to fixed bit rate .mp3 using the setting nearest to the highest variable bit rate. Amazingly this works even when the conversion is done in Itunes. Your file size should be same or larger to avoid quality loss.
On playing the tracks I have converted the counter in Itunes gives the same reading but the tacks are not truncated.
Some VBR tracks do not seem to have the problem but that is usually because the nature of the track makes it less obvious.

  • Incorrect Bitrate and Track Length

Many tracks in my iTunes library are being reported in the columns with false bitrates and track lengths. For example, some tracks are reported as being over 20 minutes long when they're actually only about five minutes in length. Also, many songs are showing up as 32kbps [CBR] when they are actually much higher VBR variable bitrates. I heard that this is a problem with VBR files using an old way of encoding. Is there a way to fix this without re-encoding my files?

I seem to have fixed this new problem on my own. I deleted everything on my iPod and then copied all of the files in my library from my PC back onto it. I think that after I updated/fixed all of my files, the Sync feature wasn't detecting that these files were actually modified and left the old improperly-working, outdated versions of them on there.

  • Remote control plays wrong track!?

hi, i have set up a DVD with four buttons playing 4 tracks, each of which has 1 chapter (or clip) and returns to the menu after playing. after i've burned the DVD and placed it into the DVD player, pressing the numbers 1 through 4 however causes the wrong tracks to play: for example pressing "1" plays track 1, pressing "2" plays track 3, "3" plays track 4, and "4" plays track 2!
I originally had the tracks arranged differently, where in the menu button 1 one was actually playing track 4, for example. but when i noticed this problem i went back and set it up so that track one contains clip 1, 2 contains 2 etc. hoping the problem had something to do with that.
it did not solve the problem...
can anyone tell me what i am missing here? i simpy want to have each corresponding track play accordingly when i click its number on my remote...
thx in advance for any help!
    frank

so the final question then is are all the assets in different tracks, and if so, what order are they in when you look in the outline view (top to bottom)?
ok, in outline view all tracks align (1-4) vertically, and each opens the appropriate asset in the track wiindow (bottom middle) when highlighted. so all seems logical right?
so i burned another one (fresh build - no recycled versions) and stuck it in the player - what happens? whn i am looking at the menu, and press "2" the dvd plays track 3... same problem, but check this out:
if i am watching one of the tracks (say 1) and i press number 2 on the remote the dvd jumps to track 2 (i.e. NOT 3) as it is supposed to... this works for all the other tracks also)
so it seems the incorrect jumping occurs only from the main menu.. though as far as i can tell that is clean. BTW this time i deactivated "auto assign" in the Menu> Settings pulldown before the build)
    hmm

  • ITunes convert to AAC cuts track length

    HELP!
    I can't figure this out!
If i have a 320kbps .mp3 or Apple Lossless file and I want to convert it to 256kbps AAC in iTunes.
iTunes then cuts the the track length down dramaticly from i.e. 4.34 min. to only 1.12 min. WHAT?
I looked at my import settings, and everything seems fine. I even tried to reset them to default for good measure, but still the same.
I have included screenshots. Apologies my settings are in danish, but im sure you guys can manage
    I am running iTunes 11.0.5

    Steeze,
Hooray!  Good thing we knew the Danish word for VBR.

  • Problems deleting tracks from itunes

I have a Mac, Iphone and Ipad. I have problems deleting tracks from iTunes. The issue I have is that tracks keep coming back. The issue goes something like this:
I delete a track from iTunes. I sync with an IOS device. On sync, iTunes says there are purchased items on the IOS device not present in your library, do you want to import them? I select no, then iTunes imports the tracks anyway! Essentially the track I deleted from iTunes, gets imported back in from an IOS device, every time.
This means I face the situation of having to delete tracks from all 3 devices, to stop them coming back. Am I doing something wrong?

There is a way to do this, kindof. See my post here.
The best way to do this if you want to be able to continue updating the Apple TV with new content would be to buy an external hard disk and keep all your movies (and the secondary library itself) on that disk. Then, when you want to add movies to the Apple TV, you would just connect the external disk, open the secondary library in iTunes, and add the movie into iTunes. The setting here that you need to be aware of is the "Copy to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" setting in iTunes Preferences > Advanced General. So long as this setting is on, any movie file that you add to the secondary library will automatically be copied by iTunes to your external drive. Once you're done syncing the Apple TV, and you verify that the movie file did in fact get copied to the external disk, you can delete the copy from the hard drive in your computer.

  • My long audiobook files are reduced to very short track lengths when synced with my iPhone

    Hi,
(I had a look for this post from somebody else but didn't see anything, apologies if I'm doubling up...)
I have a couple of audiobooks with loooong track lengths, like 10-11 hours per track. But when I sync them to my iPhone to listen, the tracks are cut drastically, only being about an hour each, meaning that I lose the other 10 hours or so of the chapter...
Is there a reason why this happens and does anyone know how to correct this problem?
    Cheers

Just to add to what ChrisJ4203 said.  You can sync them to your new computer using iTunes by selecting to Include Voice Memos on the Music tab of your iTunes sync settings and syncing.  However, you still need to re-establish syncing with the new computer without iTunes erasing all the iTunes media from your phone (as the warning mentioned).
If you copy your entire iTunes folder (not just your music) from your old computer to your new one, along with other non-iTunes media you may be syncing with iTunes (such as contacts, calendars and any photos synced to your phone from your old computer) by using migration assistant of following one of these methods: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527, then when you sync again with your new computer it will recognize your phone and sync as it did before.  You will still have to authorize the new computer for any Apple IDs used to purchase from the iTunes and App stores (in iTunes>Store>Authorize this computer).
After that you can sync your voice memos to your computer as mentioned earlier.
If you want to archive your voice memos before you do anything with iTunes, you can use a 3rd party program such as PhoneView or Touch Copy.

  • C.M.S. Track Length Issue: Enhanced C

    I am running C.M.S. Organizer v. 2.03.29 on a Win98SE, 256 MB, 800, MHz machine.
I have searched all the forums, helps, knowledge bases, etc. for this problem.
Whenever I want to rip the audio from an "enhanced" audio CD (one with videos and other content besides audio) the track lengths show up in C.M.S. organizer as "time left on cd", not as the track length. ( i.e track shows a length of the sum of all track lengths on the CD and the last track length will be correct.) I hate this and i cannot find any way to switch it back.
Is anyone else having this problem, or does anyone know how to fix it's?
    Thanks!!

Yeah, I think I'm having this problem too. It's happened with Linkin Park's 'Meteora' and Sum 4's 'Does This Look Infected?', both of which are enhanced. If the track goes on the player it will say something ridiculous like 28:52 when its actually about 3 minutes. Then when the track has finished it will just play nothing for the remainder of the time unless you skip it forward yourself, which is extremely annoying as I don't want to listen to like 20 minutes of nothing beofre the next track starts. The thing is, I think it happened when I used CDDB2 to get the CD information. Someone help!

  • How can I see track length in a playlist in music on iPad.

How can I see the track lengths in a playlist in music app on iPad the new version ios7, it was fine before. I use it for my work and need to see at a glance the length of all the tracks in a playlist so I can decide what track to play. Thanks

You can only add folders to the email account if it is an IMAP account. If you see an EDIT button at the top of the window when you are in the email account - where you can see your inbox, sent and trash folders - if there is an edit button at the top of that window - you can tap that and then an Add Mailbox option appears at the bottom of the window.
If you do not see that edit button, you do not have an IMAP account and you cannot add folders.

  • Will not fast forward, or display track length, on many songs/videos

I understand that this may be a codec/format thing, but that would be puzzling as many of the mp3's I cannot currently FF on do so, on my much older 4thGen iPod.
I am surprised that this is not featuring on more forums - I have not been able to see it anywhere while googling. The track length displays as 0:00, holding the right click-wheel results in shifting to the next song, and any attempt to use the scroll function via the middle button results in the song starting from scratch. Highly annoying.
    This also occurs with video.
    Can anybody help?

Works fine in IE9 and Firefox 5.

  • Wrong track order in ipod

My ipod has the wrong track order for at least three different albums of three different artists. Its only one song on each of the albums. All the album info is correct and in itunes the songs are all in the right order. I've restored the ipod twice to no avail. Any ideas

the only thing I can suggest is make sure your playlists are in the right order when syncing, so maybe have your albums in the right order when syncing? I know my purchased playlist is in whatever order I sorted it last...usually by play count. SO my most played song is at the top of that playlist. Maybe it works like that for albums too, so make sure the songs on the album are sorted by track #
