  • Imac to VCR connection

does anyone successfully connected a VCR to an Imac so as to record the screen image ? I have tried using the mini s-video adapter supplied by apple to connect to my VCR via a switchable s-video to scart adapter but with no success. I want to record online game footage without intermediate software. I have a miglia directors cut and can play recorded VCR tapes into Imovie .

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    What issues are you experiencing?
Do you get a picture (at all) from the S-Video adaptor on your TV?
Are you using an AV in port on the VCR - or is the SCART port only Video out - some are.
Is the SCART adaptor you're using correctly configured for Video-In/Out. Some SCART adaptors have a switch to change them from an 'In' to an 'Out', others have a single role which can't be changed.
Have you tried using the Composite Video port instead?
Remember you'll need to export any audio seperately using a 3.5mm Stereo to Red/White RCA Composite cable.

P.S. You've posed in the iMac Flat Panel forum which is for G4 "iLamp" iMacs rather than the G5 iMacs. You may get better asssistance in the iMac G5 forum in future.

  • Unable to record programs on my VCR

My VCR(s) are connected according to the diagrams shown on the troubleshooting page of the Verizon website, but I am not able to record anything.  I only have the VCR, not DVR.   I get a blue screen on the one TV and just static (and sound) on the other TV.

How do you have your VCR Connected to the Verizon FIOS Set Top Box ?
Normally you would connect it as follows:
STB---S Video and Composite Audio (Red and white)--->VCR
    -or-
STB---Composite Audio and Video (Yellow, Red, White)--->VCR
    -or-
    STB---Coax Cable (RG6)--->VCR
To record the VCR would need to be set to record from the alternate input if using S-Video or Composite Cables and Channel 3 or 4 if using a Coax Cable.  The Verizon STB would need to be on and tuned to the program that you want to record.

  • How can I connect a audio cassette player to my MBPro to play thru its speakers?

I would like to play my audio cassette  thru my MBPro.
    How can I connect it?
    Thanks for your help.
    Vernon

You are correct.  However, after asking my first question and received your reply, I replied with a second request because my audio cassette player went to the shop and I now wanted to know about a vcr connection.
And, I have tried your suggestion for the vcr but it did not work for me!! ;-(
I doubled checked my audio settings in System Preferences to make sure I was using the external mic connection and not the internal mic connection.  Also, I double checked my audio cables and "y" adapters to go from R-L audio output to mini Jack Y-cable and all are working just fine.
But I do not hear audio thru my MBPro. :-(
Do you have any other suggestion or question that might help?
I do appreciate your suggestions and especially your replying to my requests for help.
    Thanks again.
Oh yes, I need to head to bed since we are on CDT.  So, I will not be able to reply to you until Thursday!

  • Can I copy form a VCR to my DV Camera?

The camera is a Canon DV NTSC ZR 200.
I know The question is not adobe related exactly but I I want to do this so I can get video into adobe. The VCR only has A/V or coaxle. I have a USB 2.0 Ripper but I have lost the install disk and I don't want to pay to download which seems to be my only option so if my original idea could work, please let me know.
    Thanks

I have my VCR connected to my Canon 830MVi DV camcorder which is connected to my PC via a 4pin - 4 pin firewire. I to am trying to transfer my VCR tapes to DVD via Premiere Elements 4. I'm fairly certain the connection works because in the Capture window the video and sound come through on my PC, but I when I click 'Get Video' nothing happens it won't record.
I have successfully copied miniDV tapes from the camcorder to DVD so I know the software works. So what exactly am I doing wrong? Does anyone have a solution? Or can you point me to a website which might help? Obviously I'm not the only one having problems

  • Capturing Video from a VCR

I am trying to convert some home videos on VCR. I love PS Elements 8 so I bought Premier Elements 8. I connected my VCR to a PC USB
via  a Terratec Grabster 250. The Capture window in Premier Elements appears to have identified the video source (Grabster Series, capture) but I got no picture of the video playing on the VCR. If I press "Capture" no footage is captured. I  have Core Duo 2x2.4GHz with 2GB Ram. So I took this up with Adobe Support and this is the reply I got:
I am sorry to inform you that you can only capture videos using
Firewire  cable  as usb cable is not supported in Premiere Elements 8,
if  this option is not available in your VCR, you can not capture videos
    from  VCR to computer.
What?! The software is not written to support the industry's leading bus connection?!! That's just ridiculous. I suppose when ripping HD it may be that USB 2.0 is too slow but I'm trying to convert ancient VCRs using a composite video source!
Has anyone an idea if I can convert my Grabster's USB output to feed into the lonely solitary Firewire socket on my PC?

    Hello Wounded.
I am using PE v7.  I sold my PE v8 because it was not working properly and incompatible with some devices/software already on my PC.  But to your issue using your VCR with PE.
With PE v3 and not v7 I have a VCR connected to my PC via RCA cables.  To export my VCR video's to PE I capture the VCR video to the capture software that came with my PC, SONIC.  Once captured, I close SONIC and open PE.
I click on Get Media, then click File/Folder, then select the captured file.  PE will convert the file into the acceptable format to edit with PE.  The quality is not the best but it is good.
To help increase the quality of these conversions I purchased Dazzle (a Pinnacle product) which connects my VCR to my PC via USB.  I have noticed a big difference in the quality, which is very good.
If you have another editing software on your computer try what I've outlined above.
    Hope it helps.
Let me know how it goes.
    ciao for now.

  • Video out port

I recently bought a video out to s-video adapter from Apple , when connected my screen resolution is altered and cannot be set to its usual setting . The brightness adjustment appears disabled in some games and my VCR connected to the other end of the s-video lead via a 2 way adapter is receiving no signal. How can I determine where the fault lies.

Using mirror mode explains the resolution issues that you are having.
Regarding the signal issue, does your TV have a direct composite or S-Video input on it or, like your VCR, must you use the scart switch? The easiest way to track the problem down would be to directly connect the Mac to the external device without any intermediary. If it works, your switch is likely the problem. If it doesn't, the issue is either the video output from the computer or the video adapter.

  • Audio Drift when importing VHS Tapes-Do I need a Canopus ADVC 300

Embarking on the daunting task of importing/editting >100 2hr VHS tapes, and want to get the best results for my efforts.
I pop a tape into a VCR connected via S-Video (video) and RCA (audio) cables to a Sony DVMC-DA1 AD converter, and from there to my Mac Pro via Firewire. Use FCE "Capture Now" using NTSC DV Converter setup. Start capture, let it run unattended, and return at my leisure to do some rough editting.
Problem is the audio on the imported clip gradually loses sync, by about 2 seconds by the end of the clip. The sync problem is present on the clip when played with Quicktime as well.
    Questions:
    1. Is there a reasonable way to correct this in FCE?
    2. Since my Sony converter is nearing 10 years old, will use of a more recent AD converter such as the Canopus ADVC 300 result in a perfectly synced import?
    3. If so, can you comment on the Canopus's purported video noise reduction and image stabilization capabilities? Is it noticable/worthwhile?
    Thanks for your time.

    Hello,
The problem is the audio is not 'locked' to the video, and your old Sony DVMC-DA1 does not appear to support locked audio.
The only way you might deal with this in FCE itself would be to capture shorter clips (say, under 15 minutes each) which would minimize the degree to which the audio drifts out of sync in each clip. (The longer the clip, the greater the drift.)
Given the large amount of video you wish to digitize (some 200 hours), it will be far preferable to use a Canopus ADVC-100, 110 or higher model - +they all support DV locked audio+ - so the video & audio are sync'd without the need for manual intervention or capturing short clips.
I have used the Canopus 100 & 110 extensively and have been very happy with the results. Sometimes, depending on the VHS tape, there is some slight banding at the very bottom of the image but 1) this is +usually not visible+ in the finished movie because it is outside the 'image safe area' and 2) if necessary can be compensated via about a 2%-4% enlargement of the image in FCE (which is not enough to soften the image).
I have not used the Canopus 300 because I never felt the need, as I am happy with my results from the 100 & 110. Users of the 300 have been pretty positive about its built-in TBC and image cleaning capabilities.

  • Capture Now Freezing

I just got a Canopus ADVC 110. Everything connects fine and works well. I can moniter play and watch video in the capture windo. I have my VCR connected to the converter via RCA then to the computer with FireWire. When I try to capture "now" the window that shows what I'm capturing freezes. And I get a clip that show's a half second of action and sound and then a minute of still frame. I'm confused with what to do. I've check a lot of other discussions and help guides online and in books. The iMovie capture works great my Final Cut doesn't. I'm using Final Cut Express 2. Please help I would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using the DV Converter setting in FCE?

  • Unix Executable File?

I have my vcr connected to a samsung dv camcorder, and am recording the old vhs to dvd-rw disc. When I put it in my mac it reads as a Unix Executable .VRO file - and it is greyed out trying to import into iMovie - I'm guessing this must be a pc file which is why my mac can't read it?
    cheers

you've posted in the iMHD vers5 section of this board .. this version does NOT support the import via DVD. iM08 does...
'finalize' your disk in your Samsung device (read its manual how to accomplish this)
2nd step, you need a convert tool, usual advice is the combo of mp2-playback component from apple.com (20$), and the free Tool Mpeg Streamclip www.squared5.com ..
.. you add another loss of pic quality going the way via vhs to dvd to iMovie instead of using a converter box, which offers direct conversion from analogue to digital ...

  • DVD copyright protection issues ( G3Ti200 Pro-TD(MS-8851)

Maybe some of you have already experienced this. But I just installed an internal DVD player in my PC with "Power DVD" software. I was quite happy playing several different DVD's until recently when an error message came up stating: "The TV Out port of your display card is not working properly", and: "This copy protected disc can not be played when the TV out function is enabled".
Now I have had much problems in the past with TV out. Driver updates do not support the TV out function, and it in effect becomes disabled. However, in the VGA card bios it is still enabled by default. So I have a video card that says TV out doesn't work and a DVD player which says it does. BUT, there doesn't seem to be a tab or button anywhere in the configuration utility to disable it!
My question is: does anyone know of a regedit or any other means to disable the tv out function of my video card? Also: the move I was trying to watch was "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon", practically speaking can anyone address which copyright software is causing this issue? Is this listed on the package? Does anyone know of other movies incompatible with your or my system?
MSI: this is also a question you need to address in that you are selling a product not compatible with its intended use.
Let's not lose sight of the real issue here people. This is nothing more than the largest companies in the world extorting even more money out of our already empty pockets. AOL-Time-Warner, Sony, Viacom, and so on, are stealing our money because they can and no one is stopping them. They took $5 of my money, and I wasn't even able to use their product.

    Hi,
I'm not familiar with your hardware, but here's a couple of things you could try.
TV-out is usually not enabled in the first place if there is no TV connected, so you could either boot without the TV connected, or disable it by disconnecting and then clicking on the "Detect Displays" button (at somewhere like Display Properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> nVidia). Note that the test for presence of a TV is a fairly simple resistance measurement, which will detect a connected TV or VCR etc., even if it is switched off.
Hopefully, the copy protection will then not think that you are trying to copy the DVD to a VCR connected to the TV out port. (Naturally, no-one would ever think of using an external VGA-TV converter    )
TVTool is also worth checking out at http://www.tvtool.de - although it might not work with your hardware.
    Cheers

  • Using iBook as TV for PS2

    Hi
I'm trying to get my PS2 to play on my laptop. I have my PS2 connected to a VCR and the VCR connected to a analog converter which goes into my laptop. I keep trying to view it in iMovie and nothing is happening. I know that the PS2 puts out 480 interlaced video. Is there any free programs that can fix this problem or can someone help me figure this out.
    Thanks

I don't think that there is any way that you can directly use your iBook screen as a screen for your PS2. If you have a video camera that can connect to iMovie, then you might be able to connect through that by hooking the PS2 to your camera so that you can see it on the LCD, then connecting the camera to iMovie using a 4-6 pin firewire cable.

  • Play DVD on iMac and watch it on TV

I don't have a DVD player with my television. If I want to watch DVD movies on my TV screen, can I do this by connecting my iMac -- which plays DVDs -- to my television?
Is this where I would need the Apple Video Adapter? According to the iMac manual, I plug one end into the video-out port of the iMac and the other into the S-video port on the back of the TV. Is that all there is to it? Don't I need video cable, or is that part of the adapter?
Do I control the playback of the DVD via the DVD Player program on the iMac? And if I have a VCR connected to the TV, do I have to disconnect that first before DVD playback will work?
I hope anyone who's done this can tell me what I need to know. Thanks all.

Is that all there is to it?Yes, except that if you want the TV to play the audio you will need an audio cable to go from the iMac's headphone port to the TV's audio input.Don't I need video cable, or is that part of the adapter?Yes you will need an S-video cable to go between the video adapter and your TV.Do I control the playback of the DVD via the DVD Player program on the iMac?Yesif I have a VCR connected to the TV, do I have to disconnect that first before DVD playback will work?Only if the VCR is connected to the TV's only S-video input.

  • 480i out of my 6416 STB?

I'm trying to figure out my options for getting my Toshiba HDD DVDr with S-video input to record full screen HD (at SD resolutions I know).
    My options are:
    1. add a component to S-video converter (needs 480i input, about $139)
    2. add a component to S-video converter (accepts anything, about $230)
    3. abandon the Toshiba and buy a DVDr from eBay that has component inputs (maybe $50)
    4. live with the black bars all around
    Question:
Can I even set the 6416 to give me 480i out of the component outs?  The more I think about that, the more I don't think I really want to.  My TV uses HDMI from the STB.  I'd want to keep that at 1081i.
    Any help would be appreciated.

This actually isn't difficult. At least on my 6416, the S-Video output jack is active even in HD channels, in fact I have a JVC S-VHS VCR connected that way.
Just run an S-VHS cable from the back of the 6416 to the S-Video input on the DVR. S-video isn't 480i, and it isn't component, but S-Video is capable of about 400 line resolution. By contrast, SD over the air is limited to about 330 lines. So while S-Video isn't quite as good as 480i, it is very close, and a lot better than composite video.
At any rate, I can watch HD channels as SD full screen by routing the s-video signal through the VCR and into the S-Video input on my TV. I can also record them as SD on the S-VHS VCR, so there is no reason to think you cannot do the same thing with a DVD recorder.
So you should be able to record HD TV to your DVD recorder via the S-Video output on the 6416 while watching HD TV.

  • Analog signals

    hey,
i have tons of old Hi8 video tapes that i would love to transfer to DVD. my question is this; is it possible to use the composite video output on my PB as an input and transfer it directly or do i need an analog to digital converter?
    thanks,
    dave
    PwerBook G3

    Dave,
Assuming you need RCA plugs to connect with, you will need an analog to digital converter. There are both firewire and usb converters out there. This will give you an idea of some of the converters available:
    http://www.synchrotech.com/support/analog2dv-conversions.html
I use a Canopus adv-100 firewire with a vcr connected to it to get video into my g5 using either iMovie or Toast in OS X. I have also used a family members camera with usb directly into the computer.
Depending upon your set up, there are many different ways to go.
    Hope this helps.
