VCR to iMac to DVR disc??

I have a bunch of old VHS tapes I'd like to convert to DVR media. Is there a way to hook a VHS machine to my iMac G5 so that I could then burn the tapes' contents onto a DVR?

You need a device that plugs into USB. You connect the VCR to the device using S-Video (if available) or the standard (yellow) RCA connector, and the audio using the red/white RCA connectors. Then you run software that records what's playing on the VCR in real-time and stores it in the file format of your choice. You can also connect the device to live TV and watch on your computer screen (without recording anything).
I have this one from Daystar Technology, and it's one of the less expensive options. It comes with recording software. However, I mainly use it to watch TV on my iMac's screen; actually, I watch the output from my TiVo on my computer screen.

I purchased CS5 for my laptop (Macbook Pro 2007 I believe) and now have the newest iMac without a disc drive. I have tried remote installation, but it did not work. I was signed in with download assistant, no just in at adobe.com... I've tried different perferences and settings but when I click on the links nothing seems to happen. I've been messing around with this for a few hours now and it dawned on me that it may have something to do with my internet. I live outside the city- totally nice for gardening, totally terriable for internet thus I have a verizon data plan and not unlimited internet, I think possibly verizon is shutting it down because of restrictions I have on my data. This type of thing also happened when I upgraded to Mavericks. The file itself was larger than my month's data so it seemed like it wouldn't initiate the download... I don't know for sure if it is the same problem here but if you're telling me that you are having more successful results than I am that might be the reason.
I'll take my computer to work or to my mom's house or somewhere where I can have unlimited access and see if I have any better success.

I recently purchased a second hand 24" iMac from 2007.
How is ist possible to reset it without installation disc of snow leopard?s there any possibility to reset the system having installed Mountain Lion or Mavericks.
As I own also a MacbookPro from 2009, is it possible to reset also the iMac using the disc of my Macbook,
or is it possible to restore it using my apple Id, with the purchased Mountain Lion / Mavericks via internet recovery.

They don't even seem to have my correc date of birth so I can't progress the reinstallation. I'm currently abroad and have my iMac with me but with no way of contacting Apple that I can find, I'm at a loss and very reluctant to pay £35 to try and get my ID and pasword sorted out given that their system recognises my current details. can anyone help please?

when they gifted me the mountain Lion software several years ago.
Mountain Lion was introduced in July 2012. Did the people who gifted you possibly use their Apple ID for the purchase of your OS? If you used your own Apple ID, you should have simply used the one you use for all things app store. The problem with any purchase at the app store is: whatever Apple ID was used to purchase, it willl stay tied to that Apple ID forever. And, purchases from the app store are not transferable.
So, you can check with the person(s) who gifted you or spend $20 to buy it - or, if your hardware is compatible with the new OS Mavericks, you could download it and associate it with your Apple ID.
FWIW, according to the licensing agreement, the OS remains the property of Apple and you are only granted a license to run it.

The configure bar gets about an 1/8 full and then just does nothing. I think its lists the update as combo update? cant remember with out checking.
I have tried to do the disk verify and repair but this has made no difference.
Please let me know what i need to do, I have reformatted the mac just to start over as was clogged with a lot of useless data, I had installed lion (10.7) from the app store previously and now cant seem to find a way to re install lion. I hope I dont need to pay for it again?

If you erased your hard drive, you'll need to reinstll OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard to access the App store. You won't have to pay for OS X 10.7 Lion again. Did you try booting to the recovery partition by holding the command and r keys down? If that's still there, you can reinstall OS X 10.7 from there.
If you're looking to install the current iTunes, you need OS X 10.6.8 at a minimum.
If you're still trying to update OS X 10.5 Leopard, you can download the combo update from here. Download, use Disk Utility to repair permissions, apply the update, then repair permissions again. That will take you to OS X 10.5.8.

How do I download/install Photoshop & Premiere Elements 10 on new iMac with no disc drive?

My iMac hard drive recently failed and I lost everything. I just bought one of the new iMacs with no disc drive. I had purchased Photoshop CS5 in 2011 but it came with CD's for install. I stil have them but it doesn't do me any good since there is no disc drive to put them in on the new computer. How can I install Photoshop using my serial number from my original purchase? I downloaded the CS6 trial version and when I try to activate it with my old serial number it says it is invalid.

Download and install the trials, launch and activate them with your serial number then do 'Help > Updates'.

Since your machine isn't under warranty, I'd try a CD cleaner that supports car stereos, like this one from Radio Shack online, but only if Apple Authorized service technician says it is safe:

Core i3 mac not seeing power pc g4 imac in target disc mode

I'm trying to migrate my set up from a power pc g4 imac running a 10.4.11 to a core i3 imac. All the system software and firmware on the g4 imac is upto date and the mac will enter target disc mode. The macs are connected using a brand new 6 pin to 9 pin firewire cable. The iMac core i3 will not see the other mac in target disc mode. When trying the same thing using the migration assistant, migration assistant just hangs with the 'waiting for your other mac to restart'.
I'd really appreciate any help to fix the issue.

Is this the newest model with Thunderbolt? If so then see Thunderbolt 10.6 Help: Transferring files between two computers using Target Disk Mode and Intel-based Mac may become unresponsive in target disk mode.
Have you checked to be sure the drive in the G4 is configured as the Master? If it isn't, then it cannot be seen in TDM.

Help hooking up a VCR to iMac

Could someone please advise what connectors, cables, apps I would need in order to hook-up a VCR to an iMac (7,1) running 10.5.8? Been putting off transferring videos but the time has come so would really appreciate any advice.

The best entry-level interface is probably the Canopus ADVC-55. This has composite and S-VHS inputs, so if you get one of those SCART to three phono leads (left, right and composite video) you can plug it directly in. The device connects to a Mac through a FireWire 400 lead (so you need a Mac that does have FireWire - and a 400 to 800 lead if it's only got an 800 connection) and requires no drivers: it should be instantly recognized by any video recording program, including iMovie.

Hi, my dad recently bought a new imac and since his old one was in pretty decent condition he gave it to me. I believe its an imac 2009, and I would like to reset it to factory settings to remove all of his files and programmes and such. I've looked online and I've seen people say that you need to use the disc that came with the mac, but as it was purchased so long ago I no longer have access to this disc. Basically I would like to wipe the computer so I can set it up as if its a new mac. Can anyone help me do this? Thank you

You NEED an install disc, period. You can call Apple and provide them with the serial number and for a fee they'll ship you a set of the original install discs. That's your best option as those discs will include all of the original software and the Apple Hardware Test that you may need or want some day. Or you can purchase a retail version of Snow Leopard http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard and while it will not include all of the original software or AHT it will allow you to completely erase and install a new system.

You are saying that your hard drive in Disk Utility shows 150 GB, and when you click Info that also shows 150GB? This would be the hardware drive details, indicated by the name of a drive manufacturer like Hitachi or Seagate? Plus when you select that and click Info, the pop up shows the same capacity (followed by the actual number of bytes)?
Offset under the hardware drive in the initial Disk Utility list will be any partitions that you have mounted. If selected, they will show the name under which they are mounted on the Mac. That should give a complete list (bottom of page) of the mount point, drive size, number of bytes used, and number of bytes free. What do they say?

Imac superdrive scratching discs

My Imac late 2009 is scratching dvd's to shreds. I have no more warranty left. I have a couple of questions.
1. Do I take it to the apple store for repair
2. Does anyone know roughly how much it is going to be?
3. Does the apple store give me an estimate before repairing?

just came back from the Apple Store In Pointe Claire Montreal, my appointment was for 2pm, I was served at 2pm THAT WAS GREAT.
Now for the bad stuff. The Genius, was able to burn a cd and a 4.7 gig dvd without issue, no scratches. He said maybe I got a bad batch of discs (Verbatim DVD+R DL 8.5 gigs) and I should try to buy a new spindle first.
He believes the verbatim's are slightly thicker and it maybe the issue. He said he is going to order the replacement DVD drive for my Imac and call me when it comes in the total will be 187.95, I can decide AFTER I try a new batch of discs to see if the issue persists.
After I came out of the Apple Store I went to Best Buy and purchased a new spindle of 10 Verbatim DVD+R DL, I brought my Imac home fired it up tried to burn a disc and the same issue occurred. Scratches! on the disc.
Replace or not to Replace that is the question. I read many people have had the drive replaced and the same thing occurred. Any advice would be great, as I am unsure as what to do.

Changing or resetting an account password if you need a replace startup disc then call AppleCare and for a nominal price they will replace it.

Installing photoshop elements on imac with no disc drive

I purchased Adobe Photoshop elements 9 a year or so ago. I still have the installation disc and all the packaging that came with it. Unfortunately my imac crashed and I had to purchase a new imac. I would like to install this program on my new computer but there is no disc drive on it. Also there are no instructions included that direct installation without using the disc. How can I get this installed on my imac so that I can use it again?

You can download the trial version of the software from the page linked below and then use your current serial number to activate it.
