VCR2Mac USB VHS Converter ?

I'm interested in purchasing a USB VHS Converter for a PowerBook 17" G4 Mac, both hardware and software. I was disappointed that Ion's EZ VHS Converter software is NOT Mac compatible!!!
In short, I'm asking what USB VHS Converter PowerBook 17" G4 Mac users would recommend, and is there a VHS Converter that actually works on a PPC Mac?
Looking forward to hearing from the Mac community in all convenient speed, I am,
Yours sincerely,
Joseph.

I use a Canopus box to convert from analog to digital, and have used it for VHS conversion. Their current entry level box is at http://desktop.thomsongrassvalley.com/products/ADVC55/index.php . You can see their larger product line at http://desktop.thomsongrassvalley.com/products/videoconversion.php . Their connection to the Powerbook is via firewire, not USB, however. You can use the Apple software, starting with iMovie and moving up to Final Cut Express if you need more function. I'm not sure if the current Final Cut Studio is still installable on a G4 Powerbook. Avid/Pinnacle makes video software that's mac-compatible and has a conversion box also, however, I haven't used any of their products extensively. I did try a free software promo several years ago, and found I preferred the Apple software.
Make sure you have lots of hard drive space available before you start, either on your internal hard drive or on an externally-attached hard drive. When you render your production, tilt up the back of the Powerbook a bit, to get more air under it, as the bottom will get hot.

  • Connecting hp 8508a vector voltmeter with agilent 82357a usb/gpib converter

    Hello
For my experiment, I need to connect to a HP 8508A vector voltmeter by using an agilent 82357A usb/gpib converter. I have a serious problem about communicating with my device using NI-VISA. I tried to do the steps indicated at following links which were indicated at the forum posts by people using 82357A:
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/F7C187DBF09EBE1186256F550065BD32?OpenDocument,
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/websearch/3B3626D9C1F999218625694200791AD7?OpenDocument,
    http://cp.literature.agilent.com/litweb/pdf/5990-3731EN.pdf?cmpid=1273CN.
The version of MAX is 4.3.0f0 and i am using labview 8.5 with NI-VISA 8.2. I am trying to configure my 82357A using agilent io libraries suite 14.1.
First, I tried to configure my usb/gpib controller using  agilent connection expert and set the visa interface id to GPIB6 and connect to the 82357A without any problems. Then I connect this gpib converter to my vector voltmeter. The gpib adress of the voltmeter was 6(gpib address of the interface converter was 10) so visa address GPIB6::6::INSTR was assigned to voltmeter by connection expert. I tried to connect to the voltmeter from the connection expert by using the agilent interactive IO. Send *IDN? command and took the proper response from the voltmeter. The voltmeter went into remote mode and I tried to read the voltage values by using the FETCH? command of the device and got the voltage properly which means I successfully connected to the device. Then I went to MAX and enabled the NIVISATulip.dll and restarted the MAX. Then I went back to agilent connection expert and checked the box: "use agilent 488 library where possible" for side-by-side communication between the NI and agilent visa. By the way agilent visa was installed as the secondary library.  Then when I went back to MAX, I start to see the voltmeter under miscellaneous VISA resources with the address  GPIB6::6::INSTR. But the problem started here. When I tried to send commands from MAX to voltmeter with the "open visa test panel" I encountered an error which exactly says:"unable to open session to GPIB6::6::INSTR, return status code:0xBFFF009E, status name:VI_ERROR_LIBRARY_NFOUND, a code library required by VISA couldn't be located or loaded." As I said before i enabled the libraries of agilent 488 from the options of the agilent connection expert. When I went back to connection expert and unchecked the box for using agilent 488 libraries nothing changed. Also when I went to NI-VISA interactive control I couldn't see my device under the tab of VISA I/O.
I tried to read some posts from this forum. People are using this usb/gpib converter successfully without any problems by performing the steps I have done. I have some questions about possible subtle points specific to my application.
First question is according to the manual of the voltmeter(this is an old device by the way from 1988):"vector voltmeter is capable of remote operation via the HP-IB which is HP's implementation of IEEE standard 488.1  "So, what I understand from this sentence is my device is communicating remotely with IEEE standard 488.1 and not 488.2 Does it make any problem? What kind of modifications should I do to my setup for overcoming this if it creates any problems? As I said before I was communicating with device very properly from the agilent connection expert. In manual there is also a sentence like "HP-IB commands used in the vector voltmeter conform to the standards set by document IEEE 488.2 1987."
Second question is should I install newer versions of agilent io libraries suite or MAX or NI-VISA. I wrote the versions I am using before are they compatible? Where can I install newer versions? As I know the newest version of the agilent io libraries suite is 15.1 or 2. Is is compatible with 82357a?(maybe I should ask this question to agilent people)
Third question I don't remember how I did it but agilent visa is indicated as secondary visa resource in agilent connection expert(I think I did it while installing agilent io libraries suite.) . How can I switch between NI and agilent visa as primary visa resource? Do you think think this will help?
I terribly need measurements from this set up and really appreciate your help if possible.
    Sincerely
Caglar Yavuz, University of Michigan,Ann Arbor,EECS department.

    Caglar,
The documents you mention ahould include the proper prcedure for using this hardware in LabVIEW. Here are my recommendations:
The version of NI-VISA  you mentioned is not valid. The most recent version is 4.6.2. I would recommend ugrading if you do not have this version. After the upgrade, ensure that tulip is enabled as well as the other settings and see if this helps.
When talking about the instrument, the biggest concern that usually is relevant with 488.1 is that it will not respond to *IDN?. In your case, it looks like it does, and should work as 488.2 is backwards compatible. It seems to me, the issue is still with the 82357A, and we have not yet reached the voltmeter.
In order for NI-VISA to work with your device, NI-VISA must be the primary visa driver.
Hope this helps, let us know how the upgrade turns out. If you continue to have issues, take some screenshots of the preferences in MAX and upload them on the forum.

  • Can the usb camera converter be used with a flash drive or scaning device?

can the usb camera converter be used with a flash drive or scaning device?

    No.
iOS does not have scanner drivers nor does the connector supply enough power.
Flash drive would kind of work, would need to have a DCIM folder-probably wouldn't see whole drive(?)
Then again this exists, uses wifi:

    Hi,
I bought a USB-I2C converter from Devantech. The driver sw installs a

Is there anybody who has experience with this?

    Hi,
can you give me an example how to send a string command to it? I also tried hyperterminal but  not use... What am I doing wrong?????
    Marc
Well there should be some documentation with the device that describes the commands you can send to it, to do the things it should do. We can not help you with that as we do not have that device.
Once you get those commands you will probably want to use HyperTerminal to try and play with it a little. You can also go into Measurement & Automation Explorer and selecting your port you can use the Interactive Control Panel to do similar. If you have gotten some communication in that way and have an understanding of how the device works you can start coding in LabVIEW.
Basically until you can get some basic communication with the device from HyperTerminal, trying to make it work in LabVIEW is wasted time.

  • APC USB/Serial converter cable

I have a Lexmark E232 printer with a serial cable. I purchased an APC USB/Serial Converter cable and tried plugging it up to my Macbook, but it is not recognized. Any thoughts?

The APC Adapter is not driverless. It requires software drivers to work. I do not believe that there are Mac drivers for it.

  • VHS Converter Recommendation?

Hey peeps...I need to get video off of VHS to my Mac, and all I see is VHS to DVD converters without any one of them exactly explaining what format it converts the VHS to.  I don't want to go buy one and it only convert VHS to DVD without any way for me to edit; I need to edit it preferably with Final Cut X.  Recommendations?

I'm not a peep (sounds like a newly hatched chicken), but...
Depending on availability there could be a free solution... (borrow from friends or relatives?)
    1. VHS player with component out
    2. Digital camcorder with RCA component input and Firewire (maybe USB) output (I use a Sony DCR-TRV340)
    3. iMovie (Maybe Final Cut though I have never used it this way)
    4. To be precise you must have the VCR player, camcorder, and Mac connected and working in unison. This is where my memory is a bit fuzzy. I don't remember whether you can simply play the data through the camcorder or if you have to put it in recording mode, or ?. Experiment a little. I've done this many times, but haven't digitized any video for several years since I converted some of my VHS tapes and old analog camcorder tapes.
    5. Edit in iMovie or Final Cut.
    6. Use iDVD. If you don't have a copy scrounge a boxed copy of iLife '08, '09 or '11 with iDVD (Then upgrade via software update to the latest version (v.7.1.2.)) (Or, 3rd party DVD creation software.) to create a DVD.
I would think Googling this method will give you some insight I've forgotten.
    Good luck,
    Jerry

    Dear Developers,
I have a Silicon Labs chip Cp2108. Its a Quad USB to Serial converter. It supports all the operating systems except Win CE. So I have the source code of the driver for Linux 2.6 / Linux 3.0. I have experience in Device drivers development

    Dear Vinoth,
            Thanks for the valuable reply.
I am confused a bit here. I need to make the external USB -UART bridge (CP2108) work on win CE 7.
the driver in Path \WINCE600\PUBLIC\COMMON\OAK\DRIVERS\USB\CLASS\USBSER is using the built in USB controller
hardware and making it as a Serial port right ?
How do you go about making the external USB -UART bridge work as a COM port ?
I have a document from SIlicon Labs which gives info about Device descriptors and interface commands .

I believe I can answer a few of your questions. If you would like to speak to an NI Technical Sales Representative for some of the parts that I am not able to answer, please call 888-280-7645. To connect to your instruments, you will need:
    1. A GPIB interface (either a PCI solution, USB solution, or some other interface card)
    2. A GPIB cable for each device (this depends somewhat on the distance between them as there are certain distance ratings on GPIB cables
Drivers are included with the purchase of the GPIB interface (the ethernet GPIB interface requires a separate license for its driver, but the USB and PCI versions are downloadable off of NI's website).

  • What is the best VHS converter to DVD for mac

Ready to convert old VHS tapes to DVD.  What is considered to be the best on the market now for Macs?  Thank you for your help.

    Grassvalley ADVC300
I've played around with countless other conversion systems, ranging in price from $79 to $399. Short verison, this is the ONLY unit to own. No dropped frames at all, even with questionable quality tapes, no jitter, great color, excellent sound quality. Zero setup with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11.
This is a prosumer deck. The time code function is alone worth the price if you have old analog footage. Absolutely NO "Out Of Sync" audio.
ADVC300 is for anyone who wants to do editing and is concerned about quality of color and speed, for the novice it is an incredible gizmo that will restore VHS tapes to a state close to the original fixing midtones, highlights and shadows on the fly. Not only can you simply convert analog to digital you can actually manipulate the signal going in (if you want to).
A bit pricey but it WORKS.
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material.
I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09/11. VERY easy and 100% "lossless"

  • Need TOSLink to either HDMI or USB Audio Converter

I'd like to input my entire Audio CD collection to my MacBook Pro with Retina Display via a Sony changer which has TOSLink audio out.
Since the MBPwRD doesn't have a digital audio input jack, I think a TOSLink to HDMI/USB converter will be the only way I'll be able to use the Sony changer rather than a SuperDrive.
I'm not even sure if I'll be able to totally automate importing 300+ CDs but even if I have to manually advance the changer to the next CD, it would be a heck of a lot easier than using the SuperDrive.
I'm currently searching the Internet for such a converter but not having much luck so far.

Hold the alt/option key while clicking on the volume icon in the bar at the top right of the screen (on the desktop not in iTunes) - this should list available audio output/input devices to choose from.

  • Firewire to USB 2 converter for nano connection

I would buy a nano in a heartbeat, but my 12" Powerbook has USB 1.1 and Firewire 400 only, and no way to upgrade to USB2 (no PCMCIA slot). USB 1.1 is too slow even for my shuffle, which has 25% of the capacity of the nano.
D-Link has a combo USB and Firewire hub, but it requires a USB2 port for USB2 speed and functionality and won't run off the firewire port alone. Does anyone make a simple Firewire to USB2 adapter or hub?

Yes, but how long does it take to completely fill a 4 GB nano over USB 1.1? If I were to get one, I'd be swapping tracks in and out on a regular basis since I like to randomly listen to my entire ~1000 song classic rock collection before repeating any tracks. If a complete swap-out of music is going to take an hour or more, I'll skip purchasing a nano for at least a year (when my AppleCare runs out on my 12" PowerBook and I can afford a new one).

  • Can't drag and drop from iTunes after using Ion USB/ EZ Converter

I am new to transferring old vinyl to mp3, and want to make a CD.
I have the tracks in iTunes now- they play perfectly well, but I cannot drag them onto my desktop (to then transfer to Toast).
Before the tracks were reading as wav, but now they are mp3, however, I did use the "Create mp3 version" feature, so have I confused my Mac, but "re-mp3ing" my tracks?
    Thanks.

Release the mouse when you see the symbol with the line through it; you should then be given the option to authenticate in the dialog which appears. If so, choose this option and provide an administrator password when prompted. If not or if the option doesn't work, move the files to another location inside your home folder.

  • USB PS2 Keyboard converter adapter worked fine in 10.5, issues in 10.6

I'm a mac user with a fetish for old IBM Model M clicky keyboards. After some sniffing around and buying a few cheap adapters that didn't work, I found this product on www.clickykeyboards.com :
    http://www.clickykeyboards.com/index.cfm/fa/items.main/parentcat/11298/subcatid/ 0/id/124184
In short, it doesn't seem to work right with key modifiers in 10.6 whereas it did in 10.5
    =======
    The longer story with details...
In leopard, it worked like a charm. Most important to me of course was flexibility of layout in the modifier keys. Starting from the bottom left, standard mac layout is:
    control ... option(alt) ... command(apple)
My keyboard (late 80's classic Model M) has:
ctrl ... [grey plastic] ... alt
...and the normal functionality you get when you plug in a standard 104-key windows keyboard to a mac by USB is:
    ctrl = control
    alt = option
    windows = command
So I map as follows using the modifier keys remap function in the keyboard pane of sysprefs:
    ctrl = control
alt = command (so it's in the same place that it would be on a mac keyboard
    caps lock = option
And it worked beauty. The LED's for num/caps/scroll didn't do anything, which was fine, who needs them. And when I booted to WinXP via BootCamp, it also worked properly. F12 worked for both eject and dashboard, awesome.
Just got the new snow-kitty and the remap stopped working! All the keys on the board work as designed, but no matter how I map the modifier keys in SysPrefs, alt is locked to option, ctrl to ctrl, caps lock to caps lock, the LED's work again (weird), and I have no apple key! It's like the remap values I choose are getting overridden in hardware or something.
Anyone have any ideas? Could be the USB/PS2 converter needs a 10.6 driver, but I can't figure out who the manufacturer is...
Before anyone suggests it, using a newer keyboard is not under any circumstances a viable option

Already asked them earlier today, awaiting reply. They've been very helpful in the past so fingers crossed.
I see this getting fixed by either a driver update from the manufacturer, which I'm not super-confident about since the converter has kind of a brand-X chinese vibe and no documentation whatsoever, or a different (perhaps newer) converter. Will post any follow-up I get from clickykeyboards.com here.
