VCS ova import fails VMware workstation 8

Hello all,
I was recently surprised and excited by the release of the virtual VCS and set out installing!!
Using VMware workstation 8 I imported the VCS ova file, VMware waits for a while then displays a massive agreement screen which cannot be moved to find the agree screen. The only option to remove this massive browser screen is to alt f4, this then ends the import and the VCS installation fails.
Can anyone please advise if it is possible to run the VCS on workstation 8?
(ESXI is not an option as I'm attempting to install on a desktop and esxi doesn't recognise IDE and sata as storage)
I'm really wanting to get this working ASAP for my personal development and testing so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

For production its anyhow the only way to go.
For labbing,  if you google a bit then you can find how to run esxi under vmware desktop or fusion.
I would also not exclude that with some modding you could run the ova on other virtualization
platforms than esxi, but thats anyhow not supported.

    Hi, I've been reading these forums since switched from slackware and gentoo to arch about 4 years ago. This is the first time I've been unable to fix a problem from searching here or the wiki
    I'm having trouble installing vmware workstation.
    So I recompiled the kernel and nvidia linking it to the .0-ARCH.

    For the rest I followed the wiki to install vmware. Everything goes swimmingly until

  • ASAv on VMWare Workstation

    I tried to deploy the new ASAv on my VMWare Workstation 10 but importing the ova file fails with "Error importing OVF: Line 330: Unsupported element 'Property'".
    Has anyone managed to get it running?

    It won't work in Workstation. You can try and extract the ova using 7zip and mount the vmdk's but you will come across a digital signature problem when it is booting. It just keeps on looping.
    You can install in ESXi which works.

  • Issues with Arch 2009.02 in VMware Workstation [SOLVED]

    I installed Arch Linux 2009.02 i686 as a guest in VMware Workstation 6.5.1, my host is Vista x64. The installation of Arch itself and Xorg wasn't a problem although from this point I've had several issues.
    I was unable to 'startx' or 'xinit' without getting crashes, however adding hal to the daemons fixed that problem - some wiki entries state to add dbus, but dbus is already started. A lot of content on the wiki is outdated, telling users to use hwd; I did install hwd separately (from sourceforge) although it gave me hundreds? of errors related to PCI and eventually failure to parse some x configuration binary in /usr/bin.
    Multimedia Issues
    I then installed xfce4 and gstreamer-plugins. All video and audio play back too quickly, i.e. it seems to play the streams as fast as they can decode. This also happens with flash content such as youtube after I'd installed the appropriate programs. Thinking this may be a timing issue, I editted the vmware config file on my Windows host although it did not help; the timing in the VM seemed to be correct anyway.
    Display Issues
    When I run 'startxfce4' from a terminal, Xfce will start as 800x600 - if I go to change this resolution all options show 0Hz as the refresh rate and many options my monitor cannot display are shown even though I have VMware set to allow a maximum size of 1680x1050. I was unable to generate a 'good' xorg.conf file using 'X -configure' and as mentioned earlier, hwd would not work for me. I installed xf86-video-vmware and xf86-video-vesa as well as both open-vm-tools and normal vmware-tools (not at the same time or together) but can't seem to sort this issue. vmware-tools was able to generate a valid xorg.conf file but it only included a handful of 4:3 resolutions and some of these still showed 0hz. For some strange reason 'startx' and 'xinit' now do not work having failed to find /dev/fb0.
    VMware Tools
    When I did try to install vmware-tools, it had many difficulties trying to build the modules - mostly regarding to not recognising __FREEBSD__, I cannot remember the complete error. I also tried to build open-vm-tools but that gave an error about not being able to find libproc even though I had procps installed. Stopping open-vm-tools on shutdown also always fails and occurs twice.
    I'm going to try reinstalling now that I know a little more about what I did to get things working but if anyone could give me a hand it'd be much appreciated.

    After a lot of experimentation I've got a satisfactory installation although a few minor problems remain:
    Adjustments required to correctly run Alsa+Xorg in Arch Linux 2009.02 using VMware Workstation
    The current kernel does not play nicely with alsa, downgrade to kernel26-2.6.29.4-1:
    wget http://www.schlunix.org/archlinux/core/ … pkg.tar.gz
    pacman -U kernel26-2.6.29.4-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
    Install/Upgrade dbus:
    pacman -Sy dbus
    Add hal (if it's not installed then make sure to do so) to your daemons located in /etc/rc.conf, e.g.
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond hal)
    The current open-vm-tools-modules is not compatible with the older kernel, instead use open-vm-tools-modules-2009.04.23-1:
    wget http://www.schlunix.org/archlinux/commu … pkg.tar.gz
    pacman -U open-vm-tools-modules-2009.04.23-1
    The installation will prompt you with an error that /etc/modprobe.conf could not be found (as does the current version), add the following to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf:
    install pcnet32 /sbin/modprobe -q --ignore-install vmxnet; /sbin/modprobe -q --ignore-install pcnet 32 ; /bin/true;
    You can now install open-vm-tools:
    pacman -S open-vm-tools
    To autoload open-vm-tools on start up you need to add it to your daemons located in /etc/rc.conf, e.g.
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond hal open-vm-tools)
    Add vmware-user to your /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file if you desire (for seamless mouse and display switching), e.g. my xinitrc with xfce4 ends with:
    vmware-user &
    exec startxfce4
    Install the following components: xf86-video-vmware xf86-video-vesa xf86-input-vmmouse xf86-input-mouse:
    (You will not be able to start x if you have installed xf86-video-fbdev and do not have a valid xorg.conf file, this is addressed later)
    pacman -S xf86-video-vmware xf86-video-vesa xf86-input-vmmouse xf86-input-mouse
    Lastly we need to edit/create the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to use our vmware drivers, this will enable automatic resolution switching and seamless mouse functionality:
    (All of the following is necessary otherwise X will ignore our vmware drivers)
    Section "ServerFlags"
        Option "AllowEmptyInput" "false"
    EndSection
    Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier  "VMware Mouse"
        Driver      "vmmouse"
        Option "Protocol"         "ps/2"
        Option "Device"           "/dev/input/mice"
        Option "ZAxisMapping"     "4 5"
        Option "Emulate3Buttons"  "true"
    EndSection
    Section "Device"
        Identifier  "VMware SVGA"
        Driver      "vmware"
    EndSection
    Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier  "VMware Config"
        InputDevice "VMware Mouse" "CorePointer"
    EndSection
    Issues
    * open-vm-tools fails to stop during a shutdown or /etc/rc.d/open-vm-tools stop/restart
    * most screen resolutions show 0Hz (although everything works correctly) and adding VertRefresh to xorg.conf produces a major error
    * playback of flash video produces a sound artefact when starting - although I think this may be to do with the decoder rather than system
    I've marked this as solved although I welcome any suggestions regarding these minor issues. The open-vm-tools one I can probably sort out but it's too late now to look into tonight

  • Bootable ISO not recognized by Hyper-V on Win 8.1 Enterprise 64-bit - VMware Workstation understands perfectly

    I activated Hyper-V on my fully patched Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64-bit host PC and tried to create a Windows Server 2008 R2 virtual machine that should have installed from the bootable ISO (the one I downloaded from my MSDN subscription) for Windows Server
    2008 R2, but when the VM starts, it goes through its boot device progression and fails to recognize the ISO as bootable.  No amount of coaxing will convince Hyper-V to use the bootable ISO to install the operating system in the VM.
    To see if there was an issue with the ISO, I removed Hyper-V from the host (because, as I discovered, VMware refuses to run when Hyper-V is present) and then fired up VMware Workstation 10, pointed it to the exact same ISO and it created the VM from that
    ISO just fine.  That proves there is nothing wrong with the ISO image.
    I'm new to Hyper-V since I've been using VMware Workstation for quite some time and figured it was high time I began to make the switch to Hyper-V (since I'm paying for it anyway).
    What setting(s) do I need to adjust to insure that Hyper-V sees the bootable ISO properly so it will install that OS in the virtual machine?
    If you think development is tough now, think how hard it was using punched cards :-)

    I followed the Hyper-V wizard instructions to the letter, including telling it the full path to where the ISO I wanted to use in creating my very first VM is located.  I assume (perhaps incorrectly) that the Hyper-V wizard mounted that ISO on whatever
    device it deemed appropriate, hopefully one that is in the boot device sequence.  It all was very straight-forward and easy to understand; however, it doesn't work.
    The corresponding wizard in VMware Workstation 10 fully understands the ISO and proceeds with its "Easy Install" process without anything else except the license key.
    I didn't capture a video of the failed Hyper-V boot process, but to summarize, it went through its "progression" of devices and simply never found the ISO that I had previously designated.
    Despite its seeming simplicity, the Hyper-V creation wizard doesn't perform what it is instructed to do while the equivalent VMware Workstation 10 wizard works flawlessly.
    If you think development is tough now, think how hard it was using punched cards :-)

  • Problem rebuilding VMWare Workstation 10.0.2 Modules

    Hi,
    today I updated my Kernel to 3.14.2-1 and wanted to rebuild the modules for VMware Workstation 10.0.2. Doing so causes the following error.
    I used this patch before http://pastie.org/pastes/9090538/.
    Has there been major changes between 3.14.1-1 and 3.14.2-1 which cause this problems? It worked before. Someone else experiences this?

    Sorry , I'm just new here
    No worries, and thank you for fixing your post.
    It might help if you tell us how you installed Vmware workstation. Did you follow the wiki?

  • Hardware requirement for running exchange 2010 on vmware workstation

    Dear Team,I need to create a exchange 2010 sp2 on a guest os on vmware workstation.kindly help me out with the physical hardware requirements for a home user

    Hey Mukund26,
    Before I answer your questions, my suggestion would be for you to figure out exactly what you want to get out of running that Exchange lab.  Are you trying to learn Exchange features like DAGs?  Are you trying to learn about virtualizing Exchange?  When you figure that out you'll be better able to answer question 1 since you may not need all of those virtual machines.
    Here are my thoughts on your questions.
    1) It is probably technically possible to run 10 virtual machines on the configuration you have but you're going to have pretty bad performance. I would try to trim that down to only the virutal machines that you really need in order to use the lab how you want to use it.  Here are some questions that may help you figure out what you need:
    Why do you need two domain controllers?  I don't think you need to worry as much about redundancy in your lab.
    Why do you need 2 ESXi hosts and a vCenter?  What purpose do they serve in this configuration?  Are you trying to run the Exchange VMs nested under the ESXi VMs?  If so, why?
    Is there a reason why you want to separate out HTS/CAS from MBX in your lab?   Combining all roles together can reduce the number of VMs you need.  If you separate out the roles you'll need to allocate a lot of RAM to support all of those Exchange VMs.
    2)  Running a lot of virtual machines on a single 1TB SATA disk, especially a 5400 RPM disk, is going to be slow.  It'll be especially painful when the VMs are booting up, rebooting, shutting down, etc..  Try to stagger the power on operations so they don't all boot at once.  For example, first boot your DCs, then boot your HTS/CAS, then your MBX, etc.   There is no doubt that configuration will be slow, so if you can get your hands on an solid state drive with enough space you'll have significantly better performance.  For the purposes of a lab, though, it is probably ok if you can be patient.
    3) I think the i5 processor will be just fine for this lab.  Usually in a lab setting CPU performance isn't the most important thing so similar to above as long as you can be a little patient I think that CPU will suit you just fine.
    As I said figure out what you want to get out of the lab and then you can determine how many VMs you need and whether or not you want to upgrade hardware.  If you're looking to learn about Exchange 2010 in general I would suggest using multirole servers, getting rid of one of the DCs, and not worrying about virtualizing ESX/vCenter so that you can learn.  If you're looking to learn about virtualizing Exchange 2010 on vSphere then let's figure out exactly what you want to get out of it and figure out what you can learn using VMware Workstation and what you really need vSphere for.
    Best of luck!
    Matt

  • VMWare Workstation 10 won't start [solved]

    So, I did a full system update and now VMWare won't start. I applied the netfilter patch on the wiki and that made it so the modules will compile(despite me using the stock kernel I encountered compiler errors). However, now I'm really stuck. When I try to launch vmware it just sits there and never does anything
    This is the output I see:
    [earlz@EarlzWork ~]$ vmware
    Logging to /tmp/vmware-earlz/vmware-modconfig-1186.log
    And this is what's logged:
    [earlz@EarlzWork ~]$ cat /tmp/vmware-earlz/vmware-modconfig-1186.log

    I am experiencing the same issue.  After you run vmware, do you still see the process running but nothing appears on screen?  Do a strace on vmware and let me know what results you obtain.  These are the last few lines of my strace;
    $ strace vmware
    open("/proc/meminfo", O_RDONLY|O_CLOEXEC) = 5
    fstat(5, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0444, st_size=0, ...}) = 0
    mmap(NULL, 4096, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7f1abf686000
    read(5, "MemTotal:        8106088 kB\nMemF"..., 1024) = 1024
    close(5)                                = 0
    munmap(0x7f1abf686000, 4096)            = 0
    open("/etc/pki/tls/certs/ca-bundle.crt", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
    gettid()                                = 19150
    gettid()                                = 19150
    gettid()                                = 19150
    gettid()                                = 19150
    open("/etc/pki/tls/cert.pem", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
    gettid()                                = 19150
    gettid()                                = 19150
    gettid()                                = 19150
    gettid()                                = 19150

    futex(0x7f1abfd88100, FUTEX_LOCK_PI, 1) = -1 ESRCH (No such process)
    pause(
    Notice the pause( ?  It appears vmware is waiting on something, though I am not sure what.   I am using kernel 3.12.1-3-ARCH.  When I rebooted yesterday is when I started encountering problems with vmware not loading.  The last time I rebooted prior to yesterday was March 11th.
    Here is a list of packages that I updated since the reboot on March 11th;

  • CUPS 8.6.1 on VMware Workstation 7.1.2 - After reboot of host, CUPS is unreachable

    Hi,
    after installing CUPS 8.6.1.10000-34 in VMware Workstation 7.1.2 build-301548 and eventually rebooting the host, CUPS is not reachable via IP anymore, i.e. ping from physical NIC of the host to virtual NIC of the CUPS VM fails (Destination Host Unreachable). This also applies vice versa, as well as to HTTP/HTTPS, SSH traffic, etc.
    Before the reboot of the host, there were no issues. The reboot had to be done, due to system updates.
    The suprising fact is, that the CUPS can ping the CUCM (8.6.2.20000-2, also running on the same host and VMware Workstation), but no other machine.
    In order to disqualify firewall issues, I turned off the host's firewall, as well as the iptables firewall of the CUPS. However the issue still persisted.
    Did anyone run in the same problem? So far the only solution was to reinstall CUPS and not to turn off the host...which is not really acceptable, even in a test environment.
    Thanks a lot in advance for your help!
    Kind regards
    Igor Lukic

    The usual problem is that the Cisco OS comes with the WMware drivers for ESXi and not Workstation. As a result the NIC does not come up correctly. Anything that takes down the NIC and brings it up again (such as changing the gateway address) will work until the next time you reboot.
    Update the WMware driver in your CUPS
    With the CUPS running in WMware use VM/Install WMware tools.
    Then on the CLI of CUPS enter: utils vmtools upgrade
    You can also check which versions of the WMware driver is installed with: utils vmtools status

  • Open-vm-tools 2012.03.13-2 not working on VMware Workstation 8.0.2

    Hi,
    I followed instructions on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … _in_VMware.
    Problem 1[Solved]:
    vmware-user-suid-wrapper does not start automatically but i did add it to ~/.xinitrc.
    .xinitrc File content:
    exec ck-launch-session gnome-session
    vmware-user-suid-wrapper
    [Solution 1]
    removed vmware-user-suid-wrapper from ~/.xinitrc and created this file:
    /etc/xdg/autostart/vmware-user.desktop
    [Desktop Entry]
    Type=Application
    Name=VMWare User Agent
    Exec=/usr/bin/vmware-user-suid-wrapper
    Icon=system-run
    Comment=Enable Unity, DnD, etc.
    Problem 2:
    drag & drop is not working in GNOME standard mode (works in fallback mode), clipboard copy&paste is working. XFCE4 seems to be working OK.
    Problem 3:
    Unity is not working at all, I get the message that vmware tools are not installed.(Not working both in GNOME and XFCE4)
    Installed Software:
    Linux version 3.3.2-1-ARCH (tobias@T-POWA-LX) (gcc version 4.7.0 20120407 (prerelease) (GCC) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Apr 14 09:48:37 CEST 2012
    open-vm-tools 2012.03.13-2
    gnome-shell 3.4.1-1
    Kind Regards,
    Robert
    Subject History:
    <<First version of question>> I reverted to a minimal arch install snapshot and did a re-install of gnome,open-vm-tools. The glibmm-2.4 problems magically disappeared (somehow it was fucked up)
    Hi,
    I followed instructions on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … _in_VMware.
    3D Acceleration is working and GNOME does not start in fallback mode, however I can not get Unity, Drag&Drop and Clipboard to work.
    open-vm-tools daemon is running. I have also added  vmware-user-suid-wrapper to ~/.xinitrc.
    I also tried to upgrade my whole system from the testing repositories, by doing this I get open-vm-tools 2012.03.13-2(release 2). With release 2 of the same tools clipboard is working but still no luck with drag&drop and Unity.
    Im also trying to build my own version of open-vm-tools 2012.03.13-1(I would like to use it as a template to later build official open-vm-tools stable-8.8.2 package), but makepkg fails. I tried to add -fpermissive flag to CXXFLAGS in /etc/makepkg.conf but it doesnt help. Log trace at the end of this msg.
    Installed packages and Software:
    open-vm-tools 2012.03.13-1
    GNOME 3.4.1-1
    Linux version 3.3.2-1-ARCH (tobias@T-POWA-LX) (gcc version 4.7.0 20120407 (prerelease) (GCC) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Apr 14 09:48:37 CEST 2012
    Thanks for you help. Sorry for the question but I'm a Widows n00b, trying to get a grip on Linux.I really like Arch, because I love control over my box.
    Kind Regards,
    Robert

    So far there isn't a good systemd script for vmware-workstation-server yet, but it can be started manually with:
    # /etc/init.d/vmware-workstation-server start
    Though this doesn't check the box in the GUI, you can interact with the Shared VM's tab in the VMWorkstation library just fine.

    thank you  for  your help

    Then try re-installing the package. (of course as root)
    Seems like a broken / incomplete installation.
    I guess you've got a .bundle file for installing.
    When you want to install, first change in to the directory where the package is located. then write
    chmod +x name-of-file.bundle
    . If that fails, try as sudo.
    Then you type in
    sudo ./name-of-file.bundle
    Replace 'name-of-file' with the true name of your installer file

    EDIT: just figured out that there is a vmware-workstation package in the AUR. Tried it out and works fine.

  • Install vCMA in VMware Workstation?

    I would like to install vCMA for iPad vSphere client demo purposes on my laptop.  Two questions:
    Is vCMA 64-bit?
    Can I run vCMA as a VMware Workstation VM (not as an appliance in ESXi)?
    When I try to import the OVF into Workstation is gives me a bad descriptor error.
    -MattG

    Hi Matt,
    Apparently, current vCMA is based on CentOS 5.2 32-bit . Check with "cat /etc/issue" and "uname -a" .
    It should run fine on a Workstation or even Player as long as it can access your ESX or vCenter through the network.
    I simply downloaded the Zip file, uncompressed and opened it without any issue.
    Good luck.
    Regards
    Franck
