VDP using PDF as Input

Adobe planned for printer manufacturer to use PDF Engine few years back
Finally now you start see large digital printer manufactures like Xerox is releasing color 70+ Pages Per Minute print engine support PS 3 and PDF side by side.
This is new for 2013!
And it is expected to increase to all ranges of printers and all vendors.
Does anybody see VDP/personalization applications developed which based on accepting data stream as PDF !
I know PlanetPress and GMC now supporting PDF input data stream side by side as raw data
However I still see speed , more feature and control can only acheive if the data stream is raw data
e.g. Text , ASCII , EBCDIC , CSV , TAB Delimited and XML

Still using input raw format like Text , CSV , XML and use Postscript for formatting will give much more speed and great more features in formatting than using PDF/VT. - it was even confirmed through the presentation !
Exactly what additional formatting features do you think Text, CSV, and XML with PostScript can give you when in fact PostScript is in fact has only a subset of the PDF imaging model?
Most large systems systems like Billing , Invoicing , Core Banking can output in any way you want , text , CVS, Tab Delimited , XML and also PDF !   it is faster and require no additional programming to output in CSV or XML (widely preferred) not PPML but just XML , tags without any image or graphics.
Strictly speaking, those systems you refer to print “variable data” just as every data processing program back to the days of the earliest business applications did on such dinosaur equipment as IBM 1403N1 line printers with streams of EBCDIC characters and carriage tape controls. And that's exactly the type of printing that is gradually but surely going away. For that transactional material, PDF/VT is certainly usable, but may be overkill. But when we talk about VDP these days, we generally are referring to personalized marketing materials that have minimal if any transactional data but are very graphically-rich and simply cannot readily be expressed with the page description languages or the protocols you enumerate.
When I said Adobe never put any engineering I meant development!    Of course the support and liaison with manufacturer and OEM will remain.   Every desktop laser Printer in the world has PS built in or an option !!
Adobe does have “engineering resource” working on our PostScript implementation albeit not new language features.
Perhaps this is might be a point to you too !!   As All RIP manufacturers Like EFI , Creo , had invested millions dollars over the last 20 years to provide Rip based on Postscript with its color management   etc !
Creo no longer exists other than the remnants of a brand name. Creo was acquired by Eastman Kodak a number of years back. Both EFI and Kodak are actively investing in Adobe PDF Print Engine support for PDF/VT. PostScript for them, like most of our OEMs is pretty much a maintenance issue.
All Software vendors for VDP had also invested multi million dollars to create their systems based on raw data input to Postscript engine!
And they are all now investing primarily in supporting PDF/VT output because simply stated, they can't get all those great graphics effects that they can generate to print otherwise!
Last but not the least , many end users had created their work and training using famous VDP packages which is based on input raw data (CSV , Text , Records, XML , EBCDIC etc ) and output to Postscript.
It is totally irrelevant what the raw input is to the VDP packages (such as XMPie, Darwin, DirectSmile, etc.). Certainly those will continue to be either direct database links or CSV, plain old text, XML, etc. Users who are trained to input such data to VDP packages don't need to be retrained for PDF/VT output. In fact, for most printers, handling PDF/VT will be much easier than other formats since it enforces a single, common PDF print publishing workflow including support for viewing, preflighting, proofing, etc. How in the world do you preflight PostScript, PPML, or any of the other formats other than perhaps ... converting them somehow to PDF?!?

I have a client application which will prepare number of source files and some meta data information (in .XML) which will be used in header/footer. Is it possible to put a run time generated DDX file in the watch folder and use it in Process. If possible how can I pass the file names in the DDX. Any sample Process will be very helpful.

Watched folder can accept zip files (sample : Configuring a watched folder to handle multiple input files and write results to a single folder | Adobe LiveCycle Blog ). How do I use the analog input (ADC) to drive a motion profile in MAX

We are trying to use an anolog input signal from a DAQ card to control the motion contol axis. For now, we want the motor speed to follow a sinusoidal voltage waveform, and later on, we will be using a more complex velocity profile.
In order to accomplish this task, we have searched the user forum, and found information suggesting to operate the servo motor in 'slave' mode under the 'gearing' option. Therefore, we have set the Gear Master to 'ADC Channel-1', Mode set to 'absolute', Gear ratio 1:1, and provided the sinusoidal voltage (+/- 5V, 3 Hz) to the AIN1 connector on the MID-7654 controller. When using the 1-D Interacitve 'single axis' control panel, the motor runs at constant speed in one direction only. It does not react to the sinusoidal speed profile request as we expected.
How do we 'turn on' the 'slave' mode in MAX? Please talk us through the necessary steps and settings? Thanks.

Staffan,
you can configure and enablethe Gearing mode in MAX and it should be activated after saving the settings and initializing the board. In 1D-Interactive you can't use Gearing. For better flexibility I recommend not using MAX for configuring and enbling Gearing. You better should do this in your application.
In fact there is a perfect LabVIEW-example that ships with the NI-Motion driver (Master Analog Input - Slave Axis Gearing.vi)

i want to know whether Acrobat Reader which displays the files using PDF extension is included as a part of Internet Explorer or does Acrobat reader needs t obe installed separately. Please help in solving my doubt.

Can a ComboBox be used for Text Input ?

In Ms Access the combo box can be used for text input for creating new lines in the Database instead of just being limited to the lines already there in the drop down list. Is this possible with the combo box available in Flex 4. If it is I haven't being successful in getting it to work.

I am using a Dataservices Commit method to write to the Database via a button on the screen
When I type into the ComboBox's text input and click outside the combobox or on the commit button the application effectively freezes
SituationService is a CRUD type servicePHP to MYSQL and it works with the Datagrid

Use pdf.ocx or AcroPDF.dll to open a pdf file in a form

I have this kind of problem.
I need to open a pdf in a form, just for reading.
Even if my project is written in VB6, this is not the problem. It could be also in .NET, so I hope you don't reply anything about the development platform.
In a couple of threads, I found two ways to open a pdf in a form: using pdf.ocx or acropdf.dll.
In both cases, this solution works for me in debug, but not in deployed release.
I have two kind of problems:
- if the computer where I execute the program HAS NOT Adobe Reader installed, I have an error "missing dependencies" concerning acropdf.dll or pdf.ocx
- if the computer where I execute the program has Adobe Reader installed, I have an error concerning dll or ocx file version.
The solution works only if the AcroPDF.dll file included in my project has a version equal to the Adobe Reader version installed on the customer's computer.
How can I solve these problems?
The best would be if I could use one of this components without installing Adobe Reader.
If this is not possible, my further question is: if the Adobe Reader version installed on the customer's computer is greater than my AcroPDF.dll, will my project work?

PDF.OCX was an UNSUPPORTED COMPONENT that stopped being included as of Adobe Reader 7. Also, VB6 support stopped with Reader 7 as well. As Adobe only supports Reader 8 and later, there is no need to worry about either.
AcroPDF.dll is part of Reader - it isn't available separately. So yes, your users will need to have Adobe Reader 8 or later installed on their computer.
As long as you target Reader 8 or above, and AcroPDF.dll - you'll work with Reader 8, 9 and X...

How to get the Bookmarks in pdf file by using pdf.js library

In my application i am using PDF.js library to view the pdf files. Now i want to fetch the bookmark details which was already set in the pdf page. How could i get the those bookmark details by using pdf.js library. is there any specific methods available in pdf.js library to get that?

I asked #pdfjs and we would need you to clarify what you mean by "bookmark"
This is where the bookmarks in a pdf are populated [https://github.com/mozilla/pdf.js/blob/master/web/viewer.js#L1032] however you will have to customize what to do with them.

Problems viewing PDF documents created on a scanner using PDF version 1.6 (Acrobat 7.x)

We multiple Xerox scanners and not all of them operate on the same version of software/firmware. 1 of our scanners uses PDF Version 1.4 (Acrobat 5.x) when scanning a doucment to our network and 1 of our scanners uses PDF Version 1.6 (Acrobat 7.x). When using Adobe Reader 9.x both documents open properly and are 100% visible. After upgrading to Adobe Reader X, the scans created using the newer version of PDF (1.6) have some missing text/images on the pages and have a grey "overlay" on the page. Again, Reader 9 will view both files properly, but Reader X will not. Any help is appreciated. I have fiddled around with several of the view settings to no avail. Thanks.

That is hardly a solution, the whole purpose of upgrading to Adobe Reader X is to avoid potential threats. There is obviously a problem with Adobe Reader X and veiwing certain documents that needs to be addressed and the way to address it should not reside with "Use Adobe 9 and Adobe 10 and pick whatever version works for your document"

Generation of report in landscape mode using PDF template

Hi,
I am creating a report using pdf template, I have used the repeating group i.e I have used the code <?rep_field="BODY_START"?> and <?rep_field="BODY_END"?> as the repeating area and with the field which needs to be repeated i have used the code <?rep_field="T1_G1"?> in order to display data in the loop.
But finally when the report is displayed, the report acts strange ...sometimes it fails to open says that an internal file read error occured , whereas if I remove the <?rep_field="T1_G1"?> code it works fine , other times if at all it displays the report, the values in the repeating field operlap each other and they are vertically oriented wheras for landscape mode it should be vertical, I tried setting the properties and locking the fileds but all in vain.
Kindly help ASAP!!

I have had the same problem for a year. I never got my TAR answered so I tried again. I am waiting...again. Portrait works fine for me. I am using it to generate po's with custom headers. The only part that does not work for me is the total appears on every page, not just the last one. If I get an answer, I will let you know...

Using pdfs in iba files

Ok I have a client that has a book in pdf's Obviously these will be treated like images so I took 5 pdfs and sis a test .ibooks file and I notice a few things.
I will not need a table of contents or sections, since I did this as a test I used one of the sections templates.
Should I just use a blank page?
next is I notice that if I add a pdf page to any chosen page template looking at the view in landscape it looks fine but I see that there is another view in portrait, with that mentioned, if I want the book to have two views I assume I have to do add the same pdfs to the portrait view am I correct? If so I'm using the same pdf pages twice for each page which will make the book heacy ( is this a problem as there are 80 pages in the book?)
last question, I'm not an epub guru but I can see that iba is more for text heavy books then using pdf files. Would you suggest I use pages, where I did a test fiel there and it outputs to epub which is fine but I do not have any templates with TOC's or sections.

OK, doing some tests and I see the following
In iba the pages which are pdfs are too small to read the text in either portrait or landscape
In pages even though the epub looks a bit more like a book the text is too small to read.
now with that mentioned, should I have the client send me the files which were originally done in microsoft publisher?
( problem there already as they have to convert the file to word as publisher cannot be opened, only by the app that created.
But, if this is the case I would assume that I should use iba as I believe since I have to reformat all the text should be a bit easier than doing the reformatting in pages?
Here is a screenshot of one page so I would have the header, fotter then body text styles to do. If I have to do this we are looking at a load of extra time to do this, correct?

As one of my menu options in a current iDVD project, I have a series of illustrated documents in TextEdit which I have converted to PDF (Problem is, I can't find the orig. TextEdit file, so must use the PDF) that the viewer can click through using the screen arrows. I haven't built the disc yet, so am not sure if the PDF will be accessible to someone watching on a set top player, or, for that matter, on a computer that hasn't got Acrobat Reader. If using PDF is going to be a problem, I thought of converting the pages to jpegs in Photoshop or redoing the pages in TextEdit(a lot of work)...any successful suggestions for having a text slide show?
Other Question: My 2003 G4 came with a Superdrive that doesn't support DVD-RW discs. I heard there was a workaround to fool the burner into accepting them - something to do with putting in a DVD-R disc and then removing it and substituting the RW one. I'd appreciate clear instructions for this procedure, please.

You can use Photoshop to convert the PDF files into TIF/JPG files that you can use. Remember that 'all you have to play with' is 640x480 pixels so I hope your documents aren't too detailed.

Yes, that's what we did with versions prior to iDVD 5. When asked to insert a DVD, insert a DVD-R, AS SOON AS IT IS RECOGNIZED, hold down the disk eject key, immediately remove the DVD-RW and replace it with a DVD-RW disc.

"use pdf reader name" choice is not shown even after deleting "mimetypes.rdf" file

Multiple tabs open when attempting to open PDF files. Have updated Acrobat Reader to latest version X. Have followed trouble shooting instructions to select from drop-down menu the choice "use pdf reader name" (tools-options-application- Adobe). Followed the additional instruction to delete the "mimetypes.rdf" file if the "use pdf reader name" choice does not appear. I have changed the product because it seems that you are taking about the Firefox for Desktop Browser. If this is incorrect please post back with a correction.
I also understand that you are downloading songs, and instead of the save dialogue, you are being taken to a black page to play the song. Please see if this happens in Safe Mode, as well when you troubeshoot any default programs if you are using Windows.

Using PDF files in books

Does anyone know how I can use PDF files when creating Iphoto books? I am doing various photo books and want to add a few image/design pdf's to the book.

Here's how to get any file into iPhoto as a jpeg file:
1 - open the file in any application that will open it.
2 - type Command+P to start the print process.
3 - click on the PDF button and select "Save PDF to iPhoto".
NOTE: If you don't have any of those options go to Toad's Cellar and download these two files:
Save PDF to iPhoto 200 DPI.workflow.zip
Save PDF to iPhoto 200 DPI.workflow.zip
Unzip the files and place in the HD/Library/PDF Services folder and reboot.
4 - select either of the files above (300 dip is used for photos to be included in a book that will be ordered).
5 - in the window that comes up enter an album name or select an existing album and hit the Continue button.
That will create a 200 or 300 dpi jpeg file of the item being printed and import it into iPhoto.
