VDSL Modem issues

I have had Infinity for about two years and it has been solid - until about three months ago when I started losing access. Firstly about once per week, now up to two or three times a day. Each time the vDSL modem needs a restart (not the HH or Router) and everything is the OK. Sometimes the DSL light goes off on the modem when the problem occurs, sometimes not.
It is possible to retrieve logs from the vDSL modem? Any other issues I should be looking for?
My PC and devices are both wired and wireless, but it is connectivity from the modem to the cabinet that is lost, not connectivity from the devices to the router.

Hi CharlesElliott
Hopefully your IP profile has not been compromised by all of the dropouts. Have you checked that?

Run the first test and then Further Diagnostics to reveal your profile details.
Hope that helps - if you found this useful, then please click the white start to the left of this post

  • TC in Bridge Mode with ISP router vs TC as Ethernet with VDSL modem

Hi, I have a time capsule. It's the newest generation of the old shape/design - i.e second to newest version. It's running 7.6.4. firmware.
I recently updgraded my ISP to Fibre VDSL and the ISP sent me a crappy router with a built-in modem that you have to use. I checked the ISP support forums and found plenty of advice to configure the TC over ethernet with this router using the DMZ of the router etc. Anyway, I got it all working but i wasn't happy. port forwarding was a pain and you end up with double NAT issue - not surprising.
The alternative config was to switch the TC to 'bridge mode' so the crappy ISP router does the NAT / DHCP, port forwarding, dpnp, internet routing. I got this all working and i have made sure that all of my network nodes/clients (wired and wifi) are all off the TC and only use the ISP router for internet, dhcp etc. This is all working with good speeds, solid internet access but...
Major issues with airplay (use this a lot) and also with stuff like facetime etc. The connection is much faster (40mbps down/10mbps up) than my old ASDL setup but as I said, key services that I use are not as stable.
I think my only alternative solution is to buy a VDSL modem seperately and use the TC as the router i.e. go back to my old config with TC doing all the routing, port forwarding etc.
Does anyone here have a view as to whether this is worth trying? I'm hoping that it if the TC is doing all the routing, I will get less drop outs and services will work as they should. On the other hand, I hoped airplay would be OK as it's a wifi/Lan service rather than WAN but I have had quite a few issues.
Appreciate any help with this and sorry for the lengthy note!
    Jata.

In theory, you will do better by using a simple bridge mode modem and then setting up the Time Capsule as the router to provide DHCP and NAT services.
But, as you might imagine, it is not possible to predict whether your results will actually be better using this type of setup.
Worth a try, in my opinion, if you can find a store that will let you return the modem for credit if it does not do what you want.
Even a simple modem will still likely have to be configured to operate in bridge mode, but the setup should only take a few minutes using the web based configuration interface.
Let us know how things are working if you can, if you decide to the try the simple modem approach.

  • VDSL modem in sync, HH3 and HH2v2 power cycles int...

Dear All, Firstly this is my first post on the forums so hello to all. On to my topic, A friend of mine has a very very interesting FTTC fault. The VDSL modem is in sync, but the HH3 from 3 blue lights, will suddenly shut off and restart. This happens any ware between every 10-45 mins. Here is the fun bit: Engineers have replaced the modem and the HH3 3 times. They have even tried a HH2 infinity router which lasted longer than the 3 but to no avail. The modem and Router are both plugged into a surge protector. They have both been tried on regular sockets. The VDSL modem is always happy, in sync but the routers are being power cycled. There is no line issues, no CRCs as the engineers have said. The speeds to the VDSL modem are all fine, and the speed of the BB is working fine, its just the random power cycling of the routers that has everyone stumped. Yes its been turned off and on Yes its all plugged in Yes all cables have been tried and tested One Ethernet device, other wireless laptops There is no trigger, weather simple MSN text or HD streaming there seems to be no trigger as such for the router So tech guys, i would not bother you with a simple one, here is the mystery, whats the theory's?

After a worrying start very nice replies thanks guys! so firstly
@ HH replacements he had one, BT sent him one and the engineer used one. I know for a fact these are all from different batches.
@ channel changing Not only would the amount of random channels the smart wireless would have been using with the ammount of swaps, the engineer set the wireless channel whilst doing interrogations on the router.
@ electircal supply Here was the ebst bit, the engineer knows about REIN (f Repetitive Electrical Impulse Noise). In the room with the router there are LOTS of powerboards and power adaptors link multiple supplys. There are pets, a pc, standard sky tv boxs and relavant go withs. SO yeah lots of stuff. The uncle is a sparky, checked the house and said all good. We have a UPS (i think thats what it is called) which can deliver a constant voltage no matter what, even from that it was going fine then boom power cycle.
Feed back from 12 hour obs: The HH2 apparently has made it much more berable, taking around an hour or more till it resets. Engineer came round and did a lift and shift to get a new port from the dslam. At that point the engineer had been told he had to leave, but he justified it. There was nothing else that they can do, port, line, socket, HH modem have all been eliminated from the enquiery.
At this point the router had been moved by the enginner to the best poisbble location in the lounge for it to not be near a source of potential REIN. Then he told us that he wanted to find out what the problem was because it was a "mystery" and he was interested. He told about REIN and how to test for it (AKA long time of having not a lot plugged in and before anyone got mad (and lets be real this guy was not just going to come over and say "sorry man we don't know how to fix this" ) he also advised us to talk to our Service provide (aka BTR ) and to tell them what the issues are. So what do people think of this ?

  • VDSL modem/routers and FTTC self-install

Has anybody seen any more information related to this story? The possibility of using VDSL combined modem/routers and customer self-installation looks interesting.

    Can see it now;
Customer: I was told I should get 76/19 but at best get 7/0.9
Engineer: Lets have a look at your set up.
Customer: Well, there is the master socket, well what I think is the master socket (the actual master socket is normally hidden away behind a wall unit) with an FTTC Filter, I then have a double adaptor with a 25 metre untwisted aliminium extension reel I bought from Wilko's. On the end of that is another FTTC Filter with 2 adaptors squeezed into it for my Sky Box, phone and another 10 metre untwisted aliminium extension reel which lead to yet another FTTC Filter with my VDSL Modem on it.
That's not funny, I've already seen so called engineer installed FTTC connections like that. Hate to think what it's going to be like with self install (Nightmare I think).

  • VDSL Modem

    Hi,
My VDSL modem as gone ti* up.
I do not wish to purchased from ebay is there any official outlet where Im able to purchase a BT Openreach VDSL modem?
if the answer is no, can any inform me how I am then able to use my own router? Im not techincal so require VERY simply replies
Can you use the HH5 but disable the router element so you are just using the modem for example?
    Thnak to all in advance
    Lee

As stjp has said, if you want an official white openreach modem, then your only real avenue is to purchase one off of that well-known auction site.
That having been said, if you do a search for VDSL modem routers, then there are some options from the major manufacturers.
What I would suggest is to go to one of the specialist suppliers, such as broadband buyer and speak with one of their sales agents, who can suggest an all-in-one unit that meets both your needs and ultimately, your budget.
    I hope this info helps.

  • Alternative VDSL Modem/Router for Infinity

    Hi,
I'm using BT Infinity and am thinking about replacing the Home Hub and VDSL modem with an alternative. Ideally I want a combined unit so it will probably be a FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7390 as there isn't a vast amount of choice at the moment (hurry up Draytek). So I have a couple of questions:
Has anybody done this? I'm not interested if you've just replaced the router, but has anyone replaced both the modem and the router or just the modem?
Does anyone know if there's any reason why it would not be possible (does the BT equipment do anything special or identify itself in some way)?
Does anyone know the correct Modem settings?
    Thanks,
    LJ

I have just purchased the Fritz!box 7390 VDSL Integrated system to replace the two boxes you get with Infinity. However, irrespective of what configuration I enter into the new router I am unable to actually login.
It certainly sees BT Infinity and I am getting connectivity at layer 2 and the new Router is showing good upstream and downstream speeds, but I cannot login with either the default credentials or the BT credentials provided to me when I bought the service!
Anyone know how to get this router or any other router working and with what settings, cause I think I have tried them all..LOL
    Thanks in advance G

  • OSX 10.4.10/Apple USB Modem issue

    Hi there:
3 weeks ago I bought a new imac and also an apple usb modem (since we only have dial up where I live).
I wasn't having a problem at all with connecting to the internet.
I am online virtually most of the day and, at night, I disconnect and put my computer to sleep.
Now every morning when I go to connect, it just says "connecting" endlessly, with no dial tone....YES, the phone line is working.
It does nothing to disconnect the phone line, the modem etc.
If you click "disconnect" it just says "disconnecting" endlessly.
I am forced to shut down the computer and reboot to make it stop and reset itself and then I can connect to the internet just fine.
The only thing I can think of that changed since when I first got the computer is that I upgraded to OSX 10.4.10.
Does anyone know if this is a 10.4.10 issue or a modem issue?
I posted this in the old hardware forum as well....
    Help!
    Thanks!

I don't know how much of a Mac background you have, so forgive me if I state the obvious. Before and after any upgrade you should be repairing permissions (in Disk Utilities). There are some AOL issues with this modem if you use that ISP. I am having a problem with my usb modem not dialing for sending a fax @ work until I uncheck "wait for dialtone" but I am dialing through a work phone system. I have not figured out how to make this the default setting. Since you have a new iMac, you should call Apple Support by your misbehaving phone line.
    Good Luck

  • Time Capsule with BT Infinity modem issues

    Hello all
I am attempting to set up my Time Capsule as the router and wifi, connected directly to the BT Infinity (UK based broadband provider) modem.
I have been using my MacBook Pro (mid 2010, Yosemite 10.10.1) and Airport Utility to configure the settings so far. I've managed to connect the TC and have created two wifi networks.
I have since been experiencing intermittent problems with the TC not appearing on the network, via AU on my MBP. However, when this does happen, the wifi seems to work OK. Can anyone explain why this might be so, and how to remedy this issue?
I have connected my Sonos ZonePlayer to the TC, but when the TC disconnects, the Sonos ZP then needs to be set up again.
I have also connected my Panasonic TX-50AX802 to the 2.4 network on my TC. This all worked fine at first, but then after the TC disconnected and wasn't available, the TV is unable to maintain a wi-fi connection. How might this issue be resolved?
I also have my iPhone 5s and iPad connected to the TC (both running iOS 8.1.1). These seem to be working OK. I haven't experienced any issues connecting with the TC via Airport Utility on my iPhone.
I would be grateful for any assistance with this as I have only a very limited understanding of the technical aspects of creating a network.
    Thanks

    In a word.
    Yosemite
The fix is to use a better OS.. eg anything before Yosemite.
Sorry but Yosemite is bug filled and causes wireless issues.. take a quick look around this discussion.. 3 out of 4 issues will be yosemite since it came out.
On old laptop and especially if you upgrade installed.. then you really need to go back to earlier OS.. or at least clean install Yosemite and try again.
It can actually cause issues in combo with your iOS 8 due to the new handoff protocols which apple need to work a lot harder on fixing.
    Problems in wireless with yosemite.

Turn off the computer.. reboot the TC.. do any other other devices have issues? Panasonic TV or Sonos?? if not the computer is the cause.
You might alleviate some of the worst effects by setting up the TC again.
    Please use the following.
    1. TC main name really short.. eg TCgenx (x actual number of the Gen if you like).
    2. Set wireless names TC24ghz and TC5ghz.
    3. Lock the wireless channels so they cannot change. eg use 13 or 11 for 2.4ghz
Use 100 for 5ghz.. but whatever works for you..
    4. Test with no security.. briefly to make sure that all is working.
    5. Set security as soon as you can.. WPA2 personal.. 8-20 character password no spaces.. no non-alphanumeric characters.. mixed case and numbers.

  • Modem issues solved with 10.4.8?

    Hi all,
As the Apple USB modem users know, there was a serious issue with the IOUSB kernel in 10.4.7 that made the external Apple modem very unreliable. This issue was solved by downgrading that kernel to the 10.4.5 version. I've not done the 10.4.8 upgrade (mostly cause my MB is at the shop for RSD) but I don't want to mess with a perfectly working modem right now. Does anyone has tried the upgrade and found that the modem is working allright?
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for this insight. I had the same symptoms as yours after installing 10.4.7. I couldn't maintain a connection.
My left USB port was malfunctoning. Apple's advice was to use the right one and wait for an update for this known issue. I did so for some weeks with relative success.
It seems that there is more than one way to lose a connection.
Just yesterday I experienced a panic, a disabling bout of conection failures and then "power management" problems. Those were resolved for the moment by reseting the power management and PRAM. 3 times.
Today I have developed a previously unknown to me "known issue" - booting to a gray screen. Video fails to mount? The PRAM must be reset at every start up.
Apple's advice is to upgrade to 10.4.8. I am trepidatious and hungry for reports from others with any of my sympoms and their experiences with 10.4.8.

  • Having serious Safar/2wire 2701HB modem issues!

I use AT&T as my service provider.  Have 2wire modem, version 2701HB.  I have my desktop and two laptops conected to it.  At times it works great, but at least a dozen times an hour it won't load the webpage.
I'll be surfing without an issue and then Safari gives me the "you are not connected to the internet" message.  The lights on the modem were all green, but once it happens the internet light goes black and the DSL will blink red.   A minute or so later with all the lights solid green again on the modem, the webpage won't reload/refresh.  I must go to different webpage to continue to surf.
The AT&T tech person did several tests and said that everything looks fine.
I called AT&T and the level 2 tech person had me deselect the "Packet Flood" in the advance setting mode in the modem's firewall.  She said it was maybe causing the firewall to causing the "You are not connected to the interent" message.  It didn't work.  I downloaded the google plus browser and it hasn't hung up or not loaded a webpage for over an hour.
    Any answers?

I had these same problems as well. Wish I had the 2Wire where I am now to give you exact instructions, but I figured out a solution that worked for my computer.
First, go into the Management Console of your 2Wire at the address: http://gateway.2wire.net/management
Now, in the Advanced tab, click Configure Services. Once you are there, de-check the boxes for all "notifications" about connections or the like.
Turning off those notices made my system work perfectly.
What is happening is that the 2Wire steals the IP or DNS address to the site you were at when it had a problem and will keep redirecting you to those error pages. Turning on/off your Airport often resolves that, but I'd go into the router settings and turn off those notifications.
    Hope this helps.

  • MYSTERY MODEM issues!

My internet situation should have a reality TV series.
And my modem is magical! Apparently........ it's a mystery!! A mystery no one can solve.
I actually have a document with all of my Verizon internet issues since 2012.
That was not a typo. 2012!!!!!!!
I've spent countless hours chatting with agents, both on the phone and on the computer. It took at least 12 hours worth of chats, and a new modem (which didn't do anything) but I finally got Verizon to send a technician to my house. Guess what he found.
    Nothing.
He ran tests on my line, and then the next time my internet went out, I called him and he ran tests remotely again. He found nothing wrong. And he had no idea what to tell me as far as my issues go. So now what? I just deal with it?
I'm not calling to chat again, to have someone give me the same runaround I've done 473829374 times:
Are you typing the right password into your modem?
Are there any filters between your phone jack and the modem?
Are there any filters anywhere in your house?
Can you take your computer from all the way across the house, disassemble it, and connect it directly to the modem?
Can you go into your modem settings and retype the password just to be sure?
Have you rebooted your computer and modem?
My internet constantly randomly goes out, all different times of the day, sometimes once a day, sometimes once a week.
Sometimes the internet light stays on and it reconnects by itself. Sometimes the light goes out and stays out.
When I reboot the modem everything is fine. But I want to know why I am losing my connection in the first place. Why must I reboot all of the time like this?
I work from home, and am a student taking online classes. I have been a Verizon customer for at least 15 years. If I'm paying for service, I expect to get what I'm paying for.

FYI, you're talking to customers here.
Login to your modem and go the the connection status page.  You'll find the SNR (signal-to-noise) readings for both downstream and upstream data.  Some of the folks who hang out here can tell you if the SNR readings are good, bad or marginal.
    Enjoy.

  • E71 modem issue

    Hi All,
I am from Delhi and I am having connection of Airtel .
Today i updated my PC Suite to version 7.1.30.9 . Now when I connect to Internet using USB modem it connects at a speed of 115 kbps max and say 'Nokia E71 USB Modem (OTA)' connected. Speed is low
Earlier it was getting connected at 480 kbps on Edge and speed was good.
Why this is happening?? What is OTA?? Is this issue with current PC Suite update??
    How to solve
    Regards,
    Knowledge Is Power Share It
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    hi there,
    OTA is Over-the-air  connection
Regarding the connection u might of got the modem settings wrong there
In windows network connections u have the Nokia USB modem icon notification right click on it select properties in general tab u have an option called Connect using below that u have Configure tab click on it select Maximum speed to 460800 bps and once disconnect the modem and connect it u will get 480.7kbps speed
To be honest this has nothing to do with the connection speed because it solely depends on the Network operator connection
Regarding the E icon not appearing on the mobile still i feel its a network issue anyways u can try the above
    cheers.......

  • T41 Audio and Modem Issue (Need an expert opinion)

My T41 has been working great for years, suddenly when the computer went into standby and came out there was no audio output. No software had been changed recently and windows updates were disabled (to prevent SP3.) A simple reboot fixed the issue but then it occurred again when the computer went into standby. I assumed that it was a driver issue and uninstalled and reinstalled the driver with no success. The computer was showing the device in device manager with no errors. Now the device has flat out disappeared from device manager and the modem has disappeared as well and been replaced by a standard modem driver. At this point I reloaded Windows XP on the machine and installed all drivers for the machine. The audio device is still not present in device manager nor is the modem. The Soundmax installer gives error message "driver not found reboot your system" at the end of the install. Upon booting Knoppix it did not find an audio device either. Updated the BIOS with no success. Seems like a dead audio chip.. Can anyone think of anything else to try? There is not an option in my BIOS to enable/disable audio. Thoughts?

I don't like the fact that Knoppix hasn't found the audio device...you might be shopping for a sound card soon...
    Good luck.

  • The VDSL Modem

I understand that with the FTTH Modem it converts the light to electrical signals.
But why do we need the FTTC Modem I thought the signals convert at the cabinet?
    Experiment:
And what if someone tried plugging the Home Hub 3.0 straight into the master socket with the RJ11 Cable, with BT Infinity what would happen?

Because it needs to Modulate and Demodulate the DSL signal that is provided from the cabinet equipment. Essential all that has been done is the exchange equipment that provides regular ADSL broadband has been moved to the cabinet (different being VDSL).

  • 2nd vdsl modem installed today. now upload 0.6mb

    so as title really
First modem overheated, india tell me either cab or exchange fault.  Engineer comes out today and replaces modem with the line "were having to do alot of these".
    check speeds
i get 35mb ish down and 0.6mb up
before it was 39/10.  Engineer tells me to phone support for speed issues, which i have done, to be told, again by india that they have updated my speed it will be back to normal in 24 hours.
Speeds still sitting at the same now.
what should be the next step?

    Tried speedtester.bt.com.
Now got 31074Kbps download. Max achievable has been revised down to 33877Kbps. This is still OK.
Upload on speedtester.bt.com amazingly came back as 8070Kbps.
Now going back to speedtest, getting 33Mbps and 8Mbps.
So, all is well again. Either needed to settle in again or speedtester did something....
