VDSL modem/routers and FTTC self-install

Has anybody seen any more information related to this story? The possibility of using VDSL combined modem/routers and customer self-installation looks interesting.

Can see it now;
Customer: I was told I should get 76/19 but at best get 7/0.9
Engineer: Lets have a look at your set up.
Customer: Well, there is the master socket, well what I think is the master socket (the actual master socket is normally hidden away behind a wall unit) with an FTTC Filter, I then have a double adaptor with a 25 metre untwisted aliminium extension reel I bought from Wilko's. On the end of that is another FTTC Filter with 2 adaptors squeezed into it for my Sky Box, phone and another 10 metre untwisted aliminium extension reel which lead to yet another FTTC Filter with my VDSL Modem on it.
That's not funny, I've already seen so called engineer installed FTTC connections like that. Hate to think what it's going to be like with self install (Nightmare I think).

  • Modems, Routers and Hubs

I'm really trying to get a handle on this but it doesn't look promising. I have a NextNet wireless modem, a Linksys 4-port router and a linksys 5-port hub.
I am trying to connect the internet to my mac and Dell pc running windows xp.
There are times when both computers work well and times when neither will connect. Today is one of those times. I have to disconnect everything and plug the modem directly into the mac in order to get online. Same goes for the pc.
I'm not using the hub at all since, from an earlier post, I was told only a router would do the trick.
I have connected the mac and pc to the router, ports 1 and 2 (uplink switch is not depressed). I then connected the modem to the internet port. I get green lights on everything but cannot get on the internet. I've tried turning everything off. Then turning on the router, modem, mac and pc. Sometimes that works. I've also tried powering down and up the router. Same goes for the modem. Sometimes that works. Sometimes not. I've tried repairing permissions on the mac. I've done disk verifications. I've run macjanitor. If all I am able to do is plug and re plug the modem directly into the two computers for them to have internet service I will go rapidly insane.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    John

According to the box the model number is rsu-2510-av.
The only thing else on the unit is the provider's logo; plateau.
The specifications on the side of the box are:
    Standards: iee802.3 (10base-t)
    Net Protocols: IP eathernet
    Physical Interface: 10base-t rj-45
    Their website is: plateautel.com
    Is that any help?
It's also used. That may have a bearing.

  • I need help setting up a wireless network and getting connected to the internet. I have a RCN cable modem now and tried to install a wireless linksys today and it was a disaster

I have a MAC desktop and RCN cable that I have internet through now. I tried to set up a linksys wireless router today and could not get the network settings right, or figure out how to create the network, or get connected. I was successfull for only a few minutes because my phone and laptop had picked up the signal. However my desktop still would not connect to the internet. I had to restart my cable modem after because even after returning to directly inserting the desktop to the modem I could not get on the internet. I am able to get on now but would like to have wireless for my laptop and phone. Do I have to have an Apple router? Are there any easy steps I can take to set up a network without doing any damage to my desktop? I am so lost and have been getting pop ups and even my time changed.
Please help a new person to Apple!

why dont you go to linksys.com/downloads and get the quick install for your adpter

  • Changing self install date and installation

Couple of quetions, hope it's the right forum.
So I ordered the 3rd piece of the triple play bundle yesterday and have self install ready date of 9/20.  Is there any way I can make that sooner?
Also, I have ethernet from ONT to my router.  So when I install TV would I connect coax feed into house at the ONT and split coax to feed the two dvrs and one feed to the new router?
Also can I connect the new router to my router using wan port, or would I connect the ONT ethernet to WAN port of new router?
What type of flexibility is there for the settings in the new router?  Can I change/add SSID, advance routing, etc or is that disabled.?

    Larry,
afaik the setting for "Run as Admin" is per OS process. As the "Run Exe after installation" is a different process as the application you installed by it (e.g. "MyApplication.exe"), i wouldn't expect the MyApplication.exe to require/use admin-rights.

  • VDSL Modem

    Hi,
My VDSL modem as gone ti* up.
I do not wish to purchased from ebay is there any official outlet where Im able to purchase a BT Openreach VDSL modem?
if the answer is no, can any inform me how I am then able to use my own router? Im not techincal so require VERY simply replies
Can you use the HH5 but disable the router element so you are just using the modem for example?
    Thnak to all in advance
    Lee

As stjp has said, if you want an official white openreach modem, then your only real avenue is to purchase one off of that well-known auction site.
That having been said, if you do a search for VDSL modem routers, then there are some options from the major manufacturers.
What I would suggest is to go to one of the specialist suppliers, such as broadband buyer and speak with one of their sales agents, who can suggest an all-in-one unit that meets both your needs and ultimately, your budget.
    I hope this info helps.

  • TC in Bridge Mode with ISP router vs TC as Ethernet with VDSL modem

Hi, I have a time capsule. It's the newest generation of the old shape/design - i.e second to newest version. It's running 7.6.4. firmware.
I recently updgraded my ISP to Fibre VDSL and the ISP sent me a crappy router with a built-in modem that you have to use. I checked the ISP support forums and found plenty of advice to configure the TC over ethernet with this router using the DMZ of the router etc. Anyway, I got it all working but i wasn't happy. port forwarding was a pain and you end up with double NAT issue - not surprising.
The alternative config was to switch the TC to 'bridge mode' so the crappy ISP router does the NAT / DHCP, port forwarding, dpnp, internet routing. I got this all working and i have made sure that all of my network nodes/clients (wired and wifi) are all off the TC and only use the ISP router for internet, dhcp etc. This is all working with good speeds, solid internet access but...
Major issues with airplay (use this a lot) and also with stuff like facetime etc. The connection is much faster (40mbps down/10mbps up) than my old ASDL setup but as I said, key services that I use are not as stable.
I think my only alternative solution is to buy a VDSL modem seperately and use the TC as the router i.e. go back to my old config with TC doing all the routing, port forwarding etc.
Does anyone here have a view as to whether this is worth trying? I'm hoping that it if the TC is doing all the routing, I will get less drop outs and services will work as they should. On the other hand, I hoped airplay would be OK as it's a wifi/Lan service rather than WAN but I have had quite a few issues.
Appreciate any help with this and sorry for the lengthy note!
    Jata.

In theory, you will do better by using a simple bridge mode modem and then setting up the Time Capsule as the router to provide DHCP and NAT services.
But, as you might imagine, it is not possible to predict whether your results will actually be better using this type of setup.
Worth a try, in my opinion, if you can find a store that will let you return the modem for credit if it does not do what you want.
Even a simple modem will still likely have to be configured to operate in bridge mode, but the setup should only take a few minutes using the web based configuration interface.
Let us know how things are working if you can, if you decide to the try the simple modem approach.

"BTWholesale has revealed the seemingly imminent launch of a new ISP trial to test the operators first wires-only self install superfast broadband service (no engineer required), which could dramatically cut the setup cost and contract length of UK FTTC lines. A trial of VDSL Vectoring (faster FTTC speeds) is also on the cards."

You need to post your source.
Except you can't post external links but just type VDSL2 17a profile Vectoring Graphs, then read and look through some PDFs and you will see it clearly benefits people with short - medium lines.
External links are fine as long as they aren't advertising/promoting other ISP's products/services or for external e-commerce websites.

  • VDSL modem in sync, HH3 and HH2v2 power cycles int...

Dear All, Firstly this is my first post on the forums so hello to all. On to my topic, A friend of mine has a very very interesting FTTC fault. The VDSL modem is in sync, but the HH3 from 3 blue lights, will suddenly shut off and restart. This happens any ware between every 10-45 mins. Here is the fun bit: Engineers have replaced the modem and the HH3 3 times. They have even tried a HH2 infinity router which lasted longer than the 3 but to no avail. The modem and Router are both plugged into a surge protector. They have both been tried on regular sockets. The VDSL modem is always happy, in sync but the routers are being power cycled. There is no line issues, no CRCs as the engineers have said. The speeds to the VDSL modem are all fine, and the speed of the BB is working fine, its just the random power cycling of the routers that has everyone stumped. Yes its been turned off and on Yes its all plugged in Yes all cables have been tried and tested One Ethernet device, other wireless laptops There is no trigger, weather simple MSN text or HD streaming there seems to be no trigger as such for the router So tech guys, i would not bother you with a simple one, here is the mystery, whats the theory's?

After a worrying start very nice replies thanks guys! so firstly
@ HH replacements he had one, BT sent him one and the engineer used one. I know for a fact these are all from different batches.
@ channel changing Not only would the amount of random channels the smart wireless would have been using with the ammount of swaps, the engineer set the wireless channel whilst doing interrogations on the router.
@ electircal supply Here was the ebst bit, the engineer knows about REIN (f Repetitive Electrical Impulse Noise). In the room with the router there are LOTS of powerboards and power adaptors link multiple supplys. There are pets, a pc, standard sky tv boxs and relavant go withs. SO yeah lots of stuff. The uncle is a sparky, checked the house and said all good. We have a UPS (i think thats what it is called) which can deliver a constant voltage no matter what, even from that it was going fine then boom power cycle.
Feed back from 12 hour obs: The HH2 apparently has made it much more berable, taking around an hour or more till it resets. Engineer came round and did a lift and shift to get a new port from the dslam. At that point the engineer had been told he had to leave, but he justified it. There was nothing else that they can do, port, line, socket, HH modem have all been eliminated from the enquiery.
At this point the router had been moved by the enginner to the best poisbble location in the lounge for it to not be near a source of potential REIN. Then he told us that he wanted to find out what the problem was because it was a "mystery" and he was interested. He told about REIN and how to test for it (AKA long time of having not a lot plugged in and before anyone got mad (and lets be real this guy was not just going to come over and say "sorry man we don't know how to fix this" ) he also advised us to talk to our Service provide (aka BTR ) and to tell them what the issues are. So what do people think of this ?

  • Self install kit and failed video sik charges

My Comcast bill this month had a $15 charge for a "self install kit" and a $40 charge for “failed video sik”. Yes I was sent a self-install kit, but did not order one. I drove to the local Comcast office some 30 miles away to return it to unopened.  What I did order was a cable card, which I picked up at the local Comcast office.  After a full week of unsuccessful online troubleshooting and two 60 mile round trip visits to the Comcast office to exchange cable cards, it was suggested that a technician come out to my house. On 3/13 the technician arrived and after 5 minutes determined my issue was a "trap" on my cable line. After he removed it the cable card started working immediately. So after wasting a week of my time and two trips to the Comcast office you all reward my good nature by charging me $55. I can understand that there can be difficulties in setting up a new service, but I should not be charged when those difficulties were on your end not mine.

I am so frustrated right now. I also got a SIK charge on my new account with Comcast. I signed up with Comcast about 3 months ago. I am so busy, I didn't install
The equipment for about 6 weeks. I finally did it, but was unable to get the video to work. I called the customer Service multiple times. I even spoke to the technical department. They were unable to help me. After multiple phone calls I was told that I needed to have a technician come to my house. I said I did not want to pay for a technician. The customer service person said there would be no charge since it was not my fault. After two missed appointments the technician finally showed up. He was a very nice young gentleman who looked over my installation of my equipment and said I did a good job. The problem was the box was defective. It was not registered to my account.
The technician went to his vehicle and got a different box. He hooked it up, registered it to my account and it worked beautifully. He explained to me that the cable box that was originally sent out to me was defective. It had never been registered to my account. He apologized multiple times and left.
I just opened my newest bill from Comcast. To my surprise I had a $50 charge that says failed video S I K. I immediately called Comcast customer service. After speaking to one customer service rep And explaining the whole situation, she offered me one month free premium channel. I reminded her that this $50 charge was unfair since it was not my fault due to a bad installation. The problem was that Comcast sent me a defective cable box. She said she could not do anything for me and the $50 charge would remain on my bill and need to be paid as soon as possible. So I asked to speak to her supervisor.
The supervisor listened to the entire story about my defective cable box. He seemed very uninterested in the problem and simply stated that Bill will remain the same. He told me, "You'll need to pay the $50 as I'm not going to take it off your bill." I let him know that this was very unfair. And it felt a little bit like a scam to get money out of customers who are stuck. He was basically Unconcerned and pretty rude about the problem and let me know I had no alternatives.
So here I am...one more unhappy Comcast customer complaining about what has happened so many others. I just feel it's a real injustice for them to hit me with a $50 charge when it wasn't my problem to start with. They sent me defective equipment. I was never given the option just to mail back the cable box and receive a new one. They also never mentioned a $50 charge for the technician to come out to my home.
I don't know what else to do. Most companies, when you call customer service, they can understand the logic of a problem like this and they address it because they care about their reputation in the community. It's sad that this Company has become calloused to the needs of the customer.
I wish someone from Comcast would help me, as I love the high speed internet........

  • Being billed for self install kit that I never wanted nor received

I am being charged $14.99 for a self install kit that i never wanted. I only had Comcast for a little over a month and being charged $31.04. My original payment was just for internet only and nothing else. I bought my own modem, put it in myself. and everything worked great until i received my bill for $31.04.  I have tried multiple times trying to call and talk to someone trying to dispute that charge, but kept getting hung on. One representative i did talk to said he was going to transfer me to billing then hang up on me, his name was Oscar Ext. 5242. I was told that I would have to pay that "collections" payment before I could even talk to someone in billing. I never thought I would have to use a forum to get my issue accross but it seems that if the representatives cannot figure out what to do, they hang up and i can't wait 30-40 minutes of waiting each time to talk to a representative. Please respond quickly as I do want to upgrade my internet speed but I do not want to be charged for something i never wanted or received. I will provide more information if need be.

  • BT Infinity Self Install

I am going to be ordering FTTC after the new year as my cabinet just went live today!!
I have read elsewhere that with the Homehub 5 BT are going to roll out self installs (ie Engineer only vists cabinet not your house).  Has anyone heard when this is likely to happen.  I already have a filtered face plate fitted so this would be the ideal option for me.

    legitimise_sailing wrote:
I cant see why anyone is keen for self-install. Surely an engineer-install will give you better speed?
If I was going from ISP to ISP, fibre to fibre, then why not have self Install. I have the latest box on the wall. I have no trouble with my line.
I have had fibre for 3 years.
I am perfectly capable of installing a modem/router.
Will an engineer install do anything for me!!!! NO
What an engineer install might do is keep the cost UP.
So I'm keen on a self install, but at the same time if someone wants an engineer install then let them have it.

  • Self installed hard disks  in Miglia DualDisk  fail to mount

    Hi Guys!
Just bought the Miglia dualdisk casing (www.miglia.com) (with no hard disks inside) and decide to put 2 harddisks myself and construct my own raid.
specs for the Miglia casing is:
    Converter: 2* FireWire 800/IEEE 1394b ports (9 pins)
ATA Interface: Miglia Catalyst 912 (chipset: OXFW 912)
Hard Drives: self installed (both disk are of different capacity and have data in them. (they are linked with IDE connector)
    Rotational Speed: 2*7200 rpm
In short when i power it up, the harddisks spin, the fan turns, but no mounting of the disks onto my desktop.
    Thus the folowiing questions:
    a) Does it matter that both HD are of the same capacity? cos the two of them arent.
Is it true that different capacities will mount two individual harddisks icons while one icon of combined capacities will be mounted if both are of the same capacity?
b)Does it matter which drive is a master or slave? in this case, i set the drive connected to the ATA Interface: Miglia Catalyst 912 (chipset: OXFW 912) as the Slave and the other drive as the master.
    c) Both hard disks are IBM and Hitachi deskstar . i noticed that at the jumper settings, eg, for master: there are two ways of setting the jumper. it states 16 head or 15 head. what does that mean? how do i know if my hard disk is 15 or 16. In this case i tried setting the jumpers base on 16 head.
I am using allegro FW800 PCI Adaptor card, running with 10.2.8 or 10.4 (i tried both OSXs but both doesnt mount the harddisks too).
i am using powermac quicksliver (tink is 2002 - the one with two cd/ superdrive bays . not the mirror one), dual processor at 1ghz, bus speed 133 MHZ.
Can anyone enlighten me on this?
Thanks so much for your time!
    Ian

hmm...right now i just have two different capacities HD with mac data in them. I thought they will show up as 2 diff HD icons or folders.
so it is true that they have to be of the same capacities?
i will have to buy two new similiar capacities HD and format them and try again.
I cant format the two HD i have as they contain data.

  • Comcast Self Install Kit problems

Switching over to Comcast and received my install kit in the mail. I have a new Linksys cable modem and the wiring is on the money. Put the CD in and start going through the process. It first needed Internet Explorer to be re-installed to run. (ugh!) Then when it does start to "work" it discovers a "network adapter" which is good but then it asks for my password to finish the install. I put that in and it hangs up saying the pasword you entered is incorrect. This is the same password I use when installing all my new software. I don't yet have a comcast password since I haven't gotten to that point in the install. There has got to be a better way. I really do not want some comcast techie messing with my imac.
Anyone have any experience with this?

    Hi--
I have the modem router address and the MAC number
    from the modem.
If your state is like mine, you just need the MAC address of the cable modem. If I were you, I'd just give up on the installer and call Comcast.
Here's what's happening: when you hook up a new cable modem to Comcast's network, you get stuck in what's called a "walled garden" where, as you've found out, it tries to get you to download and install some software. My experience is that the software stomps all over your network settings, creates general havoc (including setting IE as your default browser), then, if it works at all, eventually dead-ends you at a last page where you're told to call a 1-800 phone number to call, with your cable modem's MAC address. You'll talk to a real live person for about 30 seconds, then you should be good to go. I think the number is 1-888-COMCAST.
