Vector Art & Fonts Don't Look Crisp After Final Render

I'm using AE CS3.
I've imported a few Illustrator files that contain vector art & regular text into my After Effects project.
It's basically a NTSC 720 x 480 project (0.9).
My composition looks very crisp and great when I preview it at full resolution.
However, after I render my composition to NTSC DV 720 x 480 AVI - the vector art and text doesn't look as crisp anymore.
I'm wondering if there is a setting I should check on before rendering (I rendered it at the best quality). Perhaps I should render to an uncompressed AVI file?

>Perhaps I should render to an uncompressed AVI file?
Well, you better... DV AVI is evil. Unless you really cannot avoid DV, always render to some uncompressed or only mildly compressed format. Premiere and otehr editing suites handle the conversion to DV/HDV way better than you ever could hope to achieve in AE. Also make sure you adjusted your levels correctly. A lot of DV "blurriness" is simply caused by illegal colors which crap out the transcoder.

  • PSD illustrations don't look 'Crisp/Pin Sharp'?!!!

    Hi there,
I'm building a simple page using illustrations I have designed in illustrator and then saving them as Photoshop PSD buttons.
But I have noticed that when I bring them into Muse they look 'Crisp/Pin Sharp' but as soon as I start scaling them they
go jaggy and start to loose their quality. I have also noticed this when using fonts that Muse converts to an image these also go jaggy.
Then when I veiw in a web browser the illustrations have like a light blur/fuzzyness about them and they are not pin sharp.
I have looked at sites on Adobe Muse Site of the Day and they look lovely and crisp/vibrant, what can I do to make all my imagery
jump off the screen. I can't have to just bring them all in at the correct size do I as what is the point in being able to scale etc!?
I am saving them as large quality files!!!
    Hope you can help!
    Cheers

The scaler used in Muse currently can produce less than optimal results when scaling images, especially downsizing. We reccomend that you scale your images in program they were created with and import the assets at the correct size into Muse.
The next version of Muse will feature an enhanced scaling algorithm that should help with downsizing clarity issues, but the best workflow is always to bring in assets as optimized for your layout as possible.

  • Fonts don't look good in Illustrator like they do in Flash

I have a pretty general question that I've been wondering about for some time now:  for some reason, my text does not look great in Illustrator.  It does not appear smooth and beautifully rendered like it does in flash; instead it looks a bit dull and somewhat pixelated at 100%.  Theoretically, they should both look the same, considering they are both vector-based programs, correct?  Or am I doing something wrong in Illustrator (a viewing setting perhaps) that is preventing my text from looking as smooth as it does in Flash?

Theoretically, they should both look the same, considering they are both vector-based programs, correct?
No. What for? You are confusing preview in AI with the final render for on-screen display in Flash. Think: When you work in a 300dpi doc, is there even a point in trying to get smooth display on a 96dpi computer monitor, when all it means is that in print it wil lagain look different? AI's preview is an approximation transposed to screen space, nothing more. Arguably, it would be possible to antialias it a bit better, but then performance also becomes an issue, and you wouldn't wanna trade interactive feedback for soem smooshed pixels, would you? I certainly wouldn't when even pretty standard illustrations have usually more lines, points and edges than a comparable Flash file. Screen update times could grow exponentially. Likewise, you would not want the AI team to even implement Flash's 7 different antialiasing methods, when 90% of users never would use them and just the opposite, even web designers long for creating better pixel-perfect content without any antialiasing. In addition, this highly optimised code may work on a  web interface at 72dpi, but would go to its knees with 300 dpi and beyond.... It's really two completely different things we are talking about here.

  • Fonts don't look like preview

    Fireworks 8 -- PC
My text looks very unclear after export. However, they look
great in the 4-up preview windows in any of the export formats.
This is with a wide variety of fonts (including basics like
Ariel, Verdana, etc.) and with or without bold, italics, etc. My
font sizes are in the 16 to 30 size range. It also doesn't seem to
matter which anti-alias setting I use.
If I go all the way to 96 font size with anti-alias, then I
    can get clear fonts.
This has happened with every graphic I have created since
buying this application about 1 month ago. For most of that time, I
thought it was either just part of the deal or I didn't know how to
tweak the settings. Then I realized that they looked great in the
preview window with various export formats, so it must be something
    else.

Are you viewing the previews at 100%? As Alex said you can
    also set
Selective Quality for jpegs, which can help preserve text
    quality.

  • Fonts don't look as good (even on an imac)?

Is it just me or do the fonts look worse on snow leopard? I just installed it, and I first noticed it in Mail -- all the text for my mailboxes look a little harder to read. The text rendering just doesn't seem to look as good. Anyone else notice this?
I read some posts about how certain monitors don't report that they are LCD's, and so the font smoothing isn't used. But I am on a 24" imac and it says it is using the LCD font smoothing. It just looks worse.
Anyway it could be my imagination -- I might try to compare them side by side and see for sure.
    Bob

There have been some reports to that, specifically for external (Dell) monitors. I can't vouch for the following, so proceed at your own risk:

  • Fonts don't look the same when published...

why is it when i publish my site to a folder the fonts on some pages do not appear the same as they show in iweb...
    i have 8 pages...
home page looks fine just as in iweb...
the remaining pages have a bolder font and doesn't look nice...
i have checked and double checked every page and all fonts are the same...
    helvetica size 15...
    why is this happening...?
    what can i do...?

In iWeb click on +Help > iWeb Help+. In the pane that opens you'll see a search bar in the upper right corner. Copy & paste the following into it:
If text or a shape gets converted to a graphic
...and hit Enter. That same phrase should appear in the resulting list of +Help Topics+. Double-click it.
Follow the steps outlined under +"To identify items that will be converted to graphics when published:"+
...Do yellow badges appear on the text you're having problems with? If so, your text is being converted to graphics — to view the fonts least likely to be converted, click the Fonts button in the lower-right corner. In the Font panel under Collections, click Web.
On the other hand, if yellow badges don't appear then this may apply:
+"...my text boxes were too small, so a lot of my formatting got messed up when I published the site."+ — Quoted from this old thread:

  • Sub Layers don't look crisp

I'm having difficulty with sub layers. I'm not getting a crisp enough sub layer on my DVD menu's.
What is the best method for creating a sub menu in photoshop?

Here's a plug-in ,designed by Chris Lanke, for Photoshop which I've been using alot lately. In fact, I'll be using it for all my overlays/subs. from now on.
    http://www.videotoolshed.com/?page=links
It's a filter which "smooths" antialiased text before your export out of photoshop. Using the black, blue and green highlight color settings in the inspector you can make those edges look great. I did some work for a documentary that needed palm tree leaves as buttons and it really worked out great.
BTW..this site has alot of cool tools as well.

  • Vector Art Crashes After Effects CS3 Windows 7

    Hi there,
I've noticed that AFX CS3 always crashes when I try to use Vector Art effects on Windows 7.  I'm able to turn on the effect, but when I start painting, it always crashes after a few seconds.  Any idea how to prevent this crash? I love vector art.
    thanks..

Solved this problem on my computer by running After Effects in compatibility mode.
My setup is different than the original post, but hopefully it will help someone else.
Here's my problem and how I fixed it...
    System: Windows Vista
    After Effects CS4
    Vector Paint
After drawing a a third small line, AfterFX would lock up and the screen would go semi transparent. Turning Open GL settings didn't help.
Closed AfterFX, and righ-clicked on the After Effects shortcut.  Chose Properties->Shortcut tab->Compatibility->Checked "Run this program in compatibily mode for "Windows XP (Service Pack 2).
    All other settings left unchecked.
    Hit OK.
Relaunch AfterFX and the Vector Paint effect works great now!

  • Source video determines rendering quality of vector art / type / fonts

I use the same export settings (template) for my webmovies. In this case 400x224 with WMV9 codec.
Why does the background source video determine the final quality of the vector art and type that is rendered thru this template?
The output resolution is always 400x224, but eg. JVC HDV camera images and Kodak HDV camera images generate completely different type and vecotr art after rendering thru the same settings?
I would say, it is vector art, so it will render nice and smooth on any resolution, whatever the background image is. Any help and hints will be appreciated!

Thank you for you're relpy and help Hunt. I appreciate and understand you're hint.
Though it is still weird for me that the 'bad' way PrPro renderes vector art (images and type) differs when different background footage is used.
The render quality of type and vector art is completely different with different background footage. This means my customer will get ugly type and logo's on webmovies with footage from camera X, and smooth type and vector art with footage from camera Y. Both with the same final dimensions after rendering thru the same set of settings.

So what?  The second-hand shop you bought it from didn't follow the right procedures.  You also didn't follow the right procedures to make sure that iPhone was not in Activation Lock.  It's like buying a car for cash but not getting the title signed over to you.  It's not your car if you don' have the title.  And that's not legally your iPhone if the previous owner's Apple ID is still registered to the device for Find My iPhone/Activation Lock.
Only a proof of purchase from the ORIGINAL retail store would do any good at all.  Return the device to where you bought it and demand your money back.  If they refuse, either get a lawyer and/or turn in the device to local police.  If you're in possession of stolen property, then the cops won't care about where you got it from.

  • Jagged edges on vector art and fonts on R1900 using AI CS5 in OSX

    OS 10.6.4 (Mac Pro 2x2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 12GB ram 1066 MHz DDR3)
Problem with the R1900 Printer and AI CS5
I have been using the same printer with CS4 without any trouble whatsoever for at least 5yrs. Beautiful quality prints without so much as itch and great color control...
In October I finally made the switch to CS5 and my printing capability goes to hell.
Quality printing straight from AI to a non-postcript inkjet printer such as the R1900 doesn't seem to be an option anymore...
I get jagged edges on vector art and fonts. I do graphic arts/logos/prints and this is a huge issue...!
Apparently I have to save my AI files as PDFs and print from there, but this poses extra steps, troubles in sizing, colors, page set up...
I mean nothing beats being able to print direct from AI... I cannot understand what the problem is all of a sudden.
At home I have a late '06 Mac Pro running CS4 and printing successfully to a C88 epson inkjet printer under OSX 10.5
What is the matter, please help, this is cramping my style and performance???
    thank you

Ok this would not be a problem with 10.4.11 on a Power PV Mac but on an Intel Mac running 10.6.4 or running anything above 10.4.11 on any Mac you would need a postscript driver. Problem, there is no postscript driver for this model Printer this is actually a photo quality printer, that is what it does best.
So what to do the best one can do is to save the file as a pdf and print from Acrobat. There is no other way regardless of what one would like and expect.

  • Vector Art Question

I have two vector art images that need to be composited in a simple After Effects comp. One is a backround plate and the other is a vector of a person. The person slide in and the backround will go out of focus with text on top.
I did a mock up and the backround plate looks flat as it should. The backround plate is complicated but it does not any texture to it, all solid colors. I am looking for any tricks that can be done in Photoshop to give it a bit more dimension. I know their are alot of extrusion and 3D filters in Photoshop but I that experienced working with vector art.
Been searching tutorials but I probably am not searching the right things. I would like to give this backround plate some pop.
    Thanks.

This is very helpful and I can use this to get some of the affects that I want. I was not searching the right terms and I do not work with vector art that often.
I still have an issue with the background plate that I am using. The small animation actually mimics a cinematic dolly shot with a rack focus at the end.
I am just "dollying" on the background plate and it reveals an image in the foreground and the plate goes out of focus just as if I were to shoot it for real.
The background vector art just has such a flat look that was looking for something that could almost give it a bit of depth.
    Thanks, the tutorial is perfect.

  • Exporting to PDF - How Can I Get A Small File Size When Using Lots of Vector Art?

I am trying to create a small PDF file for e-book distribution purposes. My Indesign pages contain a variety of photographs, vector icons and vector maps.
A publisher in Britain who does similar books on a Mac using Creative Suite was able to create a 22-page document very similar to mine (similar icons, graphics, density, etc) that is only 2.84 mb, a small fraction of the file size that I'm getting! I've included a sample page of his below, which is a low-res jpeg, but on the original PDF all of the text and images (except the jpeg cliff background) are super sharp - they look like vectors when you zoom in. I've also included screenshots of his PDF export settings.
I don't know if he's exporting directly out of Indesign, but my best guess is that he is.
My vector-based icons, numbers and maps are bloating my PDFs considerably. When I remove them, the Indesign and exported PDF file sizes drop dramatically. For the life of me, I can't figure out how he got such small PDF files sizes using so much vector art! The PDF graphic compression settings don't seem to include any options for vector art.
My vector art graphics (numbering, icons, maps) are all saved as Illustrator AI files and then placed in Indesign as linked graphics. My best guess as to why I can't achieve smaller PDF files is I'm either doing something wrong with the vector graphics themselves or handling/exporting them improperly out of Indesign.
I am using CS4 for PC and am on a Dell Machine running Windows 7.

  • Can i reshape a vector art in AfterEffects CS4?

I created a vector art in illustrator which i then imported into After Effects CS4 and applied the write on effect on it. As the write on effect is happening i want part of my vector art to reshape into a different image (vector art). Is that possible? I am using the word "reshape" for the transformation of the image, i'm not sure if that is correct.
I am working on a mac book pro with Mac OS X 10.6.8

Your challenge is you want to take that shape and have it animate into another shape? I would use mask, via double click that shape traced out using a mask. Thereby launching the second window (Layer window) to then see the drop drowm menu assigning your mask to that mask after enabling animate path icon in T.line. This way second mask is not started rather it will now animate to your second shape. Don't forget to move your cursor down the TL before you draw your second shape.
If you are trying to animate your asset into a another asset, see transition effects to browse in bridge for a suitable transition.
If all of this is greek to you. See this tutorial http://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/using/animating-shape-paths-masks.html

  • Exporting Flash vector art for print

I would like to export art created in Flash as a vector
format for print. Exporting as either AI or EPS from Flash seems to
have many limitations: no support for masks, alpha transparency, or
editable text with fonts embedded. Has anyone found a workflow to
create print-ready vector art using Flash?
I have tried many combinations of Flash, Freehand, and
Illustrator with no success. (Freehand will open SWF files, but it
rasterizes the vector art when exporting as either EPS or PDF).
Working in Flash Pro 8, but from the Flash CS3 documentation
it doesn't look like there are additional options for file export.
Is it true that any vector art exported from Flash loses font info,
    masking, and transparency?

Has anyone found a good solution for this? I need to export character art from Flash to use for print and consumer product items. Qualtity vectors are required.
The "best" solution I've found so far is to "Print" as either a .PDF or .PS file, then open that file in Illustrator. It expands all the gradients, and creates very complex vectors, but it's better than the standard export to .AI function, which gives offending operator "bg" errors. Still, it is a sub-par result, and I end up having to recreate art anyway.
    (I'm using Flash CS4.)
Dear Adobe, this should be a no-brainer ... Please introduce a true vector export feature from Flash to Illustrator that generates art we can actually use.
