Vector graphics import, labelling dilema

I'm using Framemaker 10, Autodesk Illustrator Publisher, Inkscape, Windows Vista.
I have imported some CAD illustrations from Autodesk Illustrator into Illustrator Publisher. There I have labelled them.
I have then saved/published them as .svg files.
If I import them directly in to Framemaker, they open with the callouts at a strange angle and 3/4 of the picture missing. Therefore I have to open them in Inkscape, bring the whole picture in to frame and line up the callouts.
Now I import them into Framemaker. The trouble is, the numbering is difficult to predict. The labelling/callouts/numbering always turns what looks to be bold. But the real problem is resizing the illustrations. Because there is no way of predicting the size of the output from Publisher, the illustrations have to be resized in Framemaker. This would be no problem usually as the illustrations are svg (vector graphics) but of course it resizes the labelling/callouts/numbering which makes it look really daft when I have 10 illustrations all with different sized fonts.
What do people in here do? Does anyone else use Vector graphics in their manuals.
I would really appreciate some response on this as I feel I've hit a brick wall here.

Why not label them in Frame? We do, and it has advantages beyond avoiding text rendering and scaling issues, such as being able to re-use the same illustration for multiple purposes with different callouts. We use embedded callouts in our service manuals (the XML engine requires it), and depopulate the callouts (usually just switching off one layer) for re-use of that art in the Frame manuals.

Let me admit that I have no experience with SVG, due to lack of SVG support across all of our workflow, but we use vector EPS extensively.

If SVG has preview/thumbnail embedded images, is there a chance that this is just a preview problem? What happens at print or render to PDF?

This is one of the downsides of embedded callouts. If the images cannot be pre-sized, either the text will scale arbitrarily, which is ugly, or it won't scale, which is a disaster. More bad news - your stroke weights are scaling too.

I would junk any image editor, vector or raster, that didn't provide that basic level of output control.

Yes, sourced from Pro-E, AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, Frame and extractions from supplier PDFs of unknown origination. We clean them up in Adobe Illustrator, using specific dimensional extents, and a stroke weight that's acceptable for a limited range of up and down scalings. Callouts are added in Frame, using a self-masking arrow, and a self-masking bubble with a grouped text frame and a paragraph format specific to callout use.

Working with labelled vector graphics (CS4)

I've working with a rather large set of simple geometric vectors.
They've all been created in illustrator, but need to be scaled in InDesign and flow with the text.
The only method I've come up with is somewaht convoluted, so I thought I'd share and see if anyone had any suggestions on how I might improve the workflow.
- vector graphic is pasted (not placed) into InDesign and ungrouped
- strokes are converted (manually) to object styles (graphic styles created in illustrator are lost)
- graphis is regrouped and roughly scaled
- labels are added and paragraph styles applied
- labels are grouped with graphic, cut, and "paste into" anched text box
- re-scaling and label edits are done with select content/container/next object
More complicated graphics will be linked and rescaled in illustrator and relabelled and placed as above.
Is there a better/easier way to do this?
(Maybe CS5 will have a container isolation mode...)

I want to keep the labels out of illustrator, but there are a few graphics with more detail that percentage scaling is the way to go.
It would be far easier if InDesign would respect (i.e. import, map) Illustrator's graphic styles.

How do I import vector graphics from Photoshop or
Illustrator? I've tried importing ai files but I get empty paths,
even if they were originally filled. Can anyone recommend a good
tut for this? Im using Flash MX.

After Effects is warping my imported vector graphics from Illustrator

I was given an Illustrator vector to import into After Effects. But whenever I import the graphic into a composition it quite literally squishes the image and changes the colours of the graphic slightly.
I have a feeling that it is not after effects that is creating the problem, but with the illustrator file itself.
Does anyone know any options in Illustrator that would alter the file to cause this problem? Or why it is behaving like this?
I also asked the same question in an After Effects forum to see if it is a different problem.

It would be done by the Adobe Captivate team modifying Captivate so as to allow it to happen.
In other words, there isn't a way to do this presently. You might consider submitting a Feature Request so as to put it on their radar for a future release. (Link to the form is in my sig)

Loading vector graphics at runtime

Hi,
I'd like to know if there is any way or any vector graphic file format that i can load dynamically at runtime on a web-based flash application.
I have some files in pdf that i want to load in and i can convert them to jpgs at runtime and load the jpgs but then i lose vector graphics so when i zoom in and out they become pixelated.
I had a look a look at flashpaper to convert pdf to swf and load them in but i can't see anywhere in the documentation about converting the pdf's at runtime rather than manually dragging and dropping them in.
So far i've looked at pdf, svg and .ai but none of these can be loaded at run time just imported into the .FLA
So can this be done? Or alternatively is there an application that can do the pdf -> swf conversion from the commandline then i could trigger php to do the conversion at runtime.

Replacing bitmap text with vector graphic text

In a layout for an ebook I have some important black and white bitmap illustrations in tiff., 300 dpi. These have appeared ok on print, but on screen, reading the same pdf-file, they´re unacceptable, especially some texts in fontsize 5-6 pt are unclear. People tell me I have to convert the drawings, or at least the texts, to vector graphics.
Question: Can I open these tiff.s in Photoshop, change only the texts to vector graphics and then save in a format, that can be inserted in the Word2010 layout? (You might wonder why I use Word, but it was a question of economy, when the project was started up). Or are there other ways? Thanks for any answers!

You are right, there are no layers, some geometric shapes with texts in and around. It´s possible to mark or lassoe the bits of text, since spaces were made in the figures for the texts. And then delete them, and then insert new ones. That will be in another layer, I guess, but from that point I don´t know what to do :-)

Reduce file size vector graphics

When it comes to imported vector graphics are there any methods to decrease the swf's file size as much as possible?
So far I have:
- imported an illustrator ai file (strokes 'expanded' in illustrator and unneeded swatches/brushes etc. deleted and with no raster images embedded)
- exported the file in illustrator as swf and imported that swf into flash
- imported ai file and breaking it down to flash shapes
- optimized those shapes as much as possible
I rather use vector as much as possible. For a banner for examle, I've imported vector images of trees. I couldn't get it below 40 kb so I exported all illustrator files to png files which helped. Can detailed vector images be optimized just as much? Or is it better to use bitmap files when it comes to more detailed graphics? Does it matter if it is a vector images made in flash or a imported vector file even if both have the same number of paths?
Any other ideas I might try besides the things I've already tried?

There is a certain threshold when a bitmap can actually be smaller than a detailed vector graphic. Especially when working on small image sizes, bitmaps can often be quite smaller.
For a vector graphic, you can't do more than reducing the number of vertexes which may result in a poorer graphic.
With bitmaps, you can do a lot more:
Keep in mind that bitmaps with an alpha channel use up much more memory than bitmaps without alpha information. So try to reach your goal without using transparent bitmaps - which seems hard in the beginning, but as Flash provides different blending modes, you can, for example use the blending mode "multiply" for a black logo on a white background with just a grayscale bitmap instead of a bitmap with alpha channel information.
The same is valid for a white logo on a black background: Use the "add" blending mode instead, then.
I have also written some Photoshop Plugins to reduce the alpha-channel bit-resolution which sometimes gives me the extra 3-4kb I needed. Instead of using 256 shades of alpha, it reduces them to maybe 8 or 16. Alpha-Channels are comressed like GIF/PNG images inside of flash, so having as few different shades of alpha as possible will make images smaller. I even use dithering sometimes for softer alpha areas.
In some rare cases, you can also gain some bytes if you convert text to vector graphics (pressing CTRL-B twice), but this only works when there's not much text at all. That's because the metric information for text glyphs take up a bit more space then just the shapes. So you can imagine that this may only work if there is just one text element with all different letters. So you won't get much size reduction by converting "abracadabra". But you will get some reduction if you convert "the quick brown fox jumps" into shapes.
This all can help if you have restrictions like 30kb or even 20kb to create a full animated flash banner.

Reuse embedded vector graphics

I wan to reuse embedded vector graphics from FM documents in MS Office and OpenOffice.
I found the Linux tool mif2xfig which works only for MIF 4.0.

What vector graphics formats do those apps support?
There have been at least 2 FrameScript or plug-in tools for exporting FM graphics discussed here over the years, but the only one for which I found a link, the link was stale.
For small numbers of such embeds, I normally open the PDF page in Illustrator, and delete all the page content except the image elements of interest. Save as EPS, PDF or SVG, depending on target app support for vector imports.
Acrobat Pro has the ability to export all images in a PDF, but as of 9.0, only to raster format. We have XI, but I haven't checked to see if that feature's been enhanced.

Why do vector graphics appear pixelated when zoomed in, isn't fireworks meant to support vectors?

I am new to using Fireworks, but I thought it would be great since it has both vector and bitmap support. However, when I work with vector tools and a vector image I imported from Illustrator, if I zoom into the image, it appears as though it's a bitmap. Also, if I were to resize the image down 25% and then bring it back up to a size similar to what it was at, it will look distorted and the quality will have changed? Why is this? I do this in Illustrator with no such results. I thought vectors should be able to be resized up, down, or up and down and they should look relatively the same. Any ideas, what is going on?

You see how the starting image looks VERY different from the image after the resize. why?!?!?!?!?!??!?

Vector graphic export?

How can I move vector graphics from Keynote to other applications (like Adobe Illustrator) using the new version? I had no problem in Keynote 5. I really like using Keynote to make images and if I can't figure it out I will have to switch over to Illustrator full time...

You answer seems inappropriate to me, and I hope to many others.
Then your using the wrong software. If your need is to create vector drawings then if you have Keynote version 5.3 use that, it is compatible with OS 10.6 Snow Leopard through to OS 10.10 Yosemite, alternatively use a dedicated vector drawing application, there are many to choose from, two are mentioned in this discussion.
It is so frustrating to see that the V6, that uses natively vectors shape, cannot export them by a simple cut and paste.
Keynote does not have this feature, use an appropriate application that meets your needs.
removing this feature is a true handicap for Keynote.
The purpose of Keynote version 6 is to; "create and deliver beautiful presentations", so states the Apple Keynote webpage.
Keynote is not disadvantaged in the least when creating presentations by the lack of exporting vector drawings.
Why would profesional designers use or promote Keynote if this software is no longer able to properly interact with other design tools?
Probably because it does in fact work very well with respected professional tools, it can import media from Photoshop, Illustrator, Word, Numbers, Excel, Indesign, Final Cut Pro, Garageband, Protools ..............

Problems postscript: vector graphics to FlexRip

Hi guys, I have a very serious problem in my company often happens that generating a postcript with illustrator and passing through the dispatcher FlexRip Vers 12 (Esko), cause problems on the edges of the letters, vector graphics or parts of graphics, as if they were made hacksaw. PDF instead of going through this does not happen the problem is that for our needs we must use the postcript.
This occurs sometimes in relatively simple work and very important this problem is totally random in different points, I use Illustrator CS6.

Flash mx 2004 vector graphics

When I try to import the svgz file that I created in
Indesign, Flash MX 2004 says that it does not recognize the file
type. I thought Flash used vector graphics for it's images.

Yes it does but it doesn't mean it can understand every
single format they are delivered in.
Try something more common like AI.

After Effects must convert imported vector graphics to bitmap (raster) graphics. By default, this conversion (called "rasterization") happens once for a layer, and it happens before transformations, like scaling. This means that scaling such a layer up is really scaling a bitmap image, and that can expose jagged pixelation.
You can tell After Effects to rasterize after transformations like scaling, and to do so once per frame, to ensure that each frame is as crisp as possible. Just click the Continuously Rasterize switch for the layer.
This is only an issue for imported vector graphics (from Illustrator, SWF, EPS, and PDF files). Vector graphics created in After Effects, like text and shape layers, are always continuously rasterized.

I'm going to answer my own question and then ask another.... Why?
When I open just one PDF document it look great. but when i open two, the second
document always has this fuzziness to the edges. Doesnt matter which documents I open
This is a close up of two documents opened and the windows placed over each other. As hopefully you can see
in this screen capture, the one on the right has a furry edge and looks quite rough. Its the document opened second.
Any ideas?
