Vector logo to web graphic- which way?

Hello,
I am designing a web page in Illustrator and will be slicing the images. I have a fairly simple vector logo, no more than 128 colors needed.
My question is if I should:
a) convert the logo to a different format (gif or png) and then place it in my template and then slice and save for web, and if so, which file format in "save for web" would be best?
or
b) place the vector logo as is into my template and then slice and save for web- again, which file format would be best to save as?
Or perhaps there is another option I haven't considered? Any tips for keeping the logo sharp?

.svg has never been greatly supported and requires the user to install a plug in to see it. It's really not wise to use SVG for general web graphics.
PNG is not greatly supported in IE6, especially PNG24. IE6 does still comprise about 20% of web users unfortunately.
PNG8 or GIF would be best if you need transparency. Without transparency, JPG may also be appropriate. Which one you use depends greatly on the logo and the resulting file size (kb) and appearance. There is no hard and fast rule as to which format to use.
As for the template... it really makes no difference how you do it. Just follow whatever path seems to work well for you.

I guess you should go by the sizing guide and also taking into consideration of what is affordable and to achieve maximum efficiency.
The word "good" can be very misleading and might end up having a oversized box.
1. Come up with a high level details of the volume of messages that the system will process.
2. Use Sizing guide
3. What's the criticality of the interfaces that will run on the XI system ? Use Availablity guide to determine how best you can come up with highly available system landscape if required.
I think answering these question will help you to arrive at a valid answer.

Which way of VS 2008 do you use for connecting WebServices in WebAS 7.0?

I have tried a/b and constantly fail with message errors as "Unrecognized message version."
Important: I do ask about WebAs 7.x SPS 14 or later - the version with SOAMANAGER - my old WebServices before the changes in SPS 14 did work.

I have a Macbook (2006) and a MBP (June 2007) sitting here with all the logos on the keys. Not missing here. I have a new MBP (October 2008) also sitting here, no logos on the keys.

and yes, I DID try again just now and proved that it has been removed from the hardware by looking at the keyboard viewer while holding down the function key.
I have no idea what hardware you're looking at... works fine here. You didn't actually test to see what happens when you hit the key, then?

New Mac Pro Graphics Cards - Which way to go???

Hi Everyone,
Just looking at placing an order today for a new Mac Pro and have been considering it since they came out earlier this month. With the new graphics card availabilities I am kind of at a loss with which way to go and wanted to see what the opinion of the group would be. They offer the possibility of having multiple cards if you go with the low end ATI 2600 (256mb) then one can have up to eight displays. Or do I go with the slightly larger NVidia 8800 (500mb) which probably offers better overall performance. There is no notation stating that one can stack the NVidia card the same way as the ATI and I don't think I feel like dropping an extra almost $3000 on the highest end card offered so I am stuck trying to decide. I work primarily in video and photo work so the idea of multiple displays is appealing but not if there is a lack of overall performance. Using Motion a lot I find the graphics card is really crucial to render times, especially when using the motion blur within the project.
Any advice or considerations to be thought about would be greatly appreciated.

All the paths to CFCs are the same in my live production site. Can you be more specific as to what you mean by "RemoteClass aliases in your AS Classes and CFCs (if any) are correct."? How will the app know that the CFC is on http://myLiveSite.com instead of http://myDevSite.com? The only line of code that I have noticed that points to a URL is the endpoint in a file called _Super_XXX.as. And at the top of that file it says that the file is not meant for editting.
To clarify...I see your app/code all exists on a server access via a web browser so I can understand that everything still works when deployed. Mine is a mobile app so when I am developing and testing on my local computer the URL points to my local development machine. However when I deploy it to a mobile device like a tablet and run the app, it needs to be able to access a cfc on a remote server via a different URL ie. my http://myLiveSite.com/myCFC.cfc instead of http://localhost/myCFC.cfc

Is Fw really better for web graphics?

Ok, so I've downloaded the Fw trial to see how it's better
for web graphics than Photoshop. With Photoshop the usual problem
is that I have to mess around to turn on/off layers, copy parts of
images into new images to export transparent logos, tabs etc. so I
hoped that Fw have some intelligent slice system for one step
exports. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find it. Maybe I'm
wrong but it seems to me that Fw has a very primitive flat slicing
system, no overlapping is possible. So for a very basic example if
I have a background graphics on the top of the page that I want to
export (not the entire page) and a logo *on* it that I want to
export as a transparent png or maybe just as a jpg including the
background, it's impossible, because the logo slice will divide the
page into rectangles no matter what. I don't care about
HTML/CSS/whatever I just want to export overlapping graphic parts
in one simple step by properly defined slices. Looks like I
couldn't find the one step solution I hoped for in Fw. Am I missing
something?

In a word. Yes. It's designed to work with screen graphics,
and handles
both vector and bitmaps well at the same time. It's got quite
a few
more web-centric workflows than Photoshop.
Fireworks CS3 supports multiple pages. Each page supports
it's own web
layer, so you have much more control over slices and can
avoid the
problems of overlapping slices this way.
Overlapping slices don't work because it's impossible for FW
to
determine which one is the most important - and should be
sliced in whole

I'm not clear on what you're trying to do here as you seemed
to have
left some information out. Assuming you want a repeating
background
image and as separate slice for the logo.
Draw a slice that covers the width of your background, by
however many
pixels tall you need. Either lower on the page or on a
separate page
plave the logo and slice it as well. As you are not concerned
about the
html or CSS it's pretty straightforward from there. Just
export the
slices, and tell FW not to include unsliced areas. In your
html, set you
background image as a background image and your logo either
as an inline
image or as a background image within another containing div.

Sending vector logo to client as one flat layer??

AI newbie here. How do you send the client a vector logo? When I save my logo as EPS, it is still in a thousand pieces. Is it possible to "Flatten" logo like in Photoshop before sending as vector?
My logo has some transparency which I'd like to keep.
How do you send a scalable vector logo that has transparency in a way that a client can easily open and view the file?

To elaborate on what Laary wrote which is the correct answer.
AI format is not readable by any other application except Illustrator at least as a graphic.
What makes Illustrator usable in other applications is its pdf compatibilty, which is an option when saving the file.
It essentially saves two versions of the file one in the ai format and the other in the pdf format it is the pdf portion of the file that you see when placing the file.
If you wish to have the file flat as you refer to it then when saving as a pdf uncheck the option in the pdf dialog Create Acrobat Layers from Top Level Layers.
Also when you flatten a file in Illustrator it is not the same thing as flattening a file in Photoshop

Can Linked vector logos be used in CC Libraries across invited team members?
Working in a team of five designers, we currently use libraries to consolidate our many logos for multiple brands.
It would be great to utilise the CC Libraries now available in Indesign to maintain consistency across applications, however after trying, it seems linked vector files placed into a new CC Library are not linking when shared with my colleagues.
I have tried linking logos from both our internal server and my desktop and then creating a new CC Library, either way, when opened from an invited user, the logo has no link.
Only recreating a logo as an Indesign graphic will the logo populate across invited users. i,e copying and paste from illustrator to Indesign, then insert the recreated logo into a CC Library. This isn't ideal especially with the amount of logos we use.
Alternatively, adding a logo into a CC Library from Illustrator, the logo is an imbedded file when placed into Indesign. Unsure how these files will behave when sending artwork to print. Again, this isn't ideal, opening every logo in Illustrator to add to a CC Library would be fairly time consuming given the quantity we deal with.
Does anyone have any thoughts or share the similar views on this?

@Designer1976 – if you place an AI logo in InDesign and move that placed logo to a CC Library, it should behave like any other image you move to a CC Library. Other people who have access to your CC Library could place the logo, print it, export to PDF, if the file is available on a mutual network drive or a cloud drive like Dropbox etc. And of course, if the loaded file is synched which can take a moment, if you just moved it to a remote drive in the cloud.
I tested this with eps file types.
AI files (PDFs with AI code embedded) placed in InDesign should make no difference.
However:
1. If I placed an eps file in InDesign
2. Moved the eps file to my Dropbox account
3. Came back to InDesign
4. Relinked the placed eps with the one in my Dropbox
(all good now in the perspective of an InDesign document)
I was not able to add that relinked eps file to my CC Library.
By trying I only heard a "blip" or so. And nothing was added.
To make it work, I first had to:
1. Save the InDesign document
2. Close the document (maybe optional, can't remember)
3. Reopen the document (maybe optional, can't remember)
Then I could add the placed eps to my CC Library.
After that it worked like it should.
Not as seamless as it should be…

I am a hard core web graphics designer and have worked
extensively in designing websites and web applications using CSS
and HTML. I have also created interactive presentations in Flash
but to the basic navigation level and not advance action scripting.
I do not have much knowledge in programming.
I would want to know how Flex works for web graphics
designers? What capabilities I will have to build into myself so
that I will be able to work on Flex and also propose solutions
while discussing with clients and developers?
It will be great help if any of you can guide me to become
and expert with Flex?

The reason for getting into Flex is: I feel it is related to
Flash and its really been a long time since i was deciding to get
into some programming (especially actionscripting). After
introduction of Flex, i thought it will be good to learn Flex as an
upcoming medium in creating RIAs by using actionscripting. In a way
I will get a chance to clear my fundamentals of programming which I
am looking forward to as the first step to learn the logic of
programming. Correct me if I'm worng.
I am open to doing courses also if needed. Please help me in
that.

You can see your photos on any device using your ID and photo stream.
If you want to see them in a web browser you need to create a shared photo stream album and make it public.

Not sure which way to go for transfer.....

First; let me say that I did search for the answer to this, but I'm not sure which way to go with a lot of the answers. I'm sorry I'm asking this question for the umpteenth time. Yes; I'm one of those that understands enough about computers to make me dangerous...
Our computers are set up on a home network. Before I got my iPod last year, we ripped all our CDs and saved them on a completely separate external drive named "M" (for music), so all 3 computers could have access to the information on the M drive.
I get my pod & have the office computer set up to be the 'main' iTunes location, since we purchased a USB2 hub for it. I quickly learned how to direct iTunes to 'pull' the music from the M file & understand how all that works. Life is good. I even took the time to put an album art file on the M drive & insterted everything into iTunes by 'hand'.
Bless my hubby's heart. Completely filled with computer envy, he just purchased me a brand spanking new shiney computer. Needless to say, with all these new bells and whistles, I can now use my computer as the 'home base' for all things iPod/iTunes instead of having to go downstairs to do updates, etc.
I looked up & printed out "How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer" from the Apple web site, which basically says to download everything onto my iPod's harddrive & do the transfer on the new machine.
I think what I'm trying to ask, is since all the music is located on an external drive:
When I download iTunes to iPod harddrive, are all the tags still in place? Will all the album art be correct, so when I download it onto the new computer, everything will be identical to what's on the old computer?

Is there another trick I can do to have everthing the same on the new computer?
--or--
Am I better off just having my computer go to the M drive & upload all the music onto my new computer & reload all the album art by hand again?
My real hesitation on this method is I have a lot of things on the M drive that I changed the tags on in iTunes, & I would really hate to go & search through everything again & redo what tags I can find wrong.
I know that this may sound like a lot of trivial questions, but with over 6,000 tracks, I'd really like the process to go as smoothly as possible.
And once again; I'm sorry if this seems like just another 'how do I transfer' question. As I was reading the search results, I didn't notice anything that dealt with external drives being involved & I don't know if any of that makes a differance or not in all of this.

Why does Firefox no longer display .php suffix web pages which are in my Mac?

I have a question about Firefox 14.0.1 displaying .php suffix web page files which are in a Mac running Mountain Lion OS 10.8. In eaarlier versions of Mac OS, for example 10.4.7, I was able to see properly displayed web page files with .html and .php suffixes when those web page files were in my computer. I refer to seeing the page as it should properly display, not seeing the source code. If a page had a .php suffix, the browser displayed the page properly although any php scripts embedded in that page were ignored.
Apple occasionallly updated its OS and browser makers occasionally updated browsers. One day, I noticed that Safari no longer displayed web page files in my Mac if those pages had a .php suffix. However, Firefox and other browsers continued to display web page files with .php suffixes although the embedded php scripts were ignored.
Now, I have Mountain Lion in iMac.
I can no longer see .php suffix web page files in my computer regarless of the browser I use. No browser displays those pages.
A .php suffix web page file which Firefox and other browsers display in 10.4.7 does not display in 10.8 if that web page file is in the computer.
In my computer, I have html and php suffix web page files I want to see using a browser. The files I want to see and the browser both are in my computer. Html files display perfectly with one exception: if php scripts are embedded in the html files, the scripts are ignored. A file the name of which ends with ".php" will not be displayed regardless of whether there is a php script in the file. Safari displays the source code only. Chrome does not display the file at all. Firefox and SeaMonkey, which displayed .php suffix web page files in earlier versions of the Mac OSm now respond to such pages by providing a dialog box which seems to assume that the file is about to be downloaded from the Internet. The dialog box asks me if I want to use the browser to open the file or if I want to save it to disk. The file is on the disk at the time, and the computer is disconnected from the Internet. I click that I want to use the browser to open the file. Then the dialong box reopens with the same question. This happens over and over. I never get to see a web page file in my computer the name of which ends with ".php". With Firefox 14.0.1, I can see .php suffix web pages which are on the Internet or in a 10.4.7 Mac but not in a 10.8 Mac. Did I miconfigure Firefox? It seems unlikely that Firefox lost the ability to display pages in Mac OS 10.8 which it displays in `10.4.7. How can I solve this web page display problem?

Haroon mentions two solutions. I used the easier one, which is to start the Apache webserver already in Mountain Lion and to enable the php already in Mountain Lion. It worked. I see the file correctly displayed with html, css, and php. I see the page by using Firefox. I enter an address in the address bar. For example, the address might be "localhost/example/example.php". I cannot see the page by using Firefox's "Open File ..." menu option or by dragging the file's icon onto Firefox's icon. I tried using your solution also but was unable to find the specific preference to modify. I found the page of preferences which may be modified but I could not find the one I need. I found a list of descriptions of the preferences at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_:_FAQs_:_About:config_Entries
but I could not find the specific preference which I need.
By the way, to enable loading the php module, one uncomments a line of code by deleting the initial "#" character, and one does that by pressing control key and "P" key while the cursor is over the "#" character.
Also by the way, when I use Firefox or Safari to look at the Apache web directory in which my files are, the files are listed case sensitively. For example, the files are listed: Ace, Zygote, bar. This is because lower case follows upper case. THis annoys me. I prefer case insensitive listing. When I llok directly athe directory without using a browser, the files are listed case insensitively. For example, they are listed: Ace, bar, Zygote. I guess taht Apache is doing this.

General Question - In which way should I store a "UTILS" class

In which way should i store them , a Static class with static methods or an Instance of that class that will be stored in Application scope, or some other way of storing this class and accessing it?

Utility methods? Just use a final class with a private constructor and only static methods for that.

Web graphics / images display in low resolution on any web browser

Hi everyone.
This issue has had me stumped for a few months now. I never noticed this issue with Snow Leopard but now with Lion I have noticed that web graphics display at a significantly lower resolution. I switch between Google Chrome and Safari and the issue is present on both browsers.
Basically any website with graphics, or images will be pixelated and lacking in fine detail. It is painfully obvious when browsing sites like Flickr and 500px. In these cases, my own personal images look terrible online, but look absolutely normal in my Lightroom library, so I know it's not a strange display issue on my Mac.
I'm just curious if anyone has had a similar issue, and if you have figured out how to resolve it.

i have the same issue with safari on my mac. i'm not sure if i have snow leopard or not. all i know is i am on a G4 with mac os 10.5.8 and have safari 5.0.1. last week, i could not watch certain video clips online, because {as it stated in my browser where the video should be} i did not have the most recent flash player. but when i went to download the most recent version, it told me it would not work on a power pc mac. so i researched and found out i had to use the flash 10.1.102.64 player... it's the most recent version that will work on a power pc mac. so i uninstalled the flash player i had on my mac and installed this player. all well and good... now i can see the videos.
but what's not well and good is that i no longer have hi-res images in my browser. all images are pixelated and unclear. i posted on the adobe forum to see if i could get an answer as to why.
here was my post/inquiry...
"I recently upgraded my Flash Player so that I could view internet content (such as videos) that were not available to me before I upgraded. Ever since, the images on most web sites that I visit are now pixelated (look very low-resolution). I had not made any other changes to any settings on my computer or software. The browser I use is Safari 5.0.1. I had to upgrade to the Flash Player 10.1.102.64 because I am on a PowerPC Mac G4, and that is the most recent version of Flash Player that will work with Power PCs.
Anyway, now that I have upgraded (which included first uninstalling the old Flash Player), my images look pixelated... most do, anyway. For some reason images I post to flickr appear okay on screen. But normal 72dpi images on standard web sites (like Yahoo) appear very lo-res.
Does this have to do with whether or not my Mac's operating system is 64-bit or 32-bit... or the Safari software... in relation to the Flash Player's... whether or not they are compatible? If not, I have no idea why this would have changed since upgrading my Flash Player. And if so, what can I do to get around it? I'm somewhat computer savvy... but not this much. Can someone please help me so that I don't have to pay $39 to call Support and ask them?"
