"Vector mapped" layer in an open PS file?

A client has asked me to send a file with the type on a separate layer which he refers to as "vector mapped". I know that I can lay in an AI type layer and save the file as an open .PSD file, or lay it in as a vector smart object and send it as an open TIFF file (along with the original AI file), but the client is using CS2 and can't deal with VSOs. The way around it, of course, is via a layered AI file with a placed image, but what is he referring to with hte term "vector map"?

Mike, thanks for taking a look. I still have a problem with it. "the unflattened AI or PS file with live type" doesn't work for me in PS, as a .PSD file. The type always winds up rasterized. Does the term "Live type" mean something in particular? I can't use a vector SO because the client is using CS2. In the end, what worked (I think) is a 2-layer AI file with a placed image. I sent him 9 different versions, 4 PS, saved as .PSD files, and 5 AI versions, a couple of which worked. None of the PS files worked. Unless the term "Live type" actually refers to some accessible tool in the apps, I see no way to save a PS file with a copied-and pasted type layer that will remain a vector layer after the file is saved. What am I missing?
(Later) I figured out what I was missing. I was able to get Illustrator type into a .PSD file as a layer, leave it there, close the file with the layers unflattened, then reopen it and edit the still-vector type layer. It stayed in vector mode. I did it using two maneuvers no one on the forum has mentioned so far.

Hello. I've just downloaded ReaderX from Adobe website. Rebooted. Now when I try to start Reader, the message box with title "Adobe Reader:AcroRd32.exe - Application Error", and the message box contents are "Could not open a file mapping". Reader window does not even show. When I click OK, the program terminates.
What can I do to fix this error?
I have a Windows 7 x64 installed.
Update: Uninstalled, rebooted once again, reinstalled reader, now all works. Thread can be closed.
Update2: After a hour of successful usage, I closed the Reader and then tried to open it again. Same problem with "Could not open a file mapping". Any suggestions?

Repair via ARP is go to Add Remove Programs and select Adobe Reader, You will find two options highlighted one is repair and other is remove.
From there you can Click on repair and click on next. It will repair your Reader install if there is some file missing.

What are my options for opening EPS files in Elements 13? What is the best way to convert these to another type of vector file?

I "upgraded" from Photoshop Elements... uh... mad old... to Elements 13 when my work computer got "upgraded" to Win8. Now I can't open EPS files which is how I receive collateral from our ad agency. What other vector files will work, and how can I convert EPS to these? Please be gentle if this is a stupid question - I know enough to be dangerous, but I'm not an expert at design by any means. I'm just frustrated because this isn't quite the "dead" file type that Adobe thinks it is. What was the point of upgrading if I'm pretty much left in the lurch?

What's important to understand is that Elements is a 'pixel' editor, not a 'vector' editor. As such, it has very limited 'vector' capacity (fonts, shapes...) What you are missing from older versions is the ability to convert vector items to standard pixel image file. To be able to open and work on eps files, you'd need Adobe Illustrator, which seems overkill for your purpose.
So, your options are:
- to request your ad agency to supply pdf format images instead of eps ones. My guess is that eps is beeing largely superseded by pdf, but I am not sure...
- Use external tools to convert from eps to jpeg; a Google search would return free softwares like Irfanview or web based conversion.
- You might want to keep (or reinstall) older Elements versions just for that purpose.

Opening EPS file in Photoshop 7.0, blacked out, can't see vector cutouts

this is a 10 year old eps file. we used it to make vinyl cutout stickers.
after opening in PS7, it's just black squares, without all the cutouts in each square.
when opened in notepad, these are the 1st 2 lines...

i don't need this stuff vectorized for cutting out this time. i plan to export jpg's for poster printing. so if i can at least open the file with the vectors visible, i could still work with and save as a psd. but to get those vectors, i gotta have AI? bummer.

Drag image file from Windows Explorer to a new layer in an open file

I want to know if it's possible in CS3 to drag an image file from Windows Explorer into an already open file in PS. Right now when I drag over, it opens that file. I want to have it where the image is inserted as a new layer into the existing open file. is that possible?

Hi, I'm using CS4 and would love to be able to drag n drop straight to a new layer in an existing file.
At present when I drag n drop I get a new image in PS. I then have to move this to my existing image. I have tried draging to the tab, the layer box, the image, the blank space, using shift,ctrl & alt.

I've had this happen a few times before. What I found works is repairing the permissions. To do so click on go and then to utilities. click disk utilities. In disk utilities select the drive and click repair permissions. It may take a little time but try accessing after that.

Opening MDF files in Diadem generated with Vector CANape v7.0?

I have a Vector CANape v7.0 data aquisition system that generates files in MDF format. I found the Diadem data plugin for MDF files and installed it. I can open the files, see the parameter names, but all the data is 0 (and it should not be).
The plugin looks up to date and the description mentions MDF version 3.0 & 3.2. We have CANape version 7.0. How do those numbers correspond? How can I open this file correctly?

This DataPlugin supports reading / importing of Bosch MDF data files, ETAS INCA® MDF data and Vector CANape® and other products from Vector. The DataPlugin supports MDF files up to version 3.2. The MDF DataPlugin also supports writing of MDF 3.0 and 3.2 files. Writing behavior is controlled by the root property 'version'; set version to "MDF 3.2" to write MDF 3.2 files.
The Measure Data Format (MDF) is well established in the automotive industry for recording, exchanging, and post-measurement analysis. MDF files are produced by eg. INCA® from ETAS, and by CANape® and other products from Vector.

With version 11.1, DIAdem has gained the ability to load CAN files directly through the "CAN Converter" that can be found in the NAVIGATOR "File" menu. You can test this with the free evaluation version that can be found at http://www.ni.com/diadem/ - this might take care of the issue you are having. Satellite U300 PSU3DA: error: cannot open attribute file executing C-Maps

I have a U300 PSU3DA which I changed from Vista to XP.
This is because my main use of the computer will be for navigation (boat) and I was told most navigation programs will run better with XP. I have hardly nothing on my laptop so far, and already the system seems to be slow and freezing too often.
My question now is about the program C-Maps which I've just installed and which won't open. It keeps saying "Eorror: cannot open attribute file".
What does that mean? I have desinstall and reinstall the program, and it keeps coming up with this message.
I had a look around the device manager and the only thing that seems wrong is the PCI memory controller.
I did a bit of a search on this and it seems that this driver is not necessary for XP? Is that so?
Could it be a cause of the C-Maps program not working?

I dont know if the driver is necessary but you get all drivers on the Toshiba website.
For your problem with C-Maps, I think the best is you contact the C-Maps support. Here it is a forum for Toshiba laptops.

I have a vector file of country map. How can I get file of just coordinates of each of country region?

I want to have a Russian map on my site which I could zoom and set different backgrounds for each region.
I see the best way for it in drawing it by javascript and canvas.

Hi, I work for a mapping company and one of our digital camera has a fault with the lens resulting in a small black mark appearing in exactly he same location of every image we capture what I would like is a script that can be used to open a file set the zoom say to 100% and move to pixel 3324x5493 so I user can repair it.
I thought this would be simple but I've been looking all evening without finding anything

I have something started but it isn't quite finished. It will center on the pixel and zoom in, but the only holdback is it increases the canvas size which will need to be cropped later. If you first set the Background layer to a non-Background layer your extra canvas will be transparent which will allow for a simple trim to return to the normal image later.

For centerON(234,3500); you would of course input your own x,y coordinates where you want to center the image.
The issue I'm having is that if I trim or crop the image, it will sometimes re-center the image elsewhere. I've tried using a crop with hide to center on the pixel then Reveal All to show the whole image again, but that also re-centers the image. Though, that may actually be a better way for you to do it afterall. Instead of increasing the canvas size, you could crop with hide to put the center on the pixel you want, then when finished just Reveal All.
It would just be easier if Photshop kept focus centered during a crop.

Photoshop CS5 won't open .kmz files

Photoshop CS5 won't open .kmz files. I did a fresh install of Google Earth, opened it, saved a place, and saved a .kmz file. It reopens fine in Google Earth.
When I try to open it in Photoshop, this message pops up:
File Format Error
This file is from a previous version of Google Earth or it is not a Google Earth file
I get this message regardless of the following:
- ps is closed and i right click the kmz and choose ps (rather than google earth) to open it
- ps is open and i double click the kmz
- ps is open and i choose file/open and select the kmz
- ps is open and i have created and saved a new psd file, then choose 3D/New Layer from 3D File/ and select the kmz
I have tried the usual remedies, change rwx permissions, repair permissions, delete prefs. No luck.
Any thoughts? Software versions are below.

I was trying to see (since Photoshop Extended touts the ability to open kmz files) if I could open a 3D Google Earth file and edit it in Photoshop. A file like this for instance http://ecotope.org/anthromes/maps/. After more research I've learned that kmz is nothing more that a container format - you can change the extension to zip and see what's in it.
I ran across this tidbit in the Photoshop CS3 Extended forum:
Photoshop CS3 Extended supports the ability to import .kmz files created from Google Earth 4 or exported from Sketch-up in the Google Earth 4 format. Photoshop CS3 Extended cannot open Google Earth files. If you have a Google Earth file, you can convert it to a Google Earth 4 format with the free version of Sketch-up.
So, theoretically if I could get a kmz into Google Earth 4 format, I could open it in Photoshop. But I haven't had any success importing a kmz or kml into SketchUp. Even just making a native sketchup file and trying to import that in psd gives a ram error.
Probably I'm wishing for the moon.

Opening ai files in CS4?

I have PS CS4 and have never used Illistrator but from what I have read about vector and ai files I would love to be able to use them. I create digital scrapbooking products and like how they can be sized without losing resolution quality. I can open ai files ok but everything is on one layer. Is there a way to open ai files in layers like PS? How can you edit individual parts of the picture? Thanks so much!

Yes, Smart Objects would be the best way to go, for what you want.
From AI, you can Export as a PS .PSD and get all Layers, but then you will have a Rasterized image in PS, and that is what it sounds like you are trying to avoid - you want it still in Vector, until you finish doing your editing.

Can Not Open ASPX Files In Dreamweaver CC ?

I just upgraded from Dreamweaver CS6 to Dreamweaver CC and now can no longer double click to open ASPX files.
Is this something that was removed from Dreamweaver CC?
Or, is there something I need to install or edit in order for it to work again?
I tried adding it to the Extensions.txt file, but doesn't seem to be working unless I entered it into incorrectly.

You can apply the default file association in windows. Follow http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows-vista/change-which-programs-windows-uses-by-def ault
Also, you can try adding it in DW preferences.
1) Go to Preferences < File Types/Editors.
2) Click on the "+" icon on left Column and add the extension you need.
3) Click on the "+" icon on right column and add the Editor as Dreamweaver. Locate the Dreamweaver.exe file installed at "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CC".
4) Click on Make Primary Button and Click OK.
5) Close DW and re-launch.

Unable to open .chm file from a link in weblogic server. But the same
jsp code works in Websphere

The above link, works well in websphere. help is a folder that
resides in the server. But when i tried to execute the same in
Weblogic, some junk characters appeared . so i tried to direct the

This could be a Launch Services issue. The following article describes how to manually reset Launch Services — the notes at the bottom of the article also provide information about the side effects of deleting each of the files involved:

If you prefer using a cache cleaning utility instead of following the manual procedure described in the previous article, take a look at this other article for general troubleshooting and cache-cleaning procedures. Actually, you should also verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described there:

The most appropriate utility for this particular problem probably is Tiger Cache Cleaner, but you may also want to consider other utilities, such as OnyX, or Cache Out X, which are free. Whatever utility you choose, be sure to read this first:

As an example, this is how you should proceed with OnyX:
1. Quit all applications.
2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.
3. Go to Maintenance > Reset and check LaunchServices database.
4. Un-check any other pre-checked options.
5. Click the Execute button.
6. Restart the computer.
BTW, if you’re running Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), as your profile indicates, it would have been more appropriate to discuss this in the Mail & Address Book - Tiger forum. If the discussion applies to both Mail 1.x and Mail 2.x, it doesn’t really matter, but it’s difficult to know that in advance.
