Vector Mask won't link to Smart Object

When I apply a vector layer mask to a Smart Object the mask won't link to the SO layer. Is there a way to force it to link?
I can't resize or move them at the same time, which is driving me crazy.

Put the SO in a group. Link the mask to the group.
Or upgrade to CS4.

  • Link a "Smart Object" with his Mask - possible?

    Hello -
    Is there a way to link a smart object and his mask?
    It's really annoying, because, when I move my smart object, his mask doesn't follow!
    Thank you, have a nice end of day

    At this time, Smart Objects can't have masks linked to them. So place your smart object in a group by itself, then create a mask for the group.

  • How to copy paste AI vector art to Dreamweaver CS5 as smart object fxg file ?

    ok so thats not an official adobe endorsed site your saying?
    I downloaded the video from there but I`m sure it was on youtube originally, I had downloaded it to view later,
    I uploaded it just now to my youtube account so I could have it posted here can you give me some feedback..
    it shows posting of the illustrator chart as smart object and then the data for the chart as xml so both can be updated live and even have live data.
    looks like someone was recording this session in the crowd,
    this is a private link to youtube so not public,
    let me know if you want me to take it down, but give me some clear answers first please how to do this if its possible..maybe I`m just not following the instructions carefully,, !

  • Pasting vectors from Fireworks to Photoshop as smart objects

    I'm trying to copy a vector object from Fireworks CS5 to Photoshop CS5, I want to past it as a Smart Object.
    I tried:
    - Normal copy and paste to PS: gives me a bitmap in PS
    - Copy as Vectors in FW > paste in PS gives me the paste option palette. When selecting Smart Object, I get an error:
    "Could not place because the parser module cannot parse the file."
    - Pasting the Fireworks vector object in Illustrator, then copying and pasting it in PS works fine, I can paste it as Smart Object.
    This should be straighforward, and used to work in CS3...
    Can anybody confirm this bug/problem?

    Doesn't work for me either. You can report bugs here: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

  • Auto Vector Mask won't let me get past the dialog box

    Something funny started happening a few weeks back- When I try to apply an auto vector mask, I hit 'Apply' and the dialog box stays there. If I continue to press 'Apply', it will affect the mask, but I can't get past the dialog box. The 'Cancel' button still works. I've gone as far as reinstalling Fireworks CS5, and the hiccup remains....

    Resolved- I had locked down the the #Shared Objects folder, so Flash Player couldn't write to it. Whoops. Thanks anyway, maybe this will help someone in the future!

  • Update Modified Content (Linked layers / Smart objects)

    Hey guys,
    Is there anything in the API for handling the new Linked layers? (CC 14.2)
    Specifically, I want to be able to Update Modified Content iteratively to handle lots of nested links.
    It doesn't have to be pretty, just functional, as this is a very complicated task to do manually.
    Cheers

    Crude, but maybe this helps:
    // 2014, use it at your own risk;
    #target photoshop
    if (app.documents.length > 0) {
    var ref = new ActionReference();
    ref.putEnumerated( charIDToTypeID("Dcmn"), charIDToTypeID("Ordn"), charIDToTypeID("Trgt") );
    var applicationDesc = executeActionGet(ref);
    var theXMP = applicationDesc.getString(stringIDToTypeID('XMPMetadataAsUTF8'));
    var theFiles = new Array;
    var theArray = theXMP.split("<stRef:filePath>");
    for (var m = 1; m < theArray.length; m++) {
    theFiles.push (theArray[m].slice(6,theArray[m].indexOf("</stRef:filePath>")));
    if (theFiles.length > 0) {alert(theFiles.join("\n"))};
    Edit: One problem, though: the list in the XMP metadata may not be up to date if the file has not been saved since the last linked SO has been placed or embedded.

  • RAW files linked as smart objects not affected by LR5

    My understanding of linking (rather than embedding) a file in the latest Photoshop CC 2014 is that it would allow the linked file to be edited outside of Photoshop and still update when the parent file is opened in Photoshop.
    However after placing, as a link, a raw file within Photoshop, (that had been edited in LR 5.7 and retains the last LR appearance), I find that if I reopen it in LR 5.7 and make further edits, it does not appear to affect the linked file in Photoshop. I am not even getting a ' ! ' to indicate something was changed outside of the program that I am in. Are raw files excluded from this feature? Are raw linked files still behaving as though they are 'embedded' and can only be further edited using Camera Raw?

    The Sidecar files are not in the LR catalog. You keep harping on LR doesn't use camera raw, which it does…
    No it does not.  It utilizes its own internal conversion engine, which is NOT Adobe Camera Raw.  It behaves very similarly, but it is NOT Adobe Camera Raw.
    Whatever you want to call that "module", it is NOT Adobe Camera Raw, and it's developed by the Lightroom Engineering Team, not by the Adobe Camera Raw Engineering Team.
    The various Adobe engineering teams are totally independent of each other, they are not only in different buildings but in different cities and states of the American Union, even in different countries.
    The fact that they have little if any communication among them is highlighted by requests occasionally made in these forums by top Adobe engineers to let the other teams know when there are problems in one application that impact our workflow in another one.

  • Smart Object as traditional link (as in InDesign or Illustrator)

    Is there a way to link a smart object, so that updates are made to the originally placed object ....as opposed to creating a new vector file save in a temporaray folder.  Is there a way to work with smart object like traditional links in InDesign and Illustrator?

  • Is possible to save a vector.pdf with smart object?

    Hi PS masters
    I am finishing a poster, fully created in shapes in illustrator. Due to customers request I was forced to do some color corrections so I decided to use my PhotoShop CS6.
    I imported vector files into my photoshop as smart objects, added some adjustments layer, few vector masks and I changed their layer style to get the finest result.
    When I finished my work in PS I tryed to save this as .pdf
    In my .psd there are shape layers, some groups and some adjustments layers with layer masks and changed Layer style to "color", one text layer and 3 smart objects imported from illustrator.
    I want to keep my image scaleable for bigger resolutions.
    ... So I was trying to save this file as Adobe PDF but I found that whole graphic in exported .pdf was converted to raster, besides the border, cut marks and that one text layer.
    I think that this is becuase of smart objects. (saving as .pdf without them works pretty good)
    Now finaly my question.  Is somehow possible to save this document from photoshop as vector.pdf? or is possible to import group of shapes from illustrator to photoshop as shapes in photoshop? no as smart objects.
    I am running out of time so I saved it as high res .Jpeg, but I want to know if this is somehow possible for future use or If I have to rather avoid that solution.
    Thank you very much for your reactions
    // I just thought if I can use InDesign for that. Will be included .pdf file as raster? or it will stay scaleable even with smart objects in it?

    I am sorry but I don't have vector files right now (I'm on another PC), but I can show you "old" version of a poster, where you can see parts of their structure

  • Enlarged Smart Objects with vectors inside them appear as resized bitmaps

    In Photoshop CC for Mac I have...
    Created layers of vector art
    Combined them into a smart object
    Enlarged the smart object (both via "Transform" and "Image Size")
    Upon enlarging, the vector objects look the way an enlarged bitmap would (i.e. fuzzy, pixelated, terrible) instead of crisp and clean as a vector should look. I've double- and triple-checked to make sure all layers have remained vector after resizing and they have.
    This is a terrible inconvenience for anyone that works heavily with vector smart objects and resizes them. I use this workflow on a daily basis to make adapting interface elements for various screen resolutions easier, without it I am beyond screwed.
    If anyone knows a workaround (or if this requires a setting that I haven't found to be changed) please let me know.

    you may want to read it from the beginning.
    Basically while a smart object layer embedded object may contain  vector graphics.  Photoshop renders a composite for the embedded object and uses the resulting rendered pixels for the smart object layers pixels.  When you transform a smart object layer your transforming those pixels like raster layer using your Photoshop preference interpolation preference..  If you want to resize the vector graphics contained in the embedded object you must open the embedded object into the approbate application and resize the embedded object using vector tools. After you commit the resize. Photoshop will update the embedded object and the layers pixel will be the composite rendered for the updated resized embedded object.

  • Illustrator Smart Objects are "Linking" to each other in PS file.

    This strange behavior started after I upgraded to the latest PS CC which includes the "linked" vs "embedded" smart object feature.
    When I edit previously created PS files that contain mulitple linked Illustrator smart objects, an edit to one smart object will update a different smart object within the same file. These are not duplicates of a single smart object layer, they are completely independent smart objects, containing different graphics.
    Has anyone else seen this? Is there anyway to break the link between all Illustrator graphics within a document so this won't continue to happen?

    Here'a link to the original file. http://adobe.ly/1d6uwA1
    This was created with PS CS6. I recently had to do some modifications to it, and that's when I noticed the strange behavior with SO. Of course when I tried to duplicate the weirdness this morning, I was unable to do so. I know for certain though, that on two different occasions I updated one SO layer and the it replaced the contents of a different SO layer.
    I did notice some other oddities while playing with this today. Here's what I did.
    Open the file, and save with a new name to make a copy.
    Edit a couple SO layers with Illustrator
    Close the file and save
    Open the file back in PS and again edit a SO
    This time when I save the SO I get this message "This file has been modified outside of Illustrator. Do you want to continue". I say yes to save it. I only get this message after I have closed the file and reopened it for more edits.
    Another oddity; if I leave a SO open in Illustrator by just saving without closing the file. Then close the Photoshop file linked to that SO. When I open a new Photoshop file and try to open a SO within it, PS thinks the SO that was left open is the one I want to work on. I have to close out the previous SO to get the new one to open correctly.
    I work with a lot of Illustrator SO's in PS. So I will continue to monitor what happens, and try to pay very close attention to what steps I took if and when the weirdly linked SO layers happens again.

  • Vector Smart Object inside another smart object losing quality after scale

    Hi,
    I have 6 icons created on Illustrator and imported as vector smart objects.
    Then, I select all 6 and create another Smart Object from then.
    If I scale this smart object now, it will loose it´s quality, as if the icons were raster in the first place.
    This was not what happend in in PS CS5.
    It´s a bug or new "feature"?
    Rodrigo C.

    You need to realize that Photoshop renders pixels for the embedded object  then when you scale the smart object layer it scale like and raster layer through interpolation not scaled with vector graphics. Its the way smart object layers work. Hers is a very old thread on the subject

  • Smart Object Anti-Aliasing issues in PS CS5

    I am having a heck of a time working with smart objects that contain transparency in CS5. Here is an example of what I'm experiencing:
    1,700px smart object scaled down to 156px. No transparency in SO. Good anti-aliasing.
    Same smart object, but with a layer mask or transparency in the smart object. But alas: horrible anti-aliasing, throughout the entire image.
    I frequently embed my transparency within the SOs I work with, due to the limitations of linking embedded SOs with layer masks etc. I experienced no problems in CS3. I'm thinking this is a bug? Does anyone have any insight? Thanks!
    UPDATE: after performing many tests, and noticing that having transparency in a smart object does not necessarily lead to poor anti-aliasing in the parent image, I have narrowed-down the issue. The issue will occur only if at least an antire column or row of pixels (of any height/width) along the border of the image are transparent. It does not matter if the transparency is at the top, bottom, sides, or surrounding the image, but it must take up some amount of an entire side. This is looking more and more like a bug... Is anyone able to replicate the issue? (Adobe engineers?) Thanks.

    Here is the file I'm seeing this in. Incidentally, if I drag the problematic smart object to another open image, the appearance is the same (Photoshop is, after all, the epitome of wysiwyg software). But this works both ways: I can also re-create the smart object in another document without the poor anti-aliasing, then drag it into the original image and it will still look fine. (in this file there are two side-by-side, so that you can compare the two. you can also play with the smart object on the left to see the anti-aliasing go from good to bad; just go into the SO and delete a row or column of pixels from the border and re-save).
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8162462/SO-aa-issue%3F.tif
    (i used Dropbox; lmk if there's a better way to post a file in this forum)
    Since I just started using CS5 (from CS3), I have suspicions that it may be a version translation issue (either in the TIFF or smart object). Either way, I'm glad that this is not a common or easily-reproduced issue. Let me know if you learn anything from the file
    Thanks,
    Cory

  • Smart Objects without tmp files

    I am trying to place/ import a .psd as a smart object into a composite and have Photoshop keep referenceing that same psd witout it creating a local tmp file.
    does anyone know fi this can be done?
    Thanks!

    Embedded objects are independent of any original file. Embedded objects are a copy of whatever (file, layer, group, etc)  anything supported by Photoshop.  You can have smart object layers in a document that share a common object.  If you replace that common shared object all the smart object layers that share that the object pixels will change and be transformed by the smart object layer's associated transform.  This is often used for  creating picture packages. However the replacement object must be the same size as the original object for all the transforms to work correctly.
    In fact when you update a smart object layer by double clicking on a layer's smart icon in the layers palette.  Photoshop copies the object into a unique file in your user id temp space the first time you double click on a layers smart icon as a work file. This file will remain there till the document containing the object the temp file was created for is closed in Photoshop. If you make more the a single edit  to a smart object  layer in an edit session the same file will be use only a single temp file is used any given object. Photoshop will delete any temp files it created for a document when the document is closed in Photoshop. When users commit changes to the temp work file Photoshop will update the documents embedded object. The work file may be updated  by Photoshop or a Plug-in like ACR.
    There have been threads about creating  metadata links for Smart Object layer to help user try to keep things in sync.  I don't know if its possible or that is that desirable not to have versions of objects
