Vector to smart object

I have an illustrator file on vector that I bring the object to photoshop and transform to smart object but keeps on messing up the pixels when I use the transform tool to change the size....why? Isn't "smart object" made to not give that problem on photoshop?

What problem?
What exactly happens (a few screenshots might help clarify)?

  • Photoshop Vectors and Smart Objects Create Blurring

I have been supplied a Photoshop document that has Illustrator Vector files that have been placed in the PSD as Smart objects.
When I bring the PSD into InDesign and print it, all the PSD artwork is blurry.
How can I get the PSD file to print from InDesign at high quality.
The PSD file is at 300 dpi. I have tried bringing it into InDesign as PSD, TIFF, EPS & PDF, but it's the same issue every time.

  • Photoshop CS6 Scaling issues: Vector/Raster smart objects

My team and I have noticed some strange issues when affecting the overall interpolation of a .psd via scaling, cropping, or canvas resize.
    Test:
Original .psd is even x even overall pixel dimensions.
Original vector and raster smart object assets are all proportionally scaled with width x height percentages equal.
Preferences: "Snap vector tools and transforms to pixel grid" is turned off
Resize .psd via Image > Image Size palette.
    Scale styles, constrain proportions selected.
    Every interpolation style tested.
    Resize the .psd to 50%
Result: All smart objects (both types) no longer are proportionately scaled. Usually off by a minor amount under 1/10th of a percent.
Some objects' center point shift a half pixel to the right or left.
This also occurs if we use the crop tool or resize the canvas.
Is this a known bug and if so, is there:
    1) any setting to truly lock proportions?
    2) any resolution being pursued currently?
Though the shift and the disproproptions seem minor, the overall quality of items such as icons, hairlines, and other things that should be more crisp become far more degraded in CS6 vs CS5.
We have over 100 users and need to evaluate if we should drop back down to CS5, where we weren't having any of these issues, as our work demands a lot of precision, so you can see why this is worrisome.
    Thanks!

I'm not going to say anything about the abysmal rendering of Vector Smart Objects in CS6 because it'll be beating a dead horse but I can explain the issues you see with measurements after scaling.
The slightly disproportionate scaling and half-pixel shift of the centre is unavoidable when it happens because the resulting Smart Object/Vector Smart Object must measure an integer number of pixels in height and width and be perfectly aligned to the document pixel grid. That's true in CS5 and CS6.
Say a SO/VSO originally measures 102 x 103 pixels and you scale it by 50%. The Options bar may say the result is 51 x 51.5 px but the result will really be 51 x 52 px, and therefore the new height will really be 50.49% of the old height.
The original SO/VSO is an even number of pixels wide and an odd number of pixels high, therefore its centre will be halfway down a pixel. The 50%-scaled SO/VSO is an odd number of pixels wide and an even number of pixels high, therefore its centre will be halfway across a pixel.

  • Illustrator CS4 Text & Shape logo is pixelated when placing as smart object in PS

I made a Logo in Illustrator CS4 containing text & shape. The lines are crisp and clear at 100% & 200%+. I save my file as an ai and also another version as outlined. But when I copy & paste it into Photoshop CS4 as a smart object it becomes pixelated when I zoom in more than 100%. Is there a way to fix this?
When I use to do this in CS3 it worked fine, but now it doesn't work. The Photoshop file, placed as a smart object is the one on the left at 200%. You can already tell the pixels are distorted. The one on the right side is Illustrator file at 800% and is still crisp & clean. I've saved as eps, tiff, jpeg from illustrator and when opening it in photoshop and zooming in it's pixelated....and yes AA is turned on in Illustrator and nothing happens when I view as overprint either.
First, I'd like the logo in jpeg crisp and clear when zoomed in.
Second, I'd like to resolve the smart object issue in PS. I know a smart object will hold it's quality no matter the resize of the image in PS, but I can't get it to work... Can someone offer any suggestions

What is the ppi of the Photoshop file?
And for what it's worth, any raster image will never be as crisp and clear as a vector image, smart object or otherwise. Photoshop shows raster previews even if the actual object is vector. If you zoom in on any raster iamge, you'll see pixelation.

  • Program error when attempting to edit a vector smart object. Help?

I'm running Photoshop CS6 (13.0.1) 64bit on a MacBook Pro running OS X Lion. About 60% of the time when I try to double click a vector smart object instead of opening it up in Illustrator I get an error that says, "Could not edit original smart object because of program error." This most recent time it was a smart object from vector data I copied and pasted from Illustrator into Photoshop.
Any idea why this is happening and how I can fix it?
    Thanks.

    Hi there,
I got this problem when I installed Adob master collection Over CS 5.
I had children book story storis which created in Adobe illustrator CS 5 and I created art boards in Adobe photoshop cs 5.
After installting CS 6 i tried to edit the smart objects and it was not opeinging the smart object file in Illustrator.
    I did some tests.
    1) Right click on smart object layer and click export contents. Save on desktopp or anywhere you want. (I saved on desktop)
    2) I had this file on my desktop (Vector Smart Object10.ai) but it didn't show any icon, which program should open this type of file.
    3) Double click on the file and it pop up a extension window 'Click on change and select adobe illustrator' and press OK.
    4) Go back to your photoshop file and right click on smart object layer and click dit content. now this time it opens up assets in illustrator.
    ENJOY!

  • Is it possible to export Vector Smart Objects as vector SVG files from Photoshop CC 2014?

I have Vector Smart Objects copied from Illustrator and pasted into Photoshop. I would like to export them as vector SVG files (using Generator or Extract Assets). I can add the .svg extension to the layer and actually export an SVG just fine. The problem is any SVG I have exported have all been raster images. It defeats the purpose of having that as an option as far as I'm concerned.
I remember watching and listening to keynotes and other speakers at Adobe MAX 2014 who said it was so powerful and amazing to create SVG files from Photoshop. If we're still exporting raster SVG files from Photoshop...that's not very impressive or exciting--especially since this era of modern web development benefits greatly from using vector SVG files.
I understand that Shape Layers can be exported as vector SVG files but that seems very limiting. I also realize that users can create some impressive vectors in Photoshop, but that is not optimal. Illustrator is a better tool for creating vectors and I normally use Photoshop and Illustrator side-by-side. I know that vector SVG files can be exported from Illustrator but that isn't as user friendly and convenient as utilizing Photoshop > Generator > Reflow.
My idea was to create my assets in Illustrator, paste them into Photoshop as Vector Smart Objects, set up my layout, and then use the Generator/Reflow method or Extract Assets to get a new web design started.
Maybe I misunderstood what the speakers at Adobe MAX had said. Perhaps it's just user error and I'm just missing something simple (it happens).
Photoshop CC 2014 notes the following under Help > System Info:
    Adobe Photoshop Version: 2014.2.2 20141204.r.310 2014/12/04:23:59:59 CL 994532  x64
    Operating System: Windows 8.1 64-bit
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance for your time.

Not quite the same, but have a look at the new Libraries feature that came with 2014.2.2  I just tried it, and dragging a vector object into a library I created in Photoshop, was there in Illustrator.  This happens without having to close and reopen Illustrator.  Just use the drop down at the top of the Libraries panel (in Illustrator) to find your custom, or job specific library.

  • How to copy objects from Pages (5.5.1) and paste it into Photoshop as a vector smart object with high resolution?

I recently have bought a new Macbook Pro (Version 10.10.1) with the OS X Yosemite. The computer comes with the new Pages (version 5.5.1).
Here is the problem: I like to create artwork using the shapes on Pages. Previously, on my old mac, I used Pages 4.3 to create objects, which I would copy then paste to Photoshop and it would become a vector smart object. However, in the new Pages (version 5.5.1), when I copy objects, they would appear on Photoshop as instead, a layer and it would not be in full resolution.
Also, I know there is nothing wrong with the Pages file itself because I have converted the document to PDF form and it is high resolution when inserted into Photoshop that way.
Does anyone know how I can copy individual objects from Pages (5.5.1) and paste it into Photoshop as a vector smart object with high resolution as I have done before?
    Thanks!

Oh, well if you don't actually need vector objects then it looks like this is possible. As I said earlier, Pages is putting a PNG on the clipboard. I tested it and it does paste into Photoshop as a transparent layer, because I can see the transparent background of the pasted PNG graphic if I either turn off all layers behind it in Photoshop, or if I start a new Photoshop document to paste into but make sure I choose Transparent for the Background Contents in the New Document dialog.

  • PS opens vector smart object all pixilated

I have this problem when using graphics from Illustrator as vector smart objects in Photoshop. I have followed tones of heated discussions on this but I haven't got any further. So here is what I do following the steps on the PS help: I copy graphics in AI and paste them in PS as smart object. A layer will be added that even has the name vector smart object but the graphic itself is all pixilated. Now the size of my PS-file is 150X150 Pixels with a resolution of 300. I need this size because I want to implement the file into my website and the layout requires this size for all my graphics. I would say it doesn't matter much what size the file is anyway since according to the PS help whatever vector smart object I place in Photoshop it won't change image quality when transformed. Therefor I'd say that not even the small file should be a problem here. But obviously there is something not working... because even when, to compare, I paste the graphic as pixel it shows the same result. Strange enough that I have used this vector smart objects before and it worked just fine... So I tried to paste the graphic in different ways, saving it as pdf in AI and then placing it in PS, insert it directly as smart object, making sure the file handling and clipboard references are adjusted, and finally after no success trashing the preferences in both applications. Still not closer to a satisfying result. I attach the graphics (first the AI graphic, then the vector smart object from PS) to show the difference and maybe there is someone out there that can tell what I am doing wrong. By the way I just converted the files to jpegs to post them here so the sizes might not match on the screen...

    One other thing to check...
Are you viewing the display at 100%?
Photoshop's OpenGL-based image resizing algorithms are smoother and fuzzier than they used to be (or than they are with OpenGL disabled).  What I'm getting at is that you may be perceiving fuzziness in the display that's not really there in the image.
How does the fuzziness look if you zoom in a lot?

  • How do i open my multiple smart objects in my psd in one illustrator vector file?

    HELLO
    I have created a psd.
It contains multiple smart objects which when double clicked link you to illustrator.
I would like to open all the vector images from this file in one illustrator file.
    Is this possible?

I guess it might be (almost) possible with Scripting in principle but probably not practically.
    To elaborate:
One could open all the Smart Objects with a Script and with BridgeTalk it should be possible to have Illustrator perform tasks on those.
But one can not, as far as I know, directly access scale, rotation, skew of a placed Smart Object with a Script, so that information would have to be determined with work-arounds or (partially) neglected.
If you need vector output why did you make the arrangement in Photoshop?

  • Keynote 6.0 vector smart object conversion to Photoshop CS6

    Hi,
I upgraded to OS 10.9 and Keynote 6.0. In the previous version of Keynote, I was able to easily paste Keynote content (words, shapes, charts) into Photoshop CS6 & Illustrator CS6 as vector objects, of which the elements could be independently manipulated by releasing the clipping mask.
However, with Keynote 6.0, it appears the content mentioned above pastes into CS6 software as .tiff files with no option to convert to a vector smart object?  Is there a way to force a vector object placement or does this new Keynote version no allow (and if so why eliminate such a convenient function as vector smart objects)?
    Thanks for the help...

    Hello  thanks for your answers,
i posted this when i was upset because it was a very frustrating situation. I create Vector art in Illustrator and most of the times i just copy and paste them into Photoshop. I dont use Illustrator Cs6 because some Issues with the color Picker and because i Use Scriptographer alot. So i use Photoshop CS6 and Illustrator CS 5.
Somehow recently i noticed this strange behaviour. When i close Illustrator completely and doubleclick the Layer in Photoshop it works fine.

  • Is possible to save a vector.pdf with smart object?

    Hi PS masters
I am finishing a poster, fully created in shapes in illustrator. Due to customers request I was forced to do some color corrections so I decided to use my PhotoShop CS6.
I imported vector files into my photoshop as smart objects, added some adjustments layer, few vector masks and I changed their layer style to get the finest result.
When I finished my work in PS I tryed to save this as .pdf
In my .psd there are shape layers, some groups and some adjustments layers with layer masks and changed Layer style to "color", one text layer and 3 smart objects imported from illustrator.
I want to keep my image scaleable for bigger resolutions.
... So I was trying to save this file as Adobe PDF but I found that whole graphic in exported .pdf was converted to raster, besides the border, cut marks and that one text layer.
I think that this is becuase of smart objects. (saving as .pdf without them works pretty good)
Now finaly my question.  Is somehow possible to save this document from photoshop as vector.pdf? or is possible to import group of shapes from illustrator to photoshop as shapes in photoshop? no as smart objects.
I am running out of time so I saved it as high res .Jpeg, but I want to know if this is somehow possible for future use or If I have to rather avoid that solution.
Thank you very much for your reactions
// I just thought if I can use InDesign for that. Will be included .pdf file as raster? or it will stay scaleable even with smart objects in it?

I am sorry but I don't have vector files right now (I'm on another PC), but I can show you "old" version of a poster, where you can see parts of their structure

  • Flv player is opening vector smart objects instead of illustrator.

How do I re-associate vector smart objects in Photoshop to open in Illustrator as they did before the update?

Editing smart objectrs uses the system wide associations, not the ones from Bridge, so you need to adjust that for the *.ai file type.

  • Smart Objects Vector Resizing is Blurry

    Hello all,
I was hoping someone could help me out with this. It's driving me nuts.
Basically, I've always used a combination of vector objects converted to smart objects to retain the ability to resize an object within my master comp...but also be able to make changes to the layer within the smart object if need be. Basically, the primary purpose of a smart object
However, lately, when I convert a VECTOR object to a smart object and increase it's size, the image becomes blurry. Any idea why this is happening? I've linked to a video clip i made to help demonstrate the issue below.
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3645/smartobject.mov

I appreciate the reply...but this has always worked in the past. Even with more complex layers.
If you think it worked in the past, its probably because you had an Illustrator Smart Object. Using Illustrator Smart Objects is the only way you can get genuine vector scaling to work, so that its completely lossless when you rescale.  Photoshop vectors only rescale based on the resolution of the child document.
In the case of your example, you can sort out the problem by opening the Smart Object, upscaling it, and saving. You will then have to go back to the master document and transform the object down again by the same proportion.

  • Enlarged Smart Objects with vectors inside them appear as resized bitmaps

In Photoshop CC for Mac I have...
    Created layers of vector art
Combined them into a smart object
Enlarged the smart object (both via "Transform" and "Image Size")
Upon enlarging, the vector objects look the way an enlarged bitmap would (i.e. fuzzy, pixelated, terrible) instead of crisp and clean as a vector should look. I've double- and triple-checked to make sure all layers have remained vector after resizing and they have.
This is a terrible inconvenience for anyone that works heavily with vector smart objects and resizes them. I use this workflow on a daily basis to make adapting interface elements for various screen resolutions easier, without it I am beyond screwed.
If anyone knows a workaround (or if this requires a setting that I haven't found to be changed) please let me know.
    Screenshot proof below:

    Read this thread -link http://forums.adobe.com/message/3498406#3498406
you may want to read it from the beginning.
Basically while a smart object layer embedded object may contain  vector graphics.  Photoshop renders a composite for the embedded object and uses the resulting rendered pixels for the smart object layers pixels.  When you transform a smart object layer your transforming those pixels like raster layer using your Photoshop preference interpolation preference..  If you want to resize the vector graphics contained in the embedded object you must open the embedded object into the approbate application and resize the embedded object using vector tools. After you commit the resize. Photoshop will update the embedded object and the layers pixel will be the composite rendered for the updated resized embedded object.

  • Why do vector shapes in scaled smart objects blur?

This remains a point of frustration.
Why does converting a vector shape to a smart object in Photoshop mean that it's then treated as a bitmap and blurs when scaled up?
If i paste the same vector shape into Illustrator and then back into Photoshop as a smart object it then behaves correctly, and remains sharp.
See the image for example of what i mean. Left is the master shape, centre is it converted into a smart object in Photoshop, right pasted to and from Illustrator. These were then scaled 300% resulting in the centre one blurring.
I don't really want to have to invovle Illustrator in this way and keep all my vector work in Photoshop now it has the tools to do so, but this issue creates me a lot of extra work.
Or am i doing something wrong?
    Rob

Smart Object layers are transform to other sizes through interpolating the pixels rendered for the embedded object not be using vector graphics on the embedded object.. If your resize resizes the pixel count way un the image will become soft.  Yoy can try seting your Photoshop Default interpolation setting to other setting then Adobe default Bicubic Automatic to something like plain bicubic which IMO is a better general purpose option then Bicubic Automatic.
You can also open the embedded object by double clicking  the smart layers smart object icon in the layers palette. Once opened in Photoshop resize the vector graphic using Image size and save  the embedded vector object larger. Photoshop will update the smart object layers content then.
