Vendors pulling software, shady practice.

Recently "Apparent Software" decided to re-release their previous "Blast Utility" as a new application called "Trickster." In doing so they completely pulled "Blast Utility" from the App store without notifying customers.
I would like to know how a vendor can take people's money, then remove their access to the software (I am unable to download it again as it is no longer in the store) without any notice or any option for a refund? This seems very shady and very unfair. The vendor should be required to leave the last version available of the software available for download, or to provide full refunds if they are no longer making the software available. My guess is the vendor wants to get around Apple's policy of not charging for upgrades and this is how they go about it, they even offer a free upgrade for anyone who purchased "Blast Utility" within the last 3 months. Looking at "Trickster" I can hardly see any vast upgrade in features that would require a whole new release, I'm sure it's even using the same code base.
If I purchased the same package from a store the vendor could not come into my house and take back the software package out of my hands, the same should apply to App store sales. Granted this was a $5 piece of software, but what happens when some big name company pulls the same thing with their big ticket application?
I think from now on I'll be making my purchases the traditional way until Apple does something to prohibit this behavior in the future.

This is why many people back up their App Store purchases. What you describe about the vendor taking the physical purchase back after you've bought it is equivalent to them breaking into your computer/house and deleting the copies there and not just pulling it from the App Store.
Anyone who still has a copy of it after it was pulled from the App Store will still be able to use it. Those people shouldn't be entitled to a refund.
Backing up your purchases is your responsibility.

    My laptop is windows 64bit. I could not find R12 under this operating system. What is the OS?
    Oracle EBS R12 cannot be installed on 64-bit and you will have to install it on 32-bit (or install on 32-bit then migrate to 64-bit).

    I am not sure i am doing the installation correctly. Once you install the right OS, please run md5sum to verify the integrity of the stage area directory.

  • Installation of Companion Software - Best Practices

    Hi everyone,
    I have an NFS server (sparc solaris 10 11/06) and a client (x86_64 solaris 11/06). I would like to install many of the offerings on the Sun Companion Software disc.
    In the past, because of disk space and patching convenience, we installed all of the /opt/sfw stuff on the server in /export/ and NFS exported everything to the clients. When a new version came out, we just reinstalled over the path (unless parallel installs were desired).
    Now, clients have gobs of local disk space, and a cleaner patching system.
    Is it better to now install, say tetex, locally onto each client? Will Sun Update Connection offer patches to such when the client contacts the patching mother ship?
    Or, is it better to still go with a network install?
    Does anyone have some documentation or white papers on this topic they can direct me to?

    Nothing. Adobe apps don't migrate settings to avoid compatibility issues. You will have to set them up from scratch or import/ export them, where possible.
    Will old projects still work in the new software?
    Sure. that's the whole point of selling upgrades. Just be aware that this is a one way road and you can't go back and open an AE CS6 project on CS5... for specific issues and caveats, ask on the product forums.
    Is there a way for me to keep soundbooth without keeping the whole creative suite 5?
    Uninstall the whole suite, then run a custom reinstall and only choose SB.
    Does Audition have scores available for download like soundbooth does?

  • Software RAID Failure - my experience and solution

    I just wanted to share this information with the iCloud community.
    I searched a bit and did not find much information that was useful with regard to my software RAID issue.
    I have 27 inch Mid 2011 iMac with SSD and Hard drive which has been great.
    I added an external hard drive (I think if I mention any brand name the moderator will delete this post) which includes an nice aluminum case with two 3 TB hard drives within it, and it has a big blue light on the front and is connected via Thunderbolt. This unit is about 2 years old and I have it configured in a 3 TB mirrored RAID (RAID 1) via a software RAID configured via Mac OS Disk Utility. 
    I had at one point a minor glitch which was fixed using another piece of software (again if I mention a brand the moderator will delete this post) which is like a 'Harddrive Fighter' or similar type name LOL.   So otherwise that RAID has served me well as a site for my Time Machine back up and Aperture Vault, etc.  (I created a 1.5 TB Sparse bundle for Time Machine so that the backup would not use the entire 3 TBs)
    I recently purchased a second aluminum block of drives, and set that up as a 4 TB RAID 1.
    Each of the two RAIDs are set with the option of “Automatically rebuild RAID mirror sets” checked.
    I put only about 400 gb on the new RAID to let it sit for a ‘burning in period.’
    A few days ago the monitoring software from the vendor who sells the aluminum block of drives told me I had a problem.  One of the drives had “Failed.”   The monitoring software strangely enough does not distinguish the drives so you can figure out which pair had the issue, so I assumed it was the New 8 TB model.  Long story short, it was the older 6 TB model, but that does not matter for this discussion.
    I contacted the vender and this is part of their response.
    “This is an indication that the Disk Utility application in Mac had a momentary problem communicating with the drive mechanism. As a result, it marked that drive as "failed" in the header information. Unfortunately, once this designation is applied to a drive by the OS, the Disk Utility will thereafter refuse to attempt any further operations with that disk until the incorrect "failed" marker is manually cleared off the drive.”
    That did not sound very good to me…..back up killed by a SOFTWARE GLITCH?
    “The solution is to remove the corrupted volume header, and allow the generation of a new one….This command will need to be done for each disk in the array… (using Terminal)…
    diskutil zerodisk (identifier)
    …3. After everything is finished, you should be able to exit Terminal, and go back into the Disk Utility Application to re-configure the RAID array on the device.”
    Furthermore they said.
    “If the Disk Utility has placed a flag into the RAID array header (which exists on both drives) then performing this procedure on a single drive will not correct anything.”
    And…
    “When a drive actually does fail, it typically stops appearing in the Disk Utility application altogether. In that circumstance, it will never be marked "failed" by the Disk Utility, so the header erase operation is not needed.”
    This all sounded like a bad idea to me. And what does the Vendors RAID monitor software say then?  “Disk Really Really FAILED, check for a fire.”
    As I tried to figure out which drive was actually the bad RAID pair I stumbled on a solution.
    First I noted that the OS Disk Utility did NOT show a fault in the RAID. It listed both RAIDS as “Online.’ Thus no rebuilding was needed and it did not begin the rebuild process.
    The Vendors disk monitor software saw some fault, but Mac was still able to read and write to the RAID, both disks in the mirror.  I wrote a folder to the RAID and with various rebooting steps I pulled the “Bad” drive and looked at the “Good” Drive….the folder was there…I put the Bad drive back in and pulled the Good Drive and the folder was there on the “bad” drive.  So it wrote to both drives.  AND THE VENDORS MONITORING SOFTWARE SHOWED THE PREVIOUSLY LABELED ‘BAD’ DRIVE AS ‘GOOD’ AND THE MISSING DRIVE SLOT AS ‘BAD’.
    My stumbled FIX.   I moved a bunch of files off the failed RAID to the new RAID  but before I moved the sparse bundle, a folder of 500 gigs movies and some other really big folders the DISK UTILITY WINDOW (which I still had open) now showed that the RAID had a Defect and began rebuilding the mirror set itself, out of the blue!   I don't know why this happened.  But moving about 1/2 of the data off of it perhaps did something?  Any Ideas?
    This process took a few hours as best I can tell (let it run overnight) and the next day the RAID was fine and the Vendors RAID monitor did not show a fault any longer.
    So, the Vendors RAID monitoring software reporting a “FAILED” drive without any specific error codes to look up.  Perhaps they could have more info for the user on the specific fault?  The support line of the the Vendor said with certainty “the Volume Header is corrupted” and THE ONLY FIX is to completely ZERO THE DRIVE! This was not necessary as it turns out.
    And the stick in the eye to me…..
    “I've also sometimes seen the drives get marked as "failed" by the disk utility due to a shaky connection. In some cases, swapping the ends of the Thunderbolt cable will help with this. Something to try, perhaps, if your problems come back. “

    Follow up.
    After going through the Zeroing process and rebuilding the RAID set three times, with various configurations, LaCie finally agreed to repair the unit under warrantee.
    I tried swapping the power supplies and thunderbolt wires, tried taking the drive out of series with the newer big brother of it.  And it still failed after a few days.
    I just wanted to share more of what I learned with regard to rebuilding the RAID sets via the Terminal.  The commands can be typed partially and a help paragraph will come up to give VERY cryptic descriptions of the proper use of the commands.
    First Under terminal you can used the command "diskutil appleRAID list" to list those drives which are in the RAID.  This gives you the ID number for each physical drive. For example:

    In my situation with the failed RAID, I had an extra disk in this with the status of Missing/Failed. 
    The command is "diskutil appleRAID remove" and the cryptic help paragraph says:
    Usage:  diskutil appleRAID remove MemberDeviceName|MemberUUID
            RAIDSetVolumePath|RAIDSetDeviceName|RAIDSetUUID
    MemberDeviceName|MemberUUID  is the number listed in the "diskutil appleRAID List" command,  and
    RAIDSetVolumePath|RAIDSetDeviceName|RAIDSetUUID is the Device Node for the RAID which here is /dev/disk4.
    I used this command to remove the third entry (missing/failed), I did not copy the terminal window text on that one, so I cannot show the list of three disks.
    I could not get to remove the disk2s2 disk listed as SPARE, as it gave an error message:

    But I was able to remove it using the graphical interface Disk Utility program using the delete key.
    I then rebuilt the RAID set by dragging the second drive back into the RAID set.
    I could not get the command: "diskutil appleRAID update AutoRebuild 1 /dev/disk4" to work, because even though it was trying to execute it HUNG.  I put the two drives into my newer LaCie 2big as my attempt at further trouble shooting the RAID (this was not suggested by LaCie tech), rebuild the RAID and now I am going to leave it setup that way for a few days before I ship it back to just see if the old drives work fine in the new RAID box (thus proving the RAID box is the problem). I tried the AutoRebuild 1 command just now and it gave an error.

    In my haste to rebuild the RAID set for the third or forth time as LaCie led me through the testing this and test that phase, I forgot to click the "Auto Rebuild" option in the Disk Utility program.
    Question for the more experienced:
    As I was working on this issue, I notice that each time I rebooted and did work in the Terminal (with and without the RAID plugged in to the thunderbolt connection) I notice that the list of drives would change and my main boot drive would not stay listed as drive 0!  Some times it would be drive 0, sometimes the RAID would be listed as Drive 0.  It's strange to me...I would have thought the designation for Drive0 and Drive1 would always be my two build in drives (SSD and spinning drive).

    I assume this step-by-step guide can also be used if you have more then 2 nodes, as long as you make sure majority of nodes are up (and quorum disk is available).
    I just had a strange experience during maintenance of 2 nodes (node nr 7 and nr 8) in a 8 node hyper-v cluster R2 SP1 with CSV. I used SCVMM2012 to put the nodes in maintenance mode. (live migrating all resources to other nodes.) I then look in "Failover cluster
    manager" to check that the nodes had been "Paused". And yes everything was just fine. I then did windows update and restartet, no problem. But after restart I wanted to run PSP (HP's update utility) to update some more drivers,software etc. During this PSP
    update, node nr 02 suddenly failed. This node is not even a HP Blade, so I'm not sure how, but I know network NIC drivers and software where updated from PSP. So my question is:
    Does changes in "Network Connections" on nodes in "Pause" mode affect other nodes in the cluster?
    The network are listed as "Up" during Pause mode, so the only thing I could think of is that during  PSPs driver/software update, NICs on node 07 and 08 were going down and up differently somehow making Node 02 fail.
    So now during maintenance (Vendor driver/software/firmware updates, not MS Patches) I first put the node in "Pause" mode then I stop cluster service, (and change it to disabled) making sure nothing can affect the cluster.

  • Any known software conflicts with Leopard

    I am really frustrated. I've been an exclusive mac user since 87. I have had major problems with leopard that remind me of the pre-OSX days. Apps hanging, crashing, not shutting down (and I'm talking Apple apps like Safari). My computer hangs on shut down while Updating Boot Caches (I've let the thing run over night hoping I was just being impatient.). I have even had some kernel panics. I've run disk utility, TechTool Pro, and DiskWarrior. When I run these apps, some times they find problems and sometimes they don't. The hardware checks are okay. I have done a clean install of Leopard. And of course, everything is up to date. I have even had trouble syncing with dotmac with the syncs getting out of sync and constantly asking me which one I want to keep.
    I never, ever had these problems with Tiger.
    My final guess is that maybe there is some rouge piece of software that doesn't work well with Tiger.
    Is there a list.
    Any help?

    What you did was an erase and install.
    Check with each application vendor for software compatibility. The way you can tell if an application is compatible is if the actual update is said to be compatible.
    I.e, when it says:
    10.4.x and above means 10.4.0 and 10.4.1 compatible.
    10.4.x and 10.5.x and above it means 10.4.0 - 10.4.11, and 10.5.0, and 10.5.1 compatible. No assurance though exists for Intel compatibility, unless it says Application Universal in the Finder menu -> Get Info information about the application. Rosetta applications are typically PowerPC compatible, with dependence on PowerPC drivers and may not always work with Intel Macs.
    10.4.x and 10.5.0 to 10.5.2 it means it is compatible with the most recent release. The Intel Mac disclaimer applies here as well.
    10.4.x and 10.5.0 to 10.5.2 PowerPC and Universal means it will work with PowerPC and Intel Macs running Tiger and Leopard to present day.
    10.3.x and above does not mean 10.4.x compatible, nor does it mean 10.5.x compatible. There are some exceptions if the software was developed within the framework of Rosetta.

    you can link documents to purchase order item or purchase requisition then obviously this will be displayed in vendor invoice.
    Best practice is to use SAP DMS standard functions. Don't go to link with vendor invoice.Anyhow MIRO and MIGO transaction are
    depeandent on purchase requisition.I hope this will resolve your query and is a best practice.

  • Creating Master Image Best Practices

    Greetings!
    Soon, I will be sending a master disk to a fulfillment company for mass replication.
    I have already sold about 350 copies of my DVD (produced with Encore), which I burn on my computer (Alienware, Windows 7), and then package and ship to my customers.

    I've had one guys who said it "skipped really bad", I've had a couple customers who get an "invalid or unknown file" error when they tried to play it on a DVD player, and one guy who couldn't play on a computer because of a "missing DVD decoder".
    4 or 5 errors out of 350 isn't bad, but I'm wondering if there's anything I need to know, in order to make my NTSC DVD as universally viewable as possible?
    I know not to exceed an 8mb/s bitrate, but other than that, is there anything I should know or do?

    I did indeed use Taiyo-Yudens. Since I bought 500 blanks, I got a good price on solid media.
    I'm mostly wondering if there's a software 'best practice' I need to follow, since my fulfillment center will be handling most of the heavy lifting with the hardware and media.

  • I want to try the trial software but the serial number they emailed me Aperture said is invalid.

    I tried a few times. Getting a hold of anyone to send me a valid serial number to try this software is practically impossible. What do I do?

    Usually that kind of error is due to typos caused by easily mixed-up characters or "shift lock" locked and wrong capitalization; check for similar characters, like "1" and "I", or "l"; or "O" and "0". The safest way to enter the serial correctly is by copying it from the mail and pasting it directly into the password field.

    assignment of purchasing group to vendors is not best practice and never saw it anywhere
    the field in LFM1 (vendor master purchasing data view) is only taken into account if you did not assign a purchasing group to the material master.
    the process of procurement is starting with demand for a material, the requisition has already to go to a purchasing group before the purchasing group does the source determination.
    It could only be different if you have fixed sources per material and purchasing groups in the vendor master instead of the material master, then the source determination could happen in the MRP run.
    If you never maintained in purchasing group in a vendor master, then you can only analyze existing PO to find a link between purchasing group and vendor.
    One way to analyze this in SAP would be transaction TAANA.
    Just click the execute button in TAANA, enter EKKO table and click the multiple selection for the variant field. In next screen click the ad-hoc variant button.
    In the next screen select the fields purchasing group and vendor number and purchasing group, then click continue and execute your selection.
    You will get a list with any vendor/purchasing group combination you ever had in a PO

    I didn't purchase any apps today, free or paid until the end of the night when I finally broke down to buy Tapatalk.  When I tried to buy it said I did not have enough credit for the $2.99 purchase.  I couldn't see much on my iPhone so I hopped on my computer.
    I logged in to iTunes it showed the following purchases made this morning at 09:06 AM:

    I was able to report a problem on the three songs but apparently Apple does not feel it necessary to provide a conduit for fraudulent app purchases.
    I have never hear of this "Global War", I'm also not sure why I would have downloaded these two versions and immediately purchased "Honor Points" for them.  I hope this developer is shut down for this shady practice.  I do not have an easy password to guess but I will change it anyway.
    Thankfully I only had a $15 gift card loaded on my iTunes account and not my credit card.
    I am an IT professional and am very cautious about what software I install on the computers I use and don't fall for phishing scams.
    I do not believe my password was used in this purchase and am seriously questioning the security of iTunes.
    Please Apple make this right and thoroughly investigate this.  If I can't trust you I will no longer be a customer.

    The problem may not be Apple or iTunes but with Addmired, Inc.  The company which created those games.  The games are loaded with hackers, subject players to high levels of harassment, threats, and profanity from other players and yet, there is NO support from Addmired in regards to helping players who try to report the harassment or ask for help.
    I have been unable to play any of the games by Addmired, (iMob, Global War, Original Gangstaz) due to constant harassment from hackers who located me after I responded to a request for help from another member of my 'gang/mob'.  Now, because I was stupid enough to try and help someone - I am being bombarded by threats, harassment, profanity laced messages and unable to even play the game because an obvious hacker using a jailbroken iphone / ipod attacks me again, and again, and again so that I can't play the game.
    Addmired needs to be addressed, if they are going to charge players for a 'free' game where you pretty much have to buy the additional points (street cred, respect.. whatever they want to call it) then the company has a responsiblity to it's customers to provide support against harassment in the games yet they do not!  I have tried for weeks to get help from this company, sending emails to them through the contact form on their website with no response, and no action taken against the individuals harassing me.

  • Carrier in SAP: Is it worth learning MDM?

    Looking for a carrier guidance please let me know your thoughts.
    I'm a J2EE Developer specializing in  Content Management systems/Portals with about 8 years of experience.
    Looking for learning new skills specifically learning vendor(canned) applications which would also require J2EE Experience so that i can use all my J2EE experience and as well learn new applications to better position myself in the consulting market.:-)
    Started looking at the SAP Netweaver Technology and all the products stacked against key areas of the Netweaver Architecture. Lack of my experience in SAP landscape made me get confused on what product to pick and learn to position myself in and also was not sure about whether one would really get any jobs after going through all the learning with no experience in that product.
    So wanted to reach out to all of you and see what you guys think and suggest after reading through my thoughts and confusion.
    Getting into emerging technologies in SAP made more sense since there will be opportunities for people with less or no experience in sap landscape :(.
    Do you guys think it is worth learning and planning a carrier in MDM?
    How does the feature look for SAP MDM?
    How should one go about planning to get to the MDM world. What other skills one should know that would help ?

    Hi Rajesh,
    MDM is truly a new way of solving old data management problems, Morris said. Traditional information architecture focuses on the infrastructure and design of systems in a company, and can include practices like synchronizing data around a hub. These architecture approaches are much more monolithic than MDM. Applied MDM, which includes data governance techniques, along with MDM infrastructure tools, represents a more flexible way of approaching the problem.
    Andrew White, research director at Stamford, Conn.-based Gartner Inc., agrees that MDM is a legitimate solution for data management difficulties.
    "Information architecture is lost," White said. "We're realizing that we need a different kind of governance model."
    MDM is "80% old stuff and 20% new stuff," White said. The "old stuff" is technology expanded from product information management and CDI tools, as well as some of the data definition concepts of metadata management. The "new stuff" is a major emphasis on data governance and new MDM tools, which are different from anything the industry has seen before, White said.
    MDM software, from companies like IBM, Kalido and others, acts as middleware, in essence giving systems a commonplace to look for approved data definitions. White describes this MDM software as an "intermediate tier between physical data and the consumption of that data." Combining software and data governance best practices, MDM is an innovative approach to solving data management problems, he said.
    It's only a matter of time before companies start to adopt MDM, White said. The coming year will be one of awareness, and the peak of spending will come in two to three years, he predicts.
    Between emerging technologies like SOA and RFID requiring consistent data definitions and motivators like heavy-handed fines for inaccurate reporting and non-compliance, analysts like Morris and White feel that MDM is a critical component to many business initiatives.
    Master data management is not a technology market, but a business capability," said Rob Karel, principal analyst with Cambridge, Mass.-based Forrester Research Inc. "All of the vendors branding themselves as an MDM solution, I liken to comparing apples and Volkswagens. They're all very different pieces of the larger complex technology puzzle that's required to solve the master data management capability."
    Vendors from across the IT landscape emerged in force in the last few months, joining such players as IBM, SAP and Burlington, Mass.-based Kalido Inc. in announcing MDM products. Dayton, Ohio-based Teradata partnered with Dallas-based i2 Technologies Inc. for its new Teradata MDM platform. Other announcements amounted to repositioning and re-branding. Product information management (PIM) vendor TIBCO Software Inc., based in Palo Alto, Calif., announced its Collaborative Information Manager MDM application. Customer data integration (CDI) players made their move as well. Redwood City, Calif.-based Purisma Inc. updated and re-named its "data hub," and San Mateo, Calif.-based Siperian Inc. emerged with a new "customer-centric MDM" hub. Other pure-play vendors and big players alike have scrambled to use MDM label.
    Of course, every vendor has a slightly different take, and the relative infancy of the MDM discipline makes product comparisons tough. Buyers should be wary of any vendor that claims to solve MDM problems with just one tool -- an impossible feat, Gartner and Forrester analysts agreed.
    Forrester: Evaluate your MDM ecosystem
    Karel introduced the concept of an "MDM ecosystem audit guide," a tool intended to help companies identify technology components that should be part of their data supply chain.
    "MDM is a capability which will cross multiple technology platforms," Karel said, "because information is being captured, managed and consumed across many platforms."
    An MDM capability may include processes and technologies such as data governance and stewardship, data quality management, integration tools, service-oriented architectures -- as well as systems that help manage master data definitions. Ultimately, successful MDM will be achieved by combining a wide variety of technologies and applications that create, manage and consume master data. Some capabilities might already exist in a company, Karel said. In fact, he added, companies could conceivably manage master data with no tools bearing the MDM label at all.
    "If you knit together some of these disparate tools [that you already have] with custom code and random wrappers, you can create an MDM solution for your company -- it just won't be pretty," Karel said. "The vendors that will be successful are the ones that [can] create a more seamless administrative experience and the ones that allow you to leverage your existing investments."
    No vendors really fit that description today, though some, such as IBM, are further along than others, Karel said. And there are more mature sub-segments of MDM, namely CDI or PIM, with vendors that have successfully addressed the problems of managing a specific kind of data entity. But, he said, a true MDM capability should address multiple kinds of data entities -- not just customer or product -- and that's where the complexity comes in.
    Gartner: Consider the MDM continuum
    The Gartner study placed vendors on an "MDM continuum," according to Andrew White, study co-author and research vice president with the Stamford, Conn.-based analyst firm. The continuum looks like a horizontal line, with "MDM niche" vendors on the left, "MDM generalists" on the right, and infrastructure giants Oracle and SAP in the middle.
    The niche vendors on the extreme left of the continuum solve complex problems in certain industries or domains, White explained. These products can handle the complexities of very specific kinds of entities, such as customer or product data. They can potentially manage thousands of attributes and hundreds of hierarchies and are suited for operational purposes. This is where PIM and CDI vendors fit in, he said. Gartner placed IBM, Siperian and Wayne, Penn.-based PIM vendor FullTilt Solutions Inc. on this end of the continuum.
    Products that appear closer to right side come from generalists and help companies get a single view of many different data entities, White said. These products are probably more appropriate for analytics and business intelligence uses. Generalists' products handle many different kinds of entities with relatively low complexity -- for example, labeling many master data objects with a low number (say, five to 25) of attributes. Kalido; Hackensack, N.J.-based Data Foundations Inc.; and Paris-based Orchestra Networks appear on this end of the continuum.
    The study was specifically presented as a continuum, not a ranking, White said. Like all IT programs, the selected MDM tool should fit a company's specific problem, and legacy vendors might not always be the best choice, he cautioned.
    "Vendors are making hay with [MDM]. They're all calling themselves MDM vendors," White said. "Customers have to be very careful. It's not that one MDM vendor is better. It's really about form fitting function. Where is your business? What is your particular problem of the day, and what will your problem be next year? Then figure out which data is most important, and look at that part of the continuum."

  • Important! Can IDS 4.1x Send event messages to a syslog server??

    I know IDS event view and MC can pull the IDS event from IDS sensors and IDSM. But our company is think to collect all the security message in a syslog server. firewall can send syslog to this server. But for IDS and IDSM 4.1, I can't find a way to send the IDS event to syslog server. Is there any way to do that????

    You comment is an easy statement to make, but IMHO unfair.
    If you look at the Cisco IDS/IPS product line's history, you'll realize that the current RDEP/SDEE communications model is infinitely more secure, while remaining easy to use, than any other method one could propose.
    Initially, the sensors pushed events to the centrally monitoring console via UDP (port 45000), with most of the data in the clear (the source and destination IP address were obfuscated). This is obviously not very safe because, even though the communications were pseudo connection-oriented due to checking by the application daemons at each end, it is possible to intercept and modify the IDS alert to inject false data.
    This same problem exists with stock syslog, since everything goes on the wire as a UDP packet and there is no data obfuscation or encryption what so ever.
    The distinct advantage to the current communications model is the fact that RDEP/SDEE use cryptography to protect your IDS/IPS alerts, and that is also uses a standards-based structure in XML-based forms to pass the data.
    Finally, since Cisco has released an SDK for RDEP/SDEE, and many 3rd party vendors have software that can act as RDEP/SDEE clients, I disagree that you’re stuck with the CiscoWorks-based VMS suite. Besides, you only have to buy the suite if you need to manage more than 5 sensors, but I digress...
