Ventilation and dual processor upgrades

Hi to all,
I recently decided to change the ventilation on my powermac G4 dual 1ghz MDD. I'm getting tired of its noisiness.
Doing a little research i fell on some dual processor upgrades and thought i could do both.
Has anybody tried Gigadesigns processor upgrades?
<www.gigadesigns.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=4>
If so, are you happy with it? is it worth it? Does it help for the noise?
I use my G4 for intensive editing(FCP,studio pro, After effects) and would enjoy a G5. But while i'm waiting for that to be possible, would it be worth patching up the G4?
Thank you very much for your feedback..
tee.

sorry dude. the MDD G4's cannot, technically, use any upgrade processors...
unless you found someone willing to sell you their dual 1.42GHz G4 dual module. or your could whip out your soldering gun do a little OC'ing.
for cooling though--->
there is a nifty cooling solution you can implement if your MDD is out of warranty. Verax, its out of Germany. they have some nice cooling setups for MDD. One is for the giant 120mm system fan, the other listed below is for
the dual CPUs.
here is a link-->
http://www.verax.de/verax.php?template=catalog_entry&entryid=44
I've read about these Verax coolers once before back when I first got my G4 MDD, because many of the MDD mdoels were noisy as heck, and dubbed the
"Windtunnel Mac."
On a side note, i even read about people encasing their G4 MDD inside of noise proof boxes and such.

  • XP and dual processors

    My system:
MSI K7D Master board, 512M 2100 RAM(ECC, Registered), dual 2100+ AMD processors, 60G HD Western Digital, Soundblaster Audigy 2 platinum, 50x sony CD-ROM, ATI 9000 Pro 128M video card, 500W power supply, Linksys 10/100 NIC, 5 port USB 2.0 card, Windows XP Pro SP1
Under device Manager it shows 2 processors but it seems as if it is only seeing one in terms of the OS usage of them. Like I said above I am using the Pro edition, and from my understanding it supports dual cpu's, dont know what going on, if anyone has any ideas shoot them over. Thanks a lot.

It shows "Processors" then under that snap-in it shows both AMD processors in the device manager. I was just curious if there is a way to make sure it is using both of them. If someone can post a screenshot of a computers  "task manager" with the "preformance tab in the foreground" with a single processor that would help. I just want to check something. In the task manager i only see one graph when kernel timing is turned off.
Or if anyone has any other way to test, view if a computer running XP pro is using both processors that would be great too.

  • Thinkstation C30 Dual processor upgrade

I have a Thinkstation C30 1095 with a Xeon E5-2630 Sandy Bridge revision C2. There are numerous engineering sample E5-2630's with revision C0 on a popular auction site for far better prices than a new one. I'd like to drop one in as a second processor, it should work because it meets all the same specs, and the revision isn't relevent. Does anyone know if the 30 series supports these? I'm sure Lenovo offically doesn't, but I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with this.

Mixing CPUs with different stepping levels in the same system is a bad idea.  I'm not even 100% certain the system would boot when doing so, though I can't say I've ever tried it.
There's a reason those parts are labeled engineering samples as they don't contain all the silicon fixes that production level parts do.   In order for a CPU to work with the BIOS, BIOS needs to include microcode patches that go along with the specific CPU(s) you're trying to use.  There's a solid chance that the microccode updates for older (engineering sample level) CPUs have been removed from production BIOS to save space on the BIOS SPI part.  So no guarantee it would work with your BIOS.
I'd be very leary of buying ES level parts off auction sites for many reasons, including legal reasons.

  • One Image for dual and single processor G5 machines

I'm working in a lab that has both single and dual processors G5 machines. There is only one image for both machines and I suspect that we have a few bugs with the single processor machines because of this. Has anyone else used one image for both single and dual processors? Have there been problems. I'm wondering if it is necessary to create two separate images.
    mdinger

There is not difference in the images, but you might have problems with the single G5 machines and 10.4. Did you do the firmware upgrade?
I have ~10 single G5 and 25 dual D5 machines netinstalled from one image without trouble.

  • Processor upgrades for PowerMacG4

I have recently get a PowerMac G4 dual processor tower because it was the only way to operate my adc apple cinema HD display correctly. The machine is about 6 years old now and works perfectly. In order to achieve good performance in the future (i'm thinkin to switch to Leopard) I'm considering upgrading my processors, video card and slave disk space.
Does someone can tell me truth about does dual processors upgrades offered by Newertech (2x7448 PPc particulary), Gigadesgin and Sonnet? Does it worth the price (up to 700$ in some case if you want top clocked models) configuring that I want enough power to expect to: -record multitrack audio with Logic or Pro TOOL; - to use efficiently guitar rig 3 - play some new games and finally keep in my studio this quite cool looking silver tower in the standards some years more. Does it exists any risk to install those upgrades?

  • Best dual processor G4???

    Howdy all...
I'm looking to buy a used G4, and I'm wondering which variation(s) to look for, or if there are any to avoid.
I'm upgrading on a budget, from a Biege 333mhz G3MT. I'll be photo processing in Photoshop, doing graphic work in Illustrator, and all the usual e-mail/web stuff too. I see a number of ebay auctions that look reasonable...but I'm not to familiar with the G4 models. I'd love to snag a new G5...but the budget says no way.
    Thanks for any advice.
    Kenn
    Biege 333mh G3 MT, PB3400   Mac OS 9.1.x

The Adobe products are fine with Panther. That is what I use.
For quite a while in 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, and part of 10.3 I was using Illustrator 8 and Photoshop 5.5 in Classic. Last spring I upgraded to the Creative Suite which is X only. They all worked fine. If you work with fonts then you are going to be in for some education so please read Kurt Lang's masterpiece about fonts with X.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=122011&tstart=0
It is very easy to get yourself messed up with fonts. For me the transition was fairly painless since I had been using Font Reserve in 9 and they were very good about updating for X. Faster than Extensis(Suitcase) who bought them. They are both owned by Extensis now.
When I was migrating to X I frequently booted into 9 because it was familiar. This last year I booted into 9 one time. I still keep a few old macs for running peripherals that don't play well with X but my daily work mac is the one on my profile below.
In general, the AGP macs are the most upgradeable macs out there. While Apple was in it's funk with new products not many changes were made and it was easy for cpu upgrades to address a lot of macs. Starting with the mirror doors motherboards were frequently changed and as an engineer at Giga Design told me, they were pretty fast to begin with. So to answer your question, yes, in general single processor macs should be able to take a dual processor upgrade. If you purchase one of the older cpu upgrades it may be that they were intended for Quicksilvers that were dual to start with but most of the newer upgrades have overcome that issue.
But, and I'm going to make an assumption here, you don't impress me as a tinkerer on computers. By that I mean, getting a medium speed upgrade, use it for a few months, sell it for a faster card for a few months, sell that one, get a dual, etc.. I would get a fairly fast upgrade (say 1gz. or so) get used to X and save your money for a newer mac. It will have built in everything, faster bus (which you can't upgrade), faster memory, etc.
I started out using X on an old 9600 with a single g4 450 upgrade card. It worked fine through 10.2. The gui of X is a processor hog so resizing windows, opening a folder, and new windows was slow but it did Photoshop filters was just as fast in X as it was in 9. It just felt slow. I have had my dual 867 for 2 years and could sell it for 2/3 of what I paid for it.
Go middle of the road on the upgrades (which is cheaper), and when it is unbearably slow, get a newer mac. That's what I would do.

  • What's the deal with dual processors???

The whole dual processor thing has been bugging me for some time now. If I have a dual 500mhz processor, is it the same as a 1.0ghz processor, worse than one, better than one?! Are there other factors at play? In my limited scope, if you had a dual 500, 533, whatever, it would be the same as a single 1.0ghz - and yet these dual processors are priced much cheaper. I really am at a loss as to how computers do their processing, and how to compare single processor G4's and dual processor G4's when making a purchase.
    Insight would be greatly appreciated!

And you shouldn't forget, the future is multiprocessors. There is a limit to miniturization, and the solution seems to be multiplication. So operating systems and applications are increasingly going to be multiprocessor-aware. Maybe a perfect example is the upcoming MacOS release, Snowleopard. Apparently, there will be almost no cosmetic changes. The changes will essentially be 'under-the-hood'. And you can bet, that some of those changes will be increased efficiency with respect to multiple processors.
So what's the deal with airplane peanu...err, dual processors?
The advantage, theoretically is, having more workers to do the work. Your 1ghz processor is like a worker who can lift 100kg, and your 500mhz are like workers who can lift 50kg each.
So where's the advantage? If you have a farm with 40 kg hay bales in the field that you need to pick up, your better off with two workers than one right? Or 8 workers in the case of a 8-core MacPro. So an multiprocessor-aware operating system, doles out the work much more efficiently, spreading the tasks around, or spreading a single task around in pieces (if the app is so written).
You've heard of render farms? The multiple computers used to render the frames of animated movies? Its the same principle. Having computer 1 render the first 1000 frames and computer 2 the next, the project gets done within a lifetime. If they had had only one computer, ToyStory would still not be finished.
Its the future. Just wait till the end of this year for example. Nehalem chips will be sporting even more processors.

  • 2 2.66 Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor upgrade

I have a question about my Mac Pro.I don't know if you can answer it or point me in the right direction. I have a 2006 Mac Pro 2+2.66Ghz. Dual-Core Intel Xeon with 8 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 FB-DIMM Ram.What types of upgrades can I do to make this a faster machine? Processor upgrade? or should I just by a new Mac Pro?

Selling the old one and buying a new one is the easiest way.
Macs tend to keep a much higher value then PC.

  • Why is it that the new macbook pro processor upgrade option only offers up to 2.8 Ghz with Intel Dual Core i7, when back in Sep 12 I bought a 2.9 Ghz Intel Dual Core i7 Macbook, is the new one tuned to go much faster anyway?

Why is it that the new Macbook Pro processor upgrade option only offers up to 2.8 Ghz boosting to 3.3 Ghz with Intel Dual Core i7, when back in Sep 12 I bought a 2.9 Ghz boosting to 3.6 Ghz Intel Dual Core i7 Macbook, is the new one tuned somehow to go much faster anyway, or will the new one be slower in fact?  Or does the solid state drive compensate for the lack of increased processor capacity?

The CPU's come from different Intel 'families'.  The older ones are 'Ivy Bridge' and the newer ones are 'Haswell'.  Numbers alone will not determine the efficiency of  CPU.
    Ciao.

  • Leopard and G4 dual processor

I'm hoping this is a no-brainer for the more tech savvy.
    I have a G4 with dual 450 mb processors.
Will this meet the minimum requirements (867MHz or faster) for Leopard?
    Thanks,
    Vince

    Hi
Unfortunately owners of dual 800MHz Quicksilvers and dual 533MHz Digital Audios seem to have been left in the lurch slightly. Perhaps Apple thought the number of people affected are likely to be small.
I'm sure ways to get around it will emerge over the next few days though. The following are either known to work or still seem possibilities:
Installing using FireWire target disk mode and a Mac that meets the requirements.
Installing by temporarily moving the hard drive to another Mac, a similar model, that meets the requirements.
Buying a third party processor upgrade (or a pulled Apple CPU daughter card).
Hacking the installer or using a third party utility similar to XPostFacto.

  • Equium P200-1ED and processor upgrade

    Hi
I have installed an 64GB SSD and installed Windows 7 with user and program data folders on an SD card installed as USB drive through the Expresscard slot. I have also put in 4GB of RAM
It is still slow browsing the web even through wired Ethernet. So I am considering upgrading the processors as the bottle neck appears to be definitely on the processor which is an Intel Dual T2310 @1.46 GHz.
So the question is what is the next possible processor upgrade?
    Thanks

On the question of processor upgrade:
I have already upgraded the BIOS and the Intel Chip set driver.
The problem is that this model is discontinued and I can't find much information on it.
I got this old Lap Top for free, I have got an 64GB SSD for 25, 64GB SD and express-card adaptor 30 and the 2X2GB RAM for 19.00. So if a new processor can make it fast enough then it will be worth another $20-$40 expense considering that I saw a used one advertised on Amazon for 245.00.
I know that it can support T3700 with L4 cache. Considering that a 2.GH can be bought for around $20.00. I though I might as well see if it can support something even faster how much that is.
How ever I get the the your point but I just don't know what is slowing this machine down.
When I change tab or reload a form it takes time before I can see the response to the keyboard input.
I have checked the page faults but I don't see anything there.
I wonder if I change to no paging, now that I have and SSD in there. So, any ideas would be welcome.
I doubt the network connection is a problem because I have fast broadband and I have tested it wired and wireless and as I said, I have a desktop running the same OS with 64BG SSD and 4GB RAM and it is a hell of a lot faster but that one has a quad Intel processor. The only other difference is that on the desktop the user folders are not moved to another drive but that is because I don't have and SD slot on the other one and surely SD is a lot faster than HHD.
So, what else could be holding it back? Feed backs would be appreciated.

  • Powermac G5 processor upgrade dual 1.8 to dual 2.0

I've got 2 G5 towers I bought cheap from eBay and CL. One is a dual 1.8 and the other a dual 2.0. It's a long story but essentially the dual 2.0 has been gutted. I'm wondering if I could simply remove the dual 1.8 processors and replace them with the dual 2.0 processors? I figure I might as well have 1 machine optimized. Would there be any issues with the logic board or power supply with the processor upgrade?

If one of the computers does run I'd leave it as is. There is nothing to gain going from 1.8 to 2.0 GHz cpu.

  • Graphics Card for Motion 4, RAM and processor upgrade

I am using a dual quad-core Mac Pro with 8GB DDR2 667MHz RAM for FCP and Motion. I have a NVIDIA Quadro FX card which does not work with Motion. Any suggestions on the card? I am looking into ATI 4870. Also, would like to put in some more RAM..any suggestion? I am looking at products on www.crucial.com
Also, does putting two graphics cards help at all?
Considering processor upgrades..will it be worth it?
Thanks in advance for your responses and time.

Also, does putting two graphics cards help at all?
No, unless you need more than two displays.
Considering processor upgrades..will it be worth it?
    No.

  • Single or Dual Processors for Tuxedo and/or weblogic 8.1?

We run Tools 8.44 and 8.20 and double checking to see if either Weblogic (8.1) or Tuxedo (8.1) would utilize a dual processor environment? We run these on Windows 2003 Server.
    Appreciate inisght.

Yep its all in the cache, and the L3 makes all the difference.
I remember when I was shopping for my upgrade, Gigadesign had two different models of CPU's, the (brand new at the time) single and dual 7447's which went up to a dual 1.8 and the older pre-Freescale models (cant remember the model number maybe it was indeed the 7455B??) that maxed out with a dual 1.4..
I remember reading benchmarks (and quite a bit at XLR8yourmac.com) about the older dual 1.4's being on about the same level as the dual 1.6 and 1.7 7447 cpus.. This was all down to the 1.4 having L3 cache on each cpu. The 7447 had double the L2 like the 7448 but no L3.. I didnt really care much since they were relatively the same benchmark, but I went with the dual 1.7 7447 anyways just because the numbers were higher..
And funny enough, the CPU never ran stable at 1.7, my Mac would crash and kernel panic left and right. I couldnt get any response back from their tech support (I think it was one guy that ran the whole thing) about adjusting the voltage on it, so it spent its entire lifetime in my G4 as a dual 1.67. Not too big of a difference but I couldve saved some money just flat out buying a 1.6 instead of the 1.7, and wouldve saved even more had I just listened and bought the dual 1.4 with L3...
John with a G4 - no problem at all hehe! Dont get me wrong I loved my G4 and it served me well for just about 10 years before it 'died' on me.. But after getting the late-2005 dual core G5 man oh man I wish I wouldve done it waaaaaaaaaay sooner!
