Verbose mode: highlighted text ?

I have had this happen a few times a while back.
In verbose mode while booting up, A section of text scrolling up the screen abruptly changes from white text on black background to black text on white background.
Kind of like a printer abruptly changing color in the middle of the page. The rest of the text stays the same color, just the new text changes.
I find it kind of unsettling, kind of like someone has used a white highlighter to emphasize the system text.
After a few lines, it reverts back to producing white text/black background, and I have this section of black on white slowly scrolling up the screen.
Has anyone else run into this, or does anyone know of the significance of the "highlighted" text ?
TIA
Kevin

I like watching it booting in verbose better than I like watching a spinning gear.....
I rarely ever reboot this machine, as it crunches Rosetta & Seti 24/7/365.
My record uptime is 57 days (only because Florida Power & Light can't keep consistent power going). If I got an Uninterruptable Power Supply, I'd probably never ever have to reboot.

  • Highlight text in full screen mode

    Hi,
Is it possible to use the highlight text and underline functions while I'm in full screen mode? It'd be really helpful.
    Thanks.

The keyboard shortcut (U) for highlighting doesn't work when you switch to full screen Acrobat switches to the article reading tool. You do not seem to be able to switch to the select tool so you can highlight.

  • Normal Startup Messages (System.log; Intel Verbose Mode)?

Over this past weekend, I wanted to test the backup I had for my 24" iMac. I had always used Apple's Backup program that comes with .Mac when I had my PowerBook, and never tested it. This was bad, because it didn't work when I actually needed it.
I also suspected there might be something slightly wrong with my iMac, so equipped with about 4 hours and my install DVDs i went to work.
The only thing I've done so far is get all the Apple updates and setup my iChat account. I changed to boot in verbose mode, and found that the eery messages that scared me prior to doing my reinstallation of OS X (I zeroed the drive, then did a full install) were still there.
    Here is my entire System.log:

The lines that concern me are the ones bolded at the top of System.log
The other thing that is a bit unnerving to me is that when I have it set to boot in verbose mode, and then restart the computer, I get a screen that looks out of place. It is a box with a dark background in the center of the screen with text in there, and then it quickly switches to full screen verbose mode. The first line of full screen verbose mode (which is what I'm used to since I always used verbose mode on my PowerBook) is this one:
Jan 30 09:23:08 localhost kernel[0]: hi mem tramps at 0xffe00000
In the centered text, it mentions something about "loading drivers" followed by many lines of periods. It is only up for about 5 seconds, and then switches to full screen verbose mode. Is that centered window for verbose mode new to intel Macs? I never recall seeing it on my PowerBook.
When i googled around for the "hi mem tramps" message, i found it might be linked to bad ram. I used memtest and did 3 passes to check the ram, and it found no errors.
Are these messages in System.log normal?
    Thanks!

    Hi, Mike.
First, please don't use the "scatter gun" or "post everywhere" approach. I see you've also post the same question here. I appreciate your urgent desire for help, but it would be very annoying to anyone answering questions here to spend time researching your question in one post, only to find it already answered in another place where it was also posted. The "scatter gun" approach is a good way to get all your future posts ignored.
According to what I read in the second post of this topic on another forum, I suspect you may have a Startup Item that's causing the highlighted messages to be written to system.log. Perhaps some PowerPC code you may have migrated over to your Intel-based Mac if you used the Setup / Migration Assistant to move to the new Mac from a pervious Mac.
There have been numerous posts about the tfp: failed on 0 message, which can be seen in this search of the Discussions. However, I suspect the explanation I've cited above fits your situation.
If an errant Startup Item is the cause, my "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
As to hi mem tramps…, that may be normal. If you read this item and click on the link for dmesg you'll see a typical output someone else posted as, I suspect, an example of "normal."
    Good luck!

  • Highlighting text in JTextPane

Hi all, (sorry if this is similar post from others).
I'm trying to highlight text from when it is selected by the mouse, I want it to work by first I click a button to go in "text highlighting mode" then I select the text by pressing the mouse at the start of the selection and then releasing it - voila highlighted text..

  • IMac won't boot up. Stuck in "verbose mode" ??

I've had this problem on and off for a few weeks now. I either restart my iMac after installing some new software-or for other reason- and my computer won't boot up. Sometimes it will stay at the white screen with the grey apple for hours if I leave it there. I've tried all the tricks with key commands. I even reinstalled my software, which worked, but now its happening again. Today, I restarted my iMac, and the same thing is happening, except sometimes it will go into what I've heard called- "verbose mode." The screen is black and white command text appears in the upper left hand corner. Here are some examples of what appears...
    No Airport driver found.
    Exited abnormally. Bad system call.
    Repawning too quickly! throttling
10 more failures without living at least 60 seconds will cause job removal.
    Will restart in 10 seconds.
(this will continue until it has restarted and failed 10 times. After this is done, it will display one of the following...)
    too many failures in succesion
    OR
local:/root# (continuously flashes on the screen)
    OR
localhost:/ I have no name!# AppleYukon- eno link active, 100-Mbit, full duplex, flow control disabled.
I really don't know what to do. I'm really frustrated with my iMac. I've had to replaced a dead hard drive within the 6 months of my purchase, and now it is acting crappy again.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

I tried using the disk utility on the grey disks, but
they can't repair the error on my HD. I can't restore
the original software from the disks either... there
is an error when I try.
No, you can't restore while the current OS is in place, due to the fact that your 10.4.8 isn't compatible with the older version (10.4.4) that's on the install DVDs. Once a Mac OS is in place, it can only be upgraded, not downgraded. You'll have to choose either:
to "Archive & Install" which would set aside your current system unerased until the new installation is completed and your current settings are transferred over - at which point you can erase the archived OS.
to entirely erase and reformat the HDD, then install a fresh OS.
Use the install disc's version of Disk Utility to perform either. First, though, you probably need to do a PRAM reset - that often clears things up so that you won't get an error message.
    To reset the PRAM:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following four keys on the keyboard: Command (Apple logo), option, P, and R. You will need to hold these four keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Start up the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination after the startup chord sounds, but before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold all four keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup chord for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.

  • Can't print highlighted text on pdf's in Preview

I had printing problems with my office printer Canon IR series. the Canon update UFR II V 2.24 fixed this but brought a new problem.
    I can't print annotated pdf's correctly.
Any highlighted text is covered with a full colour bar with no text visible under it. It just covers the text.
Is there a fast way of printing with no annotations or of fixing this problem and just print the highlights correctly?!
    Thanks

Just tested this to the iR C3380i using the UFR2 v2.24 and can replicate the symptom. I found that if you change the Graphics Mode from UFR2 to Raster, the text will print. To get to this setting, select to print with the UFR2 driver and change to the Quality menu. Then select Quality Setting button to show the Quality Settings pane. Here you will see the Raster Mode setting. Select and OK the change and now you can print the annotated PDF.
You will probably note that this workaround was the same solution to the Graphics Mode message that appeared with the previous version of the UFR2 driver with the 10.6.7 update. The v2.24 driver stopped this message from appearing but this latest symptom would suggest there is still something not completely right with this new driver, although I seem to remember there being issues with the older driver on earlier versions of 10.6 and the Graphics Mode setting was the only solution.

  • Vim keeps freezing and I cannot highlight text with my mouse

title says it all.  Vim will freeze on me randomly.  I was having X issues earlier but stopped using the nvidia driver and that seemed to fix that, but now Vim freezes.  I'll be in Insert mode and it simply will not accept any of my keystrokes or attempts to esc to command mode.
Eventually it'll unfreeze and then process all the keys I pressed while it was frozen (about 1-2 minutes later).
The only thing going on in my .vimrc is a color scheme.  This happens in urxvt, in an ssh shell, and in screen.
And for some reason I can't used my mouse to highlight text in vim either in all the shells previously listed.

Try resetting the SMC and PRAM.

System.setProperty("java.protocol.handler.pkgs","com.sun.net.ssl.internal.www.protocol");You don't need that unless you're running 1.3 or earlier.

TrustManager[] trustAllCerts = new TrustManager[]{You don't need this thing at all unless you like (a) code that doesn't implement its specification correctly and (b) insecure code. If your truststore doesn't trust the server certificate, that's the server's problem. Get them to fix it, by getting their certificate signed by a recognized CA.
HostnameVerifier hv = new HostnameVerifier()Much the same remarks. This piece of code is insecure and it just addresses a problem with the server certificate. Get the problem fixed.
Otherwise in both cases you may as well not be using HTTPS at all - there is no security.

urlCon.setInstanceFollowRedirects(true); If you have that you don't need the global setFollowRedirects call above, so you should remove it.

  • Boots up almost like verbose mode.

I have an Intel iMac that seems to work fine, that we have reinstalled Leopard on several times, but everytime we startup the machine, I get a black screen with some white text (almost like it was starting up in verbose mode) then it goes away and goes to the login screen. Then when I shutdown, it logs me off, and then goes back to the black screen/white text, and shuts down. Basically I'm not getting the grey screen with the gear, but instead I'm being shown how the computer is booting up, how do I get rid of this?

Restart the computer with the Option, Command, P, and R keys held down, and release the keys when you hear the second startup chime.

it seems, that this one is not a property of the condition, it is a preference:
    myDoc.conditionalTextPreferences.showConditionIndicators = ConditionIndicatorMode.SHOW_AND_PRINT_INDICATORS;

  • I cannot highlight text

My HP PhotoSmart 7525 printer came with limited Acrobat function when using SCANNER mode and choosing SCAN AS .pdf. I am able to add sticky notes to a scanned file, but when I try to HIGHLIGHT TEXT, I get the change in cursor shape (as if to begin highlighting), but dragging over the text does nothing.

HP provides a "make PDF" routine in the software it provides with HP scanners. It is no Adobe's Acrobat.
PDF is an ISO Standard (since 2008). Any software house can make routines that create PDF.
Some are even worth their salt.
Anyway, typically HP also provides OCR capability with the software it provides with HP scanners.
So, use the HP routines to get an OCR'd PDF.
Then use Adobe Reader XI (which provides the full set of Comment and Drawing Markup tools) to highlight.
You need to OCR output because the Highlight tool HAS to have actual text -- an image or picture of text does not cut it.
(Scanner output is always an image / picture of what was on the paper.)
    Be well...

  • 10.4.9 Server Starts in Verbose Mode

When I restart my G4 Server, it looks like it is starting like normal, shows the blue startup screen and says Mac Server is starting up, but when the bar reaches the end, it briefly goes to an all blue screen and then moves to a black screen with white text(verbose mode I think).
After searching the forums, I tried forcing the mac os x startup by holding command and x during startup, but nothing changes. I have also tried entering:
    sudo nvram boot-args=""
to boot up normally, but still no change. I have tried repairing the disk in disk utility, booting from an external hard drive, but still boots in verbose mode.
    Any help would be great.

    Hi Dan-Cherokee:
What happens if you boot from the installer disk?
In the meantime try resetting the PRAM (ParameterRAM). Restart the server and hold down the command, alt, P and R keys at the same time. You should hear the start-up chime, keep them depressed until you hear the chime again, keep them depressed for a further start-up chime, now release the keys and immediately hold down the shift key. You will have to keep this depressed for some time as you are now booting in safe mode/boot. Eventually you will see the log in window with Safe Mode/Boot (in red) displayed, release the shift key and log in as normal, wait a few seconds and click on the trash icon, you should see a folder that has a long number for its name or possibly be called recovered items, delete this folder and reboot as normal. Safe Mode does a thorough check of your drive and directory as well as flushing system caches (this is what gets dumped into the trash).
    Hope this helps – Tony

  • Keynote doesn't show highlighted text when played.

I have highlighted text fragments on several slides. The highlight behind those text fragments looks fine when in design mode, but does not show in Play mode. These text objects are layered in front of other graphic objects. Does anyone else have this issue?

I thinks I figured this out. Highlights are treated like comments and are annotations attached to text rather than first-class objects n their own right. They are similar to PDF annotations.

  • Highlight text for Print

I am trying to find a way to be able to highlight text in a document and and then print it with the text highlighted (as you would when reading an article and marking thru important points with a pen highlighter) Also how would I highlight multiple but different text lines so that they all show? I can't seem to find a key that will allow it. (ie. control or option key)
    Thanks for your advice,
    Glen

ApleWorks doesn't provide for any method to directly "highlight text for printing," or for display on a monitor, for that matter. The 'highlighting' you see after dragging across a line or block of text is an indication that the text is Selected, and may now be manipulated, but tat highlighting will not appear on a printed page.
You can "place a colour block behind" the text to create an effect similar to running a hi-liter across the text on a printed page, it's fairly easy, and the result will print.
Show the Tools palette (Window > Show tools, or click the red toolbox at the lower left of the document window).
Use the Rectangle tool to draw a rectangle that just covers the text you want to highlight.
Use the Fill formatting button then the color palette to select a highlight colour. Repeat using the formatting button then the color palette to set the line colour to the same value as the fill colour.
Copy the rectangle so that you can re-use it.
Go Arrange > Move to back to place the rectangle behind the (now highlighted) text.
Still in Draw mode (you should have the Arrow mouse pointer—if not, click on the Selection tool {arrow} in the tools palette), Paste another copy of the coloured rectangle, drag it to the next line of text you want to highlight, and adjust the length to cover the text to be highlighted. Move to back as above. Repeat as necessary.
NOTE that these rectangles are not part of the text, but floating objects. If you edit text above the highlighted portion, change fonts or size, or change style (eg. to bold), the text to be highlighted will move, but the rectangles will not. Best to leave this highlighting until you've finished otherwise revising text.
NOTE2: When resizing small rectangles like this, it's easy to change their height when trying to change only their length.
TIP: When you have one the right size for the text size and font you are using, select it, then go Options > Object size... and note the height of the object, reported in the second box in the right column. For subsequent highlight rectangles, after adjusting the length to fit the text to be highlighted, open the Object size dialogue, enter the correct size into the Height box, then press tab to confirm the entry.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Snow Leopard booting in unwanted Verbose mode

    Hi,
Just bought a 2nd hand Mac Mini on which I clean installed Snow Leopard. Whenever I boot the screen goes black and fills with white text with information about the boot process. Verbose Mode, I presume. After the GUI comes in the Mac Mini boots and functions as normal. My question is how do I turn this off. I have tried: "sudo nvram boot-args=" to no effect. Is there another way to stop Verbose mode?

    Try resetting PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
