Verification failed! codec overrun!

So this is a brand new MacBook given to me yesterday as a Graduation present. I haven't been able to download anything (such as MSN messenger for Mac and Firefox for MAC, both of which have been downloaded from Apple website). I have tried probably fifty times. Each time I get the same error message 'verification failed' and then 'codec overrun'. I've called Apple three times today, and had to reinstall my software three times. Nothing has worked.
The Mac people don't know how to fix it.
Help anyone???

I'm getting this same error, from Firefox AND Safari. I'm using a TiPB/867MHz with a gig of RAM. I did the archive install (which mucked up my Apache2/PHP install, but that's another story), I did AppleJack.
Once I did the "downgrade" from 10.4.11 to 10.4.6, I was able to download the two Java updates (20 and 36MB - ????) but I can't download the 10.4.11 update at 186MB.
I also can't download things like Plone, iWork '08 demo, and a lot of other things. BUT I went to my Intel Macbook and the same links download fine.
I thought it was bad RAM, but I ran Techtool and everything checked out OK. Applejack didn't find any problems either.

  • G5 10.5.8 Combo Update codec overrun - install fails

    Hi,
I still have my first mac, a Power Mac G5, but it has been acting as a center speaker stand for some time now. A couple of years ago it started playing up, I spent hours and pounds trying to fix it, gave up and bought a shiny new iMac. So with the festive season upon us and orders to tidy up, I thought I'd have one last try at fixing it before turning it into a drinks cabinet.
As I recall, it all started to go wrong one day when I tried to download a large update to something. When I tried to install the update I got a Codec Overrun error and/or a Corrupt File message. As it stands today the machine is running a clean install of OSX 10.5.6 and I am failing to install the MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.8.dmg upgrade. I currently have 2 copies of the update.
One copy on the desktop  was downloaded directly from the Apple support site. The .dmg opens and verifies OK and I can launch the MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.8.pkg. This runs through the installation sequence, past the password but finally comes up with an error message "Install Failed. The installer could not validate the contents of the 'MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.8' package. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
Another copy in my downloads folder, put there by the Software Updater, doesn't get that far. It comes up with "Warning,The following disk image failed to mount. Image - MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.8.dmg, Reason - codec overrun."
    So far I have tried:-
Memory - run third party memory checker application (can't remember which one) and found no faults.Tried different set of memory cards
Hard disk - run all the disk check and repair utilities, re-formatted, repartitioned. Tried a different hard disk.
OSX 10.5.6 - reinstalled from original disks several times.
MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.8 - downloaded via Software Updater process and direct from Apple Support website. Downloaded via wi-fi, ethernet, different Mac, different PC. Always get the exact same file size.
    Resetting the PRAM etc
    New standby battery
    Installing in Safe Mode
    Swearing.
None of this has worked. I get some different error messages but they are all variations of "codec overrun", "corrupt file" or "Install failure"
Anyone got any other ideas? Or should I just get on with the drinks cabinet conversion?
    Thanks

That message isn't a space available message. If you bring up Disk Utility, how does it say the partition is formatted, ie, partition format, write status, and partition map scheme? Assume SMART status is verified, yes?

  • Disk images failed to mount - codec overrun

    Hi,
So after searching through the related posts I have been unable to correct my probelm, which is:
I am unable to open some .dmg files. I have tried to open three different .dmg files from a variety of sources and they all return the same error:
disk images failed to mount - codec overrun
However, I was able to update my system to 10.4.7 using the updater. This did not solve the problem. I then tried load the combo version of 10.4.7 as suggested in a different post and while it didn't load (I accidentally grabbed the powerPC version) it was able to open the .dmg and look in them.
Disk Utility is unable to attach the three that won't open. The first two Disk Utility was unable to verify or repair. The last (a cars game demo) was successfully verified but still came up with the codec overrun error when I tried to attach it. Finally I have tried removing the following two files and then restarting, to no effect.
    /System/Library/Extension.kextcache
    /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernalcaches/
I'd appreciate any help offered. A search on codec overrun was of no use. I searched for "mount failed disk images" and variations of that to find what I have already tried.
    Thanks
    Pete

I am havin the same problems. codec overrun
I am trying to download stuffit from their site so I can open a program for school.
I tried to download the dmg file from the apple site but was given the same error. Codec overrun
Also I attempted to get the updates from the Apple site.......same error.
So far this computer will not download much of anything without some kind of an error. Essentially this Imac is a $2000 jukebox. It does play music wonderfully.
My roommate was able to downlad easily from the same internet connection with no problem the windows version of the program from te same site.
This is a brand new out of the box iMac. 20" 1 gig 250 GB machine. First Mac for me and it is turning into a real headache.
Any help with the codec overrun would be appreciated.

  • Can't install Silverlight for Netflix via Safari (verification failed)

I tried to watch a streaming video on Netflix and was told I needed to uninstall and then reinstall Silverlight as there was an error with my version.  I successfully uninstalled my old version of Silverlight but have not been able to successfully re-open Silverlight.
When I download Silverlight through Safari, the program downloads, but I can't open it because it says "Verification Failed."
When I download Silverlight through Firefox, the program downloads, but I can't open it because it says "Invalid checksum."
I have made sure that my versions of Safari and Firefox are up to date, and I have tried downloading Silverlight from the Netflix website and the Microsoft website.  Also, I have restarted my computer several times, but that doesn't seem to do anything either.
What do I do now? Help!

With both those sites I could download Silverlight but still said "Verification Failed" when I tried to open.
I also tried downloading using Chrome instead of Safari or Firefox. Again, I could download but when I tried to open it said "codec overrun."
I'm guessing its not a problem with the browser I'm using?  Looking at the log of my installed updates, I think I'm current on my system updates.

  • Codec Overrun Warning/Error

I wanted to share my experience with you all regarding an error I was getting when attempting to mount and decompress dmg files while updating my software.
I would use the built in Update Software tool from the Apple menu... select the packages I wanted... then watch them download. Once down, they would decompress and mount. I would then get an informative error: An error has occurred, and the package might have been tampered with (something along those lines). Anyway I would then download the file directly form the Apple Support site... when I attempted to mount it, I would get a codec overrun warning.
Several calls into the Apple Support Line and I think we found the solution to this problem. The support person, who spoke with a product specialist, stated that I need to do a resinstall using archive and preserve user settings. Doing so, yielded problems with the second disk... it failed installing Garage Band Instruments... so I removed the package and did it again... this time it failed installing some items from iLife. Again, these I didn't care one bit about... so I removed all packages... and it still wanted to install all the packages, even though I told it not to install any of them. Talk about frustrating!
Another call into Apple Support suggested that I NOT select Preserve User Settings... This blew away my accounts... but preserved all my documents and the like, so there was no data lost.
Once complete with the install/upgrade/reinstall of software, I was able to download all the files from the apple support site and mount them with no problems. I then moved my user directory from the "preserved" section to my local user directory... bounced the box... life was back to normal.
This took about five calls into support and about 30 attempts to figure out what was going on with the failures.
I never did get a reason for the codec overrun error or the cause... but didn't want anyone else going through the same pain I did.
    MacPro Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thanks greatly for your help with this.
I had been unable to mount or install the last 4 months of Apple specific updates, as well as some of the other "fun" software out there (Blender, Mac for the SlingBox, etc.).
Searching the various forums here and elsewhere provided no assistance until your post.
Unfortunately, I have so far found that the system will download well again, until...it won't. At which point, I have to again save the settings and reinstall the OS, and do the same set of updates all over. Luckily (?), software other than the specific Mac system stuff seems to stay installed correctly, awaiting the reinstall of current OS files.
This has been my first experience with a Mac, and I have been very much underwhelmed. Perhaps this has been an anomaly, but when this dies, I think I will be returning to the non-Mac world.
    I always did like linux!
    Thanks again!

  • Why am I seeing 'codec overrun' when I try to mount the FF8.0 DMG?

Have just downloaded FF8.0 and tried to open the DMG. But unfortunately I've gotten the warning message that the DMG failed to mount, with the stated reason being 'codec overrun.' Can anyone help?

first try a different usb cable, remove all other usb devices, and try a different port in back on desktops if possible.  if no luck see these
These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. FollowTroubleshooting security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
Also, check your hosts file to verify that it's not blocking iTunes from communicating with the update server. See iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you have software used to perform unauthorized modifications to the iOS device, uninstall this software prior to editing the hosts file to prevent that software from automatically modifying the hosts file again on restart.

  • Codec Overrun And Invalid Checksum

Over the past 2 months, I have been having issues downloading the iPhone SDK. I started attempting to download the dmg from the iPhone Dev Center from 2.2 and since the day Apple releases 3.0. I have downloaded over 30 times and every single time, I tried to mount the DMG, it is either Invalid Checksum or Codec Overrun. I tried downloading other DMGs and what strikes me was that any DMG below 1GB, seems to mount successfully. Those that are above (like the iPhone SDK), are giving errors. Even if I skip the validation part, which forces the DMG to mount successfully, I would end up failing in installation.
There are countless written cases around this when googled, and I've tried every one of them, short of a complete re-installation of Leopard. And even that, I am not sure it will work as some have written to say that they have tried but unsuccessful. From changing the router, to stopping internet sharing to disabling all firewall and security and even repairing all disk permission and clearing all cache! Majority of people have this codec overrun issue, none has actually posted a resolution. What bugs me was that even RAR files that I download gets CRC failures and I am not sure if this is related to the DMG problems.
If there are anyone out there who has this resolved, please share... you will save a lot of people with tremendous amount of hassle. If any Apple Technician is reading this, please acknowledge and rectify... this is the single most frustrating problem with Leopard. Do a google on 'Codec Overrun' and you will hit countless users expressing their frustration over this issue. I had zero problems with downloads on Tiger, but ever since Leopard, this is showing up so often and I am surprise it only exist on the Macs. I am not sure who's fault lies with such download problem, the ISP, any hardware, the software or the OS... but I am certain that this has every bit to do with the Mac OS. It doesn't explain why Tiger is perfectly ok with downloads and eversince Leopard, it's not.

Strongly suggest posting to the appropriate forum under OS X Technologies where the Unix and developers hang out.

  • Verification Failed. The certificate for this server is invalid

I am trying to backup my iPad to iCloud.  I get:
Verification Failed.  The certificate for this server is invalid. You might be connecting to a server that is pretending to be "setup.icloud.com" which could put your confidential information at risk.
I am logged onto the wifi at work and I can surf the Internet so the connection is OK.
How do I begin to debug this issue?

    Hey everyone,
I had this issue for few months already! I have a @me.com mail address, theoretically should be compatible with iCloud, just for some reason, it's not working!!
The mail all work fine on my macbook and iPhone, just the ipad kept showing the error message, the "verification failed".
The internet is wi-fi and it all working fine.
    Now here is the solution.
Make sure you got internet connected fine.
Go Setting --> Mail, Contacts, Calendars --> Add Account --> Other
    --> Add Mail Address -->
in the description, it will auto showing "Me", don't change it!
    Go "Next" -->
    in the Incoming Mail Server
    Host Name --> Type "imap.mail.me.com"
Then your user name and password
    in the Outgoing Mail Server
    Host Name --> Type "smtp.mail.me.com"
Then your user name and password
    Then next and save it.
This should work, it works for me,
    Hope this helps!!

  • Verification failed certificate for this server is invalid

I attempt to log into the iCloud on my iPod over a WiFi connection and it gives me the Verification Failed. The certificate for this server is invalid. You might be connecting to a server that is pretending to be "setup.icloud.com" which could put your confidential information at risk.
Why am I getting this and how can I access the iCloud to backup my files?

This happened to me because my router was configured to use Open DNS servers (Primary 208.67.222.222, Secondary 208.67.220.220). Temporarily adjusting the DNS settings on the router to 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 did the trick. Open DNS does weird things with certain certificates. Even if your router is configured to used something else, try the ones listed above to see if it makes a difference.

  • Mobile Me Verification Failed - it says the certificate for this server is invalid.  What does that mean?

Trying to set up a 2nd device on Mobile Me and it's telling me "Verification Failed, Certificate for this server is invalid, I might be connecting to a server that is pretending to be setup.me.com which can put my confidential information at risk."   Please tell me what this means and how to correct it.  My 1st device set up with Mobile Me just fine.

Check your date/time settings if correct.
Happened to me when I changed the battery then I found out that the settings is not yet set.
    Works flawless now!
