Either use different icloud IDs (accounts) on each device, or on the iPad, turn off iMessage (Settings>Messages).  Or use a different Send & Receive address (same settings page).

  • ICloud Backup Issues on iPhone & iPad Air: NOT Enough Storage (5 GB)

I've been a user of the free 5 GB of storage since its inception without any problems.  I was backing up data on my iPhone and 3rd gen. iPad on a regular basis and never ran into any issues.
I recently upgraded to an iPad Air and set it up using a restoration and it went off without a hitch.  The very next day I started noticing these warnings that I was approaching my storage limit even though I had not really changed the amount of data on my phone or the Air.  I don't download lots of apps and basically only update them when necessary.  I use iTunes Match, so I stream my music from the cloud so I don't have audio files on any devices, with the exception of my iPhone for those times I don't have access to wi-fi -- and it's always been the same number of files/same size.
(The iPhone is showing 3.5 GB in use and the Air is showing 1.3 as of this post).
I do have a fair amount of photos in the iPhoto stream as I'm always snapping something, but not to the point of being obssessed. And I always am moving them into iPhoto/Aperture and deleting them frequently, so I'm not talking about thousands of photos being on either device at any time.
In other words, I'm like the average user when it comes to the amount of data on my devices -- and am not going overboard where it's at the point that I know I have to delete things to make room.
I've scrutinized the file sizes of everything I possibly can in the settings on both devices yet I'm still getting the warning that I don't have enough storage space.  I find it hard to believe that something during the process of setting up the Air pushed my storage over the edge to where I actually need to purchase space because I just am not seeing any deviation from what I used to do before setting up the Air.
I deleted the 3rd gen. iPad backup as well as any other old backups from iCloud which are no longer relevant each and every single time I've upgraded any device.  I don't have anyone else using these devices other than myself so no one is downloading apps, snapping pix, or doing anything which would add data.  I did a quick glance at the forums to see that lots of people have this problem - so I'm wondering if it's some type of glitch?
My iPhone told me today that I had not backed up to iCloud in weeks - which I'm sure refers to the time right around I bought the Air - as I have my devices to auto backup when connected to wi-fi. The last backup according to settings was 5/6 -- while the Air was on 5/16.
This is very annoying as I don't want to have to buy the next level of storage just to rid myself of this message so I'd be interested to know what others have tried.  Sure, I can just do a complete backup of all my devices to my computer -- which I do fairly regularly -- but it was always good to know that I had access to iCloud backups for those times I didn't hook things up to my MBP.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to things I can try to rid myself of this dreaded message? It pops up daily and I really would love to fix it.   Thanks!

I think I figured it out.  I went through my iPhone and turned off a lot of the apps that were slotted to backup and it appears to done the trick as the phone is backing up to iCloud.
The language needs to be broken down where it makes more sense of what's happening behind the scenes during these backups as I think it can be easily miscontrued that it's the data the various specific apps are using which is the issue at hand and not them apps themselves is what's causing the increase in size; some people may think that if they turn these apps off, they are deleting the apps from their devices so they leave them all switched on which ends up bumping up the size and ultimately eating up storage space.
I admit to not really paying attention to what the explanation was saying when I initially got the error message which made me initially post this.  Now that I'm rationally thinking, I can see the problem of the disappearing space and am off to turn off a handful of apps on the Air to reduce the storage allotment even more

  • Multiple iCloud Backups (Issue Deleting)

    Hi,
I noticed that my iCloud storage space has drastically dropped and crunching the numbers, they don't add up.
I recently did a fresh install of my iPhone and wanted to restore my iPhone from an older backup. Low and behold, I found
many older iPhone and iPad backups lurking inside. However, going into the iCloud panel in both the Mac and iPhone does not
reveal them. Please advise as this is taking up precious space and not allowing me to delete old backups.
    Thanks!

You would have to restore the entire backups to access the photos.  If you have data on your phone now that you want to save, you would need to back it up to your computer using iTunes, then restore the first iCloud backup, import the recovered photos to your computer (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083), then restore the second backup and import those photos to your computer too, then restore your original backup from your computer using iTunes to return your phone to it's current state.  Then you could put all the recovered photos in a folder and sync them to your phone by selecting the folder on the Photos tab of your iTuens sync settings and syncing.

  • ICloud backup issue

I'm trying to backup my old phone settings to my new phone, but when I try to do that my iCloud won't work. It says that my email account isn't verified but when I go into my account is says it already is.

If it is really verified all you need to do is sign out and back in.
If it is not verified you need to sign out verify and sign in. Normally all you need to do is verify, but go around and sign out first.

  • ICloud backup is not working

I am getting an error message that reads - Verification Failed, Request timed out even though the credentials are correct.

Any one having a problem with iCloud BackUp ?
Here is the solution..(works with iPhone, iPod, iPad)
    1) Please export all your contacts by signing on iCloud.com
1.1) Go to https://www.icloud.com/ and sign in with your Apple ID
1.2) Go to contacts and click on the settings icon on the bottom left of the page which is also called as the Show   Actions menu. And then click on Export vCard.
1.3) Your file is saved on desktop or any location that you choose to save at.
    2) On your device, go to the settings menu - General - Reset - Erase All Content and Settings
    3) Allow the device to restore and turn into a new device.
    4) Sign in with iCloud account on your device and turn on backup after you restore all the data you need on your device.
Try Backing it once you have completed all the above steps. iCloud backup works !!

  • ICloud backup iOS 8.1 - failing to backup

Since updating iOS to 8.1 yesterday, my iPhone 6 and my iPad retina mini are both failing to make iCloud backups. Either manually or automatically when powered and idle. I have loads of space on iCloud so that is not the issue. Tried deleting existing iCloud backups, tried logging in and out of iCloud account, restarting devices etc. Still not working 12 hours later. Anyone else?

There is a bug with 8.1 and I think I know what it is. Something in iOS 8.1 is double counting your space each time you try to backup, including the backup that hasn't yet occurred. Either that, or it is a bug/ploy from Apple to make a lot of people buy storage upgrades so we can backup.
For example, I have two devices backed up using 4.5GB of space, an iPad at 1.2GB and an iPhone 6 at 3.3GB. It said the size of my next backup for my iPhone6 is 3.3GB (no bigger than my prior backup). It says in Settings/iCloud/Manage Storage that I need an additional 2.8GB of space to do my backup, that I only have 458MB of space and is offering for me to upgrade my storage plan. What that means is that my next backup is not taking into account that most of the data in the prior backups is the same data.
So here's the additional bug - as a workaround I tried deleting my last backup and turning off iCloud backups on my iPhone. I then turned back on my iCloud backup again and it shows my current backup as 3.3GB (but not completed), and says I need an additional 2.8GB in order for it to backup and to upgrade my plan. It's counting my backup that I haven't been able to complete as used storage and still shows I only have 458MB available. This all started with iOS 8.1 after i installed it last night and my backups just started failing.
Based on these calculations, on iOS 8.1 if you have only one device (total) with more than 2.5GB backing up, you will never be able to use the 5GB free storage. You have to have enough space for your prior backup (including the one you're trying to do), and an entirely new backup on top of that. The extra fun bug is that it's even counting your current incomplete backup as already used iCloud space.

  • ICloud backup fail

    Hi,
the iCloud backup on my iPad Air (iOS 7.1) fails.
I tried deleting the iCloud backup, turning off/on backup. Still fails. My iCloud backup on the iPhone (iOS 7.1) works fine!
When I look into Xcode / Console, I see the following errors:
Mar 22 18:11:56 Rolands-iPad-5 backupd[462] <Warning>: WARNING: Error putting item into chunk store: /var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control/iTunes/MediaLibrary.sqlitedb (b12a5ad5e199d4f2fe91130a8205ae5562f3aa68): Error putting item into MMCS (MBErrorDomain/302). Any ideas how to fix this?
    thanks, Roland

I am having a similar problem except that now it is affecting both my iphone 5s and my ipad Air. both 64gb and both on 7.1.
Have tried all the steps suggested including turning off icloud completely and deleting all backups. If I watch in xcode I see varying errors related to:
<Warning>: WARNING: Error putting item into chunk store: /var/mobile/Library/SMS/sms.db
But the file itself varies. I have also tried turning off imessage and turning off all apps in the icloud backup.
I've tried creating a new icloud account and the same failure applies.
Have tried on various WIFI networks to rule out a network issue. The kicker is sometimes it will work and will back up. However even if I change nothing on the phone after getting a successful backup, the next one will always fail.
So even if I can get a backup to work, immediately after I click Back Up Now and it fails with some varying error.
Have also tried the backing up to itunes and then restoring, setting up as new and trying an icloud backup and it still fails. Yes I am able to get to a secure website on both devices.

  • HT4859 Recover iCloud backup

I have lost my photos from my iPad. My backup on iCloud is old so should have some of those photos in it. How do I restore the backup to this existing device?

Troubleshooting an iCloud backup issue can take some time.  Since you're pressed for time right now here's what I recommend you do:
Perform a manual backup to your computer using iTunes instead of iCloud.  To do this, connect your phone to iTunes, right-click on the name of your phone on the left side and select Back Up.  When complete, go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and confirm that the backup is listed.
Sync you phone with iTunes to transfer all your purchases to your iTunes library.
Back up your contacts separately using the free app My Contacts Backup (paid version if >500 contacts).  This will back up your contacts as an attachment to an email that you send to yourself.  If necessary, you can later open the email and tap the attachment to re-import your contacts to your computer.
Import your photos to your computer for safekeeping as outlined here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.
When you get your replacement phone, during the initial setup, when given the option, select Restore from iTunes Backup.  (This will restore much faster than an iCloud backup anyway.)  When complete, sync it with iTunes to transfer your apps, music and other iTunes media to your phone.  If your contacts don't restore from backup (which they often don't), open the email you made earlier and tap the attachment to import your contacts.  Set up your existing iCloud account on your new phone during setup then turn you data syncing for contacts, calendars, etc. to On; if prompted when you do this, choose Merge.
This should get your new phone fully restored with your data and iCloud account.  Then you can try backing it up to iCloud again and see if it succeeds this time.  If not, try deleting your most recent iCloud backup and try again.  If it still fails, post a new question and we'll take things from there.

If you see the white WiFi bars in the upper left corner, that simply means that the iPad has detected a WiFi network, and that does not mean that you are connected to the Internet.
Can you open web sites with Safari?

  • I have 2 i4 phones.  I can sign on to iCloud on 1 but never on the other.  Does anyone have the answer to this.  I have tried to change my password but I still have the same problem.  I keep getting message "Verification Failed The request timed out"

I upgraded to 2 -  i4 phones with 2 different phone numbers.  I can sign on to iCloud on 1 phone but never on the other.  I have changed my my password twice but no matter what I do, I still have the same problem.  I keep getting a message "Verification Failed The request timed out"  no matter how many times I try to sign on it always times out.  Before I upgraded to the i4, I had a i3GS and had the same exact problem.  Does anyone have any ideas???

Firstly, go to http://iforgot.apple.com and sign in with the ID you use for iCloud. A new password will be sent to your associated email address.
If that doesn't work, for example because it's going to an address you can't access, then you will have to contact Support. Go to https://expresslane.apple.com ; click 'See all products and services' at the bottom of the page. In the next page click 'More Products and Services, then 'Apple ID'. In the next page select 'Other Apple ID Topics' then 'Lost or forgotten Apple ID password' and click 'Continue'.
