Verify Disk Error

Hi,
I've been having some trouble with applying the last security patch (2006-001 + and itunes update- but that's another story), and I decided to run the Disk Verifier just to make sure nothing's wrong with my drive.
When I run it, I get an error that a volume header needs a minor repair, and it prompts me for my password. Once given, I get an error saying: "Error, the underlying task reported failure on exit", and the button for repair disk in the disk utility remains greyed out.
What should I do?

Hi.
Disk repair can only be run when booted from the install DVD or an external drive.
See "Disk Utility Help: Testing and repairing your startup disk."
If 'Repair' reports that errors have been repaired then re-run it till you get the message that the disk appears to OK.
Re your updates problems, many people have reported success by downloading the 10.4.5 Combo Update, and installing it, thereby bypassing the Software Update application.

Lately, my MBP has been freezing, forcing me to close the lid/put it to sleep for a while or restart to get the mouse to move again. Also, the CD/DVD drive is no longer working.
I ran Verify Disk in Disk Utility and got this:

Now, I know I need to reboot from the installation CD but my drive isn't working. Can anyone think of a solution for me/tell me what the problem is?

You can perform directory repairs very similar to Disk Utility's *Repair Disk* routine by booting into Single User Mode and running fsck:

Any other repair method will require using your nonfunctioning optical drive or being able to start the computer from an external drive containing Disk Utility, so try fsck first.

Disk Utility unable to verify disk (Error -9972)

Please help! I downloaded the Security Update 2007-004 and my comp crashed! When I turn my computer on I get a folder icon in the middle of the screen and it won't start.
I tried using Disk 1 to get to my harddrive. I got to Disk Utility and tried to verify disk. But I got the following message.
Invalid B-tree node size.
Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit. (-9972)
So I can't verify and therefore can't repair my disk. I need my computer for my school assignment. Please please help.

Do you know what size the Hard Drive is, and how much space is available?
Although that error is not exactly good news, it is not necessarily a death knell.
DiskWarrior, does indeed, have a high success rate at rebuilding when Disk Utility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing a volume (Error -9972).
In the above link it states;
*Back up as much of your important data and files as you can, then try using a third-party disk utility to repair the drive. Be sure that you use one that works with your version of Mac OS X."
DiskWarrior, also linked above, is just such a third-party utility.
But just in case it is unsuccessful, and you need to perform an Erase & Install, I suggest that if possible, you back up the system, or at least any data that you cannot afford to lose.
If you have access to another Mac that is Firewire enabled, you might be able to backup, or retrieve data, using Firewire Target Disk Mode.

Verifying Disk Error Report

I would be grateful for some imput into the below issue.
Running "Verify disk" in Disk Utility program returns the following error:
Verifying volume “Shiny Silver Box”
Performing live verification.
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Checking extents overflow file.

Checking multi-linked files.
Checking catalog hierarchy.
Checking extended attributes file.

(It should be 578374 instead of 578375)
Invalid volume directory count
(It should be 175359 instead of 175358)
The volume Shiny Silver Box was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.
My MacBook Pro seems to be working fine but, all the same, I am a little concerned about the internal drive being 'corrupt'.
How can I fix this problem? I don't understand how to "start up your computer with another disk..." ??

Diskutil - Verify disk - error in log

Sorry for the long post.
I have a iMac Late 2012 with 1TB Fusion drive and been running Yosemite for the past several months. Installed Bootcamp to run Windows 7 and after couple of weeks later wanted to also install Mavericks for my development work as the software that I was trying to use doesn't support Yosemite yet. I tried to remove Bootcamp partition from Disk Utility but unable to do so as the "-" sign wasn't enabled.
Launched Terminal and used some Core Storage commands which messed my parititon I think. After doing this, I got kernel panics while rebooting. I booted into the Recovery HD partition and ran VerifyDisk from Disk Utility and one of the lines has this displayed in red:
Invalid Logical volume header @<some number>
The last line says "The drive appears to be OK". I tried to reinstall Yosemite from a bootable flash drive and to my dismay, the installer didn't list my 1TB Fusion drive. I called up support and have an appointment with Apple care next week.
Meanwhile, as a last resort, I checked on other forums and ran these commands from Terminal:
diskutil cs list
diskutil cs delete <core storage partition>
diskutil eraseDisk jhfs+ <label> <disk id1>
diskutil eraseDisk jhfs+ <label> <disk id2>
After this I continued with the Disk Utillity and it gave me a message saying "No Core Storage found...". Do you want to fix it?
I clicked on the Fix button and it did everything successfully. I partitioned the Macintosh HD into two partitions and and was able to install Yosemite 10.10.1 with no issues. I then ran VerifyDisk from within Yosemite and getting this on the Yosemite (first partition):

Now, my questions are, initially, I got the "Invalid Logical volume header @ <some number>. Is this cause of concern that the Fusion drive is failing and chances of occurring again?
My next question is, based on the log, does it look OK?. Also, what does this mean "Logical Volume Group E2086E44-46AF-471C-A0F4-AC1449DAC936 spans 2 devices disk0s2+disk1s2: Logical Volume Group has a 24 MB Metadata Volume with double redundancy"?. Is this normal or cause of concern?
Surprisingly, I ran VerifyDisk on the 2nd partition (Mavericks) which I haven't installed Mavericks yet and I see this:

On an unrelated task, I have to do this for a software that I'm trying to install and issued the following commands from Terminal.
sudo cp ~/Desktop/com.lsreset.plist /Library/LaunchDaemons/<appconfig.plist>
sudo launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/<appconfig.plist>
and seeing this:
/Library/LaunchDaemons/appconfig.plist: Operation already in progress
Previously, I didn't see this error (last month or so)? Is this related to the HDD issue that I'm facing?

Verified disk error (?)

Thought I'd run some basic maintenance elements ontop of the weekly CRON brushups, so I ran Disk Utility hoping to run a mere permissions check.
Unfortunately, upon verifying the disk I was met with an error message, which gave me the following:
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair
Now what exactly is this error and what does it entail ? Furthermore, what are my options ? Is a fresh install my only real choice ?

Sort of reformatting, try DiskWarrior to repair the drive if your Disk Utility can't.

Disk utility verify drive error

When I run disk utility I receive the following error. In reading previous posts I discoverd that I needed to use the OSX install disk. So I get it showing in the utilities window on the left side and attempt to get disk utility running by following this path on the disk -- Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Double clicking disk utility has no result.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

As Doug has said, & indeed you have tried....you need to run diskutility from the OS install disk. Or more accurately, you need to run diskutility when booted from the install disk.
The following ( from diskutility help) should explain it clearly.
Start up your computer using another disk.
To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc and restart your computer holding down the Option key, then select the Install Mac OS X disc and click the arrow.
Open Disk Utility.
If you're using the Mac OS X Install disk, follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it., and then choose Utilities > Open Disk Utility.
Select the startup disk in the list of disks and volumes, then click First Aid.
Check the S.M.A.R.T. Status at the bottom of the window. If you can't see it, be sure you selected the hard disk your volume is on, and not the volume itself.
If the S.M.A.R.T. Status is "About to Fail," back up your files on the disk as soon as possible and replace the disk.
If the S.M.A.R.T. Status is "Verified" or "Not supported," click Repair Disk to repair the disk.
If Disk Utility tells you to look for links to corrupt files in the DamagedFiles directory, two or more files occupy the same space on your hard disk and at least one of them is likely to be corrupt. Examine each affected file in the DamagedFiles folder, which at the top-level of the affected disk. If you can replace it or recreate the file, delete it. If it contains necessary information, open it and examine its data to make sure it has not been corrupted.
If Disk Utility reports "The underlying task reported failure," Disk Utility encountered a problem it could not repair. Back up as much of your data as possible, reformat your disk, reinstall Mac OS X, and restore your backed up data.

It sounds like you ran Live Verification, i.e. used Verify Disk against your startup disk while booted from such. One can Verify, but not Repair, the current startup disk.
Run the Procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
If Disk Utility still fails to repair the disk, see the "Disk Utility cannot repair the disk" section of that same FAQ.

I need help. My iMac has been doing weird stuff for awhile but now it's just out of control. I did a system restore from a time maching backup and I thought things were okay, but then I rebooted in safe mode just to see if it would help with the "slow" problem I had after the restore. Well, all I could get after that was a black screen. So I booted up from my install disk and ran verify disk permissions and got this error code: Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
I've also seen: Invalid node structure, etc.
I hope someone can give me some good advice. I've thought about purchasing Disk Warrior but am trying to put it off as I don't want to spend $100.

Try this:
Repair the Hard Drive
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

Error message when do Verify Disk

Running Repair Disk will, likely, give you the same error. But, go ahead and try it, anyway. This is a directory/filesystem issue that Disk Utility is usually unable to repair. It is sometimes caused by a failing Hard Drive. If your Hard Drive is the original one that shipped with the computer, it likely needs to be replaced, as the average life of these drives is 3 to 5 years. Here are your options:
• First order of business is to backup your data if you do not have a current backup.
• You can use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior. One of these will likely do the job, but that is not guaranteed.
• You can (make sure you have a backup) reinstall the OS. I recommend a complete reformat, erase and reinstall, then restore from backup. (Post back for step by step directions). An Archive and Install may work, but is not guaranteed, and even so, you should have your data backed up.
If you choose to install a new HDD please post back for available drives, as well as for step by step directions and additional tips.

I have an error in Verify disk permission and i can not fix it ,is there any solutions ?

I have 38 GB (other) in my storage ,I have 120 GB storage and this other part bothers me,is there any suggestions please ?

Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. When I boot on Recovery and run verify disk, the error doesn't come anymore. Just when I run verify disk on normal mode. Anybody has seen this before?

My Macbook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2013) has been freezing out of the blue probably once every two months. I restarted on safe mode, went to Disk Utility, repaired permissions and ran "Verify Disk" and got the following:
Invalid directory item count(It should be 114483 instead of 114484)
File system check exit code is 8.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.
Rebooted on Recovery mode and ran "Verify Disk" but the message didn't appear anymore, thus not letting me to access the "Recovery HD" procedure.
When I restart normally and do the disk verification I get the same error.
Has anybody come to something similar?

I never ever run a Verify Disk. I simple repair the disk drive and then the user partition(s).
And do one or two Safe Boots.
Also helpful to have two full backups: TimeMachine at least, plus a clone of your system drive and data.
Install or clone the system to an external hard drive, repair that and then boot from it, check that everything works, repair the internal drive.
You need to use Repair to TRIM an SSD.
Lots of problems with Yosemite when updating install a new OS. Always better to backup, erase, install, and then use Setup Assistant to import and restore settings and files.
Probably better to post in the MacBook Pro forum or better yet, in Yosemite forum.

WD External disk Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed

Hi all
My Western Design external hard drive has started to run really slowly when accessing data as well as transferring. After plugging the usb to the mac it takes about 30 seconds to pick up the drive with a DISK ERROR message. I have been into disk utilities and tried verifying the disk and repairing with the following message coming up...

It sounds like your WD drive is failing. Download Smart Utility from http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php and see what it says about the health of the drive.
If you scan various discussion groups, you'll see issues with WD external drives, as the electronics can be problematic.

If after doing what Michael suggested you are still not able to repair your disk, you may need a more powerful such as DiskWarrior to repair it I have found that when the the disk has problems that the tools within OS X are unable to repair then DW usual does it.
If DW is not able to do it for you about the only other alternative is to reformat and start over again.
You should have a good backup before doing either of these solutions to protect yourself.
