Verify Disk Fails on 11" Mid-2011 MBA

Hi,
When using Disk Utility to Verify Disk, I get the following error:
Unable to bootstrap transaction group 1877: invalid field value
No valid commit checkpoint found
The volume 5E475AC6-27BF-4533-89F3-A1E555405EDA was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Problems were found with the partition map which might prevent booting
Error: Storage system verify or repair failed.
I tried searching, but didn't seem to be able to find anything related. Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks!

I have the same problem and my drive is encrypted with Filevault 2.  Here is a copy of my Disk Utility results-

Error: Storage system verify or repair failed.
This is a brand spanking new Macbook Pro 8,2 with a clean install of lion with my user account migrated from a time machine backup.  The weird thing is that if I boot to the recovery partition and verify the disk, it comes back clean with no errors.  When I log in again and run disk utility immediately after logging in, disk utility shows no errors.  I only get these errors after the machine has been on for a while.
I have tried just doing a repair disk in the recovery partition to see if it would help but I still get the same errors after a few hours of use.  I think there is a bug with Filevault.
I am using 10.7.1

  • Mid 2011 MBA can't see Apple tv

    Hi There,
My Macbook Air is Mid 2011 running Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and is unable to see a 3rd generation Apple Tv on the network in itunes.
Other posts indicate the Mid 2011 MBA is compatable with the apple tv and Itunes on my windows laptop is able to direct audio to the apple tv so what am I missing on the Mac?
    Thanks

    etaniajura,
    Things to check:
Both the MBA and the ATV are on the same network/subnet.
The ATV is updated to the most recent software.
Both the MBA and the ATV are signed into Home Sharing with the same Apple ID.

  • Verify Disk Fails

    Hi All,
I tried using the Boot Camp assistant to install Windows, but I got distracted during when the Mac rebooted. Might be coincidence, but likely I did something to mess up the volume structure of the drive.
Anyway, what can I do to fix volume errors if Disk Utility fails to repair the damage?
Is there a way I can reinstall 10.5.2 again but not erase my files?

You said "Verify Disk Fails." Did you restart from the Leopard installation disk, run Disk Utility from the Installer's Utilities menu, and use the *Repair Disk* routine. Disk Utility will not do the repair on the disk that is being used for startup.
Is there a way I can reinstall 10.5.2 again but not erase my files?
The option in Installer is called +Archive and Install+. It will preserve your user data and settings. However, you should still backup your data, just in case.

    Repair the drive:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Verify Disk failed for Time Machine backup disk

Thread <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7930301&#7930301> discussed a similar issue, but it was closed without an answer so I'm opening a new one.
After a power failure I ran Disk Utility to Repair Permissions on my boot disk and Verify Disk on another that I use to store media files; neither had significant problems. Then I ran Verify Disk (verify, not repair; and disk, not permissions) on my Time Machine backup disk. It started spitting out the errors shown below. The time remaining counted up to 16 minutes, but wasn't coming down very fast so I left it running overnight. My machine is set to not sleep or spin down the disks. The next evening it was down to 12 minutes left, and was still spitting out the same errors. The second evening it was done, having failed out as shown in this log file excerpt:

Upon the 2nd restart the system booted and seems to be OK, but I'm leery of running another Verify Disk.
What's going on? Are those errors anything to worry about? Is it possible to run Verify Disk on a Time Machine backup disk? What about Repair Disk?

Any time Disk Utility says you need to repair a disk, you need to repair it. Period.
So run it. If it fails to repair everything, run it again (and again) until it either repairs everything or can't repair any more. If it can't repair it, post back and we'll discuss options.
There's no point in running +Verify Disk+ on an external drive; just run +Repair Disk.+ The only time +Verify Disk+ is needed is for your internal HD (because you can't repair the disk you're running from).
And you need to do that again because of the forced power-down. Any time there's an abnormal shutdown, it's possible the file system on your internal HD can be damaged. Usually it isn't, but it's possible. If that says you need to repair it, you'll have to boot from your Leopard Install disc and use it's copy of DU. Post back if you need to do this but don't know how.

  • Screen Tearing on Mid-2011 MBA with 10.8.5?

I've just updated my MBA Mid-2011 to 10.8.5, and have noticed consistent screen-tearing throughout. It's a slow phase that works bottom-to-top and moving any windows around shows a very clear tear (different accelerations either side, leading me to believe this is an issue with the double-buffering timing.) I am aware Apple have performed screensaver fixes(?) and am wondering if others have noticed a similar issue.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1) Open any windowed application (I used finder)
    2) Click and drag window header bar, moving in smooth circular motions
    3) Observe over 10-20 seconds this phase-line crawling up the screen breaking the double buffer paging
This wasn't here before, it would've irked me had it been before now. No idea how this'll be fixed without another update, as OS X doesn't really permit much in the way of display server configuration, but any suggestions welcome!

I didnt imply it was an SMC issue, but a diagnostic elimination step.
Ahhh, 10.8.5 ....  So I assume Apple let you install same as a developer of the YET TO BE RELEASED 10.8.4
Im afraid theres going to be little assistance HERE for that, ...on an unreleased OSX.

  • Verify Disk failed on backup, but Repair was successful: new backup anyway?

    Hi,
I performed an incremental backup to a FW400-attached WD My Book, using Carbon Copy Cloner. The clone completed with no reported errors.
I performed a Verify Disk with Disk Utility on the new clone, and errors were reported. Under "Checking Multi-Linked Files" there was an "Incorrect file hard link count" error, or similar. I was told that a Repair Disk was essential. When I ran this, under "Checking Multi-Linked Files" Disk Utility reported repairing quite a long list of "orphaned i-nodes". Must have been about a hundred. However, at the end it reported that the Disk Repair was successful, and a further Verify Disk reported no errors.
Should I trust this clone, or do it again to make sure?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
That's the way I was thinking, but I guess I was hoping to get some confirmation from someone who knows about the specific error and how Disk Utility repairs such errors before going through the whole brouhaha.
Anyway, it's moot now, as I've just discovered that Western Digital officially declared all their external drives unsuitable for booting on Macs back in March. See http://forums.bombich.com/viewtopic.php?t=11152 for details and links. So, the drive's going back to the retailer anyway---hopefully.

  • Verify disk fails, verify disk fails

Verify stops and the following is what I read:
This volume Mac HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired
Error:  This disk needs to be repaired.  Start up your computer with another disk (such as Mac OS X install disc) then use disk utility to repair this disk.
I have my Snow Leopard disk, rebooted with it in the drive but I get the install menu.  So went to the disk utility and ran the verify and it failed again, I am not sure what I am supposed to do.
HELP, thanks in advance for a clear step by step instruction for me to follow.
    Cindy

Verify does not Repair. Do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

    Hi,
I'm looking for a solution to this issue. Console shows that mba wakes up for timemachine backups but when firing Find My Mac on iPhone or iMac, it does not succeed in locating my mba and it is listed as offline.
    How to solve this?
    Cheers

This states that you need to do an smc reset for full powernap functionality. It could be effecting it if it was an older macbook air that you updated to mountain lion?

  • Best way to do a full backup of MBA Mid 2011?

What is the best way to do a full backup of my Mid 2011 MBA running 10.8.4?

    rdfNaresh wrote:
Actually, this is a reply to all respnders:
My apologies for not clearly specifying purpose of full backup.
I would like to make a full backup of my MBA from which to restore in case of a problem. I am planning to do some clean up of my machine and want to have the ability to restore in case I inadvertently do something that will cause a problem.
Regarding Time Machine, I have had problems with that application and I am baffled by some of its behavior and lack of clear documentation of its terminology.
    OK.
The disadvantage of a clone is that it only contains a copy of the drive at the time the clone was made, so if you need to restore the drive the clone must be up to date. Carbon Copy can be set to incrementally update on a schedule of your choice (I do it every day). The update tends to be quick however as only changed or new files need to be copied.
Time Machine if used as designed will always be up to date, so it has an advantage for long term backup.
As a backup system a clone is not adequate on its own, it lacks versioning (the ability to recover an earlier version of the file than the current, or last backed up version)
I prefer clones for disaster recovery, and Time Machine (or a similar alternative) for backup, I also keep long term archives for files that I do not want to lose regardless of age.

  • Has anyone actually used the Apple USB "rescue" drive on a 2011 MBA or Mac Mini?

I am getting conflicting information as to whether the $69.00 Lion USB "Rescue drive" will function on a mid 2011 MacBook Air or a Mid 2011 Mac Mini. (Yes, I know it will work on the 2011 MacBook Pros).
    1) The local Apple Store Genius Bar personell say that it will not work. It has 10.7.0 Build 11A511, and the 2011 MBA's and Mac Mini's require at least 10.7.0 Build 11A2063 and 11A20621, respectively.
    2) Several people have answered this question in the Q&A section of the online Apple Store that it will work on a mid 2011 MBA.
    3) I contacted Apple, via the Chat system within the online Apple Store, and they are kinda sure that it will work. But in any case, if I were to get it to work it would ace my recovery partition, and forever NEVER let me use a recovery partition on that Mac again.
So, I am left with the most reasonable avenue to obtain a correct answer. I ask if anyone has sucessfully used this drive on a mid 2011 MBA or mid 2011 Mac Mini.

Given the nature of backups, my recommendation has always been to use a strategy that is unequivocally supported by Apple. As you already determined Apple Support unequivocally informed you that your proposal will not work, unless your router is an Apple AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule.
The exhaustive list of devices supported by Time Machine amounts to the following:
AirPort Time Capsule's built-in hard disk (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to a Time Capsule (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to an AirPort Extreme (current model only)
A hard disk drive directly connected to your Mac
    That is all.
Use whatever backup device you want, but you should be aware that this site is full of reports of misery from hapless individuals who had been using NAS devices for Time Machine backups, only to find that they were incomplete, corrupted, or useless when they were required. Apple won't care if you lose your data while using a Time Machine configuration specifically excluded from their technical support documents.

  • Macbook Air (Mid 2011) Wired/Wireless DHCP issues

    All,
I have been attempting to fix a nagging problem with my brand new MBA 'Ultimate' - while at home it connects fine wirelessly and I do not experience any issues (note this is the first SSID it has ever connected to) I have not been able to connect to my office's wireless - I do not pull a DHCP address or connect. In an attempt to rule out the wireless issues everyone has, I purchased the 10/100 Apple RJ-45 (ethernet) adapter and have attempted this morning to connect via a known working patch cable.
The wired connection fails to pull a DHCP address as well!
I have followed wifiguru's posts and attempted to disable the firewall, reset the SMC, reset the PRAM, delete the offending plists, changed the network order, etc.
I do not believe my issue lies on my computer network as multiple other iOS and OSX devices can connect (that are Lion as well)
Admittedly, I have not attempted to go to another third party wireless location (Starbucks, McD's, etc) but for the wired connection to fail as well and my home wireless (802.11n) connection to work leads me to think I am missing something. I do not believe I should have to reboot my work's wireless router to accept me as a client as well - especially since the wired does not connect.
    Any thoughts?
    Cliffs:
    - mid-2011 MBA Ultimate
    - wireless works at home network (802.11n) - gets DHCP address
    - wireless doesn't work at work (802.11b/g) - no DHCP address
    - wired doesn't work at work (apple adapter) - no DHCP address
    - firewall off/on doesn't matter
    - deleted problematic plists, no change
I also feel I should add, I'm not computer illiterate by any stretch of the imagination and have used OSX products in the past.

    Really?
    No input at all?

  • Will Mid-2011 Macbook Air support OpenCL?

Does anyone here know if the Mid 2011 MBA support OpenCL? BTW, where I could find the more information? Thanks.

I have the same issue but did a little research and found out why our mid 2011 won't work.  Go to your Apple Icon and system report and look for Bluetooth.  Look at the LMP Version (on my Mac it is 4.0) and it must be 6.0 to work for Handoff.  I am now trying to find out if there is any way to upgrade this on my Mac because it seems a little crazy to buy a new Mac for just this when I still have extended warranty on my existing Mac.  Does anyone know if it is possible to upgrade Bluetooth?

After plugging in external speakers that failed, my iMac (mid 2011) will not output any sound through internal or external speakers. I am currently in a country with no authorized Apple service centers. Any ideas about what I can do to test and diagnose?
I have checked all the usual places for sound being on mute as well as in Systems Prefrences\Sound. Thanks in advance for any input/ideas. It may be a while before I can get it serviced by a professional, if need be.

Open Audio MIDI Setup and select the Audio Devices window. Select Built-In Output from the list on the left.
Make sure the format is 44100 HZ and 2ch 24bit if the settings are not that set them that way and try your audio.
Also in your frst post you menttioned speakers that failed. How did they fail? Were they pluged in when they failed?
