Verify Disk greyed out since 10.4.8

Since upgrading some G4's to 10.4.8, I no longer can verify the startup disk when started up from the startup disk. Verify is greyed out. I was so pleased to have this function in Tiger. It allowed me to at least check for problems without starting up from another drive.
This week I configured a new 17 inch macbook for someone and could not do a verify there either, brand new 10.4.8 disk came with the computer. When I started up off of a 10.4.7 intel partition on a firewire drive I could verify the firewire drive fine as it was the startup.
I want to update my mini to 10.4.8 but don't want to lose the verify feature. Any ideas or answers welcome and thank you.
Intel Dual Mac-Mini, G4 Powerbook, G4-933 Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The answer to my question is if journaling is turned off, you can't verify the disk. Turn on journaling and verify becomes an option. I think you can only toggle journaling if the disk is formatted in extended rather than extended (journaled).

I'm running 10.4.9 & have everything updated except for the recent Pro App. I wanted to verify my disk before installing this when I noticed that the button was greyed out! I click on my hard drive, I click on my disk & it's still greyed out!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I never use the Verify Disk feature from my boot volume which can report a problem that doesn't exist when later running Repair Disk via Disk Utility when booted from your install disc.
If a problem is reported when selecting Verify Disk via Disk Utility from your boot volume, you will need to do the repair when booted from your Tiger install disc anyway so best all around to go ahead and do this from the outset, select your language and at the Installer menu bar, navigate to Disk Utility. Select your boot volume in the drives and volumes window which is usually Macintosh HD and under the First Aid tab, select Repair Disk.
Selecting Repair Disk does a Verify first anyway and if a problem is discovered attempts to make the repair so running Verify Disk first or instead of Repair Disk only each time does not gain anything.

You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • Repair disk greyed out?

this may be a no-brainer, but i'm stumped. i recently installed Tiger onto one of my disk partitions (i'll refer to the partition as 'B") so that i could use DiskWarrior to repair the startup disk ("A").
Prior to this, when I was running DW off the CD it was taking very long, appeared to hang on step 6 for 24 hours.
the workaround worked great, repaired the disk in a matter of minutes.
now however, i'm not sure if i've altered my system configuration.
i was a bit freaked when after installing Tiger on the partition it restarted with the partition "B" as the startup. i changed the startup back to the original "A" and thought all was well.
now however, i think i've noticed another change.
in disk utility, the "repair disk" button is greyed out for "A"
"A" shows Verify Disk Permissions, Repair Disk Permissions, and Verify Disk as options but NOT Repair Disk
"B" however allows for all the options
(Side note, I have 2 other partitions as well, now they only offer "Verify" and "Repair Disk", whereas I'm certain they used to allow for all options previously. Also, I've added an external HD during these changes. Maybe that's a factor?)
Many thanks if anyone has any thoughts. This resource is truly indispensible!

I know DW takes a looooooong time to run. I've never seen it take 24hrs.
DiskWarrior has an update for Tiger, You might check to see if you are using the newest version for DW.
sometimes the computer sees whatever version your Mac has on its various drives and chooses the newest version to startup.
I have 3 HD's an ext 40GB, a 120GB, and the original 80GB drive the Mac came with. OS9.2.2 on the 120GB, OSX 10.2.7 on the 40GB. and the main drive has OSX 10.3.9. I am sure Tiger works similar, the computer will make a choice to boot up with the newest OS, unless you tell it which OS to boot with. I may very well be wrong... just my observation from trial and error.
I aim to remove my 10.2.7 when I get Tiger in next few months. consolidate my 9.2.2 & 10.3.9 on the 120GB and put Tiger brand new on the 80GB.
So if things never work right, I can always reboot onto the old Panther.
Of course when moving OSX system, always use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper, unless you like installing the OSX brand new everytime. OS9 is not as anal retentive.
Verify/Repair Permissions is Very different from Verify/Repair Disk.
your Disk Repair thing will never repair the startup/boot disk. If you are want here is good way to go...
Boot off your OSX install discs. When it gets to the Install screen it asks what langauage you wish to install. Goto the File Menu and choose to Quit the installer. normally is an Option to use the Disk Utility. Then You should be able to Verify and Repair disk all you want on both Partitions without issue.
Non-OSX disks will not allow Verify/Repair Permissions, but you can Verify/Repair Disk to hearts content on them.

  • Why is the "Manage" tab on the top greyed out since I updated to ver 2.3 ?

    Hi!
Since I updated to Muse version 2.3 the "Manage" option on the top, next to publish, is not working, even though my Business Catalyst is properly set up and payments processed etc. Inspite of publishing the site several times, the "Manage" option is still greyed out! Help will be really appreciated.
    Thanks a lot !

    Hello Arti,
Deleting the AdobeMuse folder should not affect the data.
Please tell me are you working on Mac or Windows?
In case it is mac, you can use Go>Go to folder and type in there ~//Library/Preferences/ and reach the Preferences folder to find AdobeMuse folder there.
As a work around, you can also use the link below to visit your website admin console :

  • Disk Utility "Verify Disk" Grayed Out

Disk Utility's "Verify Disk" button is always grayed out on my iMac 10.4.11.
It is not grayed out on my iBook 10.4.1.
Both machines have Disk Utility Version 10.5.6 (198.12).
    Any ideas?

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.

  • Time Machine restore issue - 'connect to remote disk' greyed out

I'm having trouble restoring my MacBook Pro from a time machine backup on a Buffalo network drive.
I boot up my MacBook Pro from the original Mac OS X Install DVD that came with the machine.  Using the Disk Utility the MBP hard drive has been re-formatted.  I then select 'restore' from a time machine back up copy from the utilities menu.  However, as soon as I get to the screen 'searching for time machine backups' I cannot proceed any further as the 'connect to remote disk' button is greyed out so I cannot select the network drive.
I have restored the machine several times before from the network drive and its always worked fine.  I just cannot figure out at all what is going wrong this time and why the 'connect to remote disk' button is greyed out.  Nothing has changed from a previous restore I performed a week or so ago.  The network drive is up and running fine (not that that is particularly relevant as I can't even get to the stage of actually searching for the network drive).
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It sounds like something in your installation of OSX was corrupted, and got backed-up. So when you restore, you're restoring the problem.
Your best bet is probably to do an +Erase and Install+ of Leopard, then use +Setup Assistant+ when your Mac restarts to transfer all your users, data, apps, and settings from the backups. See #19 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Then download and install the "combo" update, to get back to 10.5.8. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.

  • Is it worth paying to have iphone 4s fixed after wifi greyed out

Hi all my iphone 4s isnt connecting to wifi greyed out  since updating ios7 tryed all troubleshooting tips etc its 15 mths old so not covered but after contacting apple i can send it for repair for €211 this seems harsh seens its their fault issue only started due to the update have read why , read loads discussions and so many with same problem So have repair set up is it even worth it  or as anyone done this what was outcome ??

Some folks think the problem is due to poor solder connections of the WiFi chip on the card. Heating may expand the joints to cause temporary connectivity. The chip itself could be of low tolerance, and the iOS update causes it to fail the threshold. If you have tried the software resets, then the cure is to reflow the solder of the chip to the WiFi card, or to replace the WiFi card. Apple will not "own" this problem, even though it seems to be widespread. Apple offers to renew your contract for a new iPhone at $199. Certain repair shops will tackle this problem, although many local shops will not. In the US try iFix Miami Beach. See them on eBay <http://www.ebay.com/itm/iPhone-4S-Grayed-Out-Wifi-Wireless-Fix-Repair-Service-Tr usted-Specialists-/161160765436?ssPageName=ADME:L:OU:US:1120> for a $69 fix. They fixed my iPhone 4S and returned within a week (even over the Memorial Day holiday weekend). In Europe, I have read about, but have not tried PodMod <http://www.podmod.org> Hope this helps.

  • Use this mailbox for greyed out in Mail 7

Since upgrading to Mavericks (and Mail 7) I can no longer assign the sent messages folder in Mail.  My IMAP provider uses a "sent items" folder under the inbox which I had previously used Mailbox->Use This Mailbox For->Sent to get it synced correctly across all my devices.  Unfotunately all options under Use This Mailbox For are greyed out since upgrading to Mavericks.  This is the same for all my IMAP email accounts.  I am able to change the settings on my iOS devices but no joy on my mac.  Any advice would be much appreciated.

I'm sorry it didn't work for you. I'm not sure but I think I deleted the account from the Internet Accounts preference pane instead of from Mail's preferences. Could that make a difference?
Anyway for me the behaviour isn't consistent at all. In three IMAP accounts one does't have the problem at all, one shows the "Use This Mailbox For" options "Sent" and "Junk" selectable and the other two greyed out, and for one account only "Junk" is selectable.
    Strange.
The two accounts that have the problem are from the German provider Strato. Though I don't think it is a provider issue.

  • 10.9.4 no folder background change, its greyed out

10.9.4 no folder background change, its greyed out since I updated. both computers i can't change the folder back ground color
    Thank You
    Dick

I figured it out. Under the folder actions/arange by: I changed to NONE and this allowed me to change the background color. It appeared after I did the update the Arange BY was changed.
I personally don't care for the white backround and a light grey is easier on the eyes. I wish that the background color be change dglobally for all folders no matter what the arange would be. Te ac only allows this on folders with icons.
    Thank you for the response.

  • I have an external hard drive that shows up in disk utility but Verify and Restore are greyed out.

I have an external hard drive that shows up in disk utility but Verify and Restore are greyed out. I am trying to determine what is wrong with the drive.
I need the data on the drive and it won't show up in Disk Warrior. I have tried different Mac's and different USB cords only to find the same outcome. When selected in Disk Utility the information read as such...
Disk Description : WD Elements 1023 Media                      Total Capacity : 500.11 GB (500,105,740,288 Bytes)
Connection Bus : USB                                                               Write Status : Read/Write
Connection Type : External                                                     S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported
USB Serial Number : 575837314135304D36373132        Partition Map Scheme : Unformatted
As the drive shows in Disk Utility there must be some life left in it surely. There is a possibilty that the physical connection between the USB cord and the external drive is damaged but since the drive shows up I believe it's unlikely... before I give it to the pro's is there anything else I can do to diagnose the issue?

    Hello,
I have just experienced the same thing!
Although my external drive shows in Disk Utility, it does not show in Finder.
And the Verify/Repair buttons are also greyed out.
Also, although the drive is 2TB. DU shows it as having Total Capacity of only 4.14GB! (Which should be the Free Space).
I was wondering if you solved your problem, & if so, would you share your solution.
I´m afraid to Erase in case I lose all my Data on the drive.
Thanks in advance for your reply!

  • Nearly all Disk Utility options are greyed out. I just want to wipe dvd-RWs.

I have been searching for a few months for a solution, I finally decided to post my problem.
I have many rewritable disks that I would like to reuse. However, my disk utility is utterly worthless as nearly every option is greyed out. Only the "verify disk" option is available on any of the disks on the left column. All I want is to be able to erase my disks (or not even erase, just burn over them!), yet my disk utility does next to nothing.
I currently run 10.8.3 Mountain Lion, yet I had this problem at least since lion, and possibly snow leopard.
    Thanks all,
    Hazzard V

Can you post a screen shot of what you're seeing in Disk Utility?
I just tried it with a DVD-RW which shows no files, except that I know there are some on it.

    Joel,
You are probably going to find that booting to the install disk and running Disk Utility that way isn't going to help any further that "fsck" did. In fact, there is no difference between the command line "fsck" and Disk Utility's "Repair Disk" routine.
What you have is a disk error that Disk Utility cannot fix. In most cases, Disk Utility will tell you that it cannot repair a particular error, if such is the case. In rare cases (lke yours), however, Disk Utility or fsck will report that repairs were made, when in fact they were not. I recommend that you do go ahead and make the attempt, but I am betting that you find the error still exists.
Disk Warrior may have better success in making the repair, if you want to pay for it.
However, you should be aware that files are likely to have been damaged by the disk error, and even a successful repair of the file system cannot replace any data that has been lost. In other words, any critical system files that are currently damaged will remain so, and any problems you are experiencing as a result of the damaged files will still exist.
Unfortunately, the only way to fix these damaged files is to format and reinstall, preferably "zeroing" the drive in the process. Since this necessitates making a good backup first, that should be your biggest concern right now.
If you know how to go about making a comprehensive backup, and are able to do so now, that is what I recommend you do. If you have difficulty making a backup as a result of the disk error, Disk Warrior may be able to help, and it might be worth laying out the cash for it. If, however, you have no problems making a backup, Disk Warrior (and its cost) would be uneccessary, IMO.
    Scott
