Verify Permissions FAIL - What?

Apologies, I have a few other posts up, which are probably related to this.
Noy sure if this is the best place to post.
I installed larger HDs in my 2001 Quicksilver. I used 160Gb drives of which 128Gb gets used.
Used "SuperDuper" to copy drives, and verified & repaired Permissions. All went well.
Now with the new drives installed I've encountered problems with Mail, (Do Not Localize), and iTunes, (The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission for this file), which I think are related to problems with Permissions.
When I attempt to verify or repair permissions on my "new" Macintosh HD drive, I get the error message: +"Reading The permissions database can take several minutes. ERROR: The underlying task reported failure on exit. Permissions verification complete"+ Same happens if I try to repair permissions.
Can anyone suggest what's happening and what I can do about it?
Is my only option to re-install OS10.5 from the install disc, and then upgrade to the latest OS10.5?
Thoughts and comments welcome. And many thanks as always.

One possibility would be to do a +Repair Disk+ (not permissions).
You can't do this using the version of Disk Utility in your Applications/Utilities folder, because you can't repair the disk you're booted from.
So insert your Leopard Install disc, and start up while holding down the "C" key. This will take a few minutes.
Select your language at the prompt, then on the next screen, Utilities from the Menubar, then +Disk Utility+ and try the +Repair Disk+ from there.
If it can't repair everything, try again until it does, or makes no progress.
If it's still not repaired, you might try a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app, like DiskWarrior (about $100). Otherwise, your only choices are to erase the disk and reinstall, or there may be a problem with the disk itself.

  • Verify permissions failed: Framework unable to communicate with the Disk Management daemon

I'm experiencing problems with the Disk Management daemon on my MBPro Retina running Mountain Lion 10.8.2. I discovered it first when I tried to enable file vault and received the "Framework unable to communicate with the Disk Management daemon" error message.
So I started up Disk Utilities (which started fine) and tried to run Verify Disk Permissions. It failed with the following errror message:
"Verify permissions failed: Framework unable to communicate with the Disk Management daemon"
So I booted in to safe mode and tried Verify Disk Permissions again with the same results.
So I booted in to the recovery partition to run Disk Utilities. It ran fine and the Verify Disk Permissions found some errors which I then fixed.
I re-booted normally but am still experiencing the same behavior.
I have turned off my anti-virus (Sophos) to no effect.
I checked the console and found the following message:
12/6/12 3:27:02.828 PM Disk Utility[157]: *** WARNING: Method userSpaceScaleFactor in class NSWindow is deprecated on 10.7 and later. It should not be used in new applications. Use convertRectToBacking: instead.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Verify permissions failed: insufficient privileges

When I use disk utility I get this message: Verify permissions failed: insufficient privileges.
How do I get this fixed?

I was able to get the permissions to work, but then when I did a verify disk and disk repair it told me that I needed to erase (which I assume is reformatting) the disk which is in progress.  I had a backup clone of my start up disk that I am using now.  The systm is running faster with this backup drive.
I am doing the 7 step erase to erase everything that was on the disk.  My question has to do whether this will resolve the issues I had and allow the original iMac drive work faster and better.
My machine is a 24 inch, Early 2008, 3.06 GHZ intel core 2 Duo running Lion on it.
Or should I be looking at new iMac or mini mac?  I use ipad as my laptops.
    Thanks

After repairing permissions, in Mac OS X, I ask the utility to verify permissions again and the same problems are shown, as if I had not repaired anything. What's happening?

What you are seeing are messages. It's ok.. it won't do any good to repeatedly repair permissions. As long as you see Repair Permissions Complete when it's finished, you are good to go.
Also, if you see any messages that say: SUID: That can be ignored.
Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore
Keep in mind, the only time you need to repair permissions is for troubleshooting.

  • Verified Permissions...what does this mean?

I've been having a lot of performance issues lately so I ran a verify permissions but don't understand it. Any ideas, and what is "derby"?
    Verify permissions for “Macintosh HD”
    Permissions differ on "usr/share/derby", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are lrwxr-xr-x .
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Permissions differ on "Library/Application Support/Apple/ParentalControls", should be drwxrwxr-x , they are drwxr-xr-x .

Sure, my Macbook Pro has been running hot after I did one of the SL updates. Ever since my temps increased my performance has slowed. I have done all of the resets and nothing has helped. My MBP also has that nagging blinking display issue. I get beach balls in almost every application. I work a lot on browsers and iPhoto. In iPhoto I have lost the ability to create a slideshow and when I hit the slideshow button to just play one it does nothing, however when I click on something else later it fades to black like it was going to start the slideshow but then of course I've moved on and so does iPhoto. Programs are quirky, computer is slow and hot. Everything is just kind of out of whack.

  • Can't update to newest version. Keep getting message update failed. When I try to install the downloaded version get message I don't have permissions. What's up with that?

Can't install latest version of Firefox. Continue to get message "update failed". When I try to install a downloaded version get message that I don't have the proper permissions. What' up with that?

If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 5.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded

  • What does ACL mean in Verify Permissions?

I have been having problems since upgrading from Panther to Leopard on December 12 of 08. I think I have the majority of them addressed... I am running the disk utility and verifying and repairing permissions 2 times per month, emptying caches almost every day, and zapping the PRAM in order to address constant freeze-ups on startup... sometimes at the blue screen and sometimes the wheel just keeps turning, turning, turning, etc., but it still happens daily. Any ideas why on this one?
Now I am getting this message when verifying permissions:
ACL found, but not expected on "Applications/Utilities"
ACL found, but not expected on "Applications"
ACL found, but not expected on "Library"
What does ACL mean and why is it not expected?
Any answers? It would be appreciated.

Hi! Most have found that if they download the new combo update and reapply the update the acl messages in repair permissions disappear and the report will be clean for the first time. Tom

  • Verify Disk failed for Time Machine backup disk

Thread <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7930301&#7930301> discussed a similar issue, but it was closed without an answer so I'm opening a new one.
After a power failure I ran Disk Utility to Repair Permissions on my boot disk and Verify Disk on another that I use to store media files; neither had significant problems. Then I ran Verify Disk (verify, not repair; and disk, not permissions) on my Time Machine backup disk. It started spitting out the errors shown below. The time remaining counted up to 16 minutes, but wasn't coming down very fast so I left it running overnight. My machine is set to not sleep or spin down the disks. The next evening it was down to 12 minutes left, and was still spitting out the same errors. The second evening it was done, having failed out as shown in this log file excerpt:

Upon the 2nd restart the system booted and seems to be OK, but I'm leery of running another Verify Disk.
What's going on? Are those errors anything to worry about? Is it possible to run Verify Disk on a Time Machine backup disk? What about Repair Disk?

Any time Disk Utility says you need to repair a disk, you need to repair it. Period.
So run it. If it fails to repair everything, run it again (and again) until it either repairs everything or can't repair any more. If it can't repair it, post back and we'll discuss options.
There's no point in running +Verify Disk+ on an external drive; just run +Repair Disk.+ The only time +Verify Disk+ is needed is for your internal HD (because you can't repair the disk you're running from).
And you need to do that again because of the forced power-down. Any time there's an abnormal shutdown, it's possible the file system on your internal HD can be damaged. Usually it isn't, but it's possible. If that says you need to repair it, you'll have to boot from your Leopard Install disc and use it's copy of DU. Post back if you need to do this but don't know how.

  • Constant problem when verifying permissions

    file:///.file/id=6904044.218267Whenever I verify permissions I get this.
    Permissions differ on “Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are drwxr-xr-x .
Even after I repair them and clear history, verifiying disk permissions brings the exact same problem up without fail. Any ideas whats wrong?

Nothing's wrong. The package's structure was changed in an update, and the permissions database expected it to have its original structure.

  • Cannot verify permissions from Disk Utility

I'm a new Mac user, and I've undoubtedly deleted or moved files to incorrect places.
I can run DU and verify my disk, which appears to be okay, but when I choose the Verify Permissions tab, I get the message that permissions validation failed because "there are "no valid packages." After 23 years of PC use, I can't fathom this arcane message.

You probably haven't, unless you've been in the system files on the hard drive.
Are you trying to repair permissions because something is wrong? or just as regular maintenance?
If you've selected the Hard Drive from the panel on the left - and it's the correct Hard Drive rather than a partition it should repair.
You could try starting up from your install DVD1. As soon as you get to a menu at the top - go to utilities and run Disk Utility from there and see if you can repair.
No valid packages would indicate no OSX on the drive.
Hope that helps. Get back and we'll work it out.
    Best of luck.

If "no valid packages would indicate no OSX on the drive," how would my system be running without an OS. I realize this sounds like "duh," but I'm serious. I will try booting from DVD1 tomorrow and see what happens

  • Verify volume failed with error Could not unmount disk!!

Im having weird things with my fw lacie 200gb. I come across these weird white cubes which pop up in the search mode in finder. So i tried to repair permissions of the Lacie disc and i get this sign
Verify volume failed with error Could not unmount disk
    What is this?
What are those white cubes in the finder?

    Hi gizeh12!
Are you able to verify the volume of the disc (not permissions)? It could possibly be some bad/corrupt sectors on the drive. Is it a white box with a dashed line outline? Does the file size show the accurate value in "Get Info" when you click on the file?
Are those files somewhere else as well?

  • Verify Operation Failed and Other Issues

Adobe Reader X 10.1.1 is not working correctly on my computer which is running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3. I have several symptoms.
    1. If I am able to open a pdf file on my hard drive I get this error message:
       “Verify operation failed.”
I hit OK and can read the document fine.
    2. Many pdf files on my hard drive will not open. I get the error message:
“There was an error opening this document. There was a problem reading this document (57).”
I doubt the document is corrupt because I can email them to my coworkers and they can open it.
    3. I can open any document inside of Internet Explorer 8. I get the error message:
“There is a problem with Adobe Acrobat/Reader. If it is running, please exit and try again (0:104)”
It wasn’t running and trying again won’t help. Usually I download the file and try to open it and if I can't I email to a co-worker and continue on. But now I need to fill out a form online that uses a pdf but I can't download it. What can I do now?
I have uninstalled and reinstalled twice with no success.  I suspect the root problem is the “Verify operation failed.”
    Any ideas.

I found a work around. It requires Foxit Reader, which is free.
Option 1: If you can't open a (.pdf) file in Internet Explorer because it insists on using Adobe Reader which fails on your computer for whatever reason, sometimes you can right click on the link itself and select “Save Target As” which will save the (.pdf) to your hard drive and then you can open it with Foxit Reader. If the file that it tries to save is something other than a (.pdf) such as an (.htm) then try option 2 below.
Option 2: If the “Save Target As” option isn't available, or it tries to save a file type (.htm), then click on the link anyway and let Adobe Reader try and open it. If it fails, the URL to the (.pdf) file should be in the Internet Explorer/Adobe Reader address bar. Copy the URL, open Foxit reader, go to File - Open, then paste the URL of the (.pdf) into the File Name textbox on the Open File pop-up screen and hit "Open".
I've tried changing the default (.pdf) reader to Foxit but sometimes the link to the (.pdf) still insists on using Adobe. Even if I try to use FireFox and Foxit together, there are some (.pdf) links that won't use anything but Adobe.
Sorry Adobe but I don't think it's your software, I think something is wrong with Windows on this computer.

  • Running "verify permissions" in Disk Utility freezes the Macbook

Ever since I received my new Macbook, whenever I try to run the Disk Utility's "verify permissions", the system freezes up. Disk Utility seems to freeze, and I cannot interact with anything on the computer anymore. The mouse remains functional, but I cannot click on any other applications, change focus or even force quit.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I always thought it was a bad idea to repair permissions from a disk other than the startup disk if you had updated the OS from what is on the install DVDs.
Don't bother with verifying permissions as it takes as long as repairing them. Have you tried a straight repair of them instead? How about running that from a program like Cocktail?

  • Verifying permissions freezes.

Booting from the install disk, running disk utility. Verify permissions and repair permissions never complete. Disk repair says, disk ok. What gives?

I ran the tasks for about twenty minutes per option (verify/repair). Runs with a full continues bar, not a fill as it completes process bar. I will run the tasks overnight and see what happens. I'll keep the mac from sleeping but will turn off the screen. Will run off power outlet.
    Will report back.
    Thanks

  • Verify Permissions Results don't stick

well, ok ... hen is it not an issue that despite permissions being listed as fixed, that they appear, once again, to be the same errors?
I mean, if it's insignificant, then I'll not worry about "why" it does that ... and move on in trying to fix the original problem ... of which you are familiar anyway.
    thanks Ray.
