Verify/Repair permissions greyed on External discs

Hi
Since I updated to Mountain Lion, the option to verify or repair permissions are greyed in the 2 external discs. Only the option verify disc is available to use.
When I pass the cursor over the unavailable buttons, a message shows :
Check if it were set the right permissions to all files and folders installed by apple.
Not available because selected disk is set to ignore ownership
One of the disc only have videos and I checked info. And there was a check in ignore ownership. I already unchecked, but it remains unavailable to verify/repair permissions.
The other is time machine and it has not that option.
I already formatted the external disc from OSX and created a fresh partition.

What do you mean by that ? I made a clean install of Snow Leopard and then upgrade to Mountain Lion.
I made the verify permissions before the upgrate and after the upgrade. In snow leopard there was a lot of permissions to repair and even after repaired, they still remain there when I made a 2º check.
Then I upgrade to Mountain Lion and made a verify permissions and only one permission appeared to repair (...javaappletplguin.plugin). Did I do anything wrong ?

Do 2nd Harddrives have Verifiable/Repairable Permissions?

Hello all,
When running Disk Utility, I cannot choose to verify/repair permissions on my 2nd, non-OS harddrive, even after verifying the disk. The HD is an internal SATA drive, just like the OS disk. I thought (still think?) this was normal, but then someone mentioned verifying permissions on an Ipod. If you can verify permissions on an iPod, I should be able to verify/repair my Media HD.
What do you think? Is there some steps I should take (short of reformatting) my 2nd HD to make it verifiable? If you cannot repair permission on a non-OS disk, what is the point of having the option to repair permissions in Disk Utility on the OS disk (as you are supposed to repair permissions from the OS installer DVD).

Permissions Repair are another matter, that you are mistaking with Disk Repair.
~ Permissions Repair can be done when booted from the same boot volume, because it is only about comparing default system files with (hopefully not) modified or corrupted ones.
~ Disk Repair has to be done while booted from another volume, because it's about taking care of the entire volume structure in many ways that involve not only the simple system file level.
_iPod or external HD dedicated for storage only:_
Now if it's about Disk Repair, yes you can do it, and it's a good idea to do it.

Verify/Repair permissions dimmed

Disk utility/verify/repair permissions are dimmed - maybe resulting from some new programmes downloaded recently. I have been able to verify/repair disk in installation option but this has not resolved the problem. All appears to work but obviously I would prefer to correct this little matter.I have some (but not a lot of) knowledge so hope the solution is going to be easy. I would prefer not to have to re-install OSX for obvious reasons.

first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
Are you sure you mean "Repair permissions"? Mind that you have 2 options in disk utility:
1. Repair disk
2. Repair permissions
In order to repair the disk you have to boot from the install CD or another bootable volume.
Repair permissions should be done when booted from the hard disk.
In both cases make sure you select the disk in the left sidebar.

Plz help...problem w/ verify/repair permissions after software update

I just ran the software update from the Mac menu and wanted to verify/repair permissions afterwards. First I used Onyx and when it was executing, the system would not respond after a couple of minutes. So then I tried Disk Utility and I get a message saying "Disk Utility internal error: Disk Utility has losts its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility." And I did, and the same message appears.
What else can I do?

Have just done software download - gone to repair permissions and have got same message. Running on 10.3.9. Anyone any ideas as to what is going on here. Did NOT run repair permissions before the update (Yes I know I should have done). Could this be a factor. There are a number of other threads on this forum concerning this exact problem - but so far have found no explanation or solutions.
Disk varified and reported OK. Mac seems to be operating OK. How does Disk utility "link" to Disk Management Tool?

Can I always repair permissions from the install disc, even after updates?

Does anyone know if I can always repair permissions properly from my original install disc that came with my iMac thats 10.4.1. I now am 10.4.3 and was wondering if things change with every update rendering the install disc out of date for permission repair.
I read some where on the internet that after you update from the original OS you should just use disc utility. I know nothing about this sort of thing, any help on this and the types of utilities I might need would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe this is dumb, but what do you mean by don't believe the hype on permissions repair.
are you talking about the posting I read about not being able to continuously update and boot from the original OS disks, or that repairing permissions is overated as far as system maintanence.
I get a lot of conflicting advise on system maintanence. Thats why I ask this. I'm fairly new to macs and how to keep them going problem free.

Can anyone please explain to me what Verifying / Repairing Disk permissions actually does? I've heard people tell me it is like de-fragging in Windows....but I'm really curious what exactly is happening.
I'd also like to know how often doing this is a good idea. Should I always verify AND repair? Which one first? Someone help me out...

I never Verify. I just Repair.
I think Verify is a waste of time!
It should be run before & after any upgrades, updates, or installation of applications or programs.

Is it important to verify/repair permissions periodically?

I'm having issues with my superdrive on my MBP reading disks and I read somewhere that verifying and repairing permissions might help. I'm verifying now and it's found a lot of incongruencies...is it important that I repair these? I've never done this before. Should I be doing this once a month or...?

Can I repair permissions on an external RAID1

I have an external RAID1 set that has permissions set to Read & Write, all categories, Ignore ownership is turned on. Intended for data storage only. When I copy a folder of files to this RAID, the files in the folder wind up with "No Access" permissions under the Group and Others categories. I am trying to get these files to take on the permissions of the drive itself, which is R&W but can't find out how. The Ignore ownership is supposed to correct this but doesn't. I started Disk Utility on the Boot Drive and tried to repair permissions on the RAID set but no luck, repair permissions does not highlight. Does repair permissions work on a RAID1 drive? Any other thoughts on why the individual files in the folders do not take on the R&W attributes of the drive?

You could use folder actions to change the permissions on a file that you dropped on your external hard drive. I believe you will it need to place an action on each folder that you drop a file on.
first, you need to have the AppleScript program in the correct folder.
"/Library/Scripts/Folder Action Scripts/"
Also, shown in the pull-down below.
second, you need to enable folder actions by clicking on the box.
third third, you need to pick a folder and assign the AppleScript.

Verify/repair permissions grayed out in disk utility

I recently replaced my main hard drive and now when I go into Disk Utility the option to verify and repair disk permissions is not available on the other drives that were in the machine before the upgrade
I am thinking it's a permission issue but not sure what needs to be set to fix it

No problem. It puzzled me for a while. Now I check it every time I format a drive since DU doesn't correctly set the permissions needed. It's a pain that when you clone one startup drive to another, say for backup, and erase the destination in advance that the drive's ownership and permissions will be wrong. Then you try repairing permissions like the OP did and find those options are grayed out, and you are staring at the monitor trying to figure out why. PITA.

Disk Utility unable to Verify/Repair Permissions since this week's update

Hey there folks- I am experiencing some software problems with certain apps not launching (I understand it is an issue with QT now but am not clear on how to revert... Help?) and naturally panicked a bit.
I went into Disk Utility and tried to Repair Permissions.
Starts checking and then claims to lose connection and that I need to quit it and relaunch. This, of course, tells me that I am about to corrupt the disk and will "pay" for it (not seriously but feels like it!).
Anyone know what I can do to fix this as I really cannot, this minute, afford to reformat as I am working flat out with the machine.
So- review- unable to repair permissions and sometimes the machine runs slower than usual on the net as well as no longer launching some applications. Missing a few too but I can live with that!
Any help VERY gratefully received.

As for QT- I hear tell that it can interfere with the running of applications and I certainly had a lot more than just Disk Utility fail on me. Stuff APPEARS to launch and then just stops after a few bounces of the icon on the dock.
Of course that TOO began only after the update.
I have to say- if it weren't for your calming influence I'd have freaked by now. I mean- how can we trust the updates if they cause such agro?!

Messed up permissions, then fixed but now disk utility repair perm greyed..

So I had changed ownership and permissions on an eternal drive, then couldnt see it so I typed the following in terminal to fix:
chmod 775 "/Volumes/volumename/"
That worked, but now when I go into disk utility, both the verify and the repair disk permissions are greyed out on that drive.
Any ideas?

Those commands will only be available if the drive has a bootable Mac OS X system. If the drive is set to ignore ownership or permissions, select it in the Finder, choose Get Info from the File menu, and turn the option off.

Post 10.5.8 Update - can't repair permissions on external HD

Just had a rocky time updating to 10.5.8 on my iMac. Install took a long time and did 2 restarts.
Once back in business, Time Machine failed to back up saying I didn't have write permissions on my external WB 160GB drive connected by USB. Checked Get Info and indeed it had changed to read only permissions. This volume had worked with TM fine since it was connected in Feb this year.
A restart restored Read/Write and TM ran successfully, but took a long time to back up 1.3GB. Thought I would do repair permissions on this drive but both Verify and Repair disk permissions are greyed out.
It may be that they've always been greyed out and I've never noticed or checked?
Can advise whether this is normal to be unable to verify/check permissions on an external USB HD please??

You cannot repair permissions on a non-startup drive because there are no permissions to repair. You can, however, repair the drive were it suffering some kind of directory failure.

Verify/Repair disk permissions hangs

Hello,
Since yesterday my SL became kind of unstable and I have to reboot it because of a hang with a spinning wheel quite often.
I want to verify/repair the disk permissions but the tasks never completes. When I run it via the GUI in the Disk Utility, it goes to around 5% then nothing happens even if I wait several hours. I can cancel the repair.
I also tried to run it via the command line but the progress stays at 0% :
~ $ sudo diskutil verifyPermissions /
Started verify/repair permissions on disk0s2 Macintosh HD
0% ...............................................
~ $ sudo diskutil repairPermissions /
Started verify/repair permissions on disk0s2 Macintosh HD

Any ideas ?

From your description it sounds like the internal HD is failing. It should be under 1 year old so you are covered by the warranty, make an appointment ASAP with your local Apple Store or AASP to bring it in. In addition if you have not purchased AppleCare now is the time to get it, AppleCare will extend your warranty to 3 years. However you must buy it buy it within the first year of ownership!

Repair disk greyed out?

this may be a no-brainer, but i'm stumped. i recently installed Tiger onto one of my disk partitions (i'll refer to the partition as 'B") so that i could use DiskWarrior to repair the startup disk ("A").
Prior to this, when I was running DW off the CD it was taking very long, appeared to hang on step 6 for 24 hours.
the workaround worked great, repaired the disk in a matter of minutes.
now however, i'm not sure if i've altered my system configuration.
i was a bit freaked when after installing Tiger on the partition it restarted with the partition "B" as the startup. i changed the startup back to the original "A" and thought all was well.
now however, i think i've noticed another change.
in disk utility, the "repair disk" button is greyed out for "A"
"A" shows Verify Disk Permissions, Repair Disk Permissions, and Verify Disk as options but NOT Repair Disk
"B" however allows for all the options
(Side note, I have 2 other partitions as well, now they only offer "Verify" and "Repair Disk", whereas I'm certain they used to allow for all options previously. Also, I've added an external HD during these changes. Maybe that's a factor?)

I know DW takes a looooooong time to run. I've never seen it take 24hrs.
DiskWarrior has an update for Tiger, You might check to see if you are using the newest version for DW.
sometimes the computer sees whatever version your Mac has on its various drives and chooses the newest version to startup.
I have 3 HD's an ext 40GB, a 120GB, and the original 80GB drive the Mac came with. OS9.2.2 on the 120GB, OSX 10.2.7 on the 40GB. and the main drive has OSX 10.3.9. I am sure Tiger works similar, the computer will make a choice to boot up with the newest OS, unless you tell it which OS to boot with. I may very well be wrong... just my observation from trial and error.
I aim to remove my 10.2.7 when I get Tiger in next few months. consolidate my 9.2.2 & 10.3.9 on the 120GB and put Tiger brand new on the 80GB.
So if things never work right, I can always reboot onto the old Panther.
Of course when moving OSX system, always use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper, unless you like installing the OSX brand new everytime. OS9 is not as anal retentive.
Verify/Repair Permissions is Very different from Verify/Repair Disk.
your Disk Repair thing will never repair the startup/boot disk. If you are want here is good way to go...
Boot off your OSX install discs. When it gets to the Install screen it asks what langauage you wish to install. Goto the File Menu and choose to Quit the installer. normally is an Option to use the Disk Utility. Then You should be able to Verify and Repair disk all you want on both Partitions without issue.
Non-OSX disks will not allow Verify/Repair Permissions, but you can Verify/Repair Disk to hearts content on them.

Then I sometimes get the brown screen that states,You must re-start your computer.
I have already zeroed out the hard drive and re-installed Panther and the upgrade Tiger disc.
I repair permissions using the Tiger disc upgrade.
Can anyone help me with this??

One thing to note... When running Repair Disk Permissions, it is best to run it while started up normally, from your normal startup disk, not from a Mac OS X installation disc. The only time you should run it while started up from an installation disc is if some problem is preventing you from starting up normally. OTOH, Repair Disk can only be used when starting up from a different disk (such as an installation disc).
So, I would start up normally, run Disk Utility, and use Repair Disk Permissions on your normal startup disk.
NOTE: Repair Disk Permissions often gives alerts messages that can be ignored. They are more "informational," not serious errors.

You should still run it periodically. When you run it, what needs to be repaired has been repaired; consider the rest of it an FYI. I've never experience a problem, where a Repair Disk Permissions message actually caused a problem. But, if you ever get an error while running Repair Disk (or Verify Disk), that is usually a serious problem.
