Verifying which photos will be skipped BEFORE doing an import.
When doing an import, is there any way to tell which photos will be considered "duplicates" BEFORE I actually do the import? It's a little complicated to explain, but I'm in a situation where when I do an import, I sometimes end up importing photos that I thought would be skipped as duplicates. When this happens, I have to go though hundreds of photos and manually select and delete all the duplicates. If I could see that this was going to happen BEFORE doing the import -- i.e. if Lr could give me a list of photos that would be skipped before doing the import rather than after it -- I could take appropriate actions before doing the import.
Thanks,
Larry

You could set up a smart collection to pick up files with "-2" in the name.
But why the copying back and forth? Can you not keep your catalogue pointed at the central drive? If for example you need to go offline or have local copies for a while, you could use the Update Folder Location to switch the catalogued folder between your local drive or the central one. It sounds like there''s some aspect of your workflow that's making things in LR unnecessarily awkward.
John
The "-2" could pick up other files. I use dates in names, so "2009-08-20" would be picked up by the search.
Regarding the "copying back and forth," the issue stems from the fact that the "central drive" is NOT a "Lr" drive. The photos on this drive are accessed by more than one person using more than one application. This would lead to complications if I actually manipulated these photos in Lr since each person would have to constantly worry about keeping everything in sync, including making corrections or changes to the folder structure. By having a completely separate copy of everything on my own "local" drive I don't have to worry about this. I also end up with a completely "clean" backup copy of all my photos on the main drive in case anything gets corrupt in Lr (although I do also keep ANOTHER backup of my LOCAL drive, so I have multiple redundant backups.)
As I mentioned earlier, it's difficult to completely explain all the aspects of the setup, but suffice it to say that it evolved over time based on the issues that arose for us. There are a LOT of factors to consider given any particular situation (too many to even list off the top of my head), but my setup satisfies "most" of my parameters in relatively simple ways. Unfortunately, there is no way to completely resolve "every" issue (hence this thread) -- my setup is simply the best approach I've found given MY particular needs.
In other words, given all of my (our) particular needs, I don't believe that this setup is "unnecessarily" awkward. It's perhaps more complex than other setups, but given the situation of multiple people, multiple networked systems, and multiple applications, I think it's actually "relatively" straight forward.

I hit delete photos when importing from SD card to iPhoto. Lost everthing that was current. (All the old photos were still on). How can I recover my photos (taken yesterday)?
media recover - the free download will tell you what can be recovered - you have to purchase to actually recover the photos

I changed jobs and had to change email/AppleID. Before doing so, I did not copy the pics on the photo stream of my iPad to the album and now the only pics being synce with my iPad are new pics either saved or taken on phone. Old pics are still on phone. There has to be a way to get these pics to be able to stream them on to iPad, right?
You have a couple of options to get them in your photo stream:
Open the photos one at a time and take a screenshot. This will add a new low resolution copy of the photo to the camera roll, which will then upload to your photo stream;
Email the photos a few at a time to yourself, then save the attached photos to your camera roll. This will add a copy of the photo at full resolution to your camera roll and upload to photo stream;
Use an app like PhotoSync, which will allow you to wirelessly transfer copies of all your old photos to your computer all at once. Then delete these photos from your camera roll and use PhotoSync to transfer them back from your computer to your camera roll. These will be the original resolution and will upload to your photo stream. (You need an app like this because iTunes will not transfer photos back to your camera roll, where they must be in order to add to your photo stream.)
Or, you can add them to a shared stream and invite yourself as a subscriber (see http://help.apple.com/icloud/#/mmc0cd7e99). The shared stream will appear on your iPad and you can either leave things this way, or save them to the camera roll on your iPad and delete the shared stream. They won't be in your photo stream but they will at least be on your iPad. -
Just yesterday I downloaded the newest update for iTunes, a few days before doing this I purchased music, but after doing the update my songs will not play. It shows a message that says this file cannot be located, what can I do to find the location?
The path C:\users\owner\appdata\local\apple\apple software update\bonjour64.msi cannot be found. verify that you have access to this location and try again or try to find the installation package "bonjour64.msi" in a folder from which you can install the product bonjour.
Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on 25 June 2010. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeks are worth checking.)
After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp. Restart the PC, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time? -
How do I get my photos off 1st generation itouch? I have macbook pro, ipad, iphone. Itouch syncs but does not have option to share in any capacity ie send via email, etc. Also, the computer from which photos were originally taken from has crashed.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
Did you fail to back up your pics?
The photo sync is one way - comptuer to ipod.
You can e-mail them to yourself (instructions in the manual), but they will not be of the original quality. -
Help! I have recently updated LR5 and before doing so I was able to email files to clients! (Very Convenient) Now my problem is I have not been able to get pass this error message reading "failed to send" which gives no further detail about what to do to rectify the situation. Someone please guide me through this! Thanks in advance!
Did this ever get resolved, as I am having the same issue. Trying to learn LR5 AFTER a decade using Aperture. I was able to set up a validated account but when I try to send an e-mail or photo I get the simple " Failed to Send " message. Using latest version of Mac OS X.

I make annotations to my photos in iphoto using preview. But once I have made the annotation I do not get the photo back into the event in iphoto from which I took the photo. What am I doing wrong? I am not using aperture
For the annotations to display on the photo in iPhoto you must setup Preview as the external editor in iPhoto via iPhoto's Advanced preference pane.
After adding the annotations just do a Save. iPhoto will then recognize the change via a new modified version. You can revert to the original at any time if you want to get rid of the text.

I need help to decide which macbook pro is best for photo editing, editing movies and doing all the rest too like microsoft office products ...excel, word etc. I am new to the apple world and have liked the idea of the MAC Book Pro 13" but really dont know if this is good enough or if the computer will soon crash?
13-inch: 2.6GHz
with Retina display
Specifications
2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz
8GB 1600MHz memory
512GB PCIe-based flash storage1
Intel Iris Graphics
Built-in battery (9 hours)2That's a fine machine and, with 8GB of RAM and 512GB flash storage should serve you well for light video/photo editing as well as for 'normal' usage. And it should last you for years to come.
Good luck in making your decision!!

Downloaded OS 10.10. Was instructed to download iPhone 9.6. After 9.6 was downloaded iPhoto requested to update photo library which it will not do. How do I upgrade the photo library?
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I have a new MAcBook Air and my photos don't fit on the internal hard drive. I want to store my photos on an external hard drive which I will connect to my Air when using Iphoto. How do I set an external hard drive as the default drive in Iphoto?
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

When I updated to iOS 8.3 I lost all shared photo albums on my iPad Air. Other devises which I shared to still have access to photo albums but my iPad does not, therefore I can no longer add or delete to shared albums. I can create new shared albums.
Hello JimS19,
I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your iPad. If you are having issues accessing your Shared Albums from your iPad (but not from your other devices), you may want to double-check your iCloud Photo Sharing configuration as outlined in the following articles, just to make sure it hasn't changed:

Please see the bold. If you're out of icloud storage, then you won't be able to backup to icloud unless you purchase more storage, but yet you said you backup to icloud.
If you really did backup to icloud no data would be loss - sounds to me that it didn't backup since you had no more free icloud storage space.

I'm having trouble with the develop module in LR5.4. Any adjustments are taking effect, but only viewable in the filmstrip, not on the main photo. The navigator will go grey, as does the main area too. This applies to all edits done in develop module. I have posted several times on the forum with no responses to address this, and have seen others with the same issue. I have even gone as far as to do a complete re-install of LR5, with no success. I'm at a loss, and I depend on it for so much editing. Please help.
